@Sarabsrimt physics.stackexchange.com/questions/615370/… I wrote a solution. It it involves a little more of the vectors we read in class 12th maths (not taught in introduction to physics in 11th), but you were right it includes all concepts of JEE, though I also think it is not of JEE level but higher.

1 hour later…
5:28 AM
@napstablook great. Thanks a lot.
I thought maybe JEE advanced could crisp Q in such a way.
@JohnRennie Sir ,hi
I have written a solutions for a Q above.
@napstablook in my free time , I just search Q in the tag which can be useful for jee like free body diagram , Newtonian mechanics etc

@Sarabsrimt hi :-)
I'm busy in another room for a while I'm afraid.

@JohnRennie No problem sir. I am here.

1 hour later…
6:44 AM
@Sarabsrimt k thanks for the upvote.

Sid
Every year I come once to this room and marvel at how 4 years on, it is still being majorly used for JEE PreparationšŸ˜…

have you already passed JEE?
or are you foreign?

@Sid XD

Sid
I will complete my engineering in May this year
I think this room was started by one other person and I was here in Jan 2017 (or some time close to that).

@Sid I guess you did tell it is 4 yrs past. how was your jee experience? and what position did you secure? (if you dont mind me asking)
you mean JR didn't start this room?

Sid
6:52 AM
@napstablook No. JR became the resident teacher after we had passed(I think)
This room was originally called "JEE Preparation"

I don't remember who created the room ...
It was a long time ago :-)

@JohnRennie it has existed since the beginning of time. no one knows it's creator. how mysterious XD

Sid
@napstablook don't take JEE too seriously. Even if you do very well, it is only the start of your life. If you do not so well, it is not the end either. There is a lot to do in future.

@JohnRennie not so mysterious now :(

@JohnRennie wow, almost exactly 4 years!

6:56 AM
@Sid at the present though, I am very short sighted for JEE.
but you do speak true
@satan29 it's the eve of the 4th anniversary!

Sid
What I have learnt from the last 4 years is that nobody gives a crap about JEE after you join a Uni

@Sid in hindsight was the trouble for JEE worth it?

The JEE preparation is such a traumatic process that I think once it's past students tend to want to forget about it.

Sid
I think you need to ask someone who did some intense preparation. My preparation was not as intense as some people do. Regardless, the "trouble" that you speak of, it will be there even in Uni. Less stakes, sure but you need to make sure your brain isn't burned out.

Speaking as an outsider the JEE gives students an amazing grasp of basics in physics and maths. Probably better than UK students get.

7:01 AM
@JohnRennie that is true

Sid
@JohnRennie I have seen guys become fatigued with the intense prep that they had undergone for the past 2-3 years that in Uni, they are nowhere near their full potential

Yes, I can see that is a downside.

@Sid that's something I will keep in mind. My spring has a high stiffness. whenever I relax I do tend to spread out a lot.

It's really a failure of the educational system. If there were places for all good students it wouldn't be so insanely competitive.

@JohnRennie wouldn't a good college attract more people and that would make it even better? I thought this aggregation leads to similar competition everywhere no?

7:05 AM
In the UK there is certainly competition to get into e.g. Oxford and Cambridge
But going to Durham or Lancaster or other UK universities that aren't internationally famous will still give you a great education.
With India it feels as though there are IITs and ... well, that's it.
As though if you didn't get to an IIT you are a failure.

because colleges in india are not anywhere as good as IIT? hence the higher stakes?
that seems reasonable
anyways I shouldn't be chatting for too long, I do have to revise a lot in the next 2 days. thanks that was an interesting discussion..

7:24 AM
Biggest reason IIT is the best is because of its research facilities and it is a government institute(Less fees than private colleges) . So a lot of great professors can come here for research work and as well teach students.
Also , better internships and much more.
I would like to share this will all of you. My father studied from a small college in India. No facilities , not great teachers. But he worked hard a lot on his own . Studies many books , improved communication skills and much more. Last year , my father went to interview students at BITS Pilani to get a job in the company where he works. Also , he tells me that all his colleagues are IITians.
My dad works in VMware as a senior software engineer
So , I think IIT is the end.

Sid
@JohnRennie what Unis would you recommend if I apply for a Masters?

In the UK?

Sid
@JohnRennie Yes

That's going to cost a lot of money :-(

Sid
I have been looking at costs in European Unis and I think they are a little cheaper than American ones

7:38 AM
Yes, but only because US universities are ridiculously expensive!
What subject would you study for the masters?

Sid
@JohnRennie possibly Electrical and Computing
This COVID situation has kinda delayed my plans. I might work for a year or two and only then go for a Masters (if at all)

I don't know what universities have a good reputation for those subjects. You'd need to do some research online.
I don't know how a Masters qualification is seen in India. In the UK I probably wouldn't do a Masters unless I was going to continue to a PhD.
If you spend a year doing a Masters then join a company you will be competing with people who have spent a year working at the company and building up their reputation there.
You'd want to be sure that spending a year doing the Masters would be worth it.

Sid
@JohnRennie yes. That is why I am willing to delay it by a year or two. I am not sure if I want to go for a PhD yet

I would wait and see what the job opportunities are.
If you can get a good job that looks as if it gives you a good way to develop your career then I'd probably give that priority over doing a Masters.
If you start a job but after a year you feel it isn't going anywhere then maybe that's a time to think about whether doing a Masters would give you more opportunities.

