@Scimonster It can happen in any linear combination of 8 and 11, and then it is still only equal to an error of +/- 1.

@DoubleAA That doesn't sound right... maybe it occurs after 8 and then 11 and then 8 and then 11 years? That sounds more reasonable. But I don't know that it's correct: maybe what you said is correct. (But in any event I agree with you that it's +/- 1 or 2.)

1:10 AM
@DoubleAA Actually, what you said can't be right... every integer is a linear combination of 8 & 11.
What I meant by my thing (which I still don't knowis correct) can be more precisely stated as follows: There's some year (1 to 19) n of the cycle such that year-n things occur on the same date in year n+8 (mod 19).

1:38 AM
@msh210 And why can't that be the case? How often do you compare things from hundreds of years ago? (You'd have to adjust for Gregorian issues at that scale of course.)
Oh. A whole number linear combination of them. I didn't mean like Bezout.
Every number beyond 8*11 - 8 - 11 = 69 can be written as such, but I don't know if that should be a problem. I doesn't happen in every such numbered year, but IIRC it could.

2:38 AM
@DoubleAA I'm not sure I understand the difference between "could" and "does" in this context.
@Scimonster Sounds like we need a Mi Yodeya question....

@Scimonster Julian/Gregorian problem
It's always a Julian -> Gregorian problem
Whenever you cross the century mark, that is

@msh210 Which set of them would be determined by where in secular and Jewish leap year cycles the original date falls. (My birthdays will/did match exactly at age 11,19,30,49,95 and to within a day at ages 22,57,68,76. Go figure.)

@Wisnoskij Read my last paragraph again. Four years after I wrote that, if you spent any time on a site like Mi Yodeya, you'd likely see that a community like that would not likely coalesce like they have on a generic "all religions" site. There is a lot of passion and motivation that goes into what they do. Yes, areas of knowledge do not exist in a vacuum... but if you don't look at the community-building aspect of this (those motivated to build this site), you missed the point of my post entirely. — Robert Cartaino ♦ Aug 6 '15 at 14:34
I hadn't seen the (old) meta post to which that comment is attached before. This was right in the midst of our work on "Days of Awe - Mi Yodeya?"
@IsaacMoses that Worldbuilding blog post you were anticipating a couple weeks ago is now up.

@MonicaCellio nice
I see that I'd already upvoted RC's answer. :)

@IsaacMoses I hadn't (hadn't seen it), but that was easily corrected.

@MonicaCellio nice. I like "I am fairly religious, yes. I consider improving myself to be a full-time job, and the Internet is a big place full of people who don’t share my beliefs, so I’m not so concerned with what others do so long as nobody’s being rude. (Jews feel no need to evangelize.)"
Especially the first clause of the second sentence. Well-put!
@MonicaCellio what pointed you at it (alluded to in a comment)

@IsaacMoses thank you.

@IsaacMoses this question was asked today and links to it.
