Anyways I'd say we could activate it for the start.
Phew mortarboard

@Helmar Do you mean a Ticker Feed?

wow the site is really plagued with questions that are too broad
it seems everyone wants to ask questions that cover a broad topic all at once
that's not good
questions should be about specific problems, especially during the private beta

Post like these: iot.stackexchange.com/questions/131/… Are just asking for too much info.

Q: The Real Essential Questions of Every Beta

AsheeshRThe blog post Seven Essential Meta Questions of Every Beta gets linked to prominently from every beta's meta. However, this blog post is somewhat inaccurate and misdirects new users. In almost every beta, the site design question, for example, gets asked and undergoes a fair bit of discussion eve...

^^^^ Everybody please read this
It represents experience from the couple of hundred betas of Stack Exchange sites that have already taken place

12:47 AM
@HenryWHHackv2.0 In regards to the linked post, I was asking if I should edit it to drill down specifically to ZigBee and Z-Wave, similarly to the question about WiFi vs Bluetooth

@tbm0115 Most importantly, you should narrow it down to a particular type of device or environment.
‘Do some signals work better long-range and some better in "noisy" environments?’ is a decent question on its own, already a bit on the broad side.

Okay, I'll edit it once I get home

1:47 AM
@goobering Welcome! :)

@HenryWHHackv2.0 Howdo.

It's Howdy.
I think.

Depends if you're in Glasgow or Texas I suppose.
Just getting the lay of the land! Interesting, if pretty hand wavey, questions popping up on the main board.

2:05 AM
I wonder why this room took so long to be created?
@Videonauth What's your review on the site?
I meant: What do you think about the site?

Q: I would like to propose a tag for Philips Hue

texnicFinally we've got a chance to have a site for this long-standing out of scope topic! Thanks guys! I would like to propose the creation of a "philips-hue" tag. While it's a very specific vendor-related tag, there are many Hug devices in the world, so probably many visitors will benefit from it.

Q: Wi-Fi vs. Wireless Tags

HelmarWhile wireless and Wi-Fi do not mean the same (one could reasonably consider wireless as a hypernym of Wi-Fi), they are often used as synonyms. This poses a certain problem for our emerging taxonomy. Either we edit posts tagged with either with prejudice and make sure the tag wifi is only used f...

9:14 AM
@Helmar , you around
?

@Gilles yeah, you're right. And even more so people are reluctant to VTC them. There are questions posted yesterday that have collected just two or three votes to close.

@Gilles, @Ghanima yep, too many questions on security, communication which are too broad.
Atleast they should try to point the problem that they are facing instead of asking how to architect a complete system overall.

9:39 AM
@bravokeyl then I guess more comments are in order for those who did not join chat.

yep

10:04 AM
@bravokeyl now I am

I posted my opinion wifi and wireless tags on meta

@bravokeyl I saw it
Technically I completely agree.
The problem is that in my experience people tend to use wifi colloquially for all things wireless

Yep, you are correct, but there is hope to get differentiation as these techonolgy usage emerges.
BTW Do we need personal-project tag
?

Q: When is it acceptable to copy edit a tag wiki excerpt and description from other SE site?

Bence KaulicsSo there is this initiative about Keeping tags clean from start. I think this includes adding tag descriptions and excerpts as soon as possible. There will be tags, there are tags which are already presented on other SE site. So in what circumstances should someone copy edit this tag informatio...

@Helmar thanks for the nice meta post on the issue

10:17 AM
@bravokeyl No, we don't in my view.

@bravokeyl not really, I'd say

Got it.

10:38 AM
Btw who is approving tag wikis right now? SE Staff?
seems awfully broad
Also, we should make alexa an synonym of amazon-echo

@Helmar I have the feeling that they are not approved but just come into existance
@Helmar ah meh, we can't :(

@Ghanima Yeah, no rep, no voters, so just via meta and mod (SE) support

@Helmar yes, SE staff, I see that if they are approving it based on the wikipedia definition or just considering defs which are not entirely wrong.
Anyways tag wiki or guidances always need iterations
I suggested coap yesterday and it's approved, I feel that it's just a wikipedia or origin web definition to it.

