@J.C.Salomon What @YEZ said (flag the question for moderator attention) or ping any moderator here. We're very open to reopening such questions if there's any reason at all (specifically, if you have a new answer) -- we just don't want to reopen them all, since it's laborious (and bumps the questions to the top of the homepage IIRC). [I'm just catching up on backread in the chat now.]
@YEZ As much as anyone else.

@DoubleAA I think they should be, as they don't answer the question asked. (To play the devil's advocate, they do answer it, but the answerer has a very poor sense of humor and thinks of that answer as ptij, and who are we mods to judge? -- But yeah, I think they should be.) Perhaps bring it up on Mi Yodeya Meta.

I rejected my first spam! Go me!

@YEZ congratulations! Was it Hod's answer again?

YEZ
@MonicaCellio I don't know! I was so excited I just clicked reject, and I can't figure out how to go back to it!

@YEZ I just looked -- no, we now have a different post attracting spam edits, yay. Different style from the other, so probably a different source. You can see your own reviews in the "activity" tab on your profile, and you can see all recent reviews by going to the reviews page, clicking on "recent reviews" for the particular queue (suggested edits in this case), and then clicking on "history".
You and BabySeal rejected the same edit (edits take two reviews, unless one is the author or a moderator).

YEZ
I see that now.
he has a more humorous reason for rejecting than me.

@YEZ he does, but choosing the "spam" option provides useful feedback SE, so I encourage y'all to use that when it applies.

Thank you for that adding to your answer. I agree with your conclusion. I will stop doing halacha now, and make up with my father. I will take him out for shrimps at his favorite restaurant in Tel Aviv. Thank you! — Yakov 10 mins ago
Thank you for your comment too. Mister Shalom already convince me to make up with my father and stop doing the halacha. This is a very nice group, thank you everybody! — Yakov 6 mins ago
troll?
I think the question is (perhaps) a valid one, but this guy seems like a troll to me

@Daniel I second your evaluation, and now, with the two sincere attempts to answer his purported question and his obviously ridiculous and ridiculing response in the comments, makes the whole post very misleading for future readers, and I think deleting the whole post would be the wisest course rather than try to salvage a 'potentially useful' question/ answer, as is often favored here.
@Daniel In any case, you have the option of deleting your answer if you wish to disassociate yourself with this apparently false and misleading question.

@GeminiMan I think deleting the post might be a bit heavy-handed
I don't know if deleting the comments is a potentially acceptable thing or not in this instance
@msh210 @MonicaCellio @SethJ ?

@Daniel Sigh. I don't see that the question's deletionworthy.

Q: Link only answers

Gemini ManThere are several examples of link only answers which are as we know deprecated and not very useful for this site. Usually someone comments on the answer requesting a summary of the link, or similar request, but many times this request is not fulfilled by the OP (for whatever reason) and months o...

@msh210 FTR, I agree - I wrote my earlier comment a bit hastily, in response to the OP's ridiculous comments.

3:36 PM
@Daniel I agree with @msh210 that the post isn't delete-worthy (though I can imagine an edit might improve it -- do we need the "he thinks they're parasites" bit or is it enough to say he has a bad opinion?), and that the comments are (were) delete-worthy.

@MonicaCellio "He thinks they're parasites" is a common enough sentiment, expressed in those terms, that I think it serves more to identify the mindset than to insult the religious folk.

@msh210 fair enough.

4:05 PM
@msh210 I don't either. My question was about deleting the trolling comments

@Daniel I know. I was agreeing with you. The sigh was at the asker, not you.

@msh210 How are things Stateside?

@Daniel I don't know. I've never met all these people you speak of. And neither, I suspect, have you. They only exist in words we hear. It is folly to say you know what is happening to other people. Only they know, if they exist. They have their own Universes of their eyes and ears.

4:22 PM
@msh210 fair enough :)

@Daniel (That was a quotation, by the way.)

