Q: How fast should I be accepting an answer?

GhanimaI have noticed that the more prolific users of this site tend to accept the first answer to their question quite fast. Now there is obviously nothing wrong in accepting any good and thourough answers that address the question properly and solve the issue at hand. It encourages the user who gave s...

1:35 AM
Hi all!

2:22 AM
Hello
I'm only an hour or two late

6 hours later…
8:28 AM
Hello!

When are we expected to enter public beta?

@BenceKaulics other users came up with an calculation based on typical durations of private beta that would place transistion near Dec. 26th

Thanks for the information.
That is a bit far.

but we will see if they really pick public holydays for the transition

I doubt they will. Launching of private beta was delayed by Thanksgiving as well.

yeah, so do I

4 hours later…
12:49 PM
Morning, all.

:)

yea, "morning"
where are you from? Hawaii?

@Ghanima Canada, actually. It's late morning, but morning all the same... :) about 8am.

so is that more to the east or western coast?
I am unable to calculate the time difference now
;)

@Ghanima Middle

12:54 PM
picturing Canada with my inner eye, that sounds like in the middle of a huge forrest

Yes, I guess it would be afternoon where you are...

2pm

@Ghanima Lol, that's about the size of it.
Say, @Ghanima, what do you think of this:
Why the upvotes for someone who can't be bothered to Google? The information requested is easily discoverable at the company's site mylively.com or by Googling for reviews, such as yahoo.com/tech/… If I had enough rep to vote to close, I would. This sort of question does not help our site at all — Mawg 3 hours ago
Obviously user doesn't know that he can VTC, but my point is, should I really not have posted just because the information is available on Google?

@anonymous2 where is this from

Q: What does the Lively Medical Alert Watch Monitor?

anonymous2According to MakeUseOf.com, the Lively Medical Alert Watch... ...allows remote health monitoring of your loved ones. The smartwatch can track steps taken as well as other kinds of daily activities, plus it provides an emergency assist button that alerts Lively to call in and check that everyt...

12:56 PM
oh, so it's a personal matter

Enough Rep? I think everyone can VTC
as of now
or am I missing something here.

@Ghanima Lol, that's why I'm asking.
Because if someone should do something about it, I should. :)

@bravokeyl no, you don't

hmm!

@bravokeyl 1 rep to VTC.
But the real question is, Are these questions unwelcome? Should I simply not post?

1:01 PM
Well, we can't decide on one person's comment

@anonymous2 I would still go with "let community decide"

Actually I'm one of them who upvoted that question.

@bravokeyl Gfy! ;)

shouldn't that read "gfm"?

@Ghanima IMLO, yes. IMHO, no.

1:04 PM
so the "accusation" is that of a lack of research, how do you plead?

@Ghanima Guilty.

I'm so bad at slang, I have to google what GFM is? :facepalm:

Good for me, I assume.

Ah!

I googled IMLO and that showed up that the L is for "lesbian"

1:07 PM
NO!
Lofty

that's not what The Internet said

Oh, no... that's what comes from making up acronyms...
Oh dear, I think I'll have to flag for mod removal...
The other question that comment raised was, If the question is really so easy to answer, why hasn't anyone done so yet?

we would you force the issue

@Ghanima Oh, I'm sure the answers are coming, that's not what I mean.
It's just really easy questions usually seem to get an answer within the first few hours.
Thanks, @bravokeyl. :)

probably it is just offputtingly easy or something

1:12 PM
@anonymous2 The link, given by him, did it help you?
2

1:22 PM
@bravokeyl Sort of but not really. It gave a kind of general answer, but it didn't answer the specific question.

That's what I thought, in that case, I would like you to make constructive comment and edit the original question stating the same(this is my opinion, do as you please)
2

@bravokeyl Comment's already there; working on edit. :)

great!

If someone is interested in a free Python course on udemy: here you can enroll: learn.codequs.com/p/BJm_zYyVl/…
(disclaimer: im in no way afilliated, just posting this to spread the word)

Looks neat!

1:29 PM
found this today via twitter and thought well i enroll , but sharing this is even more great

@Videonauth :)

hey ho

hey ho

1:44 PM
hey (yo) oh red chili peppers :P

Crowded! :)

Quite so.