10:54 AM
@bravokeyl ok, I stand corrected

Q: You have the power. Use your close votes!

HelmarWe already have post regarding regular votes (Vote Early, Vote Often (Seriously)), but I want to cast a special light on close votes. Private beta is about making the scope of the site more clear. Thus, trying to close questions you think are not a good fit is essential. Don't hesitate to vote t...

2

@bravokeyl Of course they do. I only suggest a few excerpts now. The full wikis have to grow. They are also not as important as the excerpts due to their lower visibility

11:13 AM
Why can't we edit meta posts? I can do it on ELU.meta, why not here?
Is it a private beta thing?

I think it's a beta thing.
Korean SE is on public beta and it doesn't allow edits on meta site too.

That's annoying not to be able to even tag edit meta stuff.
@Ghanima can you add the tag "chat" to your chat room name question?

11:31 AM
@Helmar done

Q: Essential questions #4: site elevator pitch / tag line

HelmarAccording to The Real Essential Questions of Every Beta one of the essential questions private beta is to establish our tag line. This site's elevator pitch. I will not include a suggestion in the question itself but just ask everyone who has an idea to post an answer that can be voted on.

11:53 AM
So the name was decided?

This is the default name for the room.
;)

@MarkYisri no not really, this room "just appeared"

@Ghanima That was suppose to happen but it took long to do so.

yepp, but we could still have it our way

I know a mod can change the name of the room and customize it.

12:04 PM
but there's no concensus on another name yet, or maybe meta is not that active yet. No need to rush things

User number 777 is the lucky user (Because in the Linux world 777 means full privileged) LOL!
We have the 222 user now.

Q: Serious problem with chat

Mark YisriI opened a gallery room to look at it, and this is what the request access banner looks like: I don't think that's supposed to happen. You have to select the text just to see it.

12:44 PM
@Helmar It's a matter of reputation. You need to have the edit privilege, there are no suggested edits on meta.

Ah!

I already knew this but: Why?

@HenryWHHackv2.0 because the SE developers didn't consider it useful

I'm sure it's been discussed on Meta Stack Exchange

12:53 PM
Where is this guy:
When you need him.
@IoTmeta I wonder who VTC that post?
There are may things to look forward to:
Our first 10k user
Our first post with 100 upvotes
Our first Diamond Moderator
Our first year
Our first Spam
Our first Troll
Our first Suspended User
and etc.

@HenryWHHackv2.0 we could speed up that suspension thing, if you insist
;)

I think spam will be the winner here

Q: Are "how do I build X?" questions on-topic?

Aurora0001A few recent questions have asked about how a specific IoT device should be constructed, like so: How could I create an LPG indicator? It's almost certain that these questions will be too broad, but it's worth considering whether these are actually on-topic at all - are these questions real...

Q: Protocol comparisions

HelmarWe currently have two questions that are essentially asking for protocol comparisons. One is already closed and fails to garner reopen votes even after a edits, the other stands at three close votes. Difference Between ZigBee and Z-Wave? When to use Wi-Fi over Bluetooth or vice versa in an IoT ...

The tag is useless, isn't it?

@Helmar sounds way to generic to be of any use

Oh I was looking for you @Ghanima can you change this to site-scope, even if it's closed. meta.iot.stackexchange.com/questions/35/…
2

@Helmar done

@Ghanima thx
Is it ok to post questions where I already know the answer when we are in beta?
On the one hand I'm essentially letting people research what I already know, on the other hand the question might be a good fit.

8:56 PM
@Helmar answering your own question is ok on other SE sites, so I assume there's no problem doing it

@Helmar I'm a nobody, but I would say absolutely! Asking the question and answering yourself, provided you are creating quality material, is definitely valid.
@Aurora0001 FGITW. :)

@anonymous2 shame I never get a chance to do that on most questions I plan to answer... always beaten by 2 or 3 minutes!

@Aurora0001 Lol, know the feeling... <groans>

@Helmar self answers are always ok on SE (so I would think)
@Aurora0001 multiple answers are also fine (actually wanted that is)

@Helmar, Third time pays for all. You've got three votes for.

