Q: What does "play this ability only if you could play a sorcery" mean?

OmegaWarMechThis is a stretch and in no way am I trying to dull the game. However, I recently ran across this potential issue. Many cards have an ability that may read, '...Play this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery.' and some that say '...Play this ability only if you could play a sorcery. Now...

...welp. Now I need to account for major templating changes introduced in Strixhaven.
It used to be "activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery." Now they've gone back to old-style templating in an effort to reduce rules text verbosity: "Activate only as a sorcery."
So many players are going to be confused by these rules text changes.
At least "activate only as a sorcery" is going to be familiar to old-school Magic veterans who were used to seeing "play this ability as a sorcery"...

As if the numerous variations of "play as a sorcery" over the years wasn't already confusing enough...
