ַ@MoriDoweedhYaa3qob Your "o's" really throw me off. cholam malei, chaser, kamatz, kamatz aleph, who knows? And "s" could be sin or samech. There's generally a lot of ambiguity with vowels, though if you'd settle for "כתיב מלא" it would make things much easier :D

1:21 AM
@HodofHod all of them are aw

@MoriDoweedhYaa3qob You use "o's" quite frequently, but they're not mentioned in the pronunciation guide you put on meta. Examples: "ubeerchotho", "loshon haqodhosh", "saa3dyo", "dhoweed", "gamoroh", "brochoth".

....as a general rule, I don't have much free time anymore (related MLH post)....so I'm not ignoring you if it takes much longer to respond than it used to....
....this is the first time I logged in in two days, and I likely won't be able to be as involved here as I used to :(
....it is what it is.
....also, I lost a couple of prepared Purim torah questions (even though I saved them, @YeZ :P) ...if I can find the time I'll see if I can reconstruct them; shouldn't be too hard.

@NoachmiFrankfurt We did indeed get snow, for the first time in 20 years. Only around an inch. In other places (e.g. Yerushalayim) they got a lot more though.

Hello, does anyone know why in terms of attractability why some questions get 500 views within 3 hours, but some questions remain at like 20 or 30? are some questions promoted or directed to a different part of the site depending not the tags or its just what makes people interested
btw im in Yerushalayim and the sun seems to out in full force and melting the snow

@Nafkamina Some questions become Hot Network Questions (HNQ) which are shown all over the SE network, consequently bringing in lots more views.

11:58 AM
And how does a question become HNQ

12:18 PM
@HodofHod they are pronounced as aw
i thought we were doing a pronunciation qna

Q: How do the "arbitrary hotness points" work on the new Stack Exchange home page?

Maxim ZaslavskyI really like the new Stack Exchange home page, where certain questions from the Stack Exchange Network are presented, along with a hotness rating that is described as "arbitrary" in its tooltip. How do these arbitrary hotness points work?

BTW, @Nafkamina, to send a reply to a message (so the person gets notified), hover over the message you want to reply to, and click the arrow in the bottom right.

Just discovered that http://www.sefaria.org/Numbers.21.21-35?lang=he-en, denoting a range of verses, is a syntax that works in a Sefaria URL

Q: Is closing a M.Y. question because it is "primarily opinion-based" a matter of opinion?

DanFMany M.Y. questions are closed for the "opinion-based" reason. To me, that seems like a matter of 4 people's opinions, or just the moderator's opinion. That's my opinion on this policy. What's yours? This question is Purim Torah and is not intended to be taken completely seriously. See the Puri...

@IsaacMoses This is fantastic.

@HodofHod Came across it searching for good Rosh Chodesh music for background.

@MoriDoweedhYaa3qob The pronunciation is not what concerns me. I have to reverse the English spelling into a Hebrew one, and I can't do that if they're all spelled "o" :(
@IsaacMoses This is the first video I've seen of them.
It's been a long time since I've heard them; I never realized how skilled they were with their instruments.
Not enough of that in Jewish Music today.

Diaspora Yeshiva Band (Hebrew: להקת ישיבת התפוצות‎) was an Orthodox Jewish band founded at the Diaspora Yeshiva on Mount Zion, Jerusalem, by baal teshuva students from the United States. In existence from 1975 to 1983, the band infused rock and bluegrass with Jewish lyrics, creating a style of music it called "Hasidic rock" or "Country and Eastern". The band was very popular on college campuses in the early to mid-1980s, and was well-known in Jerusalem for its Saturday-night concerts at David's Tomb. It had a considerable influence on contemporary Jewish religious music, inspiring later bands such...
@HodofHod Have you heard of Andy Statman? He's a nice Jewish virtuoso.

@IsaacMoses I know his name. I feel like he's done some Chabad Niggunim. One sec...

6:28 PM
@IsaacMoses Of course. Met him at a wedding once. He made fun of my choice of omelette.

@HodofHod 8^D Was not expecting you to say that.

@IsaacMoses Which is probably a good thing, all things considered. :)
@IsaacMoses Wait, where did Itzhak Perlman go?!

@HodofHod I swapped him out for a vid with actual vid.

@IsaacMoses I'm putting these on my "to listen to" list, because right now I'm going through "Jerusalem is Calling"
@IsaacMoses Ah.. Yeah. I've got a bunch of his albums. His one with Helfgott is pretty special. Though I appreciate the skill more on his solo albums.
^ Andy Statman is listed as one of the Artists. Maybe arrangers too, not sure.

6:38 PM
@DoubleAA it's a slight improvement.

That, ladies and gentleman, was a textbook example of "Drive-by Chatting"
♫ Come to your Rhythm Messiahs.... ♫
@IsaacMoses It's all your fault!
...and I love you for it!

