What's the status of the French language proposals?
Is there currently one where the whole site is francophone-only?
21:04
no @gilles I don't think so
The 3 proposal got "merged" by the way
@Mvy thanks
@Mvy yeah, I got the mail (I committed to F<->E translation).
Well, I'm not interested in a beginner's French site
That won't be for beginners only
@Mvy I should have said “learners”, perhaps
What I mean is that a place that's not French-speaking-only isn't going to attract experts. It'll have some natives, but few actual experts.
Jez
Jez
@Gilles if you say so.
@Jez How many French speakers do you know who readily speak English? Outside the English-speaking Internet, I mean
Jez
Jez
21:19
dunno, but a) more should learn and b) they can just speak french on the site
F'x
F'x
21:29
@Gilles lots, including researchers in the field
not that they are fluent in English, but that wouldn't put them off or be much of a drawback for them
but I'd put it that way: if the site gets enough traffic that it can be successfully split into specific subsites, I will gladly support that
but let's first get a working site before we bicker about subdivising
@Fx I'm not for subdividing; my concern is for the site quality
If SE can't even have a truly expert-level site about English, it's not going to have one about French either
Jez
Jez
what's not truly expert-level about EL&U?
21:53
@Jez see Jeff's sortie of a few weeks ago and the ensuing drama
I don't agree with Jeff (comparing ELU with Urban Dictionary is stupid and insulting), but I have heard the sentiment that ELU is too basic from other sources
Jez
Jez
Jeff is pretty much alone in his opinion
so I don't lend much weight to that
@Jez No, he isn't. I don't share his disdain, but I rate ELU as advanced, not expert
Jez
Jez
so there are now 2.
@Jez He's not the only SE employee with a similar outlook
And I've shown ELU to people who've never posted on SE, and who didn't find ELU to be of sufficient quality to be interesting
Jez
Jez
i haven't heard a similar outlook from any others. a toeing of the line, maybe
or maybe they just didn't have need of an English Q&A site
21:58
@Jez you never hear from the people who aren't interested in your site
Jez
Jez
at the end of the day, there are only so many truly 'expert' questions to ask
no Q&A site will fit everyone's definition of 'expert'
how has Islam grown so much in France? I thought the UK encouraged multiculturalism the most aggressively...
@Jez Ça c'est une question politique
Jez
Jez
22:23
On peut voir ça comme ça ouais. Enfin, chacun ses croyances.
Jez
Jez
@Mvy what is 'Enfin' doing in that sentence?
Définitivement, pour conclure, pour terminer.
Jez
Jez
hmm
il n'y a aucune traduction anglaise je crois
@Jez here, it roughly means “oh, well, each to their own beliefs”
Jez
Jez
on pourrait pas mettre ce mot là en anglais
yeah, i figured
22:27
I would have used "well" too
Jez
Jez
> Marine Le Pen n'a pas condamné les propos de son père, selon qui les attentats d'Oslo sont un "accident" explicable par la "naïveté" des autorités norvégiennes, qui n'auraient "pas pris la mesure du danger mondial" que représente "l'immigration massive".
22:50
Ben elle va pas condamné ça, c'est un peu le fond de commerce du FN...
