Q: Why can I boot Windows only with grub2 chainloader?

ChiyouWhen I updated my dual boot (Windows and Linux) PC my grub menu.lst file was deleted and I could no longer boot into Windows or Linux. Finally I have succeeded in installing grub2 and I can boot both OSs but I cannot repair my Windows OS with the recovery console. I've still some problems with...

Pault: I can boot booth OS but I need grub2 to boot Windows? What if I doesn't want Linux anymore? What if my Linux get corrupted? I've tried to boot from my Windows to no avail? Btw. After an update of Linux this happens exactly to me.
Paul: I don't understand? I got problem to boot at all my OS. Now I'm wondering why I can't boot with Windows Recovery my PC and only with chainloader? Do this sound weird?
Paul: I boot both OS but only with Grub and Grub Chainloader???? I want to boot my Windows with the Windows Bootloader only??? How is this complicated to understand?
I don't want to remove grub. I want to know in case my next update of opensuse destroys the grub again so I've the option to boot into Windows. In my title I've asked exactly this?? Seriously what has this do with grub and my pc and how I boot my os?
Can you run chkdsk? If so, what does it say the format is?
Paul: Sure I can. I have 2 hard disk. 1 has Windows and 1 has Linux? Serious, dude, you cannot give up to help me?
soandos: chkdsk works. I'm not sure but I think it says NTFS. I'm not sure about the chainloader but is this thing not starting the original Windows bootloader? So the original Windows bootloader must be somewhere?
@Chiyou, if chkdsk works, then the formatting for the drive is also good, and so what is the error with bootsec?
@soandos: It says Windows cannot detect the filesystem??

How are you running the command?
I boot into recovery console. Then I change the disk either C: or D: then I run chkdsk /F or /R.
what drive is the windows partition on?
and what drive are you booting from?
(as far as BIOS is concerned)
are we chatting?
Yes... (if you want to...)
Windows is on drive 3 of 3
Linux on drive 1 of 3
If I remember right I have grub on drive 1 and 3
but drive 1 is where I boot from
the linux drive?
00:13
What happens if you boot from drive three?
there is my grub2
it says no operating system
ok, one min, looking up syntax
try
bootsect /nt60 drivethree /force /mbr
hmm
do i need to change the drive when I want to run chkdsk?
no...
you should be doing
chkdsk driveletter /f /r /v
so that is where you pick the drive
ok
what about the chainloader
00:19
If the grub2 that you care about is on drive 1
how can it load windows with a bootlooader?
you can nuke the one on drive 3...
yeah
but why can it load windows now?
its pointing to the right folder?
when I boot from drive 3 I get either grub file not found error or no operating system?
what do you mean?
00:20
what is the drive letter for drive 3?
type this:
bootsect /n60 c:
or bootsect /n52 c:
Can I type when I'm in Windows?
I can open a command shell?
if you are in windows already, then use EasyBCD
download and run
What is EasyBCD?
00:22
Its a nice program that deals with these issues
I see.
but it doesn't fix my grub2 problem?
It might, just look through the options. It can edit grub2 things
it says the boot conifguration data store could not be opend. Woul you like to manually load a BCD registry for EasyBCD to manage?
@Chiyou play around with it
i clicked yes but nothing happens.
it's all empty
ok. thanks
i will try this bootsec in recovery console
maybe I can fix my windows problem
but do you know why grub2 doesnt start with a menu?
I've opensuse 12.2?
00:30
Not my cuppa tea, sorry
ok. thanks
good night :)
@Chiyou let me know what happens
yes
but I can't make it now
It's my work pc
I don't want to play to much
I already spend whole weekind
with this opensuse update
and ahci mode
i'm lucky i can currently boot into my pc
althouth it's not very comfortable
shrug
pc is a mystery
not a science
good night, sir?
