09:15
It took me a while but I finally setup the IOT.SE's public beta party:
If anyone wants to celebrate our public beta.^ :)
09:58
If anyone interested in documentations have a look at this proposal.

2 hours later…
11:37
@Aurora0001 I apparently joined the club of people who got their moderator nomination downvoted, you're not alone

1 hour later…
12:49
Hello everyone, does anyone know how to create .sp file (subtitles), I googled for hours and could not find anything (the api which I use says following doc.dvdbuilder.com/net/3.2/…) not sure how I should continue
doc.dvdbuilder.com/net/3.2/
13:00
Can't say I do
From a quick look, though, I don't think that that documentation tells you how to create such a file, only how to describe that it's somehow in the container file
@utdev I'd just check out the top 3 free subtitle editors and see if they offer that file type, if so, you have an easy example of how the format looks like.
13:51
@Aurora0001 what about a new chat event ;) now that we're public we need to generate traffic
14:28

Q: Congratulations, we're public!

bangIt's been a touch pull in some ways. Many users have devoted much time publicizing, discussing, and working toward what we have before us today: A public site! I just want to say that I am thrilled, as I know many others are. Also, I want to take a moment to say a thank you to those people wh...

Wondering, when will be the mods named?
14:45
@BenceKaulics 7 days after public beta start.
@anonymous2 Thanks ^^
@Helmar Not necessarily.
There will be some pro-tems, and I have a feeling that the minimum rep for privileges doesn't go up until they are appointed.
@anonymous2 The reputation barriers are already up ;)
@Ghanima sounds good to me
@Helmar congratulations! You win the Controversial hat :P
@Aurora0001 you said, no. new. hats.
14:56
Well, AuroraHats are now over
So Controversial is part of AuroraHats v1.1
@Helmar You're right! Sorry, I was getting messed up between IoT and mech.SE. :)
Which keeps my promise of no new AuroraHats

Q: Harmony Hub Security

HelmarToday I—likely—stumbled upon a major security leak in my home automation setup. Scenario I installed the ha bridge github project on my Raspberry Pi, mainly to see what it can do. I literally just followed the first few steps, downloading and starting the habridge. To my great surprise my Logit...

Enthusiast badge!
Hooray!
Aurora0001 has added an event to this room's schedule.
14:57
sending it back to wherever insecure devices come from
that's the way to go ;)
;-/
more likely
Everyone happy with the Public Beta Party date?
@Aurora0001 It's as good as any. :)
I was hoping it would happen like next week or so
@Ghanima Can do then
@Ghanima Once your a pro-tem? ;)
14:59
Any suggested dates?
@Aurora0001 Things has their's on Wednesday.
@anonymous2 wouldn't change a thing
@Ghanima I'm afraid so
@Ghanima I know. Was kidding, as always. :)
Anyways, I twittered the question straight to the official logitech channel ;)
2
15:01
@anonymous2 things has an event?
@Logitech in your face
google
@Aurora0001 TBH, with the site views so low, I was just a tad surprised we actually pulled through.
Happily surprised, BTW.
@anonymous2 I thought the same really
I'm glad too though
15:05
@Aurora0001 what about Monday, again
Yeah, Party :)
@Aurora0001 I have to wonder if the holidays actually helped us because the SE staff was more permissive, but that's just a conjecture.
@Ghanima sounds good to me!
Aurora0001 has removed an event from this room's schedule.
Aurora0001 has added an event to this room's schedule.
First to register!
;)
15:07
@anonymous2 Second ;)
Also, I can get tag wiki edit rep again, woo!
Hmm, just one more meta post away from Convention.
@Aurora0001 More edit reviews for me :)
@Aurora0001 How's that?
Btw I just have to mention that I'm the first to get Enthusiast :D
@anonymous2 Rep barriers are up again
Oh, duh, sorry, I'm slow this morning. :)
15:10
Yeah, I'll need 4k rep before I can edit tag wikis freely again
And 5k for the analytics
Although honestly they're... underwhelming
I have been suffering the effects of shock since I saw we are public.
:)
@Helmar check the review queues if you want some more stuff to do
Done, gotta wait for Sean though as the one other eligible voter
Friday the late answer review queue potentially opens up
Indeed, seems weird though
I wouldn't call any of the answers 'late' yet
30 days + low rep, that's the measure
15:22
@Aurora0001 public beta party?
I thought we'd have an agenda of sorts and not just fun, meh, fun
What sort of agenda do we need?
I admit it would probably make a more successful chat event
what's our next goal? content? traffic?
worshipping the Madnificent?
In that order
15:26
@Helmar has it correct.
Content hopefully leads to traffic
Which leads to more worshippers
:34543273 You do know that room owners can read deleted messages? ;)
2
@Helmar Lol. Yes.
But at least His Madnificence will see that I am penitent. ;)
@anonymous2 are you just about to get 'Trusted User' on the Motor Vehicle SE?
And then the privileges go up?
@Aurora0001 That's right. :)
Anyone know off the top of their heads what the 180degrees hat is?
The cruel world of graduation
> Vote to close a question, be the first to edit the question while it is closed, and vote to reopen it. Hammers are confirmed to work (for both the close and open)
15:35
@Aurora0001 Awesome. I did do that, come to think of it.
I must admit, though, that wasn't off the top of my head
At least more new users voting means more rep for free. And hopefully some more easy, popular questions...
2
@Aurora0001 Yes, lol. BTW, thanks for the UV. ;)
@anonymous2 Well it looked good to me :P
Wonder if google is going to list us as front page for 'harmony hub security'?
15:38
@SeanHoulihane google.ca/…
;)
I think it'll take time for our search rankings to improve
Ideally we want people to link to our site a bit more - that'll bump us a lot
Do you know of any other forums for IoT that we can kind of advertise on?
I've found reddit to be relatively successful
I shared a couple of links in private beta and it got about 50 upvotes
I keep meaning to drop a link on a smaller site for MTConnect (manufacturing IoT), but I'm not aware of anything other than SmartThings forums
Yeah, I tried the SmartThings forums
They didn't seem that interested
Perhaps I could share my IFTTT question with the /r/ifttt subreddit
15:47
Yeah, some of the Google Groups will give you the same response. We found out on 3D Printing SE quickly lol
That would be a great question, I think
Should we start the ball rolling for Community Ads?
@tbm0115 we have
@tbm0115 we've got a few ads on some related sites, but we need a proper ad rather than the Area 51 banner
yepp
Something custom-designed to actually get people's attention would be nice
official site design however is not going to happen during beta
15:52
I'm thinking like this:
7
Q: Community Ads! Let's make 2d ads for ourselves!

