8 is a pretty decent sized field considering it is only for one slot...
07:17
@James Some very big contenders with that.
08:13
Yeah. 8 to 1 is already a lot. Considering how strong some existing candidates are too.
@James it is more a reflection of participation and involvement, than comparing with open positions. But it is as it is, there is nothing to sorry about.

@MichaelKjörling I didn’t. I just put the direct link in a comment! (I don’t think we need direct links to each answer from each nomination)
Hmm, anybody know which “participation badges” are the 6 that matter? I wonder which one I’m missing. I suspect it’s involvement in the private beta, wbich is of course impossible to get now.
10:09
I'd say electorate is one you're missing.

Q: Moderator election candidate score badge breakdown

RadiodefIn the moderator election nominee section, the candidate score contains the following badge categories: These categories do not exactly follow the ones listed on the badges page, for example there is no editing category. Also, participation has 2 gold badges and 7 silver badges which does not ...

10:46
@JDługosz I thought about doing only that, but felt that I had so many comments on my nomination that the link would risk getting buried in the noise.
11:16
«Vote on 600 questions and 25% or more of total votes are on questions» yea, most of my votes are on Answers.
11:49
@JDługosz More or less than 75%?
12:49
Much more, I would think. I’ve got thousands of votes, well over the needed 600, but not a high enough proportion being on Qs for this badge's metric.
@JDługosz You can see the breakdown on your profile, tab "activity", bottom right.
@JDługosz That's why you should have activated the gamer mode in you early on and looked up on which available badges there are before going on an voting spree - the earlier you plan your voting the easier it is to get the badge ;)

5 more hours to go. Last call!
I was considering to put my 5 cents in, but once @MichaelKjörling announced his candidature, I was decided :)
So many good candidates. This is gonna be interesting. I have my top 3 though I'm not even sure of the ordering.
I am almost entirely decided, but I would, of course, be willing to change my mind for a minor.... "donation"... My bitcoin wallet is.... ;)
@SerbanTanasa Final boarding call? Gate 42.
:)
9 3/4 , actually
14:36
@PavelJanicek Considering that I was the first to nominate, I'm not sure if that's a good sign or a bad one, but I'll take it as a hopeful one!
@SerbanTanasa BYOB? (Bring your own broom?)
@MichaelKjörling It is hopeful one. Because I am around since private beta and therefore know how great moderator skills you actually have
You have my full endorsement
@PavelJanicek Thank you, I appreciate it.
I have a pretty good idea which candidates I'm going to vote for myself, but not the exact order.
@Mrkvička Do candidate please. It would be cool to have someone from Czech Republic as a mod. If you do candidate, you are my second pick ;]
14:52
@PavelJanicek I did actually consider it for a second or two, but I felt I need a bit more experience with the site before I give it a go - next year perhaps.
Remember that elections are not held every year. The next election will be held when either one of current mods steps down, or there will be need for next one ...
well, then whenever there is room for a new one, then I will have enough experience to rule with an iron fist... err, I mean... moderate with a thoughtful patience
@PavelJanicek just do it, take badge, and as I said at the moment newbie have a chance be a conductor of changes, is it happens you have a silver spoon. Make convincing questionnaire.
@Mrkvička hm, I meant you
@PavelJanicek you too, more better, long election route
lol, thank you both for your confidence, but I don't think I would make an awesome moderator. It's nicer to whine about mods than getting whined about ;)
Although, I do believe that you'd make a good candidate @PavelJanicek; If you want a Czech mod, then you'd make a better contribution than I (I'm only czech by marriage and not birth)
@Mrkvička it is not about confidence, it is about confidence about electors, if there will be 50+ electors and they will pick you, then for some mysterious reasons you will be indeed chosen one, and there is no doubt, no doubt in community decision.
community trust exercise
15:10
@MolbOrg I will give it a though more, but I am fairly certain that the other good candidates are far more suited than me, it's not my time to rise the ranks to supreme chancellor.... moderator.... this fast
15:20
@Mrkvička sure you decide it for your self, just do not stop you from doing it just because anyone else has more rep, badges. Experience yes it plays a role, but at the election, it is not that important (my opinion), less than half year and you will know the drill for sure(any will), so it is not that big deal. My agenda is I will see the reaction of voters for fresh candidatures(and their I could be him reaction), and as encourage them more actively participate next time.
s/and as encourage them more actively participate next time./and as result encourage them more actively participate next time./ and pay more attention for such events and mod actions.
@HDE226868 I love you too man.
15:55
Is anyone else getting impatient for the nomination phase to end?
@James Yup. Though I guess you must be more impatient than I am.
@PatJ I think the word twitchy applies at this point
@James Ooooh! I just learned a new fancy English word!
@PatJ Twitchy or something else?
Well, twitchy.
15:59
If anyone wants to calm down that twitchy-finger, please feel free to review my most recent answer. I'd love it if someone can cross-check the math. worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/a/71059/29
Its a good word
I mean, I knew the word "point"
@MichaelKjörling Your math has numbers and symbols and letters in it. I can confirm that it is in fact math...probably.
@James Haha. Wait until you get to the value of GM.
@MichaelKjörling It has units, so I'd say your maths is mostly physics.
16:02
@PatJ Why yes, it really is! :)
I love that kind of questions. Gave me something to think about (off and on) for a few hours.
I'd go as far as saying it is in fact astronomy.
@PatJ Orbital mechanics, actually.
Plus a little bit of trigonometry. Add to taste and stir.
@MichaelKjörling Aaaaaand we've reached the limits of my skills.
16:22
@MichaelKjörling It looks correct to me, although I only eyeballed it, I never checked if your data is correctly chosen
@Mrkvička I picked Jupiter and the Sun precisely because there was readily available orbital data. That Ganymede happened to be a nice fit for the OP's desired orbital parameters around the gas giant was a bonus.

