Some people say おい, うい, etc to mean はい/yes

What is the word for vegan? I'll be traveling to Japan in May with friends, who are vegan, and I want to be able to explain that so they don't get the wrong kind of food.

The dictionary says 完全菜食主義者, which would mean a person who is a vegan. I know 菜食主義者 is (a person who is) vegetarian, so that makes sense

If you remove the 者 ("person") from the end, then you get the principle of eating vegetables (菜食主義) = "vegetarianism", and if you add 完全 to the beginning, you get veganism... So I guess you can say 完全菜食主義の～ for "vegan ～"

This uses ビーガン (which it spells ヴィーガン but I think it's the same either way)

I guess if it were me I would start with ビーガン／ヴィーガン and see if it's understood, and if not, then I'd try to explain using the more technical sounding 完全菜食主義(者), and if that's not understood, then I'd try to explain in words :-)

That is "vu". You can write va vi vu ve vo as ヴァ・ヴィ・ヴ・ヴェ・ヴォ

However, Japanese don't necessarily distinguish between /v/ and /b/, so they may all be pronounced (or spelled!) like バ・ビ・ブ・ベ・ボ

Generally, ヴ only appears in katakana, but very rarely you may see う゛ in hiragana, too.
