It is as much chess as chess puzzles. The point of Fisherandom is to have the same game, just with more game in it.

Chess been around for several thousand years, expecting it to be gone in 20 is just silly.
Look, I don't understand what we arguing about anymore. You don't agree that there are problems with chess as is? You don't like this particular alternative? If latter, than it's up to taste, anyone can play what they want. If it's former, well, if Bobby Fisher doesn't convince you, I can't either.

@Deo I think what you're missing is that there's a network effect with games. It doesn't matter if there are issues with chess, and it doesn't matter if chess960 is by some valuation "better". Regular chess is well known. It has more tournaments, and more prestigious tournaments. It has more famous players.
In other words, however you perceive no matter how you perceive the qualities of the two variants in a vacuum, if you want to play a competitive game, you will have much better luck with regular chess.
It's like the Frontier format of MTG. It's supposed to fix the problems with the Modern format, and for all I know it actually does. But it's not official, and it doesn't have a critical mass of players, so it's not worth learning or building a deck for.
And even if it did, people wouldn't stop playing Modern. Because however much better Frontier might be, Modern is the format you can play in major official tournaments.

I'm not aiming to change tournament chess scene. All I say is that chess as is has problems and there are alternatives. Anyone is free to play whatever version they like most. Personally, if I want to play chess, I'd go with fisherandom, in the internet era it's not that hard to find opponents for whatever version you prefer.
The point is that telling people "you shouldn't memorize openings; play chess960 instead" doesn't make sense because they solve different problems

Memorizing openings IS a problem
I think you're being deliberately obtuse. Memorizing openings solves the problem "I want to do better in classic chess games". Chess960 solves the problem "I want to play a game where I don't have to memorize openings to do better"
Telling people to play chess960 instead of memorizing openings is basically saying that they should change their goals because you think that the requirements for accomplishing their goals are problematic/onerous.

If you view chess from perspective of pure strategy game, then memorizing openings is a hurdle one need to overcome in order to get to the strategy. It is not the only possible view, ofcource.
Whether or not that's true, it doesn't change what I said. Saying to go a different way instead doesn't help someone who wants to get over the hurdle

I'm not telling anybody to play one version or another. I'm just telling that there is different option.
I'm not going to get into an argument about who said what and how it might be interpreted, when we can all just look at the chat log.
Sure, chess960 is an option that might appeal to people who have the same concerns about classic chess that you do.

You make it sound like those conserns are some made-up nonsense. Don't you agree that chess as is has problems?
17:55
Honestly I'm more invested in this argument than in the game of chess itself.
I was never trying to imply that your concerns are "made-up nonsense". Just that different people have a variety of feelings about different aspects of the games that they play
I've spent enough time with MTG to see that there are different varieties of players, and there are many aspects of the game that some people see as problematic, and others see as beneficial, or important for the health of the game.

@doppelgreener Do you watch MLP? I don't remember if you've mentioned it here before
I've seen a few episodes
I have a handful of friends who like the series, so I've picked up things about it
& when it came time to pick a new avatar, someone recommended i choose a pony and i thought a green changeling would be appropriate :D
I've kind of been a Chrysalis fan since she was introduced back in season 2. She had a great twist villain introduction
Ooh. She's that early in? Cool!
I might realistically actually see some of her episodes then.
Well, like a number of villains in the series, she shows up for a two-part episode and then just disappears
I'm pretty sure her next appearance was in the season 7 finale
if she's in 2 episodes i'll definitely see those o/
22:58
It's the season 2 finale
23:19
Thanks. :)