3 hours later…
19:16
45 minutes...
19:40
@James So what's above twitchy then?
@PatJ Uhhh...hrmm...not sure
@MichaelKjörling if you picked your numbers from Jupiter data, then it is probably correct - as I said, eyeballing your equations comes out right (I see no misuse of the equations and the powers of ten works out) - I'd say it's correct ±3 mm
Sooooo.... how many of the nominees have an army of bot-net voters at their disposal now when it draws close?
@Mrkvička That seems like a lot of work
you mean you just pay your relatives to vote for you instead? ;)
@Mrkvička Dude just pay SE. You'll save time, energy, and you avoid talking to your relatives that way.
19:45
true, true
19:58
1 Minute :D
Dang, I missed it all!
And I got a nice new badge!
@PatJ Is it shiny? Does it tickle?
so, it told me to vote...
who would one vote for?
the one who gives you the most gold
20:03
@MichaelKjörling It is sooo shiny, the shine of community-based consensus.
@Ghanima The one you prefer?
@Mrkvička they may start making their offers
Hah, it seems like @MichaelKjörling was first to write a nomination and the first to vote - at least you are the first one in my list of people awarded with the constituent badge for this vote session
@Mrkvička Given that there were four badges awarded at the same UTC second, and then a whole bundle of them five minutes later, I'd say that's more of an artefact of how SE's systems work than of actual voting order. Look at the user IDs (visible in the profile URLs).
tsk tsk, you were a quick ba****d, just admit it ;)
@Mrkvička Yes yes, and the other three happened to vote less than a second later. But I'm not telling you who they voted for!
20:19
regardless if it chunks out the badges and list it in ID order, you were still among the first for both events ;p
@Mrkvička Of course. A moderator has to stay on top of their site. ;-)
Seriously though, I'm glad to see that lots of people are voting.
y, I agree - it will be interesting to see the outcome. may the one with the most votes win (unlike some elections around the globe....)
and bedtime for me - night all
Happy timezone.
20:22
btw: is someone stepping down or are we getting another slot?
you may notice I did not follow the whole election prep process
^ similar question, I didnt pay attention at all and wasn't that much active this year
@Ghanima None of the current moderators are stepping down.
Feb 6 at 21:23, by HDE 226868
Just to be clear: All four of the current mods are staying on the team. Moderators do not have to reelected on graduated sites, but elections are generally held if someone's planning on stepping down or if the workload significantly increases. We're looking for a fifth mod because of the latter case. More flags and more activity - all of which is awesome - mean that another set of hands would be quite welcome.
thanks
that makes sense :)
I have hands!
20:31
good for you!
@James Damn, I have hands too! Maybe I should have nominated myself.
21:13
And so it begins. . .
There is a hole in your mind
@Ghanima I was commenting on the last line of the linked message from HDE.
@James We'll take feet, too, if you're handless. Just wash them before handling flags; feet can be unsanitary.
21:30
@James how would anybody know
Has to be said it would be kinda nice to see a previous mod return to moderation. 'Sides, @MichaelKjörling was an excellent mod, right through beta - does a man need any better qualification?
@HDE226868 My fee are pretty dexterous as well...
@ArtOfCode Don't you have a podcast to render :D
@James I'd have to finish editing it first :P
but yes, that I probably should do
at some point
And for once, y'all can rest easy, because my audio is the difficult one
@ArtOfCode Wooo!
Was I loud enough this time?
not quite, but good enough
i.e. "close enough that I can amplify it without butchering the track"
21:39
@ArtOfCode Hrm...I think I have the volume all the way up but I will have to check
