lrbox is a LR (horizontal) box so can't have display constructs like listing unless you wrap them in a minipage but also listings is a verbatim environment so can't be used in a \newcommand. the listings package has some definition forms to defime environments thats exactly what the the first part of werner's answer says, that you can not use \newcommand
01:18
Hurm. I've made a figure in LaTeX and I'm not sure the best way to turn it into a standalone file
I could just copy and paste it into a graphics program, but then it won't be vector anymore
But I have no idea how to make it into a PDF with a set size and all that
Would the best way to be make one file per figure and then just use geometry to make the page the right size?

5 hours later…
06:48
@Canageek the standalone class is supposed to do just that... Have you tried it?

1 hour later…
07:51
@daleif both your experiments reached the list
@DavidCarlisle After I released them
@JosephWright I did wonder
08:43
@JosephWright I'm trying to create choice keys which expand their values first. This here works but gives the "wrong" error message if an unknown key is used. Can one improve this?
\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
\ExplSyntaxOn
\keys_define:nn {my}{
 key   .code:n = \exp_args:Nnx \keys_set:nn{my}{__key=#1},
 __key .choice: ,
 __key / choicea .code:n = A
}
\newcommand\testA {choicea}
\keys_set:nn {my} { key = choicea}
\keys_set:nn {my} { key = \testA}
\keys_set:nn {my} { key = blub}
\ExplSyntaxOff

\end{document}
@UlrikeFischer At present that's the best way; I could add .meta:x and .meta:nx if it would help
@UlrikeFischer You'd like something like \.choice_x:?
@JosephWright that sounds quite good. Imho the ability to store a choice in a macro is useful both on user and code level.
@UlrikeFischer OK, could you log an issue so I don't forget? I'll probably do the xparse stuff first, then some l3build things for @PabloGonzálezL
@JosephWright done.
08:56
@UlrikeFischer Thanks
For TL pretex, I should rsync?
@PauloCereda you can. I simply installed it directly.
@UlrikeFischer with tl-install?
@PauloCereda I just did a network install (wasn't sure I had space to rsync the the server then do an install from there)
@DavidCarlisle oh
09:03
@PauloCereda yes get the tar.gz from the telnet pretest mirror unpack that and run the install script specifying the mirror used as --repository seemed to work (even under wsl:-)
@PauloCereda I used install-tl-windows.bat -repository location -gui, checked the pathes and settings and started. It worked fine. On my laptop I even interrupted the wlan just before the end as we had to go, and it simply continued later when I was online again.
@UlrikeFischer cool!
@DavidCarlisle Dankeschon!
@TeXnician Gitter is down for me... :(
@PauloCereda Eu percebo patos não entendem de tecnologia
@DavidCarlisle chocolate é muito bom :)
@PauloCereda mas venenoso para patos
09:16
@DavidCarlisle This sounds a bit funny, as venenoso is typically used in other contexts. Cannot think of a different word though... :)
@PauloCereda naturally you can't think of a word because my Portuguese is much better than yours!
@DavidCarlisle ooh
> The pretest build runs nightly, ending by 4am Paris time unless something goes wrong. The mirror hosts should all be up to date within a few hours after that.
Why Paris time? :)
@PauloCereda what could be more romantic than building a tlnet pretest in Paris in the Spring?
7
@DavidCarlisle @UlrikeFischer who maintains helvet? Here is an MWE from TL19 frozen
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{helvet}
\begin{document}
\sffamily
test
\end{document}
@DavidCarlisle ooh pomme de terre

