Q: Community Wiki by default?

Seth JI've edited this answer 12 times, each time trying to improve it in some way. Suddenly it is marked as community wiki. Did a mod do this, or did I accidentally do this (by clicking on community wiki inadvertently), or, as I suspect, did I do this as a consequence of hitting some magic number of e...

@msh210 why did you delete your comment? It makes mine less funny! ;-)

Q: Why do Jews say there is only one God, when the Torah says there are many?

aviThe Torah says "let us make man", so why do Jews keep saying there is only one God? This question is Purim Torah and is not intended to be taken completely seriously. See the Purim Torah policy.

@HodofHod where?

I was going to ask one on how the Torah can say that G-d ate the world: "Vayochal Elokim bayom hashevi'i melachto asher asah", but I thought it might be too off....

@ShmuelBrill I LIKE that question! First time I'm seeing it!

It got downvoted three times within (IIRC) a few hours

3:10 AM
It lived for only 28 minutes..... <sob>

some people have no sense of humor

@ShmuelBrill I know! <scandalized voice>

btw, moshe stopped using the whole SE network. (it may not have been personal against Judaism.se)
@HodofHod we lost out 150th user.
we need a new one

@ShmuelBrill I know. I was going to do a "Dear brethren we are gathered," post, but I decided that would be tasteless. Gosh, I have the worst ideas! ;-)
@ShmuelBrill I've been trying to push this site out to friends of mine on an individual basis.
@ShmuelBrill It seems he only joined the other sites because of this one.

@HodofHod The issue with this site is that the people whom I know and would be most capable of contributing would 1) not have internet and 2) not feel comfortable here.

3:19 AM
@ShmuelBrill "Finsternet?? Feh!!"

@HodofHod Where?
Oh, I see.

@msh210 I was being facetious, of course.

@HodofHod I'll go flag yours as obsolete.:-)

@HodofHod and more specifically chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/4?m=3714933#3714933 . Weird.

3:24 AM
@msh210 @ShmuelBrill what just happened there??

@HodofHod is that for mods only?

@ShmuelBrill yeah.

@ShmuelBrill We can't say....
@msh210 Shoot! You did it again! ;-)

@msh210 @HodofHod is this some mod inside joke?

@ShmuelBrill No, just go see that comment I left again

3:26 AM
isn't there a teacher's lounge?

@ShmuelBrill Yes, that is where the link is to.
@ShmuelBrill It's existence is a well-known secret. It's contents are super-top-secret-confidential-yaharog-v'al-yomar
Ok, fine, you talked me into it, I'll tell you
NOT!
;-)
I'm sorry everybody, It's been one of those days.
@l Hello!!
We missed you!

@l welcome! (Very welcome!)
@HodofHod and to answer your question, no, I haven't read the ChatCast yet.

@msh210 <horrified> You mean, you DON'T KNOW???

:-)

What would SE do without xkcd one-boxing....

3:36 AM
Anyway, I must go. In chronological order, have a good night, an easy fast, and a happy Purim.

@msh210 Thank you! Same to you and yours!

@HodofHod Me too on both counts!
@HodofHod Suggestion: Put O-Cmon stickers on your Mishloach Manot

@IsaacMoses I'm for an undelete and +1 unless @ShmuelBrill objects
@IsaacMoses Heh, Heh!

@HodofHod ok

@HodofHod Make that +2

Q: How much is keifel for Gneivas Daas?

Shmuel BrillWhen one steals knowledge (Gneivas Daas) and gets caught by witnesses, how does he pay back double? PS. Why is there no Gzeilas Daas? This question is Purim Torah and is not intended to be taken completely seriously. See the Purim Torah policy.

@IsaacMoses Did you get a chance to read the chat-cast today?

@HodofHod Not yet, nor to listen to the podcast
I actually need to get back to seudah-cooking and the latter

@IsaacMoses Ah, you see that they mentioned our Purim Torah policy though.

@HodofHod is that why

Q: Rejecting others' friend requests on Facebook

jakeInspired by this question: If one receives a friend request on Facebook, especially from another Jew, is it permissible to reject them? On the one hand, "חברים כל ישראל" - "All Jews are friends"; but on the other hand, it is non-beneficial to be socially connected to someone you don't know well...

has so many views?

@HodofHod You bet I did.
@ShmuelBrill I'm sure it is

@ShmuelBrill I believe so. I commented there to that effect

3:48 AM
@HodofHod I wasn't joking. My kids had a great time sticking them on ours.

@IsaacMoses Sounds like fun! I sadly do not have a printer or labels. Nor am I yet sure what I'm doing for Shaloch Manos this year. I'm a bit of a Wandering Jew.

@HodofHod Sounds like you'd be an ideal recipient thereof!

@IsaacMoses Labels?

@HodofHod No, silly. Printers. No wandering Jew is complete without a bunch of gifted printers.

