3:04 PM
@SimplyBeautifulArt Did you solve the $n!$ problem?

Have any ideas?

I'm not good enough
Modular arithmetic

Modular Arithmetic is not needed. Well, I used it but it turned out to be unnecessary.
I will share with you a solution by a mathematician named Guy then.

3:08 PM
Pick an integer $k>1$, and let $n=k^2-1$. We will show that at least one of $n!+1$ and $(n+1)!+1$ can’t be a square.
Indeed, if $n!+1=m^2$ then
$(n+1)!+1 = (n+1)n!+1 = k^2n!+1 = k^2(m^2-1)+1 = (km)^2-n$
Now, clearly $n!+1>n+1$, so $m>k$ and $mk>k^2$. It follows that
$(km-1)^2 = (km)^2-2km+1 < (km)^2-n$
So, finally, the number $(n+1)!+1 = (km)^2-n$ lies strictly between the consecutive perfect squares $(km-1)^2$ and $(km)^2$, so it cannot itself be a perfect square.

@S.C.B. that might take me a while to digest
@Hey-men-whatsup trust me, you don't need any experience
Just some crazy creativity

It's not mine. Mine is different. This is by Guy K. But I think mine would be even more difficult. It involves Quadratic Residues and Quadratic Reciprocity.

How much do you know about that?

3:13 PM
:(
So you probably wouldn't understand mine then. Are you interested?

Not now :-(

OK.

Who?

That above was what I was trying to do
But I failed...

3:16 PM
Guy K. struck me as an very smart person to do it the way he did. Quadratic Reciprocity is elementary, but his makes mine look too difficult.

3:29 PM
@SkeletonBow YOOOOOOOOOO
Hi
@SkeletonBow Don't bother trying to read the entire transcript of this room. Its far too long XD

my first value is 94507553033247072445694130922578552771619966636721593240209570581857272418923
generated random, using uniform distribution, is it ok?

@Hey-men-whatsup If you ignore 1, the next smallest value my function outputs is something like $4(7\uparrow)4$

@Hey-men-whatsup Well you have to assign how many numbers it produces, right?

3:33 PM
Then you stand no chance XD

well that's first ever produced, will increase over time miahahaha

If you took the example image I sent you (you can use it btw), the amount of digits in H(3,3,3) is greater than, like, the number of atoms in the universe
@Hey-men-whatsup :| You have to give me one fixed value man
it can't be changing over time

Not that I think it'd get you anywhere if it ran since the big bang
:-/

@Shobhit Do you know how to code?

@SimplyBeautifulArt, how long your digits are?

3:47 PM
Um
So the idea of "digits" doesn't make sense to my number
:|
Like, it has far far far more than a Graham's number of digits

that's what i was talking about, I couldn't measure how big is it mathematically hahahahaha
XD

Well
12
Q: Could someone tell me how large this number is?

Simply Beautiful ArtContext: If you guys didn't know, I'm running a nice little contest to see who can program the largest number. More specific rules if you are interested may be found in my chat room (click here to join). If you are entering, do note that I am accepting entries for quite a while (ignore all the ...

@Hey-men-whatsup At the end
there is an explanation of how we measure large numbers

yes, i know how to code

No, at the end
I talk about FGH and other things
they are different systems we use to "size up" our numbers

Hmm.. I get it I need a scale system which is in turn to be the 'upper' arrows
@Shobhit, code it now then

3:52 PM
(or bigger, in the case that up arrows fail to suffice)

studying, exam tommorow

@Shobhit Good luck
@Hey-men-whatsup Have you tried my up arrow code?

I'll try it later, I've a little brother fighting for youtube

3:59 PM
thank u :)

1 hour later…
5:08 PM
@S.C.B. :P

5:23 PM
@S.C.B. You mentioned that the MathJax on a single synthetic division was hard... I can definitely feel you. I wrote up a post explaining how to do it the other day that requires me to format around 20 different synthetic division tables and keep track of them. It was a nightmare. I also messed up the post at first, so I had to rewrite it all. -_-

Using Meta Stackexchange's quick tutorial.

I really want to write a script that sends my phone a message whenever this chat is active. Perhaps check every 15 minutes and see if anything has happened; if nothing has, we declare the chat inactive and the next post activates it
Or perhaps I could write it as an android app.... Hmmm

@Brevan The current official app is horrible. Need to be changed. Like a lot.

5:29 PM
Send me that app when you make it

Although I use android.

@Xam Want a run-down on my number?

