Q: PC on bootloop cannot access BIOS

Dr.CodeI bought a new SSD today installed a fresh copy of Windows 10 on it and all the software I regularly use (Android studio, Netbeans, etc). I used the PC for about 2 hours and decided to set the boot priority to the new SSD (note: my old hard disk was disconnected since the new SSD was installed) a...

Is there a disk in the dvd drive?
Nope, I just checked. It's empty.
The fact that replacing the SSD with the old HDD leads to me believe something may have been misplaced/dislodged/damaged in the process of installing the SSD. Check and make sure all connections are secure, no exposed metal making contact with bare components, etc.
Also, did you ground yourself protecting from ESD?
Yes @ ESD protection
I just checked all connectors and tightly seated them to make sure. I hear a roar in the fans when I switch it on, like an alternation from low to high rpm. Could it be power related?
Did the 100% fan spinup not usually occur? A lot of computers do a second or two full spin-up to get the fans going as lower RPM values sometimes do not provide enough kinetic energy to get the fan spinning from a dead stop
18:13
It did but this feels like it happens a bit too often than I'm used to
Normally its like a increment from dead stop to spinning
Do you have another machine you can test individual components with?
Unfortunately no
Have you tried unplugging all storage drives and trying to boot?
Is it possible to corrupt bios from a simple boot priority setup though?
Generally no, that's a pretty standard procedure for even 15 year old bios
18:16
I did not try that, what should I expect from that? I'll try it
OK I tried booting without a storage device, same result sadly
At this point I'm trying to remove possible points of failure. Storage isn't required to get to BIOS
Do you have any thumb drives plugged in?
No sir, only mouse and keyboard for USB ports atm
Do you get any POST beep codes?
Will I hear beeps if I plugin my headset?
No it should use a small speaker built into the motherboard
18:27
Oh then no
How many times would you say you've rebooted and gotten the same result (boot > 3 seconds black screen > reboot)
I should also mention a crucial part I forgot to add. Before the bootloop problem I got an error after setting boot priority to SSD saying to "press key to boot from drive" without loading the OS. Then I went to bios and reset bios to defaults.after that only I faced this issue
Sometimes it holds up to 5s and then reboot, sometimes switches off as soon as I press power button
I tried more than 10 times now I'm afraid to continue it cause it might affect hardware
I tried again and it showed the gigabyte bios splash screen, I immediately spammed del button which took me to a dark blue empty screen with a title "Gigabyte :dual UEFI BIOS" and PC turned off in 2s afterwards
Take a look at this thread: tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1736983/…
Sounds like a similar issue to what you're experiencing
18:42
Interesting, will try it and report back. Thank you very much for your interest
Omg
Good news?
Tried that method now its updating main bios
That sounds like good news
LIFE SAVER
I cannot thank you enough good man
OK I chooses load optimized bios
Haha glad I could help :)
18:54
Now its asking to select proper boot device
You did manage to install windows on the ssd, right?
Yeah
SSD is connected btw
How should I proceed
Go ahead and make the SSD the primary boot device
Selected SSD but same message
What message is that?
18:57
Do you think windows might have been wiped?
Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device And press any key
That's the message
Yeah it looks like it isn't recognizing your windows install.
I got USB windows installer in a pen drive
Still have that windows bootable thumb?
Yeah
So at this point you can successfully enter bios?
19:00
Yes sir
Can you set removable media/USB to be a higher boot priority than the ssd?
Sure
That'd be the trick to getting that to work
It's generally a safe idea to make usb/dvd a higher priorty boot drive than your typical OS drive because of this, it just gets a little dicey when you regularly keep a disk or usb drive in the machine
Aw man I suddenly went to the windows automatic repair
SSD is fast passes bios in split second
Yeah a lot of modern mobos have a setting to extend the splash screen just for this reason
19:03
Somehow it recognized windows this time
From the SSD or from the thumb?
Did it boot normally or into recovery mode?
I think recovery, I have adcaned options and restart
Advanced*
As options
Pull out the thumb drive and hit restart
And tell me if it boots normally
19:06
Thumb drive was out all along
Restarted once and still goes to this
What kind of things do you see under advanced options?
Continue (exit and continue to windows), use a USB drive or windows recovery DVD, troubleshoot and turn off pc
What do you suggest?
Plug in the thumb drive then pick the recovery option
Damn boot loop started again
:(
19:13
I'm gonna try again
Could it be that the windows image on the thumb drive was corrupted?
Not sure but I used to it on my last hard disk too
Worked fine
OK updating bios again
Try plugging in the old HDD and flashing the bios
19:16
Could tell me the bios key, so I can try to boot from usb
Is it f12?
Usually f9/f10/delete
Alright
I'd say most common is f9, then delete
Ok
Got into bios
It shows two variations of my ssd as UEFI and sata
And USB also as uefi
Shall I set USB as #1?
Yeah set USB as #1
19:22
OK now got into windows installation
Clean install yeah?
Setup is running
After this I'll create a new USB installer and install again since you mentioned about a corrupt setup
Just to be on the safe side
BTW after installing is it OK to keep USB as priority 1? Cuz I run wanna go back to bios again lol
Don't*
I really appreciate your guidance and kindness!! Thank you very much !! N
:)
If you don't normally keep a USB drive plugged in it is not a bad idea
Ok
Windows installation completed
Do you recommend another install from another windows setup or keep this?
If it is working for you as intended you're probably fine to keep it
It might not be a bad idea to buy a new 4gb thumb drive and put a brand new windows iso on it
Okay
19:37
If you have a microcenter nearby you can get them for like $3
Will do :)
Man I owe you a keg of beer haha
19:49
Haha well it'd be put to good use, I promise :)
Haha
