@barbarabeeton easy answer: "you deserve what you get"

1 hour later…
8:10 AM
@StefanKottwitz Do we have some kind of 'contact' or 'info' mail address set up for texfaq.org? Would be handy for bug reports, etc.

9:09 AM
@Dr.ManuelKuehner thank you. :)

Paliprime inflation....

@marmot ooh

@PauloCereda ooh++

@marmot ooh

10:16 AM
@PauloCereda Hmmh, you seem to be trapped in a ooh loop ;-)

@marmot ooh a loopty loop :)

@DavidCarlisle ooh counters

@PauloCereda 5015

@DavidCarlisle ^^

10:25 AM
@PauloCereda there seems to be an out by one error there somewhere asynchronous counting is tricky....

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@PauloCereda no one will ever need 10MB of space

@DavidCarlisle agreed, arara is just 5MB. :)

@PauloCereda You forgot that you depend on JRE ;)

@TeXnician shhhhh :P

10:37 AM
@PauloCereda so that leaves 5, then we divide by the size of your thesis, oops divide by zero error....

@DavidCarlisle ooh infinity size

11:09 AM
@PauloCereda The first hard disk I used was too big: 20MB.
@DavidCarlisle Nor more than 640 kB of RAM

11:23 AM
@egreg :)

@egreg how times have changed...nowadays you get an entire server system for that price
@DavidCarlisle there will be only a market for 5 computers

Just found this in a box left by a former colleague

seems to be from 1990

11:55 AM
that brings me to the question: what is the oldest book ever recproduced using *TeX

12:08 PM
@daleif the one on my desk here is 16th printing from 1989, not sure about the one at home, older than that I think.

@DavidCarlisle For a moment I thought you said an edition from the 16th century. :)

@PauloCereda no @egreg's got that one.

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@egreg -- the first computer i programmed for was 32kb, quickly doubled to 64kb when it was found that overlays couldn't be accommodated in less. (and the box it was installed in was the size of a refrigerator.)
@daleif -- looks in good condition. you could update it by running tex on the various errata files and cutting apart and pasting in the corrected text snippets.

(I apologize, I had to vent this.)
@egreg @barbarabeeton ^^

@DavidCarlisle I have the Millenium collection (was that th name)? hardcover at home

@yo' -- no apology needed. i think my reaction would be much like yours. fortunately, tugboat authors know better, and most ams authors as well (at least the ones whose documents i get to look at).

yo'
@barbarabeeton I would like to note that this is about a half of the sins done in that code

@yo' \\ \indent is very nice! And \begin{figure*}[!h] is hilarious!

yo'
@egreg not to speak about:
\subsection{We...}
\indent A...
@egreg :
\begin{figure}[h!!!]

12:57 PM
@yo' -- you have my condolences. the main complaint with ams papers is the loading of more packages than are needed or used, the full collection of definitions that an author has used for the last 25 years, and the redefining of one-letter (or other already defined) control sequences.

@yo' Just adding to the freakshow: A few days ago a colleague of mine was using \noindent before every paragraph of the text :P

@yo' No complaint about “I typed several !, but the figure floats anyway”?
@PhelypeOleinik One I saw set \parindent to zero, ended each paragraph with \par and started each one with \hspace{...}.

yo'
@egreg no.

@egreg Some people apparently think TeX makes things too easy ;)

@egreg, @DavidCarlisle I'm looking at the e-type business, and I wonder what we want to do about internals such as \__str_if_eq_x:nn. I suspect as we never make any variants, just \__str_if_eq:nn would be OK ... thoughts?

1:02 PM
@PhelypeOleinik Actually they complain because things are very difficult.
@JosephWright It's true that \pdfstrcmp does expansion anyway, but the name should reflect the action; I favor the current name.

> Pokémon GO is finally going to let players trade Pokémon
Now I need to make my friends play that game...

@JosephWright I've avoided having thoughts on names so far.
@PauloCereda I didn't know anyone still played:-)

@egreg OK, not a big thing :)

@DavidCarlisle :)
@DavidCarlisle was M playing?

@JosephWright In my opinion, \__str_if_eq:nn { \tl_to_str:N #1 } { \tl_to_str:N #2 } would be difficult to understand.

1:08 PM
@egreg They are using this as a guide to LaTeX: each.uspnet.usp.br/sarajane/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/…
@egreg You don't even need Google Translate to see the problem :P

@PhelypeOleinik A big error at the start of section 2.2.1 Acentuação: Quando o pacote fontenc não tiver sido declarado. It's actually inputenc!

@egreg This is just the start :P
@egreg It tells to use {\large{text}} or \begin{large}... to change font size

@PhelypeOleinik I think to have used explicit font size changing commands in the document body just a handful of times (excluding examples of TeX code, of course).

