@samcarter Like all marmots, I am a vegetarian. (I don't think I qualify as a vegan, though, since I drink honey liquor once in a while. ;-)

3 hours later…
5:42 AM
Hellooo?

@samcarter That seems as good an explanation as any. The placement is still odd, but given that they don't want to keep this button in people's face, I can't think of any better place to put it.

2 hours later…
7:27 AM
@StefanKottwitz but there is no chat and it is lacking a sensible notification system (no I don't want to get notifications by emails).

7:40 AM
@UlrikeFischer I considered to setup a chat service (for example with OpenFire), but the site is not so busy, so no idea if it would be used, if the effort would be useful. In a situation of a much more frequented site, programming additional features (as chat and adjusting the email notification feature for local notifications) makes more sense.

Oh, they have now changed back to colors looking a bit more like the old tex.SE site :)

8:13 AM
@StefanKottwitz, @UlrikeFischer My feeling, at least at present, is that it's worth seeing if StackOverflow address the biggest issues before moving to a 'lifeboat' site. I'd not rule it out, though: we've always known that the Powers have their own agenda.

8:54 AM
@StefanKottwitz I understand the arguments regarding chat, but a better notification system is imho needed even now. Currently I only see by chance if someone mentioned me or edited an answer.

@UlrikeFischer By chance or by choice ;-) I see all mentions and changes since I consider the mail notification similar like an light mailing list, they go to a separate folder that I quickly browse and empty regularly. You don't subscribe to notification mails, fine as well. But I may send you an email if I added a notification feature. ;-)

9:22 AM
@JosephWright I still haven't lost hope, but I'm getting close

@StefanKottwitz sorry but email is quite an unusable system for me here. I don't want to quit the site to check my mails to see if someone answered to one of my comments and then go back to check what it is about. And I don't want to have to setup filters everywhere to avoid that more or less useless mails clutter my inbox.

@samcarter May I ask how you create .gifs from a beamer .pdf? You don't seem to have the same problem as I had.
@samcarter Or is this not the right place to ask such a question?

@Max I used convert -delay 50 -loop 0 -density 100 -alpha remove document.pdf output.gif

Max
@samcarter Thanks! I think it's the -alpha remove option that makes the difference.
@samcarter Still getting the same problem, with exactly the same command :( Do you use ImageMagick and GhostScript?

10:09 AM
@Max I use ImageMagick and whatever this uses in the background. What OS do you have? I'm on a mac.

Max
@samcarter I'm using Windows 10. Maybe I just have to update some stuff. Thanks anyway :)

@Max You're welcome!

10:32 AM
hey guys, so I have to apply this template from my school, but I'm not sure how to do it

Max
@samcarter Updating GhostScript fixed it :)

this is the template:
\NeedsTeXFormat{LaTeX2e}
\ProvidesClass{uvamath}[2017/10/27 0.4 Bachelor Wiskunde LaTeX document class]
\LoadClassWithOptions{scrreprt}
\RequirePackage{graphicx}
\DeclareOption{english}{
% English values for translatable constant text
\def\supervisortextsingular{Supervisor}
\def\supervisortextplural{Supervisors}
\def\titletext{Title}
\def\authortextsingular{Authors}
\def\authortextplural{Authors}
\def\datetext{End date}
\def\secondgradertextsingular{Second grader}
\def\secondgradertextplural{Second grader}
but I don't know what to do with this standard thing;
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}

\title{test}
\author{}
\date{August 2018}

\begin{document}

\maketitle

\section{Introduction}

\end{document}

@ShaVuklia As you have a class template you should probably use it as documentclass.

@Max Good to hear!

@TeXnician so what would be the class here?
uvamath?

10:37 AM
@ShaVuklia Your template says uvamath.

