Actually, looking at it again, the Scryfall suggestion was actually older than the other one I linked. Both of those suggestions were made to address the same problem: for a few reasons, some cards could not be linked properly. That problem has been addressed by the implementation of the post I linked, so we don't need another change to solve it again. — murgatroid99 ♦ 2 days ago
@murgatroid99 the feature request doesn't just fix bugs, but adds language support and uses a better maintained and more reliable service - meaning fewer future bugs that we'd need SO Devs to fix. Gather goes down (or at least used to) when new cards are added, whereas Scryfall doesn't. There's lots more to using scryfall than just fixing a few cards. — Pureferret 1 min ago
@murgatroid99 thought it might be better to discuss here?
@doppelgreener might know more than me, but there's a lot more to using scryfall than just fixing a few cards

At this point Gatherer is sometimes incomplete or incorrect or has altogether broken pages: github.com/scryfall/gatherer-bugs/issues
Disclaimer: I've joined Scryfall staff since making that feature request, but I still do not stand to benefit in any way whatsoever based on this issue. The only change for me will be which thing we use for card links.
That said, I still stand by that proposal. Scryfall gets cards in earlier, our index is more complete, we fix things that are objectively errors (a recent egregious example is Cleave, a less egregious example is all the DFC alt pages being broken), we don't have any broken pages (like Hanweir Militia Captain), and more significantly we fix the language issue: every user will see the same page after following the link.
But I'm not recommending that as, like, a marketer. I'm a volunteer who does data entry and helps manage their discord community. I've got no stake in this other than as a player of the game and user of the site, and in that respect, I'd much prefer seeing Scryfall links.
Bonus points: Scryfall isn't nagging you to use a client app which works even worse somehow (for real, Companion has some seriously awful breakages for card lookup, for example take a look at the modal lands) and the number of people maintaining Scryfall is more than zero.

From what I have seen scryfall appears to lack the rulings that gather has which can be very helpful in answering questions. I know in the past I have answered them by just looking at the listing.

Rulings would be the weak point. Scryfall is probably 99% complete on those, but periodically Gatherer will come out with rulings after release (which we pull) and then arbitrarily later do a second pass to change them again, fixing errors or adding more. They'll also periodically make changes to older cards and we've got no way to find out; they don't release a changelog.
We rely on user reports to find out about the changes we didn't anticipate and sync it in ASAP.
Personally if I'm looking for rulings I'll check scryfall and if I don't find anything relevant I'll double check gatherer. In my personal experience there's rarely a difference between them. We can still do that as power users answering the question.

@doppelgreener done
@doppelgreener Also scryfall links through to gather, but you don't get the reverse
@doppelgreener doesn't gatherer reflect the change releases after sets get released?

5:16 PM
@AncientSwordRage generally Gatherer gets all the cards at some point after the final preview day and before the prerelease. Then the rulings go up a few days after the cards go up. Then, at some point, I've noticed we start getting reports that the rulings changed again and recently released cards now have rulings different to what we imported the first time, but we haven't pinned down when that second pass actually happens.
Also the retro cards in Modern Horizons all got totally new rulings, which we discovered soon after.

5:30 PM
@AncientSwordRage thanks!

5:58 PM
The thing Gatherer has going for it that Scryfall can unfortunately never match is rule 108.1. There's value in being the official source of truth.

@murgatroid99 Like @doppelgreener said and I covered, scryfall links through to gatherer if you need to get 108.I on any card.

I know the link is there, that's not the same as being gatherer
And I don't know what you mean by "get 108.1 on any card". My point is that the rules say that gatherer is the place to find official up to date card text, and so that's what we should reference when linking cards.