Sid
7:57 AM
@JohnRennie currently, I have a job in hand(joining in July). I am thinking about joining for at least a year And see how it goes.
If it's worth doing, I might stick to it and see how it goes

That's what I would do.

2 hours later…
9:30 AM
@JohnRennie JEE Mains is very traumatic XD

just wait till you face the wrath of advanced XD

@JohnRennie Does it interfere when you write LaTeX?

@satan29 XD

@Wolgwang no

@JohnRennie Why?

9:35 AM
Oh, I see what you mean. Yes it can interfere. If I'm trying to write the Latex x^2 then the text replacer can sometimes automatically convert the ^2 to ² when I didn't want it to.
But generally this isn't a problem.

we can use \ right

Can you share your definitions? @JohnRennie

x \^ 2 ?

@Wolgwang have you installed the addon?

@JohnRennie Yes

9:38 AM
Click on the AutoTextExpander icon at the top of the window and click the Import/Export button
Then copy and paste in this text:
{
  "+-": "±",
  "1/2 ": "½",
  "1/3 ": "ā…“",
  "1/4 ": "¼",
  "2/3 ": "ā…”",
  "3/2 ": "³ā„ā‚‚",
  "3/4 ": "¾",
  "D_ ": "Ī”",
  "F_ ": "Ī¦",
  "G_ ": "Ī“",
  "L_ ": "Ī›",
  "O_ ": "Ī©",
  "S_ ": "Ī£",
  "Y_ ": "ĪØ",
  "^0 ": "°",
  "^1 ": "¹",
  "^2 ": "²",
  "^3 ": "³",
  "_0 ": "ā‚€",
  "_1 ": "ā‚",
  "_2 ": "ā‚‚",
  "_3 ": "ā‚ƒ",
  "a_ ": "Ī±",
  "b_ ": "Ī²",
  "d_ ": "Ī“",
  "e_ ": "Īµ",
  "f_ ": "Ļ†",
  "g_ ": "Ī³",
  "h_ ": "Ī·",
  "inf_": "āˆž",
  "int_": "āˆ«",
  "l_ ": "Ī»",
  "m_ ": "Ī¼",
  "n_ ": "Ī½",
  "p_ ": "Ļ€",
And click Save. That will import all my definitions.

Done^2

Does it work?

^2
No :-(

You need a space before and after the ^2

Ok ^2

9:41 AM
The extension waits for a space, then when you type the space it checks to see what you just typed and replaces it if there is a definition.
@Wolgwang Hmm, still not working?

2 ² Oh It works

BOOM! :-)

Thanks :-)

I have defined everything I think is useful, but you can add any extra definitions you want.

@JohnRennie Sir can you justify these phase diagrams?

9:47 AM
@user586228 the problem is that engineering texts tend to take a different approach to this that physics texts do.
I'd have to get a copy of your book and read it to work out what it was doing.

The name of the book is "Phase transformations in Metals and Alloys" by Porter and Easterling.

I don't have time to read it now I'm afraid.

No problem :-)

@JohnRennie truth lol

@JohnRennie 23a_ is not working

9:58 AM
@Buraian Thankyou for sending me the pdf for stresses.

@user586228 oh there is a better pdf

@Buraian Then send that..

I was actually just reading about mohr circle on engineering stackexchange and one person recommended me much better notes
one sec

@Wolgwang What have you defined 23a_ to do?

I mean a_

9:59 AM
check this @user586228
https://my.mech.utah.edu/~brannon/public/Mohrs_Circle.pdf

Ī±
It works here ...

a_

Remember you need a space before and after the text
<space>a_<space>

a_
So a_ should work but...

Hmm, note that you need to type all the characters within a certain time. I think it's about one second.

10:04 AM
ok a_ no
2^2 not works but 23² works
Ī± I got it.

OK :-)
The text converter can be a bit fiddly sometimes, but it does work and it's a lot quicker than trying to manually type the unicode characters every time.

@JohnRennie 2^2 not works but 23² work

If I type <space>2<space>^2<space> I get 2 ²

2 ²
Ok, It needs some practice. Thanks :-)

:-)

10:17 AM
Thanks @Buraian

10:33 AM
What does common tangents signify in a G vs X curve?

10:57 AM
How to plot a vs X curves for the given G vs X??
A detailed desription is most welcome..
My question is how to plot the a vs x curves?

11:28 AM
A body m1 of mass 9 kg and another body m2 of mass 6 kg are connected by a light inextensible string. Consider a smooth inclined plane of inclination 30° over which one of them can be placed while the other hangs vertically and freely. If t1 and t2 are the time taken in dragging m1 and m2 up the whole length of the plane, find t2/t
Guys , why is my diagram wrong for this Q.
@JohnRennie Hi sir.

@Sarabsrimt I would guess it means this:

11:44 AM
But why not the way I thought
@JohnRennie
Which sentence made you think that diag
It didnā€™t talk about the pulley to be attached to wedge

11:56 AM
The other block can hang freely anywhere .

Hello sir
I have a Q
[![enter image description here][1]][1]

[1]: https://i.stack.imgur.com/zoo2b.jpg

So , I was trying to solve it. Then , I notice that acc of 2kg mass has 2effects. One acc from the force to left and one from the Q up. Then , the 2kg mass would go diagonally and not straight .

I am not getting how to solve this Q further .

I'm eating lunch I'm afraid. I can have a look later.

Sure sir. Enjoy your lunch.
