Sorry for the briefness, I'm on my phone now. If anyone needs better instructions, I'd be happy to clarify.

12:41 AM
@HodofHod It might be a good idea to open a separate chat room for this

And thanks for helping me debug this!
I suppose once a mod appears we can move all these chats in there.

1:41 AM
@HodofHod done. When you get a chance, I'd welcome Firefox instructions.

1:56 AM
@MonicaCellio Try this: userscripts.org/about/installing

2:16 AM
@HodofHod oh, Greasemonkey! Ok, I know what to do with those. :-)

Dear Everyone: I have written a script that automatically links references to Tanach. It is available here
5
For instructions on how to install it go here
Found a bug? Got a request? Ping me in this chat room.
@first-mod-to-show-up, could you unpin the other two posts and pin the first of these? Better than a bare link, I think.
Thank you, kind person!

5:37 AM
@HodofHod No problem. I'm trying out the script now. (I might fork and extend it for other texts if I get the initiative.)

@JonEricson Please! If you do, you really should take a look at bibref.hebtools.com
I stripped down their spelling tables for this script
You will probably want to use a less altered version of it.

@HodofHod Yeah. I recall that from some meta-post in the past.
@HodofHod And rename the script. ;-)

@JonEricson Nahh....
;)
Isn't Shog9 building you guys one, though?

@HodofHod I thought it was going to be something else...

Q: Would quick-link support for BibleGateway be... useful?

Shog9So... Congratulations on graduating to a full-fledged Stack Exchange site! We'd kinda like to do something special for y'all, and this is currently the top-ranked feature request: Add Markdown and/or OneBox support for BibleGateway That said, oneboxing is troublesome. BibleGateway doesn't offer...

@JonEricson How do you mean?

5:45 AM
@HodofHod That's right. I'm not a huge fan of BibleGateway. I'll certainly use your script when I want to reference Tanach texts.

@JonEricson Yay! Another beta-tester! OOC, why not BG?

@HodofHod It's adtastic. Also, copy-n-paste works better for other sites. (I've got a user script that someone on C.SE wrote a while back, but it's still awkward.)

/pauses ad blocker
Ah, I see.
/unpauses ad blocker
Interesting, their only two "Jewish" bibles are both Messianic.

@HodofHod That too. I wish the JPS if not the NJPS were there. :-(

@HodofHod step 3 for chrome needs to be corrected

@Menachem Got it.

@HodofHod Perhaps post an answer?

1:38 PM
@HodofHod Some of the instructions seem a little more complicated than need be. Why so many spacing options (and restrictions); why not one standard? Why so many numbering options (and uncertainties); why one standard? What's the t flag? Why would a verse number exceed 3 digits? What's the problem that is unlikely to be fixed soon?
@HodofHod Y"K, by the way. You've done an amazing thing (if I can figure out how to use it)!
Incidentally, @mods, are we going to try to standardize references using this tool? It seems like it would be very beneficial, yet very difficult. I can't use it on most of my posts, because I can't install it on my primary device, and my (main) secondary device is my phone.

2:16 PM
@HodofHod very nice! And anyone who was playing with earlier versions should look at the doc again (in particular, "ref:" has changed to something more extensible, yay).
@SethJ initially there was just one way and people asked for more flexibility. The goal here should be to reacognize as many things that people would reasonably type as is practical. We probably want to have one suggestion up front for the "I don't care; just gimme a syntax" crowd. But some people are used to typing text citations in paritular ways; let's tie into that, not try to retrain them.

@DoubleAA We should have that picture automatically be posted here every Friday afternoon :)
@HodofHod Any future plans for links to pages of gemara?

@Daniel I love the idea of machine shmura and all, but I draw the line at blessings. I'd rather get them from a person each week than from a robot!

@IsaacMoses Just wait. Once we're all just brains implanted in robots, you'll be attending weddings with robots and having robot rabbis :)

@SethJ We oughtn't require installation of a tool for people to do the first-class activities on the site (posting Q&A).
@Daniel <Not making a knee-jerk Supreme Court joke>

2:35 PM
@IsaacMoses yeah, what he said. This is a wonderful tool to have available, and -- as with any other improvement -- editors are free to enhance posts (if, say, someone cited but didn't link a source). But it shouldn't be a requirement.

