i'm about 35% here

I'm kinda here but not for long because I need to get some sleep

quick round?
though we can't let gareth defend because we'll be here all day/night/week

12:54 AM
I've defended some pretty quick Contact games. But I hope not to be here long enough for even a quick one :-).

@north defending M

New game ID is 40 (you can use this to !resume an unfinished game if something goes wrong).

last time i played lens was being a bad bot

same
+9 ...

huh

12:56 AM
wait is this just me and gareth?

is there like a new format?
welp yeah

oh well

yah I think we probably don't have enough to play hehe
let's see, I think I meant to do
+9: ...
yeah that. but the bot still doesn't care

the bot's pretty fragile at the best of times

12:58 AM
i still dont know what"..." means lol

oh. it means a lot of things.

My guess is it doesn't recognize "+9" as a number.
contact +9 perhaps

It usually means that there's nothing beyond the index needed to clue the word. (in the setter's opinion.)
hey john. :)

+9 is not "m"
idk

12:59 AM
1. A very small seizure?

No, it is not "m".

70: 6e29

contact 70

are you sure that's the right number?
the 29 I mean, not the 70 or the 6
contact 70
(one way or another)

I mean ... it's answerable either way hehe

1:01 AM
70 it's not mu (?)

70 x

(my parenthetical remark means the same as Rubio's following comment)

70 is not math

The word being defended starts with M. Your guess starts with I. Try again.

oh Lens, Lens, Lens

1:01 AM
dafuq

"is" starts with I, you see

bah.

who programmed this abomination? GPR?

71 Tick tock, not a clock

1:02 AM
XD

contact 71

71 minutes

There doesn't appear to be an active clue with the number 21, so you can't make a guess.

71 x

pass 70

1:03 AM
Clue #70 (6e29) was contacted by: Rubio, Gareth McCaughan. Make your guesses (one each)!
(Multiple guesses will be ignored until the first is confirmed.)

70. MEGAMOLE (if the 29 is really intended)

and MOLE if not

70 ✔️

You guessed correctly. North must give up a letter!

which one
?

1:04 AM
MOLE was intended

buahaa

then it should have been 23

yup, sorry

6.022 x 10^23

uhhh what mole? Like the naked mole mole?

1:04 AM
There is no clue #6.022. What exactly are you saying no to?

no, chemistry
Avogadro's number

ohhh

omg lens stop

!shutup

I'm sorry, I've been told not to listen to you. Try asking a mod to add you to the whitelist.

1:05 AM
fuq u

buahahaa

We'd rather play with the bot on, thank you

ha, Lens basically replied to "!shutup" with "shutup!"

@north defending MI

1 lives

1:05 AM
+9 lives

71 dies - metronome

71 presumably dies; uncontact if not

Clue text must be bold (surround it with ** or __). Please try again.

ahhh 71 makes more sense now

is "seizure" loose?

1:06 AM
The clue is pretty loose. I'm not sure whether I'd locate the looseness in the word "seizure" exactly.

hm

hmm

welp. if I clash, sorry. ;)

72 the only gaseous substance in Dwarf Fortress

1': A very small greeting?

1:07 AM
72 mithril?

contact 1'

72 x

wait that makes no sense

Mithril isn't gaseous

Man I suck at defending :P

1:07 AM
It is if you make it hot enough.

What's the boiling point of mithril? We need mith

What's the boiling temperature of mithril?

ahhaahah

What's the boiling point of Mithrandir

2. Force carriers

1:08 AM
okay 1' minute?

1
ack
1' is not MINUTE

There was no guess made for #1'. What exactly are you confirming?

ew. contact 2?

ooh 2... hmm
I feel like it's something to do with bio that my brain isn;t working

1:10 AM
73 not centaur

2 mosquitoes?

The word being defended starts with MI. Your guess starts with MO. Try again.

I know 2, but I can't remember it

ha, I'm intelligent guys!

contact 73

1:10 AM
2 is not MOSQUITOES, and does in fact begin MI

There was no guess made for #2. What exactly are you confirming?

contact 73 I guess

wow. lens, you're drunk. go home.