@murgatroid99 99/100 times I want to see Scryfall, and that one time I could link through. The way it currently is, even if you wanted gatherer 99/100 times, there's no way through from gatherer to scryfall
@murgatroid99 What I mean to say is, if the vast vast vast majority of the time Scryfall has the exact same card/rules text as gatherer, if you did need to double check (i.e. 'use' rule 108.1), you can click the link in scryfall and go though to see if gatherer is different

^ this is what I do too

6:14 PM
I know that Scryfall is a good source of this information. But Gatherer is still the official source of the information, and I think that's important.

I guess? But it's extremely rare for that to be relevant?
Maybe it matters if somebody says in a question "Look Scryfall says X!" and then rarely somebody has to say in an answer "Look gatherer says Y"?
But if there's a discrepancy then a) you can link directly to gatherer (like you'd link to a tweet or mothership article announcing a rules change ahead of time) and b) include the auto link as scryfall will eventually be up to date
linking to scryfall won't trick anybody into thinking that scryfall is official?

None of that is my point. I'm not talking about discrepancies or tricking anyone. I'm just saying that the MTG rules say that Gatherer is the official source of card text, so we should link to Gatherer to provide card text.

> the MTG rules say that Gatherer is the official source of card text, so we should link to Gatherer to provide card text.
I don't agree
if other sources didn't also contain official card text, or it was hosted illegally then then I agree
but the unofficial site 99.9999999% of the time has the official card text
and if it doesn't it will eventually
and it's 10,000% times a better site without any of the language issues etc

I thought the last update to the feature fixed the langue issues
And fixed some other issues as well

Yeah, so did I

6:24 PM
The only issue I thought that remained was that scryfall got cards in faster
But that was only for pre release sets
Which I don't see as a big issue
I think it would be good to actually lay out what issues remain with the current setup

Not sure that is valid, would it give the same results when it is linked in a question?

@AncientSwordRage Is that what you meant by "language issues"?

@JoeW not sure, but searching the term breaks as well
@murgatroid99 thats the etc.
The current language issues might be fixed (I just tested it myself)

That link appears to be a card from an older set that the site has issues with
And not sure I would want to switch away from gatherer for a couple of problematic cards
A transforming creature from 2016-04-08

6:29 PM
@JoeW My main motivation is that scryfall is nicer to use, so it's my personal default
also, it looks like some other links are broken?

A: Is Argothian Elder a Druid?

Fr33danRule 108.1 states: 108.1. Use the Oracle™ card reference when determining a card’s wording. A card’s Oracle text can be found using the Gatherer card database at Gatherer.Wizards.com This means that the text on Gatherer is correct regardless of what is printed on the card. This is because ...

Right, but from what I have seen I prefer gatherer. I am not sure personal preference is a reason to change it.

@AncientSwordRage This conversation started with a request to fix existing broken links. That's the whole reason we're talking about this in the first place

@JoeW I assumed that more people preferred scryfall, or would if they got familiar with it. The user experience feels objectively better to me

@AncientSwordRage Try that link again
The answer had to be edited for fixes to take place
I did an edit and the link works now

@JoeW Don't fix individual links, just wait for the mass fix to go through

6:33 PM
I normally would not

@murgatroid99 The conversation I started was because I saw an employee about to make a change and thought I'd point out the alternative (which I thought was objectively better)

But in this case I fixed it to show that the link was working

@JoeW I see now what the issue is

@AncientSwordRage I think you misread something. The only thing that was requested in that question was to re-render links with the new format that has already been put in place
Nothing was going to meaningfully change, it was just a mass fix

@murgatroid99 I think you misread my chat message: "The conversation I started ..."