@DoubleAA Also brown rice has more fiber than pearled barley (I assume). Otoh it also has arsenic, apparently. [Just catching up on backread.]
@HodofHod Wow. Thank you!

gabriel, welcome to Mi Yodeya, and thanks very much for posting this question here, since I suspect it comes to many kosher-eating Americans' minds! (I know it has to mine.) I hope you'll look around and find other content here that's to your taste, perhaps including our 278 other questions about kosher. Please consider registering your account, which will give you access to more of the site's features. — Isaac Moses 2 hours ago
@IsaacMoses "to your taste"! Badum bum! :)

@SethJ :) Thanks. That's actually not the first time I've punned in that spot. There was also one time I was sorely tempted to pun, but restrained myself for propriety's sake.
I take that back. I think I found it, and it looks like I did not restrain myself:

Ladies and gentlemen, thoughts on the revision history here?

Q: Is it prohibited to derive benefit from a mixture of milk and meat if the animal was improperly slaughtered?

SAHIs it prohibited to derive benefit from a mixture of milk and meat if the animal was improperly slaughtered? Assume the animal slaughtered, like the milk-giving animal, is kosher, but the slaughter did not meet standards of kashrus. Would one be permitted to derive benefit from the mixture (i.e. ...

Looks like SAH changed the question in response to Shalom's answer.
I'm thinking it should have been asked separately.
May I edit it and recast is as a separate question? (Full disclosure: I intend to answer it.)

@SethJ No, in response to the comments. The answer came after the edits, if I'm reading the timestamps right.

@msh210 Hmm, the answer doesn't give the logic that the paragraph in the question seeks.

@SethJ Oh, the last bit appended to the Q?
I see.

@msh210 "I would also be interested in hearing a presentation/explanation of the Rambam's logic, as it doesn't make much sense to me."

@SethJ Yeah, I think it'd be fair to remove the last sentence from the Q (with an explanatory revision summary).

5:38 PM
@Daniel Eventually, yes.

"… gently, with soft language. He should make sure the fellow knows that he's telling him this only for his own benefit, to bring him to life in the world to come.…" Incidentally, I'm pretty sure Rambam means that the rebuke is meant to bring him to eternal life when he reaches the world to come, not that the rebuke is meant to cause him to reach the world to come sooner.

@SethJ I realized as I was writing it that it could be improved greatly. I'll try to make some things clearer.
@MonicaCellio @SethJ @msh210 Thank you!

@HodofHod here's one simplification for installation:
in Debugging for TanachReferencer, 3 hours ago, by Monica Cellio
@IsaacMoses @HodofHod - if you go to the GitHub page for the JS file (the one that's marked up in HTML) and click the "raw" button, it goes to the plain old JS file. If you already have GreaseMonkey active, then it intercepts that and asks if you want to install it, which is what I did. No download/save/paste necessary (but make sure you have GM first).

@MonicaCellio Thanks! I've put it in.

@HodofHod happy to help. Let others benefit from my bumbling. :-)

6:45 PM
@msh210 Hmm, I'm not convinced that the entire second paragraph belongs. Even if you read the timestamps correctly, the answers seem to totally ignore this paragraph and introduce the idea contained in the paragraph as if it is new. In other words, despite common practice to the contrary, I'm advocating altering the question to fit the answers.

7:07 PM
@SethJ Isn't Shalom's first paragraph answering "Why not?"?

7:19 PM
Congrats to @charleskoppelman, our newest closer/reopener.

7:37 PM
@msh210 Mazal Tov @charleskoppelman. Maybe the Tigers or the Red Sox can use you.
@msh210 Um, I don't really think so.(?) Maybe someone else disagrees (obviously you do; I'm looking for a tie-breaker)? It says that they don't agree; it doesn't say why, though.

sholom 3leicham
@SethJ i saw your question about rambam. and i saw your answer to it.
@SethJ stop talking to yourself :)

A: If I know the answer to a question..............

Isaac MosesStack Exchange is fairly adamant that asking and answering your own question is perfectly fine. As a result, every SE FAQ, including ours, says so in the first section. I would add, though, that people who do this should be very careful to avoid a pitfall that's naturally associated with it: ski...