@Xam I assure you the first third of the explanation of my number isn't so bad
@S.C.B. Do you have any ideas to beat my number?
@AkivaWeinberger Are you awake?

6:03 PM
With the best of intentions: One good measure of the quality of the questions one chooses to answer is to count how many of the questions you answer are subsequently closed/put on hold. If answering questions like these (which then become questions put on hold) accounts for any more than 20 % of your reputation, please review the site's standards and expectations of askers and answerers alike.
Okay, I'm taking off my bi-ch hat now.

6:14 PM
Where's @Simply?

@amWhy Troubleshooting things for my parents
lol

@projectilemotion No offense intended. I understand the eagerness; but it's usually best, when an OP has shown a pattern of not accepting answers, to have a friend or another user ask about why the OP doesn't seem to want to accept any answers he/she receives. That way, there's no conflict of interest.

lol
lmao, I suppose that's how you do it

@SimplyBeautifulArt What? Are you replying to me?

Kinda.
Kinda just sitting in the background

6:29 PM
I'm just trying to help spare folks from some of the "growing pains" one suffers when progressing at MSE. Perhaps I should keep my mouth shut sometimes! (Okay...I don't want to see this last comment of mine starred! :D
I don't go looking for situations I might object to, really! My closest watch is on the (new) incoming questions, and their answers.... and that's when I'm not reviewing in the review queue, or having fun in the chatrooms!

I personally try to hunt down questions in uniquely isolated tags that don't get a lot of attention
At least, that's what I'm doing right now
Also hunting for help to my number problem

Have you every heard of the album "The Wall", by Pink Floyd? Just curious whether it gets circulation these days. I have two 21 year old nieces, who love a lot of music from that era and earlier.

Nah
I don't really listen to music often
probably should
lol

@amWhy No problem, I'm glad you told me this.
@SimplyBeautifulArt Hi, how are you?

@projectilemotion Good and leaving soon
:-/

6:38 PM
Oh, I see. Same with me.

:'( Want to chat more

@projectilemotion Well, I did upvote your answer, in the end, because it deserved an upvote.

Thanks, @amWhy

@projectilemotion And you deserved the accept, too ;-)

Maybe I should have a 512 character contest
and learn how to implement my THING_n function
I wonder how people would respond to that when I post it on MSE XD
X'D
maybe in a few months or a year
lol
What am I doing?! I got to go! Cya!

7:17 PM
Hello @user21820 !

@amWhy: Hello!
How are you?

Just about to ask you the same! I'm fine. How about you?

I'm great, except now quite sleepy haha..
Was working on my idea for @SimplyBeautifulArt's big number contest.
Are you participating too? I'm actually rather curious to see who can beat me. =D
And I never realized some of these big numbers are so closely related to proof theory.

I'll enjoy seeing the efforts! No, not planning to participate.
@user21820 That's why I'm so eagerly awaiting your efforts!

Ah I see! I think I might just be able to surprise you with my program. Anyway now I'm about to go off to sleep... We could chat again soon! =)

7:27 PM
Sleep well!

8:10 PM
@amWhy I will sometimes answer questions after I mark to close them, but generally not in depth... at most a hint probably (though there are of course exceptions). I tend to only answer questions I imagine will be closed if there is something interesting to add to the discussion.
@amWhy Also, I like to imagine that many of the people who ask questions don't speak English well and speak Mathematics even less, and so they aren't even sure how to ask their question. I have seen many closed questions because of this.
@amWhy Moreover, I enjoy studying real-analysis a lot (personal interest and the fact I know the most about it) and I find that most real-analysis questions are about calculus and get closed quickly

Xam
@SimplyBeautifulArt sorry, but right now I'm searching about some algebra stuff and I'm very busy.

9:08 PM
I wasn't speaking directly to you, @BrevanEllefsen. I understand the English-language deficit. And like you, I am more generous is assessing their quality. (I'm not a stickler for grammar, nor even about mathjax. I think the qualities I look for relate more to sincerity, and effort/research/thought on the question, expressed in any way the OP is able to (and even the effort/thought process is difficult to follow.
Oooohh, seems I am Alone in this chat. Ahhhh, the peace and quiet... :-)
@Starfall Hooray, the wee bit of peace and quiet of this chat has been enough for me. Glad to see you. I think @SimplyBeautifulArt had to go just a little while ago.

@amWhy hi
i see you are no longer trumpin it

9:25 PM
@amWhy I'll join the party :) I didn't think you were speaking to me, just figured it would throw my two cents in cuz I was bored and had nothing to do.

