science has a weird way of not doing what you want/expect
I was supposed to prepare two samples, one ignited and one didn't. "Igniting" was supposed to be the proper way, but it didn't give the sample I wanted. Weirdly enough the one that didn't ignite was the good sample.
and nobody knows why

Q: How to ask someone to repeat what they said

Amani KilumangaA recurring problem I have in Japanese dialogue is when I can't quite hear what someone said, attempt to ask them something to the effect of "excuse me?" or "what was that?" only for them to rephrase it (most likely because they think I don't know the word). In some cases, they might even try to...

@AmaniKilumanga I think it's fine to ask another question

@AmaniKilumanga I doubt it gets any shorter than もう一度お願いします though. Or maybe you're looking for this kind of thing? shitennoji.ac.jp/ibu/docs/toshokan/kiyou/53/kiyo53-16.pdf
Taking a word fragment you could pick up and echoing it with an upward inflection seems like an easy strategy. でも unambiguous ではないですね。

@mirka That seems like a good reference. It appears もう一度お願いします is the best match, and I guess the only way to make it more clear is to use more words (e.g. 今の聞き取れませんでしたが…).
Echoing only works if you heard enough.