@TeXnician right, so now I've tried this:
\NeedsTeXFormat{LaTeX2e}
\ProvidesClass{uvamath}[2017/10/27 0.4 Bachelor Wiskunde LaTeX document class]
\documentclass[2017/10/27 0.4 Bachelor Wiskunde LaTeX document class]{uvamath}
\LoadClassWithOptions{scrreprt}
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\RequirePackage{graphicx}
\DeclareOption{english}{
% English values for translatable constant text
\def\supervisortextsingular{Supervisor}
\def\supervisortextplural{Supervisors}
\def\titletext{Title}
\def\authortextsingular{Authors}
\def\authortextplural{Authors}
the error says that at line 4, File`uvamath.cls' can't be found

@ShaVuklia You should probably read an introduction to LaTeX, which covers the differences between packages, classes and documents. Because this is the wrong place to put it (should be a separate class file).

I understand the difference vaguely, but I don't understand what you mean by putting it in a separate class file
@TeXnician I just see a document class as the way the document will be formatted, and packages are just additional things for your document

@ShaVuklia Well and that's somehow true, but there are many things you are missing, e.g. that generally the document, the class and packages are all text files. And that's where you should start. You've got that template as a class file, so it should be one.

oh, so I will make a separate text file for this template, and then refer to it in the main document when I introduce the class?
@TeXnician so I've done that now, but I think I have to put all kinds of things in the main file now
should I put all those things that are defined in the template in my main document?
e.g.;
\def\supervisortextsingular{Supervisor}
\def\supervisortextplural{Supervisors}
\def\titletext{Title}
\def\authortextsingular{Authors}
\def\authortextplural{Authors}
\def\datetext{End date}
\def\secondgradertextsingular{Second grader}
\def\secondgradertextplural{Second grader}
\def\thesistext{Bachelor thesis Mathematics}
\def\thesisWNtext{Bachelor thesis Mathematics and Physics \& Astronomy}
\def\thesisWItext{Bachelor thesis Mathematics and Computer Science}
\def\secondyearprojecttext{Project report Mathematics year 2}
so I tried doing this, but that doesn't really work;
\documentclass{uvamath}[2017/10/27 0.4 Bachelor Wiskunde LaTeX document class]
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}

\title{test}
\author{}
\date{August 2018}

\begin{document}

\supervisortextsingular{Supervisor}
\supervisortextplural{Supervisors}
\titletext{Title}
\authortextsingular{Authors}
\authortextplural{Authors}
\datetext{End date}
\secondgradertextsingular{Second grader}
\secondgradertextplural{Second grader}
\thesistext{Bachelor thesis Mathematics}

10:50 AM
@ShaVuklia As I said before you should read a LaTeX introduction to get a feeling for this kind of differences. Concerning the template I do not know what your aim is, maybe ask the maintainers how to achieve a specific thing.
@ShaVuklia This will not work as expected, first of all remove the optional argument after the documentclass and then you should decide whether to define the macros or to call them.

alright I removed the optional argument. well, since the macros are defined in the template, it seems redundant to me to define them again in the document?
so the first two blocks have to do with choosing english or dutch

11:12 AM
@TeXnician so I've read some introductory texts, but I'm still not sure how to use \DeclareOption{}{}
I'm starting to see the structure of the class file, so that's good
but I'm not sure how to implement the options within the class

@ShaVuklia Because surely declaring option is not basic and you should not even need it in your normal document. I do not think the template authors want you to play around with them.

so I shouldn't call them?
they will be implemented automatically?
how can I for instance get the title or the supervisor in my document? I assumed I had to use the DeclareOption somehow, because that's where it is defined in the class file

11:26 AM
@TeXnician if you have time:')

Max
@ShaVuklia \DeclareOption{}{} is a command only used in classes or packages. You don't need it when writing a document.
@ShaVuklia The options are defined in the class file, and you can call them with the optional argument of \documentclass[<optional argument>]{<class name>}.
@ShaVuklia I tried your class file, and apparently you have to give at least one option to the \documentclass command, which is either tweedejaarsproject, bachelorscriptie, dubaWN, or dubaWI. These option define a certain description of the project that is needed in \maketitle.

