@Mithrandir how've you been?
fine
extraordinarily busy, but fine
you?
still a bit under the weather but getting better
well, get better soon
@Mithrandir thank you!

o/ @Mithrandir @shredalert
Welcome back @amWhy
11:26
Hello @user400188
11:55
and hello @user21820
@shredalert: Hello! Glad to hear you're getting better. How are things?
@user21820 Slowly picking the pace with all my activities up again.
@user21820 hope you're well.
That's good. Yep I'm fine. =)
Hello again @user21820 . Nice to see you
@user400188: Same to you! How are your studies going?
11:59
@user21820 Awful :D I've had 2 assignments and 1 test already.
Just kidding, its actually kind of fun.
expect the test on the first day. I had studied a bit in the holidays, but I cant say I was prepared entirely.
12:18
@user400188 I see. Test on the first day must have been unexpected?
yeah. It was a pre-lab test. Most of us had already looked at it in detail, but it was a bit of a shock to be given it anyway.
technically it was the second day, but I had no classes the day before so it was the first for me.
I see.
What kind of courses are you taking?
Thre names of the units are, Quantum and Optical Physics, Mechatronics System Design, Physics research Laboratories, From Stars to Black Holes.
more or less in that order of fun as well.
12:33
Ah I see.
From Stars to Black Holes sounds like an astronomy intro course.
@user400188 sounds like you are just the kind of reader who'll enjoy the Feynmen Lectures.
I think I have seen those, but not all of them.
@user400188: Also, you may want to consider not giving exact names of your courses next time, if you want to preserve anonymity. =)
@user400188 I think it's split into three books
I have a book on functional analysis coming in the mail. Looking forward to it. It's got a numerical analysis bent to it.
12:37
Ah
I'll be away for quite a while now. So see you all later!
bye @user21820
@user21820 see you later!
@amWhy Nom nom nom, yes, I was away at dinner. How'd you know ;)
@SimplyBeautifulArt o/
13:08
@SimplyBeautifulArt what you up to?
Food
and C.A.T.S. xD
Always good
Kinda addicting to a game on my phone.
13:29
Goodnight everyone
13:52
@SimplyBeautifulArt I'm addicted to SE and food, but that's it
@Mithrandir And air?
=P
Yep ;)
14:28
@Mithrandir lol

@ParamanandSingh: You may like to read what Daniel Fischer said here about no deletion capability on android app, and also the post linked by SBA about other limitations.

1 hour later…
16:01
@user21820: but who uses android app! apps are not good for creating content, they are good for consuming content. I exclusively use Firefox with desktop mode on my smartphone. No difference at all compared to laptop (apart from lack of physical keyboard).
@user21820: but i agree there might be very few smartphone users like me
@ParamanandSingh I don't even use a smart-phone, and solely use my laptop to access the internet. =)
@user21820: then consider yourself lucky! mathjax rendering is slow in smartphone browsers and takes up lot of memory. Sometimes I manage to type a full 10 line math equation and due to memory I have to kill firefox. Very frustrating, but the phone is very handy
perhaps the experience on tab might be better (but i don't own a tab)
I don't own one either. Have you tried disabling MathJax and using a bookmarklet to render it when you want?
(I haven't tried but that seems like how I might try to solve the issue in your case.)
is there any info on meta about this? i am not aware
but to be honest, if i need to type long equations i get hold of my laptop
nothing beats the power of keyboard
16:18
@ParamanandSingh xD
@ParamanandSingh Well there are 2 possible solutions. (1) Right-click on some equation on the main site and choosing Math Settings −> Math Renderer −> Plain source, and then switch back only when you want to render it. (2) Use the bookmarklets here, which are also linked from this meta post.
I sort of knew those existed for MathJax in chat, so it didn't take long to find them. =)
16:38
@user21820: will try this feature on phone
@SimplyBeautifulArt: your question about gamma values and their link with AGM (and elliptic integrals) really took away my weekend! Although I still don't know about $\Gamma(1/5)$ this overall exercise helped me to revisit Borwein's great book Pi and the AGM.
@ParamanandSingh ;)
17:32
Hey @projectilemotion
Hi @SimplyBeautifulArt, I just came back from vacation.
I can answer more questions now :)
And how are you doing?

Q: Are course grade distributions supposed to be bell shaped?

Michael StachowskyI just got done teaching my first course, and my grades are heavily skewed: I consider my assessments to be fair and have had them vetted by more experienced faculty. Also, the course averages are usually high in this course (mine was 83.5 or so). However, it seems like I have a strange dist...

Yes, your grades should definitely come out as a bell curve. In fact, you want all your student's to be aiming for a 50, because anything above that is overachieving.
21:34
@SimplyBeautifulArt I don't fully agree with your sentiments. If there is a bell curve, it should be graphed over the interval between 50%(or lower) and 100%. And, as discussed in that post, it should depend on the nature of the class. I don' think there's a one correct answer to the question.
