adding both we get: 5mv^2
why is it short by mv^2 from the correct answer?

This is my problem with the question. Look at the distances a and b I have marked on the diagram. The length of the string is L = 2a + 3b plus this bits wrapped round the pulleys, but these are constant so I'm going to ignore them.

Now suppose the left pulley moves down some distance x. Then the distance a increases to a+x and the distance b decreases to b-x
So the length of the string changes to L = 2(a+x) + 3(b-x) = 2a + 3b - x
i.e. if the left pulley moves down then the length of the string decreases, and physically this means the string would go slack.
@JohnRennie wouldn't the right pulley move too? so we should take it's effects in measure
All I'm doing here is asking what happens if the left pulley were to move down ...

The point is that the left pulley is massless so it can move in response to the slightest force, and we've established that if it moves up the string goes slack.

As soon as you give the pulleys a mass the problem becomes much harder because then the pulleys will have a non-zero moment of inertia so they have a rotational kinetic energy and rotational acceleration.
The point is that I don't see how the question can be asnwered as it is.