73 minotaur (hope i didn't butcher it)

73 ✔️

1:11 AM
I was thinking mucus for 2 for it's not

74 Famous powerhouse

contact 74

pass 2, I'm really curious

...but clue #2 hasn't been contacted!? Ok, I guess you know what you're doing... (You can !unpass if you made a mistake.)

2 MIDICHLORIANS

1:11 AM
yup

ah!

ewwww

of course I could have used the same clue if it had been ME instead of MI, because mesons.

but then I wouldn't have contacted it. ;)

@GarethMcCaughan That was dirty

1:12 AM
@GarethMcCaughan, Rubio guessed MIDICHLORIANS for clue #2. Please confirm or deny the guess.

I suspect there's some military thing that would have allowed at least one other vowel
2. correct

You guessed correctly. North must give up a letter!

(is that how I do it?)
(apparently it is)

mortar :P

@North defending MIN

1:13 AM
I was thinking of something that carried soldiers or similar

72 dies, miasma

+9 dies. (Gareth?)

1 lives
+9 was presumably MIX

74 dies

74 was presumably MITOCHONDRION

1:13 AM
it was.
1' dies

74 ✔️

There was no guess made for #74. What exactly are you confirming?

and inspired by 2

yup

mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell reeee

1:14 AM
I know what 1' was but will not say right now

fair enough
I'm not revealing either ;)

75 kinda spicy

75 is definitely MILD '

The word being defended starts with MIN. Your guess starts with ISD. Try again.
@Rubio, it's been more than 1.5 minutes since North provided a new letter, and you still haven't indicated whether clue #1' is alive or dead.
@JohnDvorak, it's been more than 1.5 minutes since North provided a new letter, and you still haven't indicated whether clue #74 is alive or dead.

ahahaha

1:15 AM
huhwhat

slap that bot. I clearly said 1' was dead.

i love how it's like 1.5 minutes
1 miniscule?

1 is not MINISCULE nor even the correctly spelled MINUSCULE
why did 1 just disappear?

I've seen both spellings. I "love" English.

1 is mini?

1:16 AM
There is no clue #1. What exactly are you confirming?

lens needs to see the optometrist.

1 is not MINI

There is no clue #1. What exactly are you confirming?

and I am sure you have seen both spellings but only one of them is correct.

76 Vase dynasty

1:17 AM
1. A very small seizure?
contact 76

@GarethMcCaughan who are you speaking to?

1 definition found

From WordNet (r) 3.0 (2006) [wn]:

  miniscule
adj 1: very small; "a minuscule kitchen"; "a minuscule amount of
             rain fell" [syn: {minuscule}, {miniscule}]
^ i mean, really? really?

77 Artificial cave

who's contacted 1?

I don't think anyone has, actually.
3. Book by Seymour Papert

1:19 AM
pass 76

Clue #76 (Vase dynasty) was contacted by: Gareth McCaughan. Make your guess!

76 is MING

76 ✔️

(he said, mercilessly)

You guessed correctly. North must give up a letter!

1:19 AM
Ahahaha that's really good.
@north defending MINO

77 dies, mine
75 dies, minty

i assume 1 dies

1 dies. It was MINIMAL. I can now reveal that 1' was surely MICROWAVE.

ahhh

3 dies. It was MINDSTORMS.

1:20 AM
I should have had that

@GarethMcCaughan Uhh minimal? Is there like a wordplay there?

14 ,perhaps

Epileptic seizures may be grand mal or petit mal. I was inventing a smaller-still category.

oh i see

1:21 AM
contact 14

@Rubio, it's been more than 1.5 minutes since North provided a new letter, and you still haven't indicated whether clue #1' is alive or dead.

5: Asia, kind of

@JohnDvorak, it's been more than 1.5 minutes since North provided a new letter, and you still haven't indicated whether clue #74 is alive or dead.

contact 5

ffs
1' is dead

1:21 AM
There was no guess made for #1'. What exactly are you confirming?

1' died

You can't make guesses right now; that's the defender's job. Wait till a clue has been passed.

6. Cretan, perhaps

1' dies

6 minotaur (again?)

1:22 AM
nope

contact 6, perhaps

ahh pass 5, but I know the answer :P

5 is MINOR

bah

You can't make guesses right now; that's the defender's job. Wait till a clue has been passed.

