I think in 学校文法, the て thingy is a 接続助詞, and it attaches to 動詞 and 形容詞, but it doesn't attach to 形容動詞. 日本文法大辞典 says 「動詞・形容詞およびそれらと同型の活用を有する助動詞の連用形に接続する」. And the で ending in 形容動詞 is a 活用語尾, not considered to be the same thing as て

But in 日本語教育, instead of て being a 接続助詞, it's considered an inflectional ending (て形). And in that system, ナ形容詞 don't inflect, the で part is considered a separate word.

So they don't have a て形 in that system either, but だ does, and the て形 of だ is で.

But I know some people are unhappy with calling that a て形・・・

「だ」の「て形」は「で」・・・
「だ」の「連用形」も、「で」かな?

You seem to have failed to explain とのこと at the last, which is confusing OP most? — naruto 10 hours ago

OP seems to understand it though. — nomithekid 6 hours ago

@choco Well, だ is a contraction of で+ある, and で is a contraction of にて (historically, I mean). So both で and であって have a て in them, historically speaking.

I think だ has up to three 連用形 depending on the analysis, which are で and に and だっ
Anonymous
Having multiple 連用形 and multiple 未然形 and so forth makes the 学校文法 analysis kind of confusing . . .
Anonymous
The forms like だっ are sometimes separated out and called 音便形 :-)
Anonymous
I like when different things are given different names. It makes it less confusing

I don't think て is really a 接続助詞, I think it's been morphologized – that is, it's become an inflectional ending, not a separate word.

@choco But I think broccoli forest objected to calling で a "te form"
Anonymous
I do think it's commonly taught to learners as a "te form"

So it seems like people aren't really consistent about how they use that term :-(
