Rather fascinating video about puzzle design.

@El'endiaStarman I really really liked that video.
It also kinda makes me want to play SSR lol
But it also definitely inspires me a lot. I've always wanted to make puzzle games, and that mindset seems like a really good mental framework to design the puzzles in

Yeah, agreed. I've often wondered how people came up with puzzles, especially ones that require creative solutions, and that video definitely gave some good insight into that.
It'll probably still be a mystery to me though until/unless I make my own.

Well, if I make progress, I'll ask you for level design/play testing, how does that sound? :)

@El'endiaStarman Remember the Puzzles vs Problems video?
the open ended one are "Problems" :)
I believe it's been posted here before
Oh, actually! I've tried making a puzzle once inside another game, but that framework wasn't really conducive to advanced logic
It's a sliding-tile maze (the maze is printed on the tiles)
I know, the images are super small
but those are the 9 pieces. The goal is to get from the center of one piece to the center of another piece
obviously some pieces are easier than others

@DJMcMayhem Sounds great! :D (I did enjoy playtesting a lot of Tametsi puzzles for Eric.)
@NathanMerrill Oh yeah, I remember this video! I think you're right that it was posted in here before.

@DJMcMayhem I have time tomorrow, just ping me when you're done:)

@flawr You overestimate me

Would sunday be better for you?

I've had this idea for a puzzle game for a while, but I've never worked on it yet. And there aren't any game engines I'm very comfortable in. So I doubt I could prototype a game in 3 days...

I bet you could :D
To be serious, let us know if you want to share or discuss more details!

I'd be really happy too, but I think for my own sake I'd rather have non-trivial progress in it before sharing too much.
I've wanted to do game-dev for a long time, but I've spent way too much time excitedly talking about ideas and too little time working on them.
@flawr The vote of confidence is nice though :)
You and El'endia are at the top of my list for testers

@DJMcMayhem It is a real thing that talking about your projects can activate the same or similar pathways in your brain as actually doing it, so you feel satisfied with your "progress" and have a hard time actually going further.
That's a big part of why I've mostly stopped talking about my personal projects; it'll get done when it gets done and then I'll talk about it. :)

@El'endiaStarman That doesn't surprise me at all. I have a group of friends that are all really interested in game dev, and theoretically have most of the necessary skills to make something together (3 programmers and an artist). I've lost track of how many times we've all gotten really excited about some idea, spent a bunch of time talking about it and planning meetings etc. and yet literally never wrote anything

Have y'all thought about getting together during one of those Ludum Dares? (I figure you must have.)

No, that's not a bad idea!
But I doubt it would work very well. Not to mention that most of them are crazy busy with school