@daleif It's an open question how to handle this. See github.com/latex3/latex2e/issues/299.
@JosephWright why does siunitx not define a \permil unit?
@UlrikeFischer although we could have saved ourselves some stress and used info there not warning:-)
@DavidCarlisle ooh
ooh Reguläre Kraftausdrücke
@DavidCarlisle ^^ German is so easy
@PauloCereda lol, that would be something like "regular curse expressions" in English, so you could easily search for bad language!
09:38
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz ooh :)
@DavidCarlisle yes. I tried to contact the author now, but I have no idea if the mail is valid.
@DavidCarlisle easy usernames: gitlab.com/igorwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
09:55
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz No, it's not in the SI Brochure that I know of
@JosephWright yes, but you provide \percent... I thought it was just natural to also provide \permil or \permille in that case.
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Percent is in the brochure
@JosephWright it is? Didn't know :)
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Yup, I worried about it, so I checked
@JosephWright either case, great package! Did I already thank you for it?
09:58
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz I'm trying to finish v3: it's intended to be the model expl3 package
@JosephWright hm, just use ducksay for that role :) (well, ducksay depends on tabular and grabbox, so maybe not)
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz siunitx uses array and amstext, but as it's l3-in-2e that's fine
quack
@Moriambar quack
@Moriambar ooh quack! How are you?
> In Vietnam, the 'Vietnam War' is known as the 'American War.'
Makes... sense, I guess.
10:03
@PauloCereda well rough times, my friend. Unfortunately something hit the fan... how are you?
are you still a fan of the squiggly line editor?
@Moriambar ouch, sorry to hear. But I believe things will get better any time soon. <3 /duck hug
@Moriambar in a hurry, a couple of personal struggles, but quacking and walking. :)
@PauloCereda I don't think they will, but only time will tell... :)
@Moriambar ooh vim
@PauloCereda nice to hear. Have you completed your thesis?
(if you say yes, I won't believe you)
@Moriambar fingers crossed! In bocca al lupo, as Italians say? :)
@Moriambar oh no
/quacks in despair
10:05
@PauloCereda yes, viva il lupo!
lol
(@Moriambar I actually did, but some things should never change)
@PauloCereda I completely agree with that
and I'm glad that your thesis got completed in some way, although actually not being complete for this site's sake
nice, is it in English? if so, I'll probably read it later
@Moriambar no it is Portuguese @PauloCereda can't speak English:-)
10:09
@Moriambar no, Portuguese, I am sorry. I had the option to write in English, but it was already stressing to write this long document....
@DavidCarlisle Ah, I see...
@DavidCarlisle ó não, fui descoberto
@PauloCereda So, I won't read it. :)
@PauloCereda eu não sou mau
@Moriambar there are nice diagrams. :)
@DavidCarlisle mean is another word I am not sure I'd translate as mau... :)
10:11
@PauloCereda Which are in portuguese, of course. I can't understand portuguese images unfortunately :P
55 mins ago, by David Carlisle
@PauloCereda naturally you can't think of a word because my Portuguese is much better than yours!
@Moriambar Oh c'mon, Portuguese is a daughter of Latin!
@DavidCarlisle ditto :)
@PauloCereda I know very little latin, and the last time I studied it was more than 20 years ago...
@Moriambar Well, Portuguese and Italian share a lot of things, so it might not be too difficult. :)
@PauloCereda no, believe me, I find it kinda difficult. perhaps a couple of words could be understood but not much more than that. I think, for me, it's easier to understand English :P
10:15
@Moriambar ooh :) The only English part is the acknowledgements. :)
@PauloCereda no, there's also an English abstract
@Moriambar oh that's true
10:37
@Moriambar Hi! How are you? How do the things go in your area?
@PauloCereda possibly even sensible
@PauloCereda a vim question for you to answer. tex.stackexchange.com/q/531383/1090 I think the answer is that as vim is being used the OP won't have managed to save the file, so TeX is seeing an empty file, so this is expected behaviour. Suggest to use emacs instead.
@JosephWright git question: given the discussion about \xmathstrut and its implementation, I'm thinking isn't that what branches should be used for? But do we still push the comits to branches to github (I work on different PCs so need a way to access the changed data at home)
11:11
@daleif yes we do push branches to github, and for the main 2e and llatex3 repositories often do a feature branch that is then merged to develop branch (and eventually to master) so affecting latex-dev then latex. But for packages we (mostly) work directly on develop
@DavidCarlisle :)
@daleif Branhces are good for stuff that might be an experiment, might need to be worked on, etc.; we are not very formal, so as @DavidCarlisle says, we do a lot of stuff directly to the main branch
@JosephWright I think I'll try that later, seems to be a better approach when it is a work in progress and not something that is finished immediately
[ 2/15, 00:03/03:59] update: arara [15567k] (54089 -> 54121) ... done
@PauloCereda ^
11:27
@DavidCarlisle yay
@PauloCereda er...
$ arara --version
/usr/local/texlive/2020/bin/x86_64-linux/arara: 17: exec: java: not found
@DavidCarlisle oh no
@TeXnician ^^ David is mean
maybe my new ubuntu based wsl isn't as complete as it might be...
@PauloCereda You should have written it in Lua :-)
@DavidCarlisle oopsie
@DavidCarlisle actually, arara isn't written in Java anymore!
@PauloCereda which do you recommend
Command 'java' not found, but can be installed with:

sudo apt install default-jre
sudo apt install openjdk-11-jre-headless
sudo apt install openjdk-8-jre-headless
(of the jdks)
@PauloCereda but using jvm presumably
11:33
@DavidCarlisle I think default will be a symlink to 8... I think openjdk-8-jre-headless will be the best option, as it is the lowest common denominator. :)
@DavidCarlisle It does. Until we make native thingy work. :)
davidc@dc-bantham:/mnt/c/tmp$ arara --version

@DavidCarlisle woo
<3
@PauloCereda I tried too:
C:\Users\Nililand2020\Documents\Tests>arara --version
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ExceptionInInitializerError

@UlrikeFischer oh no
16 mins ago, by David Carlisle
@PauloCereda You should have written it in Lua :-)
11:47
@UlrikeFischer could you run java -version please?
@DavidCarlisle oh
C:\Users\Nililand2020\Documents\Tests>java -version
java version "1.8.0_241"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_241-b07)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 25.241-b07, mixed mode)
@PauloCereda ^^
@UlrikeFischer Uh-oh
@UlrikeFischer let me investigate
@PauloCereda later on the error says:
Caused by: java.nio.file.InvalidPathException: Illegal char <:> at index 2: /C:/texlive/2020/texmf-dist/scripts/arara/arara.jar
@UlrikeFischer Ah thank you that's helpful!
Where is the : after C from?
11:50
@UlrikeFischer it's a drive letter separator IIRC.
@PauloCereda yes, but in the bash I get pathes like /c/texlive, not /c:/texlive. Windows style would be C:\
@UlrikeFischer We will investigate. Where are running? Command prompt?
@PauloCereda yes, but a git bash shows the same error.
@UlrikeFischer Oh my.
@UlrikeFischer, could you print the entire stacktrace, please?
@UlrikeFischer the shell you are using won't directly influence this, what will matter is if you are using a windows java or a posix-y one from cygwin or wsl . Even in bash, once you call java to run the jar file a windows java will expect to see windows paths (except that it allows / for \ to save having to escape them in strings
11:57
@PauloCereda you mean the full terminal output or some additional option?
@UlrikeFischer full terminal output, please.
@UlrikeFischer just to confirm, also run just arara
I might know where to start investigating.

        at kotlin.reflect.jvm.internal.KClassImpl$Data$objectInstance$2.invoke(KClassImpl.kt:114)
@PauloCereda that gives the same error. (It looks like some touristic route with this at sun and at java at island ...)
@UlrikeFischer :)
12:11
Hmm: Anyone know any reason why one you need to make changes todo this: tex.stackexchange.com/q/531430/3929
@CarLaTeX hey, here things are OK. Not in my life but we'll see what the future will bring us. How are things with you? Is everything good?
12:25
@daleif not sure quite what you mean?
@DavidCarlisle, @UlrikeFischer patch on its way, I think I managed to get it.
@PauloCereda you mean you repaired my arara and broke David's?
@UlrikeFischer of course. <3
@UlrikeFischer please re-use the emoji I posted yesterday
😛
@DavidCarlisle done ^^^
12:36
@UlrikeFischer I meant read it, not post it:-)
@DavidCarlisle ooh
@UlrikeFischer meanwhile I mailed D.A. re import.
@DavidCarlisle a user who want to have the minus in $-3$ to look like the minus in $3-3$
@daleif I'm not even sure which one they want. It could also be that all minus should look like -3.
@daleif I think that's just because he made the example too small, in the example from the comments -3 \textrm{ and } -2 you do want the unary minus both times.
12:47
@Moriambar Sorry to hear things are not going well in your life :) I'm well, I have been smartworking since two weeks ago, hoping this nightmare will stop soon
@DavidCarlisle sorry I'm not a soo good linguist as you are ;-(
@UlrikeFischer Das ist wahr.
12:59
@DavidCarlisle Das ist meine Schuld
@PauloCereda Keine Sorge, bald ist Abendessen.
@DavidCarlisle oh nein
13:36
Anyone know how to control pandocs html to markdown? Especially how to make it choose the syntax variants I want (for example I want <em>T</em> to be converted to _T_ not *T*)

1 hour later…
14:41
@UlrikeFischer someone else we can blame for ho-tex issues
@DavidCarlisle you mean the iftex?
@UlrikeFischer no zref (team list)
@DavidCarlisle ah, just saw it.
@UlrikeFischer but on iftex does scrbase still define \ifpdftex or does it just define the new names? (I could check myself, but you may know already:-)
@DavidCarlisle if is undefined now.
14:48
@UlrikeFischer tempting just to remove that block then
@DavidCarlisle yes, imho we could do it.