Also that question was really originally SAH's
On @SethJ broke it off into a separate question

it was a joke
@Daniel why you thnk that dude called me a zionist?
is the qaddish really a zionist prayer?
rofl

7:54 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob I don't know. Kind of a weird thing to bring up anyway
Like he was trying to start an argument

@Daniel i am a jew therefore i must be a zionist
@Daniel age 16
@Daniel no wonder lol
@Daniel 16 year old girl derp

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob I know.

@SethJ you know what

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob I know(knew) that you were joking.

@SethJ that was for @Daniel
@SethJ but good to know you are clear on it too

8:06 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob Well, I saw it, anyway.

@SethJ anta safaradi?

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob clear as the skies in a thunderstorm. ;-)

@SethJ <_<

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob I think I've been pretty clear up till now that I'm not. I just have Sephardi sympathies.

@SethJ i forget :/

8:07 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob 'sall good.

@SethJ you holding like rambam?

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob Exclusively? No.
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob I hold like my rabbi.

@SethJ who would that be?

8:20 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob I mean that, as a general rule, I follow my rabbi's guidance. Who that is can depend on the circumstance, location, and time. I've lived several places, and no longer live where I was raised, so my rabbi of my childhood is no longer my rabbi today.

@SethJ ah i see. well i follow my rabbi too. his name is Abu Imran Musa Bin Maimun

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob Even then I would ask different questions to different rabbis, depending on my relationship with them and what I was comfortable asking them. Sometimes I would ask a rabbi in school, sometimes my Shul rabbi.

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob I know.
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob The problem is that he is no longer available to ask questions.
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob I prefer my rabbis to be available in instances of uncertainty.

@SethJ there is always masoroh of Mori Gafi7
@SethJ and you can call Mori RosSon Arusi

8:22 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob So your rabbi is R' Qafih, not RaMBa"M?

@SethJ no my rabbi is RaMbaM. but if there is a question on what is going on here, i can look into Mori Gafi7 MT and see how teimonim did it
or learned it
@SethJ i dont always agree with Mori Gafi7 but its a good source

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob And how is that any different from what others do?

@SethJ its not RaMbaM they go after ;)

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob What was the RaMBa"M's opinion on a paraplegic person riding a Grama-enabled electric wheelchair on Shabbath in a suburban township with low-traffic within its community 'Eiruv?
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob Or his opinion on breakthrough bleeding caused by a birth-control pill vis a vis Hilchoth Niddah?

@SethJ RaMbaM says its ossur because most modern 3iruvin are unkosher and im pretty sure electricity is not ossur

8:28 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob He wrote that electricity is not Asur?
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob Most, but I gave a specific type of case which is fairly ambiguous in its application.

@SethJ ossur as its fire or not
@SethJ obviously not electricity specifically

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob What about the circuitry?

@SethJ that is a persons "walking" stick. he should be allowed to use it

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob How are you so sure that Rambam would have made that connection?

@Daniel because if rambam says electricity is not ossur and if rambam says using a walking stick is not ossur
@Daniel then you are fine

8:31 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob Does he support R' Schachter or R' Tendler in the Swordfish debate?
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob So you have changed the RaMBa"M's mind?

@SethJ i didnt look into the swordfish thing. what is the problem?
@SethJ i didnt change anyone's mind

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob Whether it is kosher or not because it starts with fins and scales, but loses them

@Daniel or is named specifically in the Gemara?

@Daniel not sure i would need to look at masoroh of those who ate it. and the holocho.

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob Yes, the question is about the halacha
That's what the whole debate is about
some say it's one way, and others say another way

8:34 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob See here: judaism.stackexchange.com/a/16035/5

@Daniel thats why you look at the masoroh of those who ate it

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob See the answer I linked to.

@SethJ also need to see if the swordfish and the fish in that answer are local to israel or bovel

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob But what did Rambam say?

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob There might be uncertainty as to whether what-we-call-swordfish is the same fish the Gemara was talking about.

8:35 PM
We're not asking you to issue psak
we want to know what your rabbi said

@SethJ thats what i am saying. need look at the etymology of the word and if it was in the area of the gamoro

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob I'm asking you which side of this debate your rabbi came down on.
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob You and everybody else.

@SethJ and i said idk because i didnt look inside

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob Understood. But do you see my point?

@SethJ no lol. look inside and you might see it :)

8:37 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob You wouldn't be the first person to look inside, yet there is still a debate
So are you saying that your reasoning skills are better than all of todays rabbonim in determining what the halacha is?

