jrg
jrg
I doubt I have it.
@izx LOL
Anyone can help me with Huawei e353 ?
and ixconn
jrg
jrg
13:57
I don't have one, sorry.
izx
izx
Sorry, no...
@jrg do you have option.c
i need them
file in Ubuntu
jrg
jrg
@BigGenius not for the kernel.
izx
izx
/root/src/linux-3.2.0/drivers/usb/serial/option.c
apt-get source linux-image-$(uname -r)
should do the trick
13:58
located here
/lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/kernel/drivers/usb/serial
izx
izx
IIRC apt-get install linux-source should also work
for some reason i can't download it
@izx Hey thanks for the comment on Debian unstable being actually stable, I just moded my answer :) - askubuntu.com/a/175728/18887
izx
izx
@BigGenius Those are headers, your thing wants the source for some reason...
i need only that,
@izx thanks for your efforts
jrg
jrg
13:59
i'm on quantal, not precise so anything I give you would likely break your computer.
izx
izx
@nitstorm Thanks nit, comments purged :)
@BigGenius What is the output of uname -a?
@izx Thank you, otherwise I wouldn't have known that Debian unstable was actually stable :D
jrg
jrg
@nitstorm debian in general is rock solid.
How do you guys Backup Ubuntu install ?
jrg
jrg
debian sid is evil on the other hand. :)
izx
izx
14:01
@nitstorm Well, it's not universally unstable, but Debian has way stricter standards for stability than Ubuntu
@izx Cool :)
@jrg Cool :) Good to know :)
@BigGenius To backup, just create a copy with dd.
izx
izx
In general, if an Ubuntu user's only option is to install something from Debian unstable, that's not a bad idea; on the other hand, if you are running Debian Stable, it is probably a very bad idea :)

izx
izx
@BigGenius: do you want that option.c or not? Output of uname -a please
14:03
yes
I want it
@BigGenius Yes. It's a command-line utility for making bit-perfect disk copies.
@izx I see....
izx
izx
Otherwise you can find just that file on the kernel.org gitweb
Linux hacbook 3.2.0-23-generic-pae #36-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 10 22:19:09 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
@BigGenius You need to give the output of uname -r.
izx
izx
14:03
Thanks
@ObsessiveFOSS Do we have any alternative to Mobile Partner Software On Linux?
Hello all
I am unable to send USSD commands to my modem,
hello @AmithKK
izx
izx
@BigGenius Here's the direct link, and here's the tree
14:05
Neither i am able to receive messages
Heya @nitstorm
izx
izx
Hello @AmithKK
@izx Heya
izx
izx
How you doin' @AmithKK
@izx Thanks
you saved my live
life*
14:06
@BigGenius There are so many problems trying to get Huawei running... You may want to wait until Quantal comes out.
Quantal will Fix that?
It is detected as Bus 002 Device 007: ID 12d1:1506 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E398 LTE/UMTS/GSM Modem/Networkcard
USB 3g Dongle
I think it is better in Quantal.
@izx Also Captcha's are a headache
This is my modem
Its not working,
It is connected to internet
but no USSD using At commands
I have never used such a modem.
14:10
hmm
@AmithKK nods in agreement
Anyway , what's the best way to backup my Ubunt
jrg

A: How many retags should you do before asking a moderator?

Bill the LizardI'd say at whatever point posting the request here on meta becomes less work than manually retagging the posts. Somewhere around 10 but less than 20 is my rough guesstimate. Any more than that would definitely draw complaints that the tag was being spammed (which I know from past experience).

on 8gb pendrive?
@BigGenius Again, dd.
Is your installation greater than 8GB?
14:11
but , what's DD?
no
izx
izx
If China ever decides to go to war with India again, they will win courtesy all these damned Huawei network devices ;)
its only 5gb
Is the partition 5 GB?
Or the amount of data?
no its 100gb
amount of data is 5gb
You don't have a 100GB or bigger external hard disk lying around?
jrg
jrg
14:13
rsync. rsync rsync rsync
3
partion
amount of data is 5gb
no i don't have anything more than 8gb
i can make a 100gb partion on my hardrive again
On an external hard drive.
No , i have internal hardrive
izx
izx
@ObsessiveFOSS: it may be time for one of your custom one-on-one chat rooms :)
i dont have anything more,
Is this new Feature?
@izx?
14:17
o/
izx
izx
\o
@BigGenius It's been around.

