Simply Beautiful Art has removed an event from this room's schedule.
@user21820 Come join
Rules similar to last time. This time, we will have:
1) No program longer than 100 bytes.
2) Your number must be finite and your code must terminate.
3) Your code will be run as is, no additional inputs may be given.
4) Physical restrictions do not apply, such as memory or running time.
5) No outsourcing e.g. no calling outside libraries.
6) Your code must be deterministic. If your code is run repeatedly on multiple computers, it should output the same result each time.
Anyone can join! Matlab and Mathematical are acceptable languages, and its easy to learn the basics of most languages in a few days!
So good luck and have fun!
@SimplyBeautifulArt Coding/programming is fun/entertaining....Believe me I know that, and it's probably good for you simply to be having fun for a few weeks...But you ultimately belong in math (and perhaps coding on the side). But then again, you know yourself and your intellectual passions better than I!
00:41
@amWhy Well, I thought it'd be fun, and since the last one, @user21820 complained that he couldn't easily prove his own code terminated... so I thought setting tighter restraints would be fun for him.
And anyway....it's almost surely too soon for you have to make any long term commitments.
@SimplyBeautifulArt Ahh, yes, and it is/shall be fun. And yes, I think this challenge will be a delight to watch.

@SimplyBeautifulArt Clever; always good to shake things up a bit!

Sometimes you'll get fed up of doing maths. It's good to take a break and let the motivation rekindle.
I like to think of motivation as the best quality sleep we can get. Sure, we can fuel ourselves with other "junk" energy but nothing gives you that surge of energy like a good night's rest.

Q: Ernie and the Optical Gyroscopes

PenguinoI almost always take up Ernie’s offers to crew on his boat, when he suggests an overnight expedition. But when he phoned last Thursday I had to remind him that it was TV night, and Acme Satellite Studios were airing the final episode of our favorite Nordic Noir series. But when he assured me that...

Unsolved, if anyone fancies a chance

Q: How do you not forget old math?

Jose CapcoI am trying to not forget my old math. I finished my PhD in real algebraic geometry a few years ago and then switched to the industry for financial reasons. Now I get the feeling that I want to do a postdoc and I face the dilemma that I actually have forgotten a lot of my algebraic geometry class...

I wondor if you guys feel like you've forgetten what you've learned
14:11
I think Terry Tao has a good point to make. I'll be starting my own little blog just for that reason during the summer.

@shredalert what is the value of starting a math blog ?
@Zophikel for fun for me
14:25
@Simply you starting a math blog ?
@Zophikel maybe...
@Simply what topics are you going to be addressing
@Zophikel no idea
14:41
@Zophikel Keep you fresh on topics or a reference to go back to. I'll probably write about logic and anything I'm learning really.
I'm really finding these sections on predicate logic super helpful
quantifiers confused me a lot but these exercises are great in clearing up that confusion
14:58
@shredalert thanks i'll have to find a rerfence book on Calc-based stuff so I won't have to look it up all the time
15:10
I have a nice little book on infinitesimal calculus that needs reading
by the same author of the logic and set theory books I'm reading
Jim Henle
He's a good writer

@SimplyBeautifulArt Closure alert (second or third attempt to post within the past hour) math.stackexchange.com/questions/2283687/…
16:43
@amWhy *tsk tsk*, it is a repeated attempt to post the same question twice?
Indeed; the user deleted the original post after receiving 2 down-votes, and reposted it at the location I linked to.
17:11
O.O I got kicked from the 19th byte for posting the weird thing with the weird dancing people xD
Guess I deserve it :P
@amWhy could not find it
Oh @amWhy I saw an interesting article on using Computer Algebra to solve Putnam Problems :)
Sorry @Riker and @Thorgott (〒︿〒)
I don't mind
@Simply what is 19th byte
?
17:37
@Zophikel another 'realm' I visit for programmers
What brings @Thorgott here? If I may ask.
17:55
decided to drop by again after not being around for some time
@Thorgott Do you code/program?
nope, never got into that
Ah
@Thorgott If you would like, you can try joining in: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/51337/conversation/…
18:15
@Zophikel The question I linked to was deleted by the asker (after she received four downvotes.) Thanks for asking!
Ah, @Mith - ic is back
Mythic... or Mythrandir.... !!
18:28
Sorry, kinda busy
@Mithrandir Then get outta here! :P

