Thanks for creating the room, how did you manage to do it?

Maybe I have some special privileges due to being a mod on Computer Graphics SE.

5:12 PM
Hello folks. @kenorb is on fire with his qns :D Good going!

HELLO! I am new to this site.

@Qlstudio Aren't all of us? :D

5:31 PM
yeah... Check out my new question, ai.stackexchange.com/questions/99/…
You can't earn or lose reputation from chat, can you?

@Qlstudio no :-)

good.

however, your question probably needs a bunch of work - it's very broad, and doesn't currently require AI

I was thinking of posting a one thousand character post but I was like no... that would be spamming

we already have good voice recognition in various products (I see them in the security industry) and almost none have any connection with AI
so you could have many answers to various versions of what that question could mean

5:36 PM
That's definitely a very broad question, too broad I think

well how come people are still using images and sound to check if it's not a robot?

@Qlstudio that would be a useful start to narrowing the question.
that is only one tiny use case for voice recognition
And captchas typically aren't used to identify people, just to demonstrate non automation

I Well, I edited my post,
voted to close my own post

Well, I tried to start something around legal issues w.r.t. AI, but that didn't go so well. I hope others will pose some questions related to that though, as it's an interesting topic. And it's not implementation! :-)

It is interesting indeed. I think your question would survive if it didn't ask for external resources - those kind of questions are less than ideal for private beta sites (we want our site to have as much knowledge as possible, rather than compiling a list of existing resources)

5:47 PM
any other downvotes??
Oh well. I guess not

That's quibbling over minutia if I've ever seen it, but I'm not opposed to editing out that part of the question. It's silly, since it's only a small part of the larger question, but whatever.

@mindcrime I haven't voted on that one, but it's a list question and they are not generally a good fit for SE

Well, that's the "party line" anyway. :-)
Everything is a list when you think about it. Lisp wins in the end! :-)

I think if the question can have a valid single answer, then it's much easier to argue it can fit. A question asking "who is doing X" could have a thousand different answers

6:00 PM
@mindcrime Heh, well, if we want a successful SE site, I think it's best to follow the SE guidelines :)

@RoryAlsop: yeah, consider it a philosophical difference. I think the whole SE thing about "have one objectively right answer" is not always applicable. Over zealous fixation on stock "rules" like that is harmful to SE sites.

Weirdly enough, your user profile link in chat here goes to Shog9's account page

Q: Should we be *extremely* slow to CLOSE questions?

mindcrimeI think the answer is "yes". To the user asking a question, closing it feels like a very hostile action and makes the site seem unfriendly and not welcoming. My feeling is that marginal questions should not be closed explicitly, but should simply remain open but voted to an appropriate score (i...

Q: Is this OK to ask questions that have been asked before on local artificial intelligence forums?

sepidehAs you might know sites remain in private beta for three weeks: We've extended the private betas to last about three weeks total. Usually new communities are concerned that we didn't give them enough time. And I think in this three weeks, the core users should try their best to enrich th...

Q: Should we discourage answers that say AI can't be smarter than its creator?

zavtraI'm seeing a lot of answers from people along the lines of "AI is just bits and bytes and ultimately cannot be smarter than its creator because its creator would have to use their brain to make something smarter than themselves, which isn't possible." It's kind of baffling to me to see these ans...

Q: Do we want easy technical questions?

LuisI was clicking around and wanted to post a question. Started doing research to be able to ask an interesting one that I have in mind, and, well: Avoid “easy” questions It’s tempting to start with easy, superficial questions: surveys, polls, and rudimentary questions like “what are some g...

Q: Should the [deep-network] tag be replaced by [deep-learning]?

zergylordThe latter is the canonical way to refer to the field, and its unclear when, if ever, [deep-network] would be preferable. Its a small change, but it'd help avoid very odd sounding questions like "What is Deep Network?"