@BrevanEllefsen well, we don't answer questions solely for the sake of the OP

@Starfall I was having fun....but just in case any one found it offensive (who could find it offensive?) but just in case, I fought the trumpoon to regain my domain! ;-)

you can, and should, also do it for the sake of posterity
@amWhy i don't think anyone found it offensive

@BrevanEllefsen Well, I was speaking to anyone who cared to read, and since you responded (having read my comment), I certainly was speaking to you!
@Starfall It's funny, because I never even temporarily changed my avatar image or my username in the 6-some years of my time at MSE. But in the last month, I did so many times.... And I'm sure I'll do it again, fairly soon, too!

i see

9:33 PM
@Starfall I was trying to prove a point to the mods, and also had fun with it: Some user has the username "Boot Scootin' Pootton" with avatar of a picture of Putin. They seemed to think it was all innocent, if immature fun. So that prompted me to have fun too, at the Trumpoon's expense, with the excuse that I would have some silly and immature fun, too!

@amWhy you've convinced me to do the same. I don't know what to change it to though. Somethjnf exciting for sure.

One definite plus to this site are the funny and hilarious moments...I think humor actually aids the learning process.... it helps ease anxiety, and helps us laugh at ourselves. This site (and I'm sure me too) needs to lighten up sometimes!

10:07 PM
@BrevanEllefsen @amWhy my original picture was related to divergent series

Do your still have it, @SimplyBeautifulArt ?
But I do remember you having a different picture.

@amWhy I saved it on the second highest voted question

Where? I clicked on both the second-highest-voted-answer, and also clicked on the second question/answer listed in your profile, itself?

10:23 PM
13
A: Visually stunning math concepts which are easy to explain

Simply Beautiful ArtDivergent Series can be visual: from the Wikipedia showing that $(1-1+1-1+\dots)^2=1-2+3-4+\dots$

I meant on the site lol

I liked that picture more tbh.
I should choose a profile picture at least
after 2 years
what to make it? hmm.

@SimplyBeautifulArt Ahhh, yes, I see. (Sometimes the brilliant can be excruciatingly obtuse). I get it now!!!
Hello, @TheGreatDuck. How are you doing?

10:45 PM
good
according to @SimplyBeautifulArt I'm up to no good.

@TheGreatDuck What? He must have joking, no?
@TheGreatDuck I pinged you in Constructive Feedback, if you'd rather talk there.

@amWhy Nope, TheGreatDuck is definitely evil
Just look at his eyes. You can sense the evil radiating off of him

I sent half this conversation is happening elsewhere which is really confusing me XD

@BrevanEllefsen meh, its fine
You just accept that there will be things you don't know
especially if you restrict yourself to first order logic

11:07 PM
@SimplyBeautifulArt And how much logic have you studied, may I ask?

none
You may wish to ask the more general statement "how much of any math I've done have I actually studied about"
My response will be something along the lines of basic calculus and googology.

Well, say "Aye" when you're interested in doing so!

@SimplyBeautifulArt Hi.

WHO CALLS ME?

11:11 PM
I am?

:I
How can I help you?

I don't need help :D

There is something to be said for studying wide, initially, because it enables learners to see connections among many branches, and helps organizing subsequent learning. Passion to focus one one narrow domain is completely understandable, but the most Beautiful Art arises from a synthesis of a broader base. Narrow focus should happen when one is discussing a PhD thesis with one's advisor.

But if I'm annoying you right now, @Simply just say the word.

11:13 PM
Then why did you wake me from my slumber?
@amWhy Nah, you good
lol

My problem in life right now is time

:-(
Never have enough of that

Not enough time to study wide
so I have to restrict my time to more specific subjects
I am going to attack Abstract Algebra next
With a little number theory here. I'm not a big number theory buff

Plan. Attack. Kill. P.A.K. it man

11:41 PM
Whelp
Holy Jesus BEAF really is big

@SimplyBeautifulArt What, poor dear!

T^T
I wonder if my THINGY function overcomes BEAF
Also, please do not try this at home

@BrevanEllefsen my problem in life now is too much time
i have too much time, i am bored all the time

@Starfall Lame
Lmao
Did you guys get that notification?

@BrevanEllefsen Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock, ...

11:46 PM
yes

Okee dokie

@SimplyBeautifulArt Yes indeed! I know @user21820 is interested in the competition, and so I hope received the notice.

lol
:P
I wish all contestants good luck
@amWhy Wait
Isn't it beautiful to see just white space over there on the other side?

Ohhhh indeed!

I swear, this BEAF is huge, but even then, I fear it may not suffice for my THING function.