Just kidding, you are always welcome.
@Mithrandir I was simply saying hello. I'm sorry if the use of "Myth" in your name is tiring to you. Be well.
And next time you're busy, don't pop into a chatroom, and expect everyone to ignore you, Ta ta.
Darn, and I've come up with three awesome puzzles... Oh, well, I had fun!
@amWhy no, it's fine :)
@SimplyBeautifulArt *scurries*
@amWhy sounds good!
Hi all
19:30
Hi @shredalert
@Riker You can join in on my contest if you want. Just don't copy any of people's stuff >.>
I'm beginning to feel like the "Wicked Witch of The West (or, uh, umm.... The wicked Warlock....being gender neutral!): see this post in need of closure, if one is so inclined to do so, coughs err, @SimplyBeautifulArt, err, or coughs @shredalert
Is Warlock gender neutral?
"Wink wink"
I always thought it was masculine
Note I used Witch, and then Warlock, so as not to assign gender....
19:38
@amWhy 3. 2. 1. Done!
@SimplyBeautifulArt $\ddot\smile$
@shredalert Because s/he/we can all appear (or worse, be) wicked!
How do people post questions like that without cringing at themselves. xD
Even if I ask something that has an "obvious" answer, I'll still spell out what I tried first.
@shredalert Many just want the answer.
Where is the fun in that lol
Many don't enjoy math :-/
19:45
They should at least put a little disclaimer then that "This is a homework assignment I'd like some help with".
@shredalert If it were clear to me this was a new, or very newish user, I cut a lot of slack. But the user who asked the question I linked to, has been here for nearly 18 months!
That is a while! @amWhy
Woo, comparative politics/government for the summer starts for me today
Politics is great. I loved my A-level politics class.
@Simply Woww.... really? At your school?
19:47
@amWhy I take some college classes :P
It was hilarious watching some students really go at each other thinking they had the "right" way of doing things nailed down.
@SimplyBeautifulArt Great! I've been encouraging you to do so, haven't I? :b
Bleh
::chokes on his drink::
Hm... what was I going to say...
@Simply lol
Have you all heard about the 14 year-old, just graduated from college, (and will soon also graduate from high-school!!
19:49
I think everyone is going to enjoy the above video :)
@amWhy who is he
nope @amWhy
I can't remember his name...lives in Texas....(majored in physics and math), and his 11 year old brother is starting college this fall.
dang @amWhy makes me feel dumb :(
@Zophikel Grammar matters
"dang @amWhy. Makes me feel dumb"
19:52
@SimplyBeautifulArt thanks for correcting me
@SimplyBeautifulArt The start is funny. lol
@Simply you know any good books that will help with my bad grammer
Well, I mean, if @amWhy makes you feel dumb... then its all good
@shredalert xD It gets better
@Zophikel Ask @Mithrandir I think
You should have seen the flak I got from other students for being a relativist xD
19:53
All right @Simply oh I've got this cool side-shooter you will love
@Zophikel Nahhhh... Apparent "prodigies" all too often burn and die; great wine is made so through aging.... Reminds me of a song...."there is a time..."
@amWhy wow I didn't consider that
Just read books in general, it'll improve your English
It's the people that never stop that reach the furthest. @Zophikel. You can sprint for a short time but a marathon runner will go a lot further.
I second @Mithrandir. But be careful of the time-period and location they are set it.
@shredalert interesting I've been learning this beautiful subject on my own for a long time
@Simply check out this game brainout.org
You might end up talking like people from the middle-ages otherwise xD
@Simply :)
download and play mate :)
@Zophikel interesting
Hello @DRF
@SimplyBeautifulArt I can't keep watching. I'd punch my screen. xD
20:48
night all
sleepy time
20:58
g'morning folks
21:12
@shredalert why do people pay so much attention to prodigies
?
@EricStucky g'morning
@Zophikel Society takes interest in the abnormal
Morning @EricStucky
eyy and chat comes alive
well
reanimates, I suppose
@Simply I figured that but I did read an article that nowadays being a prodigy doesn't cut it
21:17
@Zophikel Indeed...
@Simply then what does it take to succeed
perseverance.
I mean, I don't think being a prodigy would ever have 'cut it', except that it elevates a person to a status where they can start acquiring useful resources and make something of themselves. But if you don't do the second step, then you're just going to fizzle.
1 hour ago, by shredalert
It's the people that never stop that reach the furthest. @Zophikel. You can sprint for a short time but a marathon runner will go a lot further.
@Simply this makes me question the notion of a genisus
21:26
mhm?
Haven't we seen this question multiple times recently?
@SimplyBeautifulArt Yes we have! It seems your close vote nailed the coffin, for now, anyway :-)
:P And stay closed!
22:48
def f(n,a=n,b=n,c=n,d=n**n)c>0?d.times{n=f n,a,b,c-1}&&n:b>0?f(d,a,b-1):a<0?d:f(d,a-1)end;f(f(f 99))
23:18
@SimplyBeautifulArt Hey! How is it going? What it is you ask me to participate to?
If you want, you can try coding a large number
@InfiniteMonkey You know how to program/code?
@SimplyBeautifulArt Nope, not yet. I'll have to learn to code my ideas for a day or two but I'm interested thanks for the invite!
@InfiniteMonkey Its going well. I'm learning how to code golf in Ruby. Code golfing is basically where you make your code super short.
@InfiniteMonkey No problem. The contest is supposed to end at the start of June.... :D
(I can't count my months apparently lol)
@InfiniteMonkey I can show you the basics of Ruby if you want. Learning the basics of how to code in Ruby are pretty easy.
I'm pretty busy with landscaping right now but I'll be done with most of my project soon.
@SimplyBeautifulArt That's more feasible than April lol!
@SimplyBeautifulArt Yeah I would like to learn it
:D
Landscaping? What's that?
23:28
Well mostly its "grooming" the yard, pulling weeds and planting seedlings in the veggies garden, those kind of things
I'm building a small pond for my turtle
@InfiniteMonkey A super simple example.
@SimplyBeautifulArt Why Ruby, any particular reason?
@InfiniteMonkey Personally language I currently use best is the only reason.
23:32
"Matlab and Mathematical are acceptable languages" Do you mean Mathematica?
I know some Mathematica
Oh whoops, probably stupid auto-correct
@InfiniteMonkey :D Use it if you want.
@SimplyBeautifulArt That's what I thought
This is the Ackermann function
As you can see, its pretty easy making some decently large numbers. Try A(9,9) and it will Overflow.
A(4,1) overflows already lol
@SimplyBeautifulArt Nice it seems simple to program
I'm interested by Ruby though for the moment I'm off to eat I'm starving!
@InfiniteMonkey But that one is over 100 bytes
It happens to be 140 bytes
Though it can easily be shrinked under 100
@InfiniteMonkey Have a yummy feast!
23:40
@SimplyBeautifulArt Thanks!