6:34 PM
@AncientSwordRage You started the conversation with a link to a comment on the question I'm talking about

Right, that comment is on a question asking for a mass fix, not a change

Don't forget this question where autocard was improved boardgames.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/1727/…

@murgatroid99 yeah, but if after looking at all the facts (Which slate didn't have at the time) the devs decide they'd rather switch over to scryfall it makes sense to make 1 change not two

And that answer even says it will not update old posts
I would guess that mass updating the posts and changing over to scryfall would be two different sets of work

6:37 PM
@AncientSwordRage Switching the link destination again and then rerendering all links would be more work than just rerendering all links

And that the switch would be a bit larger

@JoeW you would update the serverside code to use scryfall, and rerender the posts at the same time

And I still question outside of a few cards and prerelease why we need to switch

what I'm saying would take more work would be to re-render to the fixed format, and then re-render again if we switch to scryfall

@AncientSwordRage You are missing the work needed to switch the auto card feature over to scryfal and the testing that would be needed in the first place
But I think the the question remains of why switch in the first place

6:39 PM
@JoeW scryfall is just a better service than WotC is willing/able to provide

I don't recall seeing that the devs say they supported the switch

> Requesting we use a third-party resource seems weird, so I feel this merits some explanation. M:TG players use a lot of third-party services to augment our involvement in the game. Gatherer plays a role as the single source of truth for Magic card details (including errata, etc) but ...
> it is not the go-to search engine. Up to last year the go-to search engine was Magiccards.info, but then Scryfall came out as an effort to modernize MTG searching & deliver things Magiccards.info wasn't doing, and so far they're succeeding.
@JoeW I never said they did?
> if [...] the devs decide they'd rather switch over to scryfall [...]

Okay re reading it and see what you mean but I first read it as they did

@JoeW I getcha

But either way I don't know if a question from 2017 is a good reason to switch
Maybe put up a new question and see what people think

6:43 PM
@JoeW I'm on it

@AncientSwordRage Thanks!

@murgatroid99 @doppelgreener new meta Q dropped about
I don't have it in me right now to check what is or isn't still relevant from DG's post, I'm hoping she won't mind answering the new meta when free 🥺

Q: Do we still want to switch to using Scryfall as the autocard service?

PureferretThis 2017 post makes some compelling arguments for switching over to Scryfall. But it's 4 years (and a change) out of date. Before we commit to mass-fixing the now broken gatherer links, can we double check that we wouldn't rather switch search engine to Scryfall at the same time?

@murgatroid99 I've done simple mass/batch updates before, and triple checked them and it's still gone wrong. I don't know what happened last batch update (if there was a last time) but I'm not sure why we're assuming it's simple?

@AncientSwordRage Because it's literally just rerendering posts without changing their source content. They already have scripts to do that, as linked in the meta question that started this.

@murgatroid99 that's a point in favour of not waiting, for sure

Yep and the fact that I could edit a post with no changes to the link supports the ease of the change

@JoeW I've seen DB throttling mess up an update though

7:20 PM
I'll wait and see if we get an answer from a dev

7:42 PM
@AncientSwordRage I would agree with that but I would think it would be the same or worse with a change to a different link provider

@JoeW I think the main thing I want to avoid is a) duplicating staff effort (two batch updates) b) discentivizing staff switching search engine (assuming the community agrees on the switch) because they just make a batch update.

7:58 PM
@murgatroid99 Language issues are covered under the first heading of the Scryfall feature request. It's 4 paragraphs in; the image is the end of that section. Short summary: people can set a local viewing language for Gatherer, e.g. if I'm German I can set my display language to German. Name lookups search within my configured language. If I've got my language set to German, the link produced by [mtg:Lightning Bolt] is a 404.

@doppelgreener OK, I am aware of that, but that issue was supposed to be fixed with the recent Gatherer link update, so it shouldn't be relevant anymore.

Testing: Lightning Bolt
here's the Language page, you can access it from the footer.

That link doesn't match the current link format

Ok, current link format: gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/…
Ok, that does actually work. That's a surprise and a relief.
@AncientSwordRage Language issues appear to be fixed in the current version of autocard.

I mean, that question suggesting the new format said it fixed the language issue, and I believed it

8:05 PM
I was just sure I remembered it not fixing that or having anything to do with it, because lots of what we'd tried hadn't.