IMO anyway. I think their fixation on rigid rules is largely to blame for the failure of the previous ai.se attempts. OTOH, at least one of the previous ones was actually going pretty well, albeit slightly below their required level of traffic and so it got nixed. Depressing. :-(

@mindcrime you saw the updated rules for site life and graduation, yes?
makes it simpler for a site to keep going

6:04 PM
Not sure if I have or not. Last time I was really active in an Area 51 site was probably the last ai.se site attempt I took part in a couple of years ago. TBH, it left a bad taste in my mouth and I haven't been very active since (until now).
I'll take a look though.

trying to find the link
basically a site that maybe hasn't grown enough to graduate, but is still getting traffic (albeit less than needed) will not be closed

Q: Graduation, site closure, and a clearer outlook on the health of SE sites

AnaBack in April of 2010, Joel shared our assumptions about the role of small sites in the newly minted Stack Exchange network: If a site does not have enough activity at the end of 90 days, it will be closed down. Any existing Q&A will be archived and made available for download, but the site...

thanks @BenN - faster searching than me :-)

That's good news. I definitely think that's a better policy than setting an arbitrary deadline to achieve a certain level of traffic. I think the old ai.se would have survived had those rules been in place at the time. :-)
Makes me feel better about the potential for this site. I am worried though about the whole issue of figuring out exactly what's on-topic and what isn't, given the crossover with datascience and stats. But I guess we'll figure it out.

I have good hope for this site :)

6:15 PM
I think there is learning from the previous ones, so hopefully the on and offtopic line should be simpler to define

Q: Can we send messages to young researchers who have recently published papers in artificial intelligence related journals during the private beta?

sepidehDuring the private beta we have the opportunity to send Emails via stack exchange: And because stackexchange is already well-known on the net, it is more probable that our invitation will be read and clicked on. And I don't think there would be any academic mail server which rejects mail sent by...

Q: Should questions about the Semantic Web be considered on-topic?

mindcrimeSemWeb is a broad topic, obviously, but there are definitely elements of AI involved. Generally speaking, should we welcome SemWeb questions?

Q: What's the best use of the [agi] tag?

DynrepsysI asked a question that was meant to discuss artificial intelligence in general. I tagged it [artificial-intelligence], and someone fairly pointed out that that's redundant. I changed it to [agi], because the question referred specifically to how [optimization] applies to artificial intelligence,...

Q: How do we manage off-topic flags?

LuisApparently, we cannot flag a question as belonging to other network during beta: What is the recommended way to go in these situations?

6:56 PM
Should we rename our chatbots? Retrocomputing has "Annoying Robot", can we top it? :-)

Q: Are questions about specific tasks and areas of research which use AI techniques on topic?

Inquisitive LurkerFrom what I've seen so far, most of the questions on the site currently seem to be either about AI in general or about common techniques and algorithms. What about more specialized topics? Can people ask questions about e.g. the basic principles of computer vision or speech recognition? Both of...

I made an advert for the site a while ago. (It's not very good, and will probably only be understood by regulars in The Nineteenth Byte.) Anyone want to see it?

post it

@kenorb The problem was my "adblock" program.

7:14 PM
What do we think about this question in terms of on-topic vs. not?

8:01 PM
What the...??? Robots like butter?

@Qlstudio There is a reason why @wizzwizz4 said that it would probably only be understood by regulars in The Nineteenth Byte...

Q: Can we have LaTeX formatting support?

rcpintoI was going to answer a question about reinforcement learning and wanted to show some formulas using the same notation I use on CrossValidated, for instance: $r_{t+1}+\gamma \max_a Q(s_{t+1},a)$ But it is currently not supported, at least the way I tried it. Can we have support for LaTeX format...

What do you think we should call our chatbots?

Should we take it to meta?

8:34 PM
@BenN Taken it to meta. Should appear in 5... 4... 3... 2... 1...

8:47 PM
I posted the best I can come up with at the moment

Ah, I see. I had assumed there was no account because it didn't show. My bad, I'll edit my answer

@BenN It's fine. I have magical fun-police powers, so can see these things in my quest to squash fun across the network.

Heh, I went to the Feeds tab of this room and I can see it now too

Q: What should we name our chatrroom?

wizzwizz4We have a chatroom. At the moment it doesn't really have a name. Other sites' chatroom names include: Super User's "Root Access" PPCG's "The Nineteenth Byte" Blender's "The Renderfarm" Pets' "The Litterbox" Travel's "You Are Here" Aviation's "The Hangar" So, what should we call ours? While w...

Q: What kind of experts are we trying to attract?

bpachevA core goal of the private beta is to generate high-quality content that will attract experts. We are also given the opportunity to invite experts by email to the private beta. My question is simple: exactly what kind of experts are we trying to attract? According to this question , data scienc...

Hi there!

Hi!

So many questions. I shall limit myself to two or three answers a day, the procrastination potential is too much