1:22 AM
5 ✔️

There was no guess made for #5. What exactly are you confirming?

MINOR was my word

@GarethMcCaughan, North guessed MINOTAUR (AGAIN for clue #6. Please confirm or deny the guess.

bloody hell Lens

It's year 3019. Last human with two eyes has died. I still get pinged about clue 74.

1:23 AM
Game over! John Dvorak wins with the clue Vase dynasty, guessed by Gareth McCaughan. The solution (and presumably North's word) was MINOR.

how is it possible to be so wrong?

Remaining clues (for reference):
6 : Cretan, perhaps (by Gareth McCaughan) (waiting for confirmation of guess MINOTAUR (AGAIN by North) (contacted by Rubio)
5 : Asia, kind of (by Rubio) (contacted by Gareth McCaughan)
14 : ,perhaps (by John Dvorak) (contacted by Gareth McCaughan)
74 : Famous powerhouse (by John Dvorak) (contacted by Gareth McCaughan) (status uncertain)
1' : A very small greeting? (by Rubio) (contacted by Gareth McCaughan) (status uncertain)

omg

14 was clearly also MINOR

The game is over. No more guesses are being accepted.

1:23 AM
this is so funny

6 was MINOAN

yah i had that

why was 14 minor?

14 was minor indeed

because a 14yo is a minor

1:24 AM
hah nice

are you calling me fourteen?!?

that means the round actually goes to you

did Lens get anything right in that game?

but I'm willing to let Rubio defend

I'll have you know I'm 14 years old in tree age

1:24 AM
rubio is not really here now

(btw I'm not actually 14)

yeah, I'm also outta here

I have to figure out how to put random numbers into a 200-sum magic square.

I have to go too. John, you can play a solo contact game

Luckily, I guess.

1:25 AM
there's a generalized procedure for this for sequential numbers, but not for random, right?

well, that resolves that question...

Oh, I see, you get to choose which ones go where
in general there's no guarantee it's possible at all

well. there's 25 values, preassigned

I don't know of any cunning algorithm
which doesn't mean there isn't one

whee. brute force it is.

1:26 AM
oh, 10x10. I thought 3x3, just with larger numbers

if you put a word longer than 15 letters, is it considered scrabble legal?
No right?

10x10 would be 100 numbers, not 25

There is no clue #10. What exactly are you saying no to?

I am saying no to you, Lens

You're just sampling a 198-dimensional polytope living in 200-dimensional space

1:27 AM
I think Contact words are allowed to be >15 letters.

But how would it be scrabble legal?
I mean, the board doesn't fit it

If the official Scrabble wordchecker is able to answer the question "would this word be legal on a larger Scrabble board", that is

yah contact words are allowed to be any length, they just have to be scrabble legal in the sense that they fit the criteria for a valid word
tile limitations and length constraints don't apply

i see
!shutup

I'm sorry, I've been told not to listen to you. Try asking a mod to add you to the whitelist.

1:28 AM
!help

Hello! I'm Lens, a bot to help with the game of Contact.
I will try to keep track of the game state and keep the game moving. If you're on my whitelist, you can use the following commands to communicate with me (some are mod-only):

You could generate all but the last row and column, compute those, and restart if any is out of bounds.

hmm, looks like Hasbro's word-checker doesn't allow long words

!clues - list all active clues
!contacts [<clueNum>] - list contacts for a specific clue or all clues
!unpass - undo a "pass" if you made a mistake
!kill - remove a clue from the list of active clues. This will kill anyone's clue, not just your own.
!gameover - ends a game, resetting my data
!uncontact <clueNum> - remove all contacts for clue <clueNum>
!shutup [<minutes>] - silence me completely for the specified amount of time (defaults to 10 min)

okay I have to go bai

1:28 AM
@JohnDvorak yeah - there are more optimal algorithms for "random" filling than that, but I am lazy

The issue with my suggestion is going to be an unacceptably high rejection ratio
Also, there's that one trivial constraint on the input that you need to check to know if there even is a solution - and probably a couple non-trivial ones that also make it unsolvable.