But not much activity on site today!

We come back above 10 question per day. So much win with this 10.1 after the 9.8.
2

But the views dropped again

1:47 PM
@BenceKaulics but some questions might now get shot down for being to easy

Can a private beta be closed because of the low view rate? I mean we still have limited number of users.

I would make an unoriginal harambe joke, but, I'm afraid it would get shot down.

Dropping to double-digit wouldn't be too swell

@Ghanima Possibly.

I guess the powers that be can decide however they want.
It's not like SE is contractually bound to do anything

1:49 PM
@BenceKaulics to us that doesn't make much sense, hu? after all private beta would not show up on search engines, so it's quite a not-so-useful indicator

There are some new contributor though. Like iot.stackexchange.com/users/428/lynx0123 already with four answer. Hopefully there will be some questions as well.

@BenceKaulics ... and 90% answered, boy, we're winners here

I think besides answer ratio and views per day we look quite fine.
Not too sure about meta participation

@Ghanima Makes me feel better, nothing else.

Robert's active and approving tag wikis :)
Now he just has to press the go public button

1:53 PM
:D

Eh, Bence, what did you do with that edit and the rollback and the edit?

That was just a dishonest and selfish act of mine.

:D
Gotcha

@Helmar good point

Yes you did. Good to see that you are using your new powers.

2:02 PM
I didn't, I randomly looked at the Badges page and wondered who did the second rollback

Q: Easy questions - or: Are there questions just too simple for this site?

GhanimaOver this question What does the Lively Medical Alert Watch Monitor? (prior to any edits) the following issue has been risen: Why the upvotes for someone who can't be bothered to Google? The information requested is easily discoverable at the company's site mylively.com or by Googling for rev...

Original powers then.

Exactly :)

it really is depressing not being able to edit on meta

@Ghanima Don't know what you're talking about :D

2:06 PM
yeah, figured that much
know what, I am going to do the dishes now, turns out I have privileges enough to do so!

2:19 PM
Do we need tags differentiating between standards and regulations?

When I created regulations it got deleted and changed to standards by an edit.
I agreed with that so IMO we do not need both of them.
Maybe we can ask Robert to create a synonyme. He has just created one.

2:36 PM
hm, maybe ask meta first
A standard is more of a guideline or best-practice while regulations are actually legally binding.

That is true.

3:22 PM

hats?

Hats!
Winter bash...

3:36 PM
Yay, unanswered down by 2, 7 to go

but you're making those answers just up ;)

Evoco responso, hex hex

you really need to leave some answers to the other kids

Will there be meta discusson about regulations vs standards?

@Ghanima The other kids have to ask more questions
Also, Aurora had more reputation, that couldn't stand ;)

3:50 PM
@Helmar true and fair enough

@Helmar we'll see about that...

Maybe you could balance your question and answer numbers. ^^

@BenceKaulics I'll take a look and see which questions I may be able to answer

Or wait for Helmar to ask some new.

There's a lot of Aurora asking and me answering :)

3:57 PM
@Helmar I'll have to keep thinking to write a question you can't answer then :P

@Aurora0001 Challenge accepted
Anyways, Sean is off even more with 2-13 ;)

@Helmar no-one complains about more answers than questions though :P
What does everyone think about this comment?

been there, discussed that

I'm not at all a fan of it
Writing a meta answer now though

(look upstairs, oh Allmighty)

4:11 PM
@Aurora0001 The comment or the question?

@Helmar comment
0
A: Easy questions - or: Are there questions just too simple for this site?

Aurora0001I'll be brutally honest in what I say below, since I think this is an issue which can easily lead to driving users away from the site if we don't handle it carefully. I think if a question is on-topic (i.e. it is about IoT), well-written (clear, not too broad or opinion based) and is likely to ...

I sometimes feel bad when I answer a question using the first google match.

@BenceKaulics well that would qualify as lack of research on the OP's part most of the time
@Aurora0001 nice, oh Allmighty

@Ghanima thanks
also, did you hear I now have infinite stars?

Oh boy, we'll all be starstruck, literally.
2

4:27 PM
@Ghanima congratulations
500 rep

wow, GFM!

