@DavidCarlisle It shouldn't be. Karl emailed me that he rolled the update back.

@HenriMenke I seem to have pgf 3.1.2 now also in texlive. tlmgr restore pgf says that it was installed yesterday, so it looks as if there was an (perhaps unwanted) rollback from the rollback. @DavidCarlisle

@HenriMenke I updated everything quite recently, certainly last week, and the OPs example worked but then i did an update yesterday and it failed as reported.

6:59 AM
@DavidCarlisle thank you very much. I'll check these out.

Q: Changing the site name

Henri MenkeToday I was browsing https://mathematica.stackexchange.com/ and saw in the “Hot Meta Posts” sidebar that they are changing their site name from “Mathematica” to “Mathematica & Wolfram Language”. Note the usage of the ampersand symbol to chain the two topics. In the comments to the accepted answ...

@JosephWright @StefanKottwitz @MartinScharrer ^^^
@DavidCarlisle @UlrikeFischer I'll email Karl and the CTAN team to see if they can roll it back.

@DavidCarlisle the closest match appears to be "Fette Unz Fraktur", except I don't need "Fette" (bold), but the normal type face. I contacted the author, so let's see if he can point me to a related font.

@PauloCereda Is the platypus a marmot duck or a duck marmot? (@marmot)

@CarLaTeX I've no idea. :)

@HenriMenke miktex has since quite some time already 3.1.2. and apart from a few questions because of the pgfkeys problem I didn't see other problems. Can't you upload a 3.1.3 with the fix?

7:59 AM
@0xC0000022L I once was looking for a font and the blokes at typography.guru helped me a lot!

@PauloCereda thanks, I'll check it out as well.

10:54 AM
@UlrikeFischer Unfortunately I can't do anything, because I'm not a registered maintainer on CTAN. I'll ask Christian to update.
@UlrikeFischer Do you have a MWE for the beamer issue?
@UlrikeFischer Does your MWE here do the same thing?

@HenriMenke which beamed issue?

11:16 AM
@HenriMenke simply e.g. Darmstadt (with a new pgf):
\documentclass{beamer}
\usetheme{Darmstadt}

\begin{document}
\end{document}

@UlrikeFischer, @HenriMenke I guess I need to fix this ...

@JosephWright depends on if shadings stay local.

hmm, why can't I scale an image to 220cm?

@daleif because.

@DavidCarlisle but my canvas is 220cm tall...
Rather interesting to see that the largest size my Evince could scale this canvas template was to 85%.

11:32 AM
most likely you get arithmetic overflow in the not very robust graphics scaling, it just uses fixed point dimen arithmetic I scale it to get reasonable values in mid-range so working out scale factors is plausibly accurate but..... (or at least I assume that's where it fails?)

I'll figure something out, I was just having a bit of fun with a beachflag design. Was hoping to scale a jpg what is 700px tall to 220cm. And yes the grainyness would be intentional

I get no error from
\documentclass{article}

\usepackage{graphicx}

\begin{document}

\includegraphics[height=220cm]{example-image}
\end{document}

isn't that because it is using a vector PDF image? This is a jpg

@DavidCarlisle but jpg can have curious resolutions. tex.stackexchange.com/q/207348/2388
@daleif didn't you just wrote that it is a jpg?

@UlrikeFischer edited

11:42 AM
@daleif what do the metadata of the jpg say?

11:54 AM
@UlrikeFischer imagemagick identify says JPEG 3745x722 3745x722+0+0 8-bit sRGB 1.911MB 0.130u 0:00.130
I took a slice of it an used Gimp to scale it. Ended at 40Mb, but is a lot less pixielated than I thought. Hmm, think I'll abandon this idea for a background (also the flag printer wants colors in CMYK, which this image is not)

12:34 PM
@UlrikeFischer Image inclusion should work for all engines now, at least at a basic level. Need to think about adding extensions next
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{expl3}
\usepackage{l3image}
\begin{document}

\ExplSyntaxOn

\mode_leave_vertical:
\hbox_set:Nn \l_tmpa_box { \image_include:n { example-image-a.pdf } }
\box_resize_to_wd:Nn \l_tmpa_box { \textwidth }
\box_set_trim:Nnnnn \l_tmpa_box { 0.5\textwidth } { 0pt } { 0pt } { 0pt }
\box_clip:N \l_tmpa_box
\box_use:N \l_tmpa_box

\end{document}

I'm working on a problem with TeXLive 18 on a W10 laptop for a less-experienced colleage. When I try to update the packages (or get the list) I try using tlmgr update --list, but in command prompt I get an error message saying that the command "tlmgr" can't be found. What should I advise him? Install TeXLive 19, change the path in TeXworks?

5:40 PM
@MaxR How did they install TeX Live? That sounds odd
@MaxR Is the PATH right?

@MaxR is the texlive bin directory added to the commandline path, or just if called from texworks?

@CarLaTeX Do they hibernate? No? Then they are no marmots. ;-)

back to my question, he used MikTeX, thus the tlmgr command isn't defined

@MaxR That would be it then!

6:04 PM
@marmot awesomeplatypus.wordpress.com/behavior They are strange also for hibernation

@DavidCarlisle More graphics things ...

