I wrote an Alexa skill in Python to tell a random joke from Reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/Python/comments/5imyix/i_wrote_an_alexa_skill_in_python_to_tell_a_random/

Nice
And only about 100 lines of code
Or more like 20 without all the spacing

yea thought this might be intresting to you guys :)

I already registered on the dev portal a few days ago

Meh, the community promotion I did on ELU a while back stands on +1/-1 :/

have a link?
;)
the users over there have probably a hard time understanding why

Yeah, literature got a better feedback :)

do you have the "source" I can't edit over there

Although I guess you can switch the link to area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/94224?phase=beta
[2], [1] is the auto-updating picture

right
thankss
I'll post it at RPi

11:48 AM
What disappoints me that on Electrical Engineering my IoT ad promotion has 0/0.

not that it helps much now, but this way I'll keep it in mind when we do it again next year

0/0 on EE is surprising indeed
I mean I knew that ELU was not exactly the perfect target audience :)
2
Also there is a reason to include ELU experts in Alexa questions

@BenceKaulics you could change the image if you like, now that we're in beta not commitment anymore

Yeah
I was just about to say that
Use the link I provided above under [1], that auto-updates

I wonder why this worked for you
for me it said it need to be at imgur

11:55 AM
Oh yeah, I forgot
It has to be the first time
You can edit afterwards
So put any image in there 1st and then switch to the other one

yeah, I tried that
works, just as you say

hm, lifehacks literally has no community ad whatsoever

I have updated it.

Perfect. Also bumps it up to top again :)
Anyone active in lifehacks
I don't really want to post community ad with my association bonus alone

today's key issue however is: no questions
@Helmar nope but I can offer WB and SFF ;)

12:00 PM
@Ghanima Well, they could be interested in the more futuristic applications of IoT
WB recently calculated how many elves one would need with an Industry 4.0 present factory

*Is R2D2 an IoT device?* for SFF
*Evil villain taking over the world - how to use IoT to this end?* for WB

Pros and cons of using ZigBee in my doomsday device?

Security issues of doomsday device's remote control.

@BenceKaulics up'd

12:05 PM
You have earned me a revival badge on meta EE.SE :D
2
I gonna update my meta answer here about promoting ourself around SE.

@BenceKaulics Community Ads are for earning those revival/necromancer badges :)
Never post before June ;)
@BenceKaulics Oh good, include the links to those community ads

Updated.

A: Where can we get more Subject Matter Experts?

Bence KaulicsOne way would be to advertise ourself over StackExchange that possibly has some users interested in IoT. For example: Raspberry Pi SE: as Raspberry Pi is a well-known device which can be used in wide variety of applications. Arduino SE: as Arudino give a fast way of prototype making, so many re...

Also you can post your Ads as well.

I'm pinning mine because links only are quite strange in the star board

How can I pin it mine?

You can't

12:12 PM
Thought so.

Someone made me room owner

but we shouldn't pin both

You're right
Then I'll keep the one with the preamble

yepp

Sure.
The time has come for me to create a RaspPi user account.

12:20 PM
My network profile reputation tab doesn't show IoT, but it's already in the network flair
Consistency 4tw

Mine too, but just the IoT icon, the badges are not summed.

12:51 PM
Area51 says 464 total users. My profile says ~1k people reached.

If you have 10 answers and if I have checked all of them then I count as 10, I suppose.

@Helmar ;)

@Helmar I think that number is based off of ip hits, but I could be mistaken.

It just summs up the question view counters.

@BenceKaulics Okay, a bit of research, here's what I found.
97
A: How are the number of views in a question calculated?

user136634I've recently investigated the functioning of the Stack Overflow views counter because I wanted to implement something similar (which I did). My ramblings on the matter are here: Dissecting the Stack Overflow views counter So, how that thing works? Quite simply, as I turned out to be. Every que...

Q: We're working on a new stat to help convey the reach of your posts here

JaydlesWe've got a new statistic on the shiny new Profile Page Prototype. It's not perfect yet. And we did a pretty crap job of explaining what it's all about! Let's talk. What you do here isn't just about solving one person's problem. A while back, a user contacted us about his friend's account. His...

Bottom line:
For authenticated users, it only counts once.

1:03 PM
hey, guys, we need Qs on the main site and this is what you research ;)

For non-authenticated users it counts for every IP hit.
@Ghanima Sorry, we'll try to be good...

@anonymous2 But it's private beta, who are these unauthenticated users

@Helmar Exactly what I was wondering.

I also researched the possibilities of giving alexa phonetic input and defining parts of speech for the voice output.

1:41 PM
From an icognito:
Aww... :::(((
Maybe an outdated statistic.

It said 14 start of the week iirc

2:35 PM
Interesting white paper about Designing Sensors into Battery-Powered IoT Nodes
If anyone interested.

how long until ransomware comes to thermostats? https://t.co/cL17lQnqwB

4:18 PM
@anonymous2 private betas are at least 3 weeks apparently
nothing we can do to change that
Also I think I found a SE bug

@Aurora0001 Out with it!
@Aurora0001 Too bad!

If I go to upvote those community ad answers on other sites where I don't have a meta account and I click 'join this site', the /openidconnect route 404s for some reason

Hmm, where did you find the links? I remember seeing them, I've just forgotten where...

@Aurora0001 Just tried and didn't have any issues on SuperUser.com.
Can't believe I didn't have an account on there... :)

4:22 PM
@anonymous2 follow these steps exactly
go to this question:

Q: The fine line between 3d and CAD

StarWindI have noticed that we are getting a lot of questions like this one Which really are CAD / Mech engineering questions. I will note this person needed several rewrites of his question. Though I am not sure asking for Hollywood 007 scifi computer automagic is focused enough for the group... we can...