@HodofHod What is?

@HodofHod :( but they are all o
sholom is shawlawm

I'm gonna have these songs stuck in my head all Shabbos! Can't wait! ;)

shabbawth

6:49 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaa3qob K, here's a suggestion: would you be willing to use a script that converts your english typing to hebrew typing, but completely ignores nikkudot?

@HodofHod Certainly could have worse stuff stuck there.

idc as long as people can read the hebrew

@IsaacMoses Well played, sir. I clicked it fully expecting to get -rolled.
@IsaacMoses I feel like I should by that domain now and do exactly that...

@HodofHod I anti-rickrolled you

@MoriDoweedhYaa3qob You'd just type without vowels unless there was an aleph or a vav. "shawlawm" is typed "shlom" and becomes "שלום". Shabbath (or however you spell it) becomes "shbth". Would that be too difficult?

6:53 PM
lolwat

@IsaacMoses I... don't know how I feel about that....

@msh210 L O L !

@MoriDoweedhYaa3qob Exactly! You type without vowels, and the script converts it to unvoweled Hebrew.

idk man that seems sketchy

@MoriDoweedhYaa3qob לָלוַט ?

7:05 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaa3qob It might take a few tries to get used to it, but there's nothing more accurate than typing Hebrew in Hebrew, and accuracy is what we're aiming for, right?

but im not typing in hebrew im typing in english
and accurately in english is my way
:)
@IsaacMoses watlol

@MoriDoweedhYaa3qob English that only you understand. @HodofHod is offering to do you a huge favor and make your posts comprehensible to many people who now just skip over your contributions. It's up to you, but I'd urge you to meet him partway.
@IsaacMoses wow, thanks for that! I'd never heard of them before. Good stuff.

@MonicaCellio maimonist understands me :/
hes trying to do the same thing i am doing just with ' and ^ or w/e he is doing

@MoriDoweedhYaa3qob ok. But presumably you want to interact with more people than just him? (Especially since he doesn't tend to come to chat?)

i dont come to chat either only when its a random question

7:11 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaa3qob I can't speak for anybody else, but when I see random punctuation (other than ' and -) or numbers in words I just blip right on past it.
@MoriDoweedhYaa3qob ok. So if it's not important to you, that's fine.

i would stop using numbers and jujst replace the numbers with the letter

The tool would help you on the main site too, where some people also skip over what you writer.
@MoriDoweedhYaa3qob I'm confused. Why not do that now, then?

Ah, a change. Ok, thanks.

@MoriDoweedhYaa3qob To be honest, I kind of skip your Hebrew writing too. It just takes too long for me parse out what you meant. I have to figure out how you would pronounce it, and then how you might spell that pronunciation and then, since I'm not fluent in Hebrew, this is already five minutes.

7:14 PM
so your learning hebrew through my pronunciation :)

"Look, it's possible, through some decoding process that I consider intuitive, to decode a good [question | answer] from this post. If people are too lazy to do the decoding, that's their problem."

@MoriDoweedhYaa3qob But I'm not. Because I gave up. And I learn more Hebrew from my learning in Hebrew.

@HodofHod never give up man
i can give you my vocaroo and you can listen to me pronouncing letters
lol
@IsaacMoses thats what im saying man. is it my fault the people dont want to learn? lol

@MoriDoweedhYaa3qob Listen, I taught myself Yiddish with a dictionary and a Likkutei Sichos. I can do the persistence thing, but this is not a useful skill. I have never seen anybody spell like you do, and even if I will, it will never be important enough for me to spend long periods of time figuring it out.

no but people will pronounce like me and you dont understand it either...

7:18 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaa3qob read it more carefully: he's not agreeing with you.

@MonicaCellio my eyes work for me not the other way around

...vey iz mir

iddish is boring anyway

Du bist mit allemen?

7:21 PM
@HodofHod "I taught myself Yiddish with a dictionary and a Likkutei Sichos." Wow. Nice. From what I've seen represented from them here (especially in Alex's answers), those Sichos are well worth learning a language to get at.

iddish iz nit geshmak obar teimoni ivrith iz
the only problem i have with that recording is my teit. i rushed it and it sounds liek a regular tow

@IsaacMoses They're pretty good. I mostly did the earlier volumes. After a while, I realized there's a distinct theme, a leitmotif, if you will. The Rebbe pushes the importance of seeing the world as being directly, concretely, impacted by our spiritual actions, and learning to put the spiritual first. In the spirit of the holiday "pray and fast first, then go see the king." It's something that I need to keep working on,.
Of course, they've all been translated, but I'm glad I did it in the original.

7:44 PM
...in retrospect, that sounds a lot more boastful than I intended.