@JosephWright yes sorry had no time at work today to follow at all, but I've been watching the checkin messages.

@DavidCarlisle No pressure
@DavidCarlisle I've tried to summarise the bigger questions on the team list

@JosephWright in between hooky discussions

@DavidCarlisle In the end, this is all basically a re-write of existing code, there are not really new ideas
@DavidCarlisle Yes, that's more tricky

@JosephWright brilliant existing code, at that:-)

6:48 PM
@DavidCarlisle I'm running out of things that need doing that aren't dependent on hooks and/or shipout
@DavidCarlisle Yes, it's pretty good, and I did help with the 2e drivers :)
@DavidCarlisle Getting close to having done all of graphics and color (still have page colour, which needs atbegshi or similar)

on scaling are you going for always using \scalebox (effectively?) in graphics i went to some effort to try to use native scaling from the image inclusion unless rotation had been used first, but it's clearly useless for scalable formats and I'm not sure it makes any difference with bitmap formats and current drivers

@DavidCarlisle That's another question: scaling/clipping is only handled at the image inclusion level for some drivers, and it seems easier overall just to leave as box (or coffin) ops
@DavidCarlisle With an FPU and pdfmode as the 'primary' route, the thought process is a bit different

@JosephWright oh just read your email on that:-)
@JosephWright I forget the details but certainly some of the drivers back then would sample bitmaps if asked so it was better to let them do it rather than just wrap a postscript scale around the result, but dvips doesn't support any sensible bitmap formats now, so if the bitmap is wrapped as eps then you may as well just use a postcript scale around that

@DavidCarlisle Sure
@DavidCarlisle question in a sense links to page/pagebox/.... as adding scale, ... means more things to possibly pass along

@JosephWright do you have any evidence of anyone ever having used the mps inclusion macros? (for luatex I did start to look at including mp directly, since it includes a metapost engine)

7:00 PM
@DavidCarlisle No, but there is doubtless one user somewhere
@DavidCarlisle Possibly not worth worrying in a new driver set up, at least at present. Adding it would only require the driver functions, so it's not a fundamental change

@JosephWright ;-). I think I have told at sometime someone that you can use mps directly in pdflatex, but not often. What does in your mail mean about the vars that "these are not passed to \image_include:n"? In my test yesterday I could pass the page with them.

@UlrikeFischer I mean that \image_include:n doesn't have them as explicit arguments, rather we rely on whatever they are current set to. So for adding say two pages of a PDF we'd need \tl_set:Nn \l_image_page_tl { 1 } \image_include:n { foo.pdf } \tl_set:Nn \l_image_page_tl { 2 } \image_include:n { foo.pdf }. Not entirely sure I like it!

@JosephWright then I understood the idea correctly. I didn't find it odd. As the image types have different sensible arguments using argument could be arkward.

@UlrikeFischer Right, yes, that's the argument for either no additional args or keeping it to a keyval one. There's a reason I went the current way at the moment.
@UlrikeFischer, @DavidCarlisle Spotted one or two bugs, now hopefully fixed
@DavidCarlisle, @UlrikeFischer supp-pdf.mkii is quite long ... I think I'll leave that for the moment :)

7:16 PM
@DavidCarlisle some of it was also a bit spooky ;-) I'm not sure that I followed everywhere.

@JosephWright especially as you can now transparently call epstopdf just treating mps files as postscript seems quite reasonable

@DavidCarlisle Yes, right
@DavidCarlisle I do need to do epstopdf support, one way or the other

1 hour later…
@PauloCereda Thanks

@PauloCereda linux kernel sounds more interesting

9:15 PM
@UlrikeFischer @WillRobertson any ideas what luatex is doing here?
0
A: TeX Gyre Pagella Math Integral sign much too small

David Carlislewith xelatex you get but with lualatex you get from \documentclass{article} \usepackage{unicode-math} \setmathfont{TeX Gyre Pagella Math} \setmathfont{TeX Gyre Pagella Math}[range=\int,Scale=2] \begin{document} \[\int_\gamma\frac{f(x)}{z-a}\] \end{document} I'm not sure if the differ...

10:15 PM
@DavidCarlisle agreed

@DavidCarlisle I found in the context code a \Uvextensible command.

@PauloCereda putting a unix-ish operating under an existing GUI desktop, who'd hav ethat idea....

@DavidCarlisle ooh

testfiles/tlb-extraprimitives-001.luatex.tlg:Uvextensible
:-)

@DavidCarlisle ;-)

10:52 PM
@JosephWright I think the shadings should be “fixed” now. Can you try running the beamer tests and docs with the current PGF master branch?

@HenriMenke I am wondering if you agree with this post that there is a "bug". I don't.

11:14 PM
@DavidCarlisle I get the same with xelatex: the size of the symbol is too small in the TeX Gyre fonts.

@egreg yes sure the font glyph is too small but the scaling behaviour in xetex and luatex is different (not that scaling it so it is thicker as well as taller makes a good result)

@marmot It is a bug. Fixed here: github.com/pgf-tikz/pgf/commit/…