8:59 PM
@Ghanima the trouble is what I've written is pretty much a duplicate of what someone else writes (at least on SO where I usually answer) so 2 identical posts are just a waste

Q: What is FGITW and SCITE?

Alex AngasI only read Meta every so often but I've seen lots of talk about SCITE and FGITW. I have no idea what these are! Can someone please define and explain these abbreviations?

Considering the current community size that's a ringing endorsement :)

@Helmar Yes, sir!

@Aurora0001 yeah, that's true
I am slow in answering too, so I know the feeling

And as soon as I get online, eager to post some answers... no-one posts any questions on IoT
I might try and come up with some questions to create a bit of activity

9:01 PM
@Aurora0001 yeah, questions died down quite fast
which is probably not a good thing in private beta

nope, but there are a few people who seem to keep coming back which is a good sign

@Ghanima We also shot down a lot. Sensibly and rightly so, but we closed 20 out of 46

@Aurora0001 Yep.
@Helmar Yep.

That's English.SE levels in certificate season
Where all sorts of learners stumble in right before the exams

I wonder if there are any stats on how many questions get closed in other private betas
would be interesting to see if IoT questions are particularly bad
or whether we're just grumpy and close a lot

9:04 PM
We are in private beta, invite only by committed users. Users who saw the examples they committed on. I expected better questions to be honest.

@Helmar absolutely, you would expect that Stack Exchange users would know if their question is incredibly broad and tweak it
2
but apparently not

Lol, that's why I haven't posted any questions.
Say, anyone have any idea where a chap could get a base in IoT? I'd love to be contributing things on the questions and answers level because I love the principle, but I have so little RL experience that I can't... :(
2

@anonymous2 in the same boat here; I'm really interested but I don't actually have all that much knowledge on the subject

@Helmar btw and wrt to ELU, how difficult is it with all the Muricans discussing about what English is right and which is not ;)
@Aurora0001 I wouldn't worry too much, it's us defining the scope of the site

@Ghanima fair point, let's just make sure we leave something that is on-topic!

9:10 PM
@Aurora0001 yeah, we better figure that out soon ;)
@anonymous2 and again I know the feeling

@Ghanima Oh that's a clash almost every enthusiastic newcomer to that site has at some point. The realization that there are actually several variations of English.
I find that the Murians are not the problem, as always it's the most opinionated people that start the problems. That's a universal characteristic people all over the globe have :D

Also, anyone know if the minimum rep for privileges will go up when we exit the private beta?

@Aurora0001 Yes, sir.

On other beta sites it looks like close votes are 500 rep minimum, so will anyone who fails to reach that before the end just lose the privilege?

@Aurora0001 Yes sir, again.

9:17 PM
@anonymous2 I'll post a question of which I at least know how and where to get the answer. You can have a look at it and you can dive in if you want to. It's related of a previous project of mine and has a very approachable setting.

@Aurora0001 I did, but I forgot

If so, I'd better get earning some rep!

@Aurora0001 Me too... boo hoo... :)

@Aurora0001 yep, and even worse is the jump from beta to graduated

that's 500 to 3k right?

9:18 PM
@Aurora0001 On graduation?

@anonymous2 yeah

@Aurora0001 Right again, then.

@anonymous2 well, bye bye privileges then for me!

@Aurora0001 Nonsense. Graduation is far enough away that you have time to build up the rep. Max rep for a day is 200; 3000 / 200 = 15... ;-)

@anonymous2 that's if you can answer/ask enough questions!

9:22 PM
@Aurora0001 Yes, that's an issue...

I sadly lack the expertise for a lot of the questions
Also do you think a question like "How can I tell if my IoT devices are infected with the Mirai worm?" would be good or perhaps too much of a duplicate of this?

@Aurora0001 I'll let others share their opinions, but personally, I think duplicates are not a bad thing at this point in time. They produce more good content, they give more demonstrations of what a good question should look like, etc. What we need to be watching out for is questions that demonstrate a less than professional quality and questions that will be out of scope.