Click on the button there

Sorry, worked for me. How are you signed in? (Google, SE, openID, etc.)

Oh, ok, it didn't work, you're right. :)
Looks like a bug... If you post on Meta, I'll support.

4:24 PM
Did not worked for me on RPI.se using google

Probably worth putting directly on meta.SE.

Will do, just going to do some further testing first
Only occurs on meta

Two more votes on EE.SE and on super user to go live.

If everyone in this room votes we'll get enough votes

By the way, if someone check the Ad and wants to join. How can she/he request an invitation?
2

4:27 PM
@BenceKaulics Is it linked in the IoT meta post?

@BenceKaulics don't need to - if you go to area 51 and click 'visit' you can join without an invite

Oh, I've already upvoted.

Also @anonymous2:

Oh thats great.

4:29 PM
Seems like it's

@Aurora, something like.

@anonymous2 I'm honestly really confused why anyone would say that question you posted was 'opinion-based'

@Aurora0001 Not sure. :)
Thanks for the comment. Upvoted.

One of the paradoxes of SE I suppose
just like 'too localized' questions being closed as 'too broad'

In any case it's out of the queues. @bravokeyl, @Helmar, and @Ghanima voted to leave open, so unless three more people happen along that feel especially like closing it, I think it will stay there.
At least, I think those were the three...
:)

4:39 PM
@anonymous2 yeah, they were (Aurora sees everything)

@Aurora0001 Lol.

Already two users with secret powers.

@BenceKaulics Mod tools? Doesn't make you anything like a mod.

Helmar also has super-synonym powers (which are currently absolutely useless)
@anonymous2 well, it does in the way that you can disapprovingly view other people's actions :P

@anonymous2 They received the Eyes that See You.

4:42 PM
@Aurora0001 Lol. Yes, the one thing I do like about them is seeing deleted posts.
Sometimes, that is.

You aren't missing out on anything interesting :P

The thing I don't like about them is this:
0
Q: See count of votes on questions vs. answers

anonymous2I recently asked this question to determine whether it is possible to get a count of the number of my upvotes that are on questions vs. answers (or at least a percentage). I am proposing that under the vote tabs all, upvote, downvote, etc, there be another list of tabs that would split the votes...

Didn't go anywhere, though.
Argh, got the wrong post. Just a sec.
Take away that vote, that was the wrong one... :|

You can have it anyway

Oh... thanks. <gulp>
That's the real one.

To be fair I never look at the count that much anyway

4:46 PM
I got an answer, though, so that was fine.
@Aurora0001 On sites this small, me neither. It's when there are 10 answers that I notice.
But sometimes 6 are deleted answers. It doesn't really make any serious difference, it would just be so easy to implement that I thought I would suggest it all the same.

5:05 PM
Time for another scope-testing question

Q: Is the Amazon Echo 'always listening' and sending data to the cloud?

Aurora0001Several news sources such as Intellihub and CEPro seem to suggest that Amazon's Echo home assistant constantly listens to conversations and sends them via the Internet to Amazon's servers. CEPro states that: By saying a key phrase Amazon calls a “wake word” the Echo comes to life and begins l...

5:38 PM
That's two questions right there in the title ;)

I can always break it into 6 mini-questions if you prefer :P
6x the rep for you!

:D

To be honest that Intellihub site is dreadful
the front page headline is this:
"Obama’s birth certificate proven a forgery"

oh boy

Still, I bet a lot of people will search for that sort of thing, so having an IoT link on top would be great

5:43 PM
So, I want to use this alexba.in/blog/2013/06/08/… to make my future Pi able to infrared command the shit out of tv and stuff and then use Alexa to order the Pi around
But that seems to be like a corner too much
But HiFi and TV are still kinda dumb in my case

Sounds like the easiest option then
Still, like most IoT at the moment, it's a bit of a Rube Goldberg machine-type design

Yeah, easiest option. Buy Raspberry Pi, manually solder together an IR transceiver, manually decode the the IR codes and the write an Alexa skill to call up the Pi.
:D
@Aurora0001 Self-Operating :)

Your Alexa records your voice, sends it across the Internet, processes it on a server hundreds of miles away, sends a signal back to your Pi which fires an infrared ray which hits the TV receiver which decodes the signal and then changes the channel
All to avoid a button

Well, I intend to call scripts on the Pi
Like "Alexa Cinema Mode deluxe via Pi"
And then the dolby system and the tv spring to live
I saw there's also zwave and zigbee modules for Pi
So potentially I can fake it as SmartHome device as well, then I could skip the skill

That's true, might be easier to do that instead

5:52 PM
@Aurora0001 to find out if alexa send permanently data you could hook it up on a computer and monitor it with wireshark
that would the only option to really find out if it only sends on the call word or permanently

@Videonauth that's an interesting idea - are the transmissions encrypted though?

doesnt matter you still could pinpoint the source of the network packages to one particular device

@Aurora0001 Doesn't matter, it's not supposed to send anything without code word

@Helmar what about updates etc?

you would not be able to see what it is transmitting but if it transmits and when

5:53 PM
I mean I doubt they'd be frequent
Would be good to check though, yeah
Thanks for the idea @Videonauth

np you're welcome

6:06 PM
Gotta go, made my wondering a question though
See ya

Bye!

6:28 PM
This is quite interesting:
I suspect that spike on December 12th is from my Reddit post

6:40 PM
Yep!

It's a shame we don't get the more detailed demographics though

Not enough data :P
I think those will be up in 10 more days

Yeah, hopefully we'll get a boost when we go into public beta
