@snailplane Why do you think UltimateNoob posted the same answer twice?
Oops I pasted the wrong link
Austin Powers...
I wanted to ask him if he was sure 召使い can mean slave as well as servant
Servants would be offended if you called them slaves, no?

i wonder if おれ is etymologically related to おのれ
indeed it is! and an amazing wikipedia entry on pronouns..

hey guys! so I found this site with News in Slow Japanese, and I was going to put it in the meta.japanese.stackexchange.com/questions/756/…, but I didn't know what heading to put it under
It's a neat site, I was really excited to find it
I wish they had a reading of the articles in natural speed, but I guess that defeats the purpose, ahah
Anyway, unless anyone has a better idea, I guess I'll put it under "newspapers"
hmm... seems reasonable
that's what I thought
I wanted there to a listening section, but I guess there aren't a lot of resources just for that.
聴解とか
Well... not too much that's free anyways
Hah, yeah
And I find that when I do find something like a practice exam, the repeat value of them is really low
I've started watching let's plays on youtube though, that's really fun for me

A friend of mine has asked if "軽々と" is the right way to confess your love: twitter.com/miyagawa/status/428350028185235456
Don't know if it's a serious question or a joke, though.

I've gotten into the habit, when speaking in English with Japanese people, of speaking slowly and putting extra effort into pronunciation.
One person I spoke to said that I speak nice and slow, whereas most native speakers talk quickly. It makes me think that most people learning a language think that the native speakers talk quickly, regardless of which language they're learning.
@Chocolate mentioned in japanese.stackexchange.com/q/14311/91 that she hadn't heard of "小便芸者". Does that mean she already knew 転び芸者 and だるま芸者? :)

@ssb へ~~
意外やなあ
@AndrewGrimm It looks to me like he's saying he doubts it rather than asking it
「こんなふうに使う?使わないよね。」って感じで
転び芸者 も だるま芸者 も、ちょっとよくわかんない
「だるま芸者?太ってる芸者?」みたいな

So my dictionary lists 早く as a derived 副詞, but it means specifically 「早い時期に。ずっと以前に。」 or 「早い時刻・時期」. 速く in your example is 形容詞の連用形 and it means 速やかで
Anonymous
> 速く回れば回るほど ← 副詞「早く」ではなく、形容詞の連用形「速く」だよね
Anonymous
意味に違いがあるから
Anonymous
But 早く could also be 形容詞の連用形
Anonymous
There are a few adverbs dictionaries list as derived from 形容詞の連用形. I feel like I should understand what the difference is in each case, but I don't :-)

Ohh so many "removed"
what happened...
「早く」って副詞でもあるんだああ
なんでだああ
う~ん。。。線引きが分からない・・・

@Chocolate Hehe!

Two of my dictionaries have a 副詞「早く」
Anonymous
広辞苑 doesn't...
Anonymous
But under はやい it has (9)(連用形を副詞的に用いて)
Anonymous
明鏡 has examples for the 副詞: 「早く(に)父と死別した」 and 「朝早くからおそくまで」

@Chocolate Sorry I removed the old ones... I thought it would be less confusing if I erased what I wrote and started over :-)

@snaillplane sorry i did not give props to you for the srt files you told me about yesterday. based on your lead, i've also gotten the sdr files for "hanzawa naoki" here:
and got the videos, themselves, on dailymotion.com.
but, i got too excited about the srt files and, without doing due dilligence, installed the srt reader off of cnet. the installer gave me the conduit malware. :-(
Anonymous
Oh... You can play SRT files in VLC and such.
i sure thought i could trust cnet... but, my system is back to normal. again, thanks for your telling me about those srt files. those are so useful!

I'm glad your system is back to normal! :-)

Are there any common words that use こう for 江? I don't know what the cutoff for "common" is...