8:18 PM
So updating my list, my reasons for personally wanting Scryfall links instead of Gatherer are that sometimes Gatherer is actually broken or inadequate:
• Cleave text is wrong on Gatherer.
• Some card pages are broken and cannot load.
• +2 Mace is still missing.
• Every Alchemy card is missing, whether it's the new ones or the rebalanced ones.
• Several other Arena-only cards are missing.
And those are just the issues relevant to basic card lookup. And the fact is things are getting broken at an increasing rate, because Gatherer is not maintained. The "card pages just don't load" thing used
I agree that Gatherer is the official source of text—when the page exists and the text is actually correct (the text of Cleave cards is not). Scryfall reflects that official text. If things go out of date, we get them up to date ASAP as soon as it's reported, and unlike Gatherer Scryfall fixes its errors.
Definitely "it is the official source, full stop" is a big deal. But it's an official source that is increasingly not very good.
By comparison: when it comes to the actual rules of the game, we're always linking to Yawgatog, or mtg wiki, or the Magic Judges version when that was still being kept up to date. We're not always linking to the CR PDF because it's a comparatively terrible experience to navigate. We do this even though they could have mistakes or be out of date without us realising. So it's weird that when it comes to our autocard, out of the two options available, we're consigned to the worse one.
I think a point in favour of using Gatherer remains that we can go: Is Arthogian Elder a Druid? Yes it is. Look at the card you linked to, that all these links point to. Also that nobody makes the mistake we're treating Scryfall itself as the official rules source. But on balance that's not really a big concern of mine that outweighs the above concerns against Gatherer.

8:49 PM
@doppelgreener Did you check out the test links in the thread I linked earlier? It should be good to use for a bunch of the cases you mentioned. boardgames.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/1727/…

@JoeW When the feature request came out it looks like I made a test battery myself with every link we'd yet listed in any meta on the topic: boardgames.meta.stackexchange.com/a/1760/5573
But like ... no test link fixes any of the bullet points in that message of mine just above. The pages are just plain broken/missing.

The links wouldn't have been updated with the fix and would have to be edited to match the current link code
Doing a bunch of test links is fine but judging them without considering the recent changes isn't

The test battery links use the recent changes. They're literally using the code in the question.
Murgatroid99 and I confirmed above that the new links do in fact fix the multilingual issue, thankfully.

No they don't
I just added them to my answer showing test cases
And every single one of them worked for me
Your answer was last edited around 1 and a half years before the changes went in

By multilingual issues I mean I can visit a link for "Lightning Bolt" and get lightning bolt even if the site's configured to German
gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/… works even though it's the English name and I have the site configured to German; it gives me the German card
That's good! That's fixed! The new version works! It's everything I could ask for.
Certain cards still do not work, but I can accept that.
I am not at this point trying to allege that there are any multilingual issues we face with our present autocard behaviour; that is not a concern anymore that I have.
@JoeW also for the record, these still do not load if my Gatherer is set to another language, such as German. They still experience a multilingual issue, but they are a rare exception. The last half of my answer is using the latest format — that one you're giving me there — and it is dedicated exclusively to the cards that break faced with a non-Englsh configuration.
But they are a minority of cards, and that is fine, and the overwhelming majority of cards are working.

9:08 PM
I am happy to accept that there are still issues with the site, just that all the test cases I have work for me and the links used appeared to be old
Thank you for retesting

@JoeW The Very Cryptic Command link I took that screenshot from is this link right here.

Yep, seems like it is still broken
Thanks, I added that link to my answer so people could test it easier.
As a side question wonder if it would be possible to have mtg point to gatherer and make a new one scryfall (or something like it) to point to scryfall and just have the user chose which one to use.

I'm thinking of making a userscript so people can opt in to Scryfall instead that way.

9:46 PM
@doppelgreener it exists in SOUP?
one of the answers one one of the metas mentions it

@AncientSwordRage oh. i don't use soup

@doppelgreener That would also be a good idea!

@doppelgreener that's fair
If the code could fit in a bookmarklet that would be great 😊
I don't get extensions at work