11:42 AM
hey yea I am trying it out too now!
there is also another option, called english
I feel like I'm almost there, I just have to include my university's logo

Max
@ShaVuklia Yes that's probably to translate the Dutch default texts to English default texts.

yes

Max
@ShaVuklia Try this one which is a vector version of the logo. I think it looks better than using raster images as .png or .jpg.

thanks
it will have to look like this eventually at the end of the page
I'm going to see if the class file has a thing for that

12:17 PM
@Max do you have any idea how I can get the logo thing?

12:41 PM
ahh, I'm so almost there
I have no idea why the logo won't be centered

Max
1:02 PM
@ShaVuklia A quick and dirty solution would be to replace every line with \includegraphics[width=0.070\hsize]{uvalogo} (there are 5 of them) in the class file with \hfill\includegraphics[width=0.070\hsize]{uvalogo}\hfill%. Note the percentage symbol, you need that to prevent the line-break turning into a space.

1:23 PM
thanks so much @Max!
you're the best!

@JosephWright If you're around, could you please help me guess what could M mean in 1 M H2SO4 / 100 V / 1 hour?

1:36 PM
@boycott.se-yo' Isn't it a short form for the concentration (mole per liter)?

@TeXnician probably. I'll for this moment simply suppose it's a unit :-)

@boycott.se-yo' To back it up: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molar_concentration ("commonly designated as 1 M").

Max
@ShaVuklia No problem, glad I could help.

@TeXnician ah good, I didn't know this one, thanks!

@boycott.se-yo' You're welcome.

@Skillmon ^^ :)

@PauloCereda ?
@PauloCereda Hello, Mr. PhDuck

@Skillmon It was a post on Meta.SE about the similar layout of SE sites. The OP blurred some parts of the screenshot and asked if someone could discover which site was the image. I saw your avatar. :)
@Skillmon Hi Mr. Rabbit!

@PauloCereda link or didn't happen :)

Q: It is now all but impossible to tell sites appart at a glance

RaphaelLet's play a little guessing game. I came across an open tab -- which site am I on? @boycott.se-yo' 1 molar = 1 mole per cubic decimetre. Traditionally set as 1\,\textsc{m}

@JosephWright ah thanks!

@PauloCereda very good post, with people trying very hard to not understand...

@Skillmon :)

Useful link posted about the design changes (thanks @Raphael)

@JosephWright I think there are two profiles which should be merged: tex.stackexchange.com/users/168390/user168390 and tex.stackexchange.com/users/168378/user168378

@Skillmon Merges have to be done by staff (mods lost that ability several years ago)

See here for a question where he did post an answer with another profile: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/445865/…
@JosephWright :( How should I flag for that?

@Skillmon You can't, really: it's down to the user to ask
I see we are not the only group who talk about the Powers:
Fair enough, but doesn't that indicate it's not about the design change? Is this a thread about the design change or about how to improve communication about change between the Powers That Be and the userpopulation? — Mast 11 hours ago

Q: Making the left navigation more useful

TeXnicianThis post is not about the left navigation bar being annoying or something to disable. 5:32 PM
@TeXnician "[...] and I think that the sticky left navigation would be a great place for this." I agree, except that I don't think the sticky left navigation is a great place for anything (also, it can be disabled just like the sticky top bar...). But it would be the best to at least try make that bar useful to some extent.

h\textsubscript{f}/h\textsubscript{max} -- @egreg beauitful :)

6:42 PM
okay I am using this answer to generate HTML tex.stackexchange.com/questions/445582/…
is there a way to define my own custom commands solely for generating the HTML maybe?
\sidebar{<content>} = <div id=sidebar">content</div>
simple example but still learning

6:56 PM
@egreg and guess what $P_{a}$ is

7:12 PM
@boycott.se-yo' Great, as usual. Is P_{a} for the unit pascal?