@msh210 haha it sounded like one to me, so I've already Googled it

@MonicaCellio The question currently at the top of the front page was migrated to here, but something is wrong with the migration - when I click on the question I am taken to the other SE site.

@GeminiMan Are you sure it wasn't migrated from here?

@GeminiMan hm, weird. I assume you're talking about this one, which according to the notice was migrated to C.SE. Usually when that happens the link from our main page redirects there (so you'd land on the C.SE question). Maybe it's caching (caching is a common scapegoat); if it doesn't fix itself in a few minutes I'll ask the SE folks what's up.
I feel like we've had this question before (well, "other wife in the same room", which is close enough), but I can't find it.
@MonicaCellio never mind -- DoubleAA found and linked it.
@GeminiMan followup: the migration was rejected, so it's back to us but now showing as on hold.
One more downvote will get this off the front page. Just sayin'. (I see no delete votes.)

6:32 PM
@MonicaCellio I can't seem to vote for its deletion.
(The -5 one)
Oh, I have to wait 2 days if I'm not a trusted user.
Welp, there're only 9 of those.

@HodofHod Woohoo! My first chance to exercise this particular frachise! Paging @SethJ ...

Yeah, yeah, rub it in ;)
:D

@HodofHod oh, I keep forgetting about that. :-(

@HodofHod Not your fault you're not a single-digit user ID. :) It won't be long for you ...

Eh. I'd have to start being more active again. I don't have the reserve of answers like Alex does to gain reputation without showing up. :D

Q: When is the next shmita year (as of 5772)?

NullWhen is the next shmita year? Is there disagreement about which year? If so, which Jewish sects or traditions believe the shmita is in which years? If you specify years since creation, please also specify the timeline with respect to the Gregorian calendar.

^^^ is Famous, apparently. I wonder why.

Wait, what are we deleting?
Link?

@SethJ this
Yeyasher kochacha to @GeminiMan for earning the Strunk & White badge‌, which is probably the most indicative among the silver badges of effort on behalf of the community.

@Isaac, on what basis (from the perspective of those encouraging deletion)?
I'm not saying I won't support it, I'm just making sure I get the consensus here.
(Get= comprehend, not receive)

@SethJ Well, the point of having multiple people vote is a way of measuring consensus
@SethJ IMO, it's off-topic on its face, so its only value is as a "no this isn't on-topic" marker, which isn't enough to make it worth either absorbing the tzeniut issues or doing the careful editing to ameliorate them

8:03 PM
@SethJ Of course you can't receive a get.

@DoubleAA Are you saying that @SethJ is not a kosher shaliach?

along with the account associated with it...
@MonicaCellio @IsaacMoses The question doesn't deserve being deleted and the answers are of quality. But it will be harder for a pesterer to abuse it if it's deleted.

@YEZ I've protected the question, which prevents 1-rep users from answering. (I note that that answer, now deleted, was from a 1-rep Yakov, different from the 19-rep asker Yakov, which is unregistered.)

YEZ
@MonicaCellio That's why I pointed out account of answer needed deletion.
same user with 2 accounts

@MonicaCellio I have yet to take it up on its offer.

8:43 PM
@YEZ users are actually allowed to have multiple accounts so long as they're not used inappropriately (e.g. voting for each other, or double-voting). So that's not a delete-worthy offense. This duplicate is probably an accident, though.

@YEZ Likely but not proven. Could be someone else playing a joke on the first account.

@DoubleAA and has Seth said publicly where he/she lives?
(Happy Adar, Seth! :-) )

YEZ
@DoubleAA It is Adar after all. But if I understood the deleted-comment drama correctly, there are raglayim ladavar

@YEZ Yes, but from an SE perspective, sharing potentially PII about one account with another requires a very high degree of confidence.

YEZ
@DoubleAA If I knew what PII was, I'm sure I'd agree.