Zizouz212When 3D Printing moves into public beta, you're going to want to get the word out. And fast! One of the best ways to advertise ourselves across the entire Stack Exchange network is through community ads. So what are these "Community Ads?" Graduated sites allow the community to advertise releva...

I think that'd be a fantastic idea
I could do a bit of copy pasta to get it started if you'd like
@tbm0115 could you print something
What do you mean?
never mind, just kidding, no need to print it (but you know, 3D is so much better than 2D)
15:58
Bother, I can't see vote counts anymore.
@anonymous2 Grrr!
@Ghanima Aha, I see what you did there. Thanks for the clarification
@Ghanima Yikes!
<@Ghanima sharpens his teeth...>
@anonymous2 you could always install the 'View Vote Counts' userscript
2
104
Q: "View Vote totals" without 1000 rep

Rob W Screenshot About The vote counts are a great tool to determine whether an answer is disputed or not. Unfortunately, not many of us have enough time to join all Stack Exchange websites and get 1000 reputation. This script unlocks the "View Vote counts" feature for those who are not logge...

it seems strange that they "restrict" access to this vital information anyways
16:02
@Aurora0001 That is so cool!
@Ghanima it's really just to reduce API load I think

Q: Let's Advertise with Community Ads!

tbm0115Now that we're in Public Beta, it's time to start thinking of how to spread the word! Let's start this Beta off strong by creating our own ads. Forgive me as a I plagiarize a post from 3D Printing. So what are these "Community Ads?" Graduated sites allow the community to advertise relevant prod...

clickbait
seems to work ;)
Worked for Facebook lol
Might be bad timing though, I expect the 2017 Community Ad Posts to roll out shortly
16:11
That means it's great timing @Helmar!
@Helmar we can close it if needed. It at least provides a spot to let them build in the mean time
No, don't close it
We should make a bunch of possible ads, and float a few on RPi or EE and try to get the rest rolling with the 2017 ads
I'm meaning if Stack releases a new post for the community ads, we can migrate the posts from this post to the new one if necessary. They may not create a new post with one already in existence.
@Aurora0001 we don't have a tag
@Helmar I know, but it's my suggestion for when someone does ask about that
16:15
Ok
If not, that bit can always be edited out
They do, I think it is to keep the ads relevant
@Helmar Leave it to English SE to have such clean titles
@anonymous2 did that stealth ping work?
16:19
@tbm0115 Comes with the territory I guess ;)
4
Q: Stealth pinging, version 2

TùxCräftîñgWhen an inline link contains a ping, the ping is effective. Example: Pings should be ineffective when in an inline link.