@Aurora0001 I think it would be a lot better.
A known worm can be addressed more specifically than just rogue device

Thanks for your opinions; I'll formulate it tomorrow and post (don't really have time now)

Finally a couple things starred that have something other than two stars. ;)
Meaning, before, it seemed anything that was starred was doomed to have exactly two stars. :)
Not that it matters. :)

Q: What capabilities does my Home Connect appliance provides in the developer SDK?

HelmarThe smart household appliances that can be controlled via Home Connect can also be accessed via a developer SDK provided by the Home Connect Service provider. How do I find out what I will be able to do with a prospective oven, e.g. a Siemens iQ700 CM678G4S6B, by using the SDK provided by the dev...

@anonymous2 thanks, now I have to go about star/unstar things to get things in order again

@Ghanima Oh dear. Shouldn't have said anything. Stuck my foot in my mouth again... <argh...>

Hm, there are still 80 reputation to be gained today

@anonymous2 fun fact 47% of SE users show symptoms of OCD

Q: Is there a way to turn on large numbers of IoT devices remotely?

AstroDanI have a lot of IoT devices that I am currently working on (read playing with). One of my biggest headaches is turning on the ones I need without climbing under my desk and plugging in a lot of wires. I looked at IoT controlled power switches but that is going to get very expensive very fast for ...

Those tags are all mediocre at best
hardware is completely useless in my opinion, power can mean anything and design seems only be related in an arbitrary way

9:47 PM
@Helmar, it looks like the SDK is still in beta and you can't actually use it yet... is that possible?

@anonymous2 No
I just registered

>Please note as we are still in a beta phase, at the moment you can only download the SDK and test it with our home appliance simulators. It is not yet possible to connect it to real Home Connect appliances. While we are more than happy to get your first feedback, we are working with full speed to launch a fully-fledged SDK shortly that connects with real Home Connect appliances.

@anonymous2 Crap, they delayed it then.
It was supposed to be live a while ago.

@Helmar The article could be outdated.

@anonymous2 hm, I still have connections. I'll look into that.

10:05 PM
Those questions are all about network security
I'm not quite sure that's a good use of a networking tag.

@Helmar I think that's about as good as I'm going to be able to fire out...
Read all the way through and see if you agree before upvoting, please. :)

@anonymous2 I just did :)

Lol. You read fast... :)

@anonymous2 I got pinged when you answered there ;)

@Helmar Naturally. :)

10:16 PM
I also played with the simulator a bit already :)

@Helmar How does it work?
I mean, do you like it?

The simulator is very basic
I just registered with 10 minute mail and you get sliders and buttons for the possible remote operations
I think it gives quite a good impression from user perspective, from a developer perspective I'm not sure, but I'm not a developer ;)

Q: Should these tags be plural?

HelmarWe currently have the tags protocol and beacon but the tag standards, sensors, kitchen-appliances and over-the-air-updates. That's inconsistent. All those are either general concepts which have clearly defined elements like protocols (HTTPS) and standards (802.11x) or are very much countable like...

Somehow this in chat feed is weird

@Helmar Oh?

This way I could actually star my own posts when the bot posts them.

Meta posts, yes, but you're not getting any rep off of them.

@anonymous2 True enough, I guess than it's not as weird as I just thought

11:04 PM
@Helmar It does seem kind of counterintuitive, and I guess someone could abuse the system to get more attention on their meta post, but the whole goal of feeding them to chat is to get more attention to meta in general, so no major harm can really be done.

@anonymous2 Yeah, you're right

@Helmar Want me to star it? ;-)

@anonymous2 Nah
The complete flood of meta posts stopped anyways so it's on top anyways
Can I retract a reopen vote?

as far as i know no, you cant, but that post anyways goes through the review que

Q: Ability to retract reopen/delete votes

amanaP lanaC A nalP A naM AIt seems that now we can retract close votes but we cannot retract reopen votes or delete votes. I am trying to retract my reopen vote here but it does not allow me to. Can we have that ability?

It's not tagged status-completed, so we can assume that you can't for the moment. You can pile on an upvote, comment or answer if you think it should be implemented, though.

11:14 PM
@anonymous2 I up voted, though it didn't look high priority considering the age

No, you're right. When the Third Iteration of the Stack Exchange Quality Project comes around (sorry, you'll have to wait a year), it would be an option to bring it up then.