Also @Ghanima, you'll be pleased to know I'm going to test waiting before accepting answers a bit now to see if that increases the attention that the questions/answers get

yeah, I was hoping for an anwser by @Helmar

If so, I think it's only fair that I leave them unaccepted for longer so answers get seen by more users

@Ghanima You're welcome :)

4:41 PM
Sorry, read that message wrong.

Can everyone view what removed chat messages looked like?
Or is it a room-owner only privilege?

Hidden from me.

oh, fair enough
Even if you click on the arrow and go on to 'history'?

I can view my own removed message's history only.

Yep, same here.

4:45 PM
Good, I was about to say deleting messages was pointless if not

I'm assuming chat mods can too.

@anonymous2 well mods are like overpowered room owners
can't they @Ghanima ;)

Yes, otherwise flagging would be useless.

4:58 PM
At least you can see who deleted your message
So you can rightly complain that the real dictator here is @Ghanima, and he's not benevolent!

@Aurora0001 just keep pretending that you're this room's benevolent dictator... by grace of Ghanima (Mua ha ha ha!!)

@Ghanima did you just pin your meta post, or did I do it and not realise?

I did not pin a thing

That's interesting
'cancel stars' unpins it
Did anyone else get a planned maintenance popup recently?
I suspect it was just a caching bug

Not me.

5:11 PM
Can't find any mention of planned maintenance so probably not intentional
Also, just looked at the area 51 views counter
not looking great
Still a slow downwards trend

5:41 PM
Anyone got any favourite IoT blogs they read that might be interested in collaborating with IoT?
2

6:21 PM
Unfortunately not. But I am going to check LinkedIN. There most be some IoT groups that can show some interest.

@BenceKaulics sounds like a great idea

Hmm, 827 groups with Internet of Things in its name.

it's quite the buzzword

Yes it is.

or should I say, þe ol buzzword

6:27 PM
Though there are some promising I might join.

6:37 PM
I have submitted join request to two large groups. We shall see.

go get 'em, tiger

7:21 PM
@Ghanima I've deleted my comment now on your Mosquitto question (you might want to do the same now otherwise it may look confusing!)
Also congratulations everyone - only 7 more questions until we reach 100!

@Aurora0001 meh, I am used to deleting all comments

7:37 PM
Also, maybe it'd be a nice idea to run some sort of competition when the site gets into public beta

what kind of competition, oh Madnicificence? No mere mortal shall dare competing with thou.

@Ghanima I'm welcome to any ideas
Speak, (semi-)loyal subject
I think perhaps some sort of building challenge would be fun but the cost of doing it would be too much for people I'm guessing
Ideally any competition we have should have a low cost barrier otherwise no-one will enter (which would just be disappointing)

we did two things at RPi lately

but neither really applies here

No, I suppose not, but it's a good thing to look at
Did any ideas work well on RPi.SE that we could steal repurpose?

I am doing nothing else than thinking about this question all the time

7:47 PM
I think any sort of big event is good because it gives us a reason to promote without spamming

8:15 PM
when it comes to moderation I am more of a janitor-kind of a type, not so much an entertainer ;)

@Ghanima there's no problem with that though - moderators do have to... moderate! :P

8:55 PM
You're doing plenty of cleanup work with your new edit privileges @Ghanima ;)

that's more like it!
although @Helmar hardly left anything to correct
big drawback anyways, no +2 anymore :(

@Ghanima just wait, the inevitable horde of grammar mistakes will come
@Ghanima yeah, you could have farmed a lot of rep from that :P

9:15 PM
so, how's your event planning comming along?

9:30 PM
If anyone wanted to try a jog at -20 C with me this afternoon, they would have been welcome... Brr! Forgot to bring mittens, too.
@Ghanima Congrats on that, btw!

@anonymous2 thanks, but any rep is actually your fault ;)

@Ghanima How so?

you give it and you take it
not just you, you, but all of you

@Ghanima Oh, okay, gotcha.
Afraid that logic doesn't hold very far, though, because I'm still only at 300 or so. Not the community's fault. :)

excessive voting behaviour
I tried to do my share today, votes are exhausted

9:37 PM
I haven't succeeded at that one yet, which is odd, because I frequently succeed on mech.SE.

9:48 PM
@Aurora0001 Yes, like when anon2 starts posting...

I get that some people might not hurray this one