@Alex. It's a shod. I'm leaving CH tonight. Maybe we'll meet next time
@IsaacMoses Ahhh!!!
and thats shod with a komatz

3:54 AM
@HodofHod not a Tzeriei?

@ShmuelBrill not even a chirik

@ShmuelBrill Definitely not a patach. :)
@HodofHod OK, catch you another time, I guess. Where do you live, anyway, that you're in the 'hood so often?

@Alex Nowhere in the area, actually. I'm in town for weddings and yomei d'pagra every so often.

ok, everyone, have an easy fast and a happy Purim

@Alex You too!

3:59 AM
@Alex You too!

@Alex you too.

OK, so I know what a sheid is. What are a shawd, a sheed, and a shahd?

@IsaacMoses what's the pronunciation difference between shahd and shawd

@HodofHod The former would be with a patach, which @Alex preculded strongly. The latter would be with a kamatz. The difference in pronunciation between these two marks is a matter of dispute between various sub-cultures.

4:04 AM
@IsaacMoses ah. I've just never seen a komatz transliterated that way
I know all that other stuff of course!

@HodofHod Interesting. You're not the first person to be surprised at such transliteration. 'aw' was the standard transliteration for kamatz in my schooling, IIRC, and I think it's used in the Birnbaum Siddur.
@HodofHod ... See judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/8461/… and the next comment

@IsaacMoses I don't know, it bothers my english reading sensibilities. If anything I'd go with shuhd.
I should have
Oh Gosh! Will the silliness never end???

A: How much is keifel for Gneivas Daas?

HodofHodAs for why there is no 'Gzeilas Daas' the answer is simple! Someone stole and destroyed the concept from Jewish Law. There was a Gneivas Daas of Gzeilas Daas!!

@HodofHod It will in a few days.

@IsaacMoses awwww..... But Mommm!!!!
Anywho... I've got to run and catch my bus to Montreal in a half hour. TTY all L

@HodofHod Bon voyage!
BTW, I reviewed all of @l's deleted Qs and As and undeleted any that are of particular value (=most).
... and, having completed that little chore, I really must get back to my cooking and podcast-listening. I wish anyone who's still listening a worthwhile ta'anit.

Alex Miller on March 06, 2012

With the recent “REP-OCALYPSE” that happened over the weekend, we thought it was a great time to do another podcast – so come join Joel, Jarrod, and Josh as they talk about some of the recent changes to the site and the motivations behind them.

JOEL: This is not necessarily a podcast, but it might turn into something useable, perhaps in the form of a podcast, maybe. The goal is to talk about all of the questions that are getting closed, aka REP-OCALYPSE NOW.

Part One: there has been closing and deletion of very popular old questions going on lately. Are we happy with how this is going? What are the other options? …

^^ The part about Purim Torah is 33:50 - 36:40. The context before and after is interesting as well. Go listen. It's amusing to hear Joel murder jake's excellent Facebook responsum by giving the Rashi on it.

okay rabosai, vram left.
did you guys hear? he tried to leave and delete posts, but his account got frozen.
nobody tried to hack it, but it still locked it

@AdamMosheh Why does he want to delete his posts? Even if he's gone (which I don't find necessary) he could leave his posts for posterity!

6:49 AM
@DoubleAA he doesn't want somebody to be able to come and see what he wrote. because he is a real person who has a real life.

@AdamMosheh Seems a little irresponsible to write things on the internet that you don't want the world to see.
@AdamMosheh And all of us here have real lives.

7:46 AM
@AdamMosheh which is why (some of us) don't use real names.

2 hours later…
9:17 AM
@ShmuelBrill wait a second..... Shmuel Brill isn't your real name???? ;)

2 hours later…
11:13 AM
@AdamMosheh I suspended his account (after attempting to contact him elsewise to no effect) and, as I mentioned above, undeleted any deleted posts that I thought were of particular value. Once you type information into this site, it belongs to the community and to the Internet. Other people type other stuff or choose not to type other stuff due to that information being there. So no, you don't get to unilaterally rip it down.
... There's nothing in the posts that I reinstated that's particularly identifying of its author. If there's anything Vram has a particular reason for wanting removed, he's welcome to contact me and the other mods by replying to the suspension message, by pinging us in here, or by emailing me at info@yodeya.com .
... or, when the suspension is over, he can re-delete selected posts, first putting a comment on each one explaining why he wants that post to come down.

9 hours later…
8:20 PM
@IsaacMoses when is the parshas hashavua chat?
@HodofHod I don't think you are called to the torah as "Yaamod Harav Hatomim Hodofhod ben..." :)

2 hours later…
10:02 PM
@ShmuelBrill you're right, I'm not called "harav" anything :-) (which is not even a raya to anything, many people avoid "Rabbi" and "Harav", e.g. Reb Mendel, Reb Berkeh, Reb Peretz, etc...)

@HodofHod They were called to the Torah as "Reb"?
