@jkerian I'd be pretty damn happy to just leave Europe. :) Spent a year in Seattle during uni and loved it. But sure, Tokyo would be the ultimate choice. (not really interested in living elsewhere in Japan)

@gibbon Most of my serious options are "near Tokyo"... I don't think I'd like to live in Tokyo itself

I lived up in Tochigi when I was there, the transfer will put me in Kanagawa... roughly an hour away from the first "Yamanote" station

Although, admitedly, if the rental company is the same with me as it is for a friend who is living there now... and the closest place they can find is a 90 minute commute... screw it, I'll live in Tokyo

(it would be kinda nice to have the opposite commute from everyone else)

Ah commuting is of course never fun.. 20min walk for me now. Or 5min tram if I'm lazy. :)

Given that I live in a small American city, our public transit system is crap. I can probably walk to work faster than take the bus. But it's a pretty nice ~10minute ride on my motorcycle.

I guess you could find something to do on the train though. Other than playing with the cellphone or reading novels.

Of course... I've been having this argument in here for the last few days on a regular basis; but when writing a "So... you're brand new to studying Japanese?" FAQ, I find myself typing "The first thing you're going to want to do is learn the kana." >_>

I got started on this late last week when I had plenty of time, work is keeping me a bit busier this week though