@Aurora0001 Yes, it did.
I was sitting here trying to figure out what the significance was.
Interesting, seems easily abused
Just shows as this to me:
example.com/test/test/…
@anonymous2 that worked
Huh, odd.
lol A little delayed
@Ghanima can you get rid of that?
Would anyone mind if I change it to the drop down feed?
16:24
@Helmar suits me
Helmar has made a change to the feeds posted into this room
Helmar has made a change to the feeds posted into this room
@Aurora0001 You were supposed to say, example.com/test/test/@Ghanima, can you change that?
Helmar has made a change to the feeds posted into this room
@anonymous2 what the?
@Ghanima Rofl!
16:26
@Helmar did you mean to add the feed for normal questions too?
Yeah
@Aurora0001 Some sites have that.
I personally like it.
With 2-6 questions a day on the slide down ticker that should be okay
@Helmar Yeah, that's true
Wouldn't work on SO :P
Though frankly I think each user should be able to turn it on or off.
16:27
True
17:18
Hey everyone - my question got in the HNQs!
17:30
@Aurora0001 time for a hat!
@Ghanima perhaps I should create the On Fire hat
:P
Ah that great instrument of unfairness has finally reached IoT, I'll never grasp how it works :D
2
Based on hotness (tm)
you really shouldn't take that personally
17:39
Oh, I'm glad any IoT question made it on there
Do we really want tags for individual countries and routers? I know the UK is special, but still...
@SeanHoulihane It could be a bit problematic, yeah
The only question that uses it is this:
6
Q: Can Alexa read Kindle books in the United Kingdom?

kenorbIs there any way to make Alexa read Kindle books in the UK? I couldn't find any options to do that.

I don't like the routers tag
I'd wait out the country thing though
The tag is probably unnecessary, since no-one will specifically be looking for UK-only questions (I don't think!) and the UK aspect is implied in the question
@Helmar I don't know, I think it might be useful
I don't feel strongly enough about either right now to edit them out.
17:44
Also, my question is now at 78% on the arbitrary hotness scale
It was at 55% earlier
Presumably its correct to accept the tag edit even if the tag is maybe redundant?
I would say to just judge the edit based on the text itself
@SeanHoulihane I judge tag wiki edits on their own merit. Deciding if the tag is necessary is a different decision
18:12
That hot question is taking the top viewed spot soon
It's not even that great of a question really
It's not bad, but I wouldn't call it my best question
I agree, but it had an answer, and without an answer there is a zero multiplier, which in my opinion keeps the really intriguing questions from that list way to often
The idea of HNQs is to have an interesting set of questions/answers though
It would be boring to read a question with no answer
Although more useful to us as a site
If it stays on long enough you might earn a Popular Question
It should stay on for at least 6 or 7 hours now
18:20
Unless there are a few medium voted answers to one of the other two questions, yeah
That seems to have gone well
It's weird seeing one question with 226 views and then another with 16
It's even weirder for that 16 view question to have more votes :D
The IOT.SE site is on the stackexchange.com list! :)
The view counter is nowhere near accurate though now
Why is Ask Patents up there?
18:26
No idea
I think it's a bug
The site never went through Area 51, so the age might not be recorded
On the other hand, the site is also dying a painful death
My question is now officially the most viewed on the site
Phew
And yet not many people are actually joining because of it
@Aurora0001 enjoy your fame while it lasts, oh Mighty
It shall continue forever
18:50
Hello Public ones!
Do you have any favourite WiFi modules? I am planning to get some.
hm logitech just said I have to mail their tech team
High Priority Customer Trouble Report is going to be born.
I mean I didn't expect them to retweet the security hole, but they could've notified their team on their own...
They should have a ticket system up which could receive and route such report directly to the relevant unit inside the company.
Short feedback loop from the customer is important.
I am so smart because I just had a boring workshop at work today.
@Aurora0001 33 HP in the HNQ.
19:05
This site loading for anyone? support.logitech.com/de/contact
@BenceKaulics as in ESP8266?
@Helmar Loads for me.
@Ghanima Such as.
I have only those
@anonymous2 damn
19:07
Wait.
you got redirected to another country version?
and the comfortably sit behind a stack of stupid other things
hm, that loads for me too
@Ghanima That is the one I hear from everywhere. Wonder if there are some not that well known, but good stuff.
19:08
don't go for the not-so-well known stuff if avoidable
I once had a biffer-board (poor man's Raspberry Pi, kindof), all but trouble
I have found this though.
give it a shot and write many Q's about it ;)
@Helmar Looks like they don't have German support anymore, check out support.logitech.com/en_us/change-location
Sorry, try now.
I hate them already, their support, their twitter response, their security concept...
@Ghanima I want to build some WiFi enabled sensor node in the near future, I will definitely post some Q's.
19:14
lucky me, my remote Pi (with 624 days uptime) just gave out on me
I won't have much time in the upcoming two weeks to participate though. :(
Say, got a question for a few of you experts: Do you feel that questions about antiquated IoT devices or products which were well known in their time are on-topic on this site?
I think that would be fine.
Internet enabled cannons and guillotines?
19:20
I would welcome some diversity in the products the questions are about.
Sounds like IoT to me
Okay, it's up.
Thanks for the input. :)

