In general, if an Ubuntu user's only option is to install something from Debian unstable, that's not a bad idea; on the other hand, if you are running Debian Stable, it is probably a very bad idea :)

A: How many retags should you do before asking a moderator?

I'd say at whatever point posting the request here on meta becomes less work than manually retagging the posts. Somewhere around 10 but less than 20 is my rough guesstimate. Any more than that would definitely draw complaints that the tag was being spammed (which I know from past experience).

Why is backing up helpful for a boot failure? A backup would need to be through dd to keep a boot sector, and you need a 100GB drive to put it on.

Anyway, you can copy your work from a live CD or keep it on a flash drive all the time.

You don't nned to restore from a backup. You can fix your system from a live CD and copy files off your broken system.