14:20

MOre to come here in a moment.
Tell me, How to Backup it
i am student, but
ubuntu Breaks sometimes
and i don't have any good backup solution
is there anything i can do?
jrg
jrg
14:21
45 messages moved from Ask Ubuntu General Room
So, what are you specifically trying to accomplish? Backup your home folder, or all system data?
everything
jrg
jrg
Ok, should be set for you guys.
coz most of time, my ubuntu fails to boot
then i can't even login to it
and losse all data
i dont want to reinstall everything that i have on my intalltion
14:22
Why is backing up helpful for a boot failure? A backup would need to be through dd to keep a boot sector, and you need a 100GB drive to put it on.
Anyway, you can copy your work from a live CD or keep it on a flash drive all the time.
when boot will fail
i will restore it
You can't boot from a backup.
izx
izx
Thanks @jrg
and it will run again?
No i mean, like
i installed something
izx
izx
@BigGenius: just use CloneZilla to make a bootable backup that will use EVEN less than 5 GB of space
14:23
Again, you cannot boot from a backup unless it's made with dd.
if i had backup
that broke my system
izx
izx
If anything goes wrong
I cannot understand you at all.
izx
izx
restore the Clonezilla backup
How does a backup break your system?
izx
izx
14:24
and you're good to go
installed some "Crap "
Broke my system
Then don't install "crap".
izx
izx
Hello all @AmithKK
14:24
Hello all.
and unable to login
unable to boot
izx
izx
@BigGenius Then you restore the damn Clonezilla backup (it runs from its own liveCD!)
You don't nned to restore from a backup. You can fix your system from a live CD and copy files off your broken system.
izx
izx
and go back to work!
14:25
What?
but i need thoes software also
how will it save them?
izx
izx
@BigGenius: and when that happens, just Skype @ObsessiveFOSS and he will personally guide you through fixing your broken system from a LiveCD.
@izx i will try that, thanks for help
What software? I'm confused as to what you are trying to say?
obessive
14:26
@izx How do you know my Skype? It's not ObsessiveFOSS.
or something?
What software(specifically) are you trying to save?
can you post you skype
DO NOT SKYPE ME
2
okay, Gtalk?
14:27
No.
Ask on the site.
I do not use any form if instant messaging other than AskUbuntu chat.
oh
Okay, i am have installed Codeblocks, Chrome, Sublime text 2, Printer Sasmsung scx 32001g
Again, explain clearly what software you need to be in the backup.
i dont want to do it over, incase of Boot Failure
14:28
And why do you need said software?
They are need for my University work
needed*
Then just make a bit-perfect copy.
Use dd.
how?
what;s DD ?
or Pendrive?
It needs 100GB, as does CloneZilla
can i do it on local disk?
ok
14:31
No. Needs to be another boot device.
An external hard disk is like 70-100 dollars...
ok
it can't be done on like Local Partition?
It can be done, but it's a pain to restore.
ok
i will try to do it from CLoud
What do you mean, "Cloud"?
amazon s3
or similar service
thanks
14:34
Useless for 100GB to copy. I doubt you have sufficient network bandwidth.
Here. Download sourceforge.net/projects/clonezilla/files/latest/… and burn it onto a CD.
okay
it worsk like norton Ghost?
to restore Drive?
Then boot from it and use it to copy your Linux partition to your other local partition.
command?
Yes, it's like Norton Ghost but it backs up partitions, niot drives.
Username: user
Password: live
ok
so i backup it to DVD?
14:37
No. Not enough space on a DVD if your partition is 100GB. Follow instructions: clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live-doc.php
thanks
Phew!!!
@ObsessiveFOSS I appreciate your patience, watching from the sidelines and I was growing impatient!
Finally!
@nitstorm What?
YAY @ObsessiveFOSS :D
@ObsessiveFOSS You were patiently answering all his questions...
D: (Turn your head the other way)
14:40
lol :P
Seriously though, was like watching a ping-pong match :P
@nitstorm Olympic ping-pong, or ping-pong?
@ObsessiveFOSS Olympic ping-pong - China vs. Korea (or some two asian countries), with players couple of feet away from the table
:P
