@PythonMaster none of the nominees, by definition, has moderated yet. But they may have different levels of participation in the review tools, which are similar but not the same as the mod tools.
On the nominee page, you can see, next to the nominees name, some other quantitative information relevant to how active that nominee has been on the review queue. # of editing tags, # of accepted flags, etc.
Note that quality of answers/rep isn't a necessary quality being enthusiastic about English does help though. On top of review activity, I'd say the most relevant though is level headedness.

Mari-Lou A for moderator! Of all the people who got after me for doing stupid things she was the nicest.

@Mitch Existing or past diamond moderators can self-nominate for re-election.

Hello, friends. I think it's nice to participate, although the chances of me winning are slim. I have therefore nominated myself. Hope that I have been helpful to the community so far and a diamond badge would help me help the community more. I hope I have the support from you guys. :)

@WBT OK. Remove 'by definition'
13:36
@WBT We don't get re-elected, but we can be elected as moderator on an additional site.

I'm thinking of nominating. Is it enough to want to help build community, or is it a 'you can do that without being a mod' thing? I'm happy to help with the flag queues, but I don't have any grand plans to overhaul the site (not that that's a criterion for being a mod).
14:52
Wanting to help build a community is enough. You can also do that without being a mod.
Flag queues is only part of the work. There's a lot of policy and networking kinds of background stuff, and of course, warnings and suspensions.
Good thing about moderator elections, the review queues are almost cleared.
Bad thing about elections tons of trolls being really active...
This has been the calmest election I've seen so far. Although there is still plenty of time.
@Lawrence I think you do not need to reinvent the wheel to be good moderator
Don't jinx it @KitZ.Fox ;)
@Helmar Good :) . As a site that's been up for several years now, it has had the benefit of numerous changes over time. Not set in stone, but also not pioneer work, either.
@KitZ.Fox I'm happy to help with policy, but I'm not very good at networking. Work involving warnings and suspensions I understand come with the territory.
15:11
Can we nominate others? People like John Lawler, Edwin Ashworth, StoneyB, and FumbleFingers come to mind immediately. I'm sure I will think of others too modest to nominate themselves as well. We have many helpful, erudite, kind and generous community members who might be willing to moderate.
No. you can only nominate yourself
@MarkHubbard It's not possible for a good reason. Only the persons themselves can decide if they want to invest the additional time. Community members of the activity grade you describe are most certainly aware of the elections.
@MarkHubbard You can, however, post names - as you have done - together with some notes about why each would make a good moderator.
16:03
@KitZ.Fox Also, the all-night parties, and secret break room with snacks.
@Mitch Is there a cake?
16:20
The cake is a lie.
The pie is a fake.
@MarkHubbard You could always post on Meta.

@Mitch ftfy
Hooray!
As I may have mentioned, I'm looked up in a 12-hour a day conference in Pittsburgh till Friday. Didn't have time to write something up till now.
So glad you made it before the deadline.
It's a week or a day?
A week, I think.
I didn't run that thing that calculates one’s um, canditatoriality beforehand. I didn’t even realize I’d maxed out the metrics.
I checked mine. I'm at 35/40.
17:45
I don't have Illustrator, so figured I wouldn't have max badges, but I did. Maybe that old Taxonomist was worth something after all. :)
I suppose I should brush up my mod badges. I'll never qualify for Marshall though, so you'll always have me beat.
Oh right, I'm in Eastern Early Time now so you're still awake.
And it's not even tea time yet.
Yo quiero Café Bell.
Stupid hotel coffee has no oomph.
That's Object Oriented Miles Per Hour.

haha

@tchrist you exercised the nuclear option

What actually triggered this election? Workload, time passing?
Workload.
20:57
@KitZ.Fox It's pronounced tay-uh-timmy.
21:19
@MετάEd Good to see your hat in the ring.