@egreg yay! You win 10 points!

10 point for gryffindor

7:34 PM
@boycott.se-yo' seriously, $P_{a}$ for Pascal? Who's done that?

@samcarter Have you ever thought of adding real (or marmot) whiskers to the pgfplots library statistics? I think there is a huge demand for that. ;-)

@William I think egreg would've been in Ravenclaw, as Ravenclaw favours knowledge, not courage.

@Skillmon I don't provide this information. Sharing small bits of code I meet when working is the most I'm willing to do.

@Skillmon lol well had never put much thought into it honestly. One of my teachers used it when I younger.

@boycott.se-yo' Thought this was on TeX.SX, totally understanding that.

7:50 PM
@Skillmon any ideas to my question above chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/46187816#46187816

@William I really don't know anything about htlatex and the like. I never used those. If the output would be direct, the following could work: \newcommand\sidebar[1]{<div id=sidebar">#1</div>}, but as I said, I don't know whether this would work.

@William see tex.meta.stackexchange.com/a/7292/2388 regarding questions in chat.

I don't typically ping people directly so I agree on that point.
Some of these answers are so simple and helped Skilmon the other day ;)
So I figured I scratch his back maybe she(I think) could help me a little

@William If I could, I surely would.
@marmot where's that second palindrome?

@Skillmon You're right...

8:07 PM
@Skillmon no worries then :-)

@William I figured how it does work.
TeX document:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{sidebar}
\begin{document}
\sidebar{foobar}
\end{document}
sidebar.sty file:
\ProvidesPackage{sidebar}
\newcommand\sidebar[1]{#1}
sidebar.4ht file:
\NewConfigure{sidebar}{2}

\renewcommand\sidebar[1]{\a:sidebar#1\b:sidebar}
\Configure{sidebar}{\HCode{<div class="sidebar">}}{\HCode{</div>}}
Put all three into your folder. Resulting HTML:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en-US" xml:lang="en-US" >
<head><title></title>
<meta  charset="utf-8" />
<meta name="generator" content="TeX4ht (tug.org/tex4ht/)"; />
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width,initial-scale=1" />
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="htlatexquicktest.css" />
<meta name="src" content="htlatexquicktest.tex" />
</head><body
>
<!--l. 4--><p class="noindent" ><div class="sidebar">foobar</div>
</p>

</body>
</html>

\hcode is the trick thank you!!

@William no problem :)
@William you should upvote that linked answer, if it was of value for you.

@Skillmon already did first thing I did
after verifying it worked

@William well done.
Going to bed, got a test tomorrow in the morning. Good night everybody!

8:22 PM
Marmot palindrome synchronization... ;-)
@Skillmon I do not know why I thought there were not two palindromes... ;-)

@marmot question was on which site was the second one.

is texwelt.de/wissen where the diaspora is going during the boycott? ;)
I'm not sure if I can learn dutch(Edit: whatever language it is).

@William German would do for this site...

8:38 PM
@marmot Die Seite kannte ich noch nicht, bin jetzt da auch registriert :) (English: I didn't know that site yet, I've just registered there, too)

@Skillmon Glad to hear! I didn't know the site either, but @HenriMenke and @StefanKottwitz suggested to register. They, especially Stefan, do a really great job in running it. The only downside is it is in German, but I guess with autotranslate it might be accessible to most. (And it is hard to find a question without MWE there for some reason. ;-) Looking forward to seeing your posts there! ;-)

@marmot Now I've potentially doubled my procrastination time :)
Now, I go to bed. This time is for real. Good night!

8:54 PM
@Skillmon No worries, the activity on TeXWelt is much lower.But yes, if the powers running this site start to impose some unbearable rules on us, we can always switch. (Frankly, even though I do not like the new web site design at all, I do not think they want to hurt us, and they seem to be responsive to some extent. And some of the comments contained strong language, which I would prefer not to see, even if I agree content-wise.)
@Skillmon Gute Nacht!