Another Necromancer badge for community ads.
We need one more on Home Improvement.SE
Already voted
The pic is outdated though
@Helmar Thought so and indeed outdated.
Let me check.
Fiexed.
I know it was correctly updated on EE.SE, seems I have forgot to change the link on Home Improvement.
19:55
I think it is fine. They should handle this issue more effectively.
Based on your question it seems pretty serious to me.
My guess is that those social media guys didn't bother to follow the link
@Helmar see if you can get someone popular to pick up the issue, like a security blogger
Possibly.
Yep and make sure that the SE link is always there just as you did on Twitter.
Yeah, but I'm a twitter noob
I remeber when someone wiped out a complete company server park and asked on ServerFault how to restore the data.
3
19:58
I always have an account for half a year, then delete it annoyed and reregister again after a few months
Server Fault was everywhere in those articles.
So two questions #1 which security blogger to pick, #2 how to properly tweet at the guy
I have never used Twitter.
20:15
Oh right, my edits are put in a queue now. :)
@anonymous2 not any more
@Aurora0001 :)
Thank you!
Is it just me, or is this question not showing on the questions list?
It's literally invisible to me - it won't show up at all, anywhere
The only way I can get to it is through the 2k tools
@Aurora0001 Just wait 10 minutes or so.
It's normal; the questions appear in various places at various times.
Usually the question list is one of the last places for it to appear.
The new questions queue is usually quicker than 20 minutes though
20:24
But char feed pops it up at once ^^
@Aurora0001 20 minutes does seem a bit long.
It's as if the site is blocking me from seeing it
I wonder if a quality filter has caught it?
If you refresh the new questions page say 5 times in a row, does it show up?
I see it in the active question feed.
I know at least on SO if the quality score is too low, it gets hidden from the homepage
@BenceKaulics Ah, it's showing up for me there too
20:25
@Aurora0001 Never seen that on a low ranking site, though.
Still not in the question list though
@anonymous2 I don't think it happens on other sites, only SO, to be honest
I had the same problem with my harmony question for about 5 minutes
No measure of hard source reload would resolve it
It happened to me with another question today, but I've seen it on so many different sites that I didn't time how long it stayed out of the New Questions List.
Question rate is on 2.9 now woohoo.
I'm pretty sure the site is hiding it from me - if I open an incognito tab it shows
Ah, it's showing now
Very slow to enter the question list - it took 24 minutes!
20:47
@Helmar what do you think about this answer? iot.stackexchange.com/questions/593/…
It's come up in the Low Quality queue, but I don't really think it's that bad
It's a bit of everything, not delete-worthy though in my mind
I agree, it's a useful perspective in my opinion
Grrr
You need at least 1k reputation to review low quality posts.
Aurora0001 reviewed this 1 min ago: Looks OK
@Ghanima Earn yourself some rep then!
Or take the cheat option and get selected as a pro tem mod
trying...
I just need to convince CM that you and helmar serve the site better as high-rep users
20:56
Right.. time to bounty away all my rep!
Beat that, @Ghanima
it works ;)
muwah-ha-ha
My question will soon be double the next highest viewed question
We seem to be slowly gaining users though, don't know if my HNQ helped in any way
@Aurora0001 I do think it helps, especially long term.
it probably did, oh Mighty Madnificence
