In AmE, it's most widespread in non-standard English in the Upper Midwest, like around Minnesota.

Attestations go back over a hundred years, but since it's looked down upon, children are taught that it's a mistake they must unlearn, so you don't hear it as much from educated adults.

It's normal for languages to have some back-and-forth between pairs like these, though, as with learn and teach.