@Daniel thats what rambam says. people's mental capacities are different. also different philosophies and ideologies. i hold by the school of rambams thought process

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob OK, I will spell it out for you. We. Don't. Know. And the only way you can know whether "swordfish" is swordfish, is to rely on either the description of the Gemara or a Mesorah. Because your rabbi is not available to ask.

@SethJ he couldve wrote it down somewhere or mentioned something bout it

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob I thought you hold by what the RaMBa"M wrote.
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob He didn't. Not this.

@SethJ he said if you have a kasha on me look in the rif
@SethJ what did rif right?

8:39 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob Nor did he write about grama-enabled electric wheelchairs. Or hormonal birth control pills.
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob He plagiarized. :-P

@SethJ :(
@SethJ i will stick with my rambam ty

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob Too soon?

@SethJ i dont like you :(

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob My point is that you need a rabbi. A living rabbi. Whom you can ask.
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob I thought we were friends.

@SethJ i dont have to like my friends

8:41 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob Just don't keel me.

@SethJ i will give RaMbaM a call mosSei shabboth and tell him what you think

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob You have a very interesting view of the world

@SethJ in the face
@Daniel yea it is not an ashkenazi world view

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob No, ask him what he thinks. I'm sure he doesn't care about my opinion on birth control.

@SethJ i will be sure to do that. also not sure if he allows birth control unless in a pressing need

8:43 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob That wasn't the question. The question was about Hilchoth Niddah and bleeding caused by hormonal changes stemming from birth control pills.

@SethJ so then you are tamei
:)

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob It's a pretty common question today. I'm sure if he were available to render an opinion he'd have something to say.
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob What if you are wearing black underwear?

@SethJ bleach it

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob That's the exact opposite of what you're supposed to do

@Daniel :P

8:46 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob Anyway, call his cell after Shabbath. Or maybe text him; you never know with the time difference if he'll pick up.

@SethJ no worries, with today's technology i can just teleport to him

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob Would Rambam allow teleportation? I'm actually under the impression that it's controversial

@Daniel what is the problem?

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob I think it's whether the person who emerges on the other side is actually the same person who went in
and if not, is the first person dead?

@Daniel what?

8:51 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob It would depend on how teleportation works, but assuming that the person on the other end is not made of the same atoms as the person who started out, is it the same person?

@Daniel why is it different atoms. it is just that your atoms are being teleported to a different place. but same atoms..

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob My understanding is that actually sending the same atoms somewhere else is more implosible than rebuilding the person out of new atoms at the destination
i don't really know, though

@Daniel lets not get carried away in such hypothetical topics

9:56 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob the guy who's going to call (or text) the Rambam after Shabbat is worried about getting carried away with hypotheticals? Dhoweed, that ship sailed long ago and you were at its helm. :-)

@MonicaCellio :( not nice

Lol
That is all

@msh210 Thanks. I promise to use my powers for good and not evil.
@SethJ ha!!

10:11 PM
@CharlesKoppelman congratulations!

10:35 PM
@MoriDoweedhYaAgob I am sorry that my wording upset you. Still, I ask you to consider your words here; do you see what in the things you wrote today would give people the impression that you claim to be better than any living rabbi(s) because you know exactly what the Rambam would say on questions that were never brought to him? "Make for yourself a rav" means one you can actually interact with. Between this & your claims about "the" right way, I struggle to take you seriously. That makes me unhappy.

@MonicaCellio i am not upset. i did not take your words to heart. my words that were to @SethJ were received well same with @daniel. both understand what i was claiming. i will still with my RaMbaM :)

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob I wish you would take my words to heart, at least long enough to think about them. I think the impression you give (pretty consistently to my mind) is perhaps not the one you want to give, and I hope you'll think about how you want people to see you and what you might need to do differently to bring that about.

@MonicaCellio everyone already knows how i feel bout things

@MoriDoweedhYaAgob everyone who has already interacted with you. The world's a big place. Mi Yodeya's a small place but we get new users all the time. I'm asking you to think about future interactions, is all. And I'm not trying to cause distress, so I suspect I should shut up now. Shabbat shalom.

@MonicaCellio i dont thnk anyone cares fro what i have to say. shabboth sholom