8:50 PM
"Personally identifiable information" (PII), as used in US privacy law and information security, is information that can be used on its own or with other information to identify, contact, or locate a single person, or to identify an individual in context. The abbreviation PII is widely accepted in the US context, but the phrase it abbreviates has four common variants based on personal /personally, and identifiable / identifying. Not all are equivalent, and for legal purposes the effective definitions vary depending on the jurisdiction and the purposes for which the term is being used. (In ...

YEZ
why do some starred comments have filled in stars and some are empty?

@YEZ The empty ones were pinned by a mod/room owner.
I apologize if this was discussed already, but why isn't the revenge question closed as "off-topic-pesak-seeking"?

@IsaacMoses Don't know. When I showed up it had already been seen by most regular users who have close votes, so I figured that choice was deliberate.
(Disclaimer: I haven't followed all the answers/comments/chat about that thread.)

9:06 PM
@DoubleAA (Me neither)

YEZ
@DoubleAA I think there is some phenomenon about not calling 911 that is similar.

@YEZ :) Votes are different from the 911 call, since more than one are required to get a result

Q: Original answers

YEZIf an answer is the conclusion of a user, not overtly sourced, but the sources it is developed from are sourced, is it appropriate/necessary to point out that the conclusion is unsourced?

@YEZ I showed up late. That is when you are there the whole time.

YEZ
@IsaacMoses Well, if you're in DC 911 calls are the same.

9:07 PM
@IsaacMoses TY for your congrats. BTW, I keep reading the first word as 'stunk'.

@DoubleAA (Call me Chusim ben Dan if you want, but SWING!)
IMO, anyone, mod or not, who sees a question post that ends "What should I do?" should, in general, go ahead and click either the "close" button or the "edit" button.

9:22 PM
Chushim, that is.

9:59 PM
@IsaacMoses I'm having trouble following the logic of this. He's concerned that his keeping of halacha might have him stop following halacha?

YEZ
@Garan He is a red herring

@YEZ In what way?

@Garan Please don't ask me to defend this Q. I'm convinced that it's trolling.

@IsaacMoses I'm not asking anyone to defend it. I'm just completely perplexed by it.

YEZ
@Garan You missed the drama, but he posted responses congratulating everyone for convincing him to stop keeping halacha. And a dramatic story about how he just went out with his dad to have shrimp (about 3 hours after the question was asked - I don't think he could act that quickly)

10:01 PM
@YEZ Ah. Not even a rationalization.

YEZ
@Garan not even a real situation, if you ask me.

Being active on several SE sites creates opportunities to share lessons learned and stuff. It's too early to tell, but it's starting to look like The Workplace might base its policy on legal questions on ours. Kudos to whoever wrote our p'sak off-topic reason.

Q: Wanted: A standard way for a site to have a prominent professional advice disclaimer

Isaac MosesI propose that there ought to be a way for the mods of a site to put up a prominent disclaimer that shows up on every page and makes it clear that the site does not offer professional services. For example, on mi.yodeya, the SE 1.0 site that was the starting point for Judaism.SE, the header of e...

@MonicaCellio @IsaacMoses @HodofHod I had a question about private chatrroms. Is it possible to make one that can only be viewed by certain users? I wanted to ask someone a question that I feel would be inappropriate in just a comment/

@BabySeal No yichud on SE!
@BabySeal It's possible for mods to make a chat room that can only be viewed by themselves, SE employees, any other SE mod, and users that they invite. That's the most private option there is.

@IsaacMoses okay I'm just gonna go for it then.

@BabySeal I wasn't joking about "no yichud." I consider this to be a feature.

(I'm not caught up in this room, so if I'm repeating something above please let me know.) All: Someone raised (in a flag) that judaism.stackexchange.com/q/35983 is too explicit for the site. I can see why the flagger thinks so. Does anyone here think it is (or may be) but think that switching it to past-tense ("when people had two wives...") would be any better? (AFAIK no religious Jews nowadays have two wives. Correct me if I'm wrong!)

@msh210 isn't this a dupe?