1 hour later…
15:57
\documentclass{scrartcl}

\makeatletter
\scr@ifpdftex{\typeout{yes}}{\typeout{no}}
\begin{document}

\end{document}
@UlrikeFischer ^^
16:08
@DavidCarlisle yes ?
don't you get
Package scrbase Warning: Usage of deprecated command `\ifnotundefined'.
(scrbase) The command has been renamed because of a
(scrbase) recommendation of The LaTeX Project Team.
(scrbase) Please replace `\ifnotundefined' by `\Ifnotundefined'
@DavidCarlisle yes, but I looked only at the typeout ;-)
because scrbase itself defines \newcommand{\scr@ifpdftex}{\ifnotundefined{pdftexversion}}
@DavidCarlisle I will write Markus about it, or perhaps I should first check the development
@UlrikeFischer Mein Deutsch kann eine politische Subtilität vermissen
16:15
Is there an easy way to set two equation-groups inside the same subequations environment? I tried the following, but it doesn't work:
\documentclass[]{article}

\usepackage[]{amsmath}

\usepackage[]{hyperref}

\begin{document}
\begin{subequations}\label{eq:a}
\begin{align}
  a &= b \\
  c &= d \\
  e &= f
  \intertext{Text.}
  \refstepcounter{parentequation}\label{eq:A}
  A &= b \\
  C &= d \\
  E &= f
\end{align}
\end{subequations}
\end{document}
@JosephWright Great :)
@PhelypeOleinik You have an email :)

1 hour later…
17:37
@DavidCarlisle answer sent
@DavidCarlisle ooh

1 hour later…
18:39
@UlrikeFischer @JosephWright I think you mentioned something similar already, but if I try l3build check in iftex using the pretest it always remakes lualatex format and then makes no diffs but says at the end that there has been a failure. Not sure what checkengines is supposed to be when lutex and lualatex are using different engines
@JosephWright oh I suppose I can set the engine to luahbtex in the main build.lua then set it to luatex in the config files for plain tex tests, let me see....
hmmm
19:00
@UlrikeFischer around?
@DavidCarlisle I guess I'll have to add a mapping ...
19:21
@PauloCereda we are at the theatre. Is there a problem?
@UlrikeFischer not at all, just working on a secret project. :) Would you and Gert proofread it? :)
@PauloCereda sure.
@UlrikeFischer ooh a secret
@DavidCarlisle that should work, but the problem is that it then fail on Travis, so I made the last tests with tl19.
@UlrikeFischer invite sent. Don't kill me, please. :)
@UlrikeFischer the images between frames need to be ajusted to look in the same position, I need to add more frames...
19:39
@PauloCereda got It but can't look now theatre restarts
@UlrikeFischer oh no worries. We have a lot of time. :) Have fun at the theatre. :)
19:51
@PauloCereda /slightly curious, but also guilty feeling rabbit sounds
20:49
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Do you mean like in tex.stackexchange.com/a/482658/4427?
21:17
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz ooh <3
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz Check Signal. :)
@egreg yes, this. How stupid of amsmath to keep track of the parent equation using a fully functional counter, but then not using the actual value but only evaluating it at the start (there is most likely a reason for that, but the documentation is pretty bad in this case)
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz I'm not sure the same alignment should have different parent equation number, though.
@egreg in my case I have a second column containing information on the interval in which each line of the equation is valid, and I want them to be aligned as well, which isn't possible with different aligns (well, of course it is, but only really cumbersome).
@UlrikeFischer ooh I think I managed to get all frames! Yay!
21:42
@PauloCereda looks good ;-)
@UlrikeFischer ooh :) When you have some spare time, could you proofread the German? I had to copy and paste from a text I found on the internet. No way I would be able to type that! :)
21:57
@PauloCereda it looks ok.
