The quality of questions has been pretty awful lately. A few repeating offenders and then slews of unregistered users...

I've been buried under a work project for the last 2 weeks, or I'd be more useful for that.

@DariusJahandarie My recommendation is to edit aggressively. If a crappy question could be transformed into a half-decent question that might incidentally answer the original crappy question, go ahead and edit. If no such edit is possible, please vote to close. :)

@jkerian Dunno, I often feel closing is not the right option when a good edit isn't available. Often, what makes a question bad is complete lack of research. What compounds that is a user who continuously shows their ineptitude, which makes you feel like time is being wasted answering the question which stems from a misunderstanding probably no one else would have.

@DariusJahandarie I get what you're saying... but I think it helps to evaluate a bad question a little bit differently. If you judge it exclusively in light of "Does this make the site/internet a better place?" yes/no "Can I modify it to make the site/internet a better place?" yes/no. If the answers are no/no, vote to close... end of story.

Don't get too tied up in the particular person's question or understanding.

The problem is that looking at it so locally makes you completely miss any side effects it might be having. Sure, almost any question gets a yes for both of those, because more information almost always makes the site/internet a better place, even if it's unlikely to be used by someone else (because there's still a chance!). But, if it's frustrating the community and making people feel like they are wasting their time, that completely offsets that sliver of an improvement.

When 90% of the questions I see a day make me facepalm, it's frustrating, because I don't feel like I'm making a good use of my time by visiting the site. I doubt I'm the only one who feels like that.

A further effect of these questions is that I feel the users who write the high-quality answers on the site often don't answer them, and since they stay unanswered, someone eventually strays along and writes some cruddy answer on it, which gets accepted, and slowly a subcommunity of bad question writers + answerers forms where they give each other positive feedback.

Anyways, I think that all these effects and feelings are subtle and this is all probably a fairly nuanced subject, but such things start being grating over time, at least for me.

@DariusJahandarie I think we may have very different standards for those two questions. I'm far more likely to vote 'no'... and I need to stop being such a coward with closing outright translation questions. There's no particular need for me to wait for close votes before acting, the community can always vote to reopen

I think the only way they get "no"s if you look at the more complicated non-local effects they are having on the community. Otherwise how could they possibly not be improving the internet unless they are a straight up troll/joke question?

Ideally, we're creating something more like mini-wikipedia articles here, and less like yahoo answers.

"making the site/internet a better place" is not simply the negation of "making the site/internet a worse place". The 'blah' stuff can and should be trimmed
