The teenager reading Vayetze this morning read "אלקי אברהם אביך" (in 28:13) with a מהפך פשטא קטן instead of a פשטא מנח קטן. I wonder whether that's a correctable offense. (It seems, after all, to change whom אביך is referring to.) (I didn't correct him.)
In Hilchot Kri'at Shema 3:14, Maimonides wrote:
If one is reciting [the Shema] and passes gas, he should stop until the odor subsides and resume his recitation afterwards. The same applies to one studying Torah.
When another person passes gas, even though one should stop reciting the She...
@HodofHod I don't know that Asking here is a great solution, since it's highly unlikely this particular mistake was ever discussed explicitly in a source. It has all the problems of a RFפ post.
@DoubleAA I thought so also. The only reason I didn't correct him is that I figured it'd accomplish nothing without a several-minute-long explanation on my part (to both the baal k'ria and the principal of the school I was praying in).
@Scimonster Good point. The same baal k'ria will (presumably) read again Thursday. Alas, I no longer remember who it was. Doubtless the gabay can tell me.
@IsaacMoses :-) I'm probably the only person who was there this morning and thinks about this kind of thing. (Not necessarily the only person who knows to correct it: others who were present may say "oh, yeah, good point, that's probably correctable". But the only person to think of it.)
@Scimonster That's a complicated suggestions bc then the rabbi of the minyan may decide to take out the Torah and read again (correctable means do it again, even afterwards), causing more hassle and embarrassment all around.
@msh210 I wasn't sure whether we could start that right here in front of him. :-)
@Pops, on an unrelated note, that other project has been stalled for rather a while now (not at me) and I'm not sure what, if anything, we can do about it. If you have a sec, can you catch up on the other room to see where we are? Thanks.
@Pops we're not asking you to leave. We can talk any time. Also, @msh210 might be suggesting that it's totally cool to have you here for it. Besides, then we can monitor your reactions. :-)