@egreg In a children's book maybe :)

1:59 PM
@PauloCereda for a few weeks, you would probably lose all credibility if you were still playing now:-)

2:18 PM
@DavidCarlisle Have some people at work who do ...

2:33 PM
@JosephWright but would they have any street credibility with teenagers anyway?

@DavidCarlisle yo wazzup
fo' sho'

@DavidCarlisle Nope :)

@JosephWright yo dude wazzup dog

@PauloCereda yo cara wazzup cachorro

@DavidCarlisle translation failed. :)

2:38 PM
@PauloCereda impossible

@DavidCarlisle LOL

@DavidCarlisle That's not a paliprime. I guess @PauloCereda needs to stay in his loop until he reaches 5 digits... ;-)

@marmot ooh more digits

@PauloCereda I see you're working on it ;-)

@marmot quack :)

3:48 PM
@egreg Hmm, but we've been pretty clear that everything should conceptually have a base function (N or n) ... I'll check some stuff in and we can argue about it ;)

4:09 PM
@JosephWright The signature is still :nn

@egreg Like I said, we can argue about it once I check some stuff in :)
@egreg This is all internal, so we can rename as we feel best

@JosephWright You can also call it \__str_wazzup:nn, but this hides the relationship with \str_if_eq_x:<whatever>

4:58 PM
What is possible to achieve with \dim_set:Nn? The following throws an arithmetic overflow:
\dim_set:Nn \l_DenisBitouze_hsize_dim
  {
    \linewidth / \l_DenisBitouze_hnup_int
    - \l_DenisBitouze_hnup_int \l_DenisBitouze_hpad_dim
    + \l_DenisBitouze_hpad_dim
  }
if I put an * between \l_DenizBitouze_hnup_int and \l_DenisBitouze_hpad_dim I get an "illegal unit of measurement" error.
nevermind, the bug was elsewhere (a stray \tl_if_in:NnTF)

5:17 PM
@Skillmon If you don't set \l_DenisBitouze_hnup_int to a nonzero value…

5:58 PM
@egreg As I said, it works now, it was a bug caused by a stray \tl_if_in:NnTF which hadn't all of its arguments given. But thank you very much nonetheless!

question: how can flagging the answer (now deleted) to the question attached by jfbu (rep. of 40k) be considered disputed, even though it does violate the common base what an answer should be?
I consider this measuring with a double standard.
link to question: https://tex.stackexchange.com/q/436879/100482

@naphaneal your comment seems strange, talking of "double standards" would imply that someone is making biased choices, but that isn't how voting works. Anyone can mark a question for deletion and anyone can vote against that.
@naphaneal also "this works for me" answers are sometimes the answer (perhaps the problem is an old distribution and confirming the document works on a current system is all the answer needed. Sometimes it's better left as a comment but if you want to include code, then an answer is easier.

@DavidCarlisle fair enough, but flagged answers clearly in violation of answering a question shouldn't be disputed, IMHO.

6:27 PM
@naphaneal as I say anyone with more than a minimal rep can vote however they see fit. (I hadn't even seen the question until just now, so it wasn't me that voted either way) and (especially if that was the first answer it isn't clearly not an answer to the original question)

6:42 PM
@naphaneal imho jfbu's answer was quite ok: It addresses the main point that hyperref is needed, it could be easily extended to address the problems of the link border. I quite often add such answers if I want to show a picture and so can't use a simple comment. I don't understand why it triggered such a discussion.

@UlrikeFischer because in my view, it was simply repeating the question without providing a valid anwser. and clearly I wasn't the only one. I just felt like pointing out, that just because someone has a high reputation, it shouldn't nbe a free ticket to point out the obvious in the answer section, that the QO did something in violation of platform rules.

@naphaneal as I say the answer didn't look that bad to me, but the idea of having rules about how people should vote is completely wrong, by design the site is supposed to scope with the occasional "odd" vote that's why it takes several votes to close questions or delete answers. democracy is supposed to get the right answer overall.

@naphaneal He didn't repeat the question. The main (and only point) is: use hyperref and while the question was a bit unclear before the edit I at least saw at that time directly that the op doesn't use it.

6:59 PM
In other news: in the last update, Keynote got support for LaTeX-like equation typesetting...

@PauloCereda Oooh

@JosephWright Yep! Hasn't tried, but I saw the change. :)

@PauloCereda I saw an alert that a whole raft of mac applications got math support

@DavidCarlisle quite possibly. :)

@AlanMunn Starred!

@PauloCereda My friend Tommaso tried with Pages

@egreg oh

@PauloCereda Quite ridicolous

@egreg Oh dear

@egreg can you see is this a new renderer or is it using the math support from safari or ???

7:15 PM
@DavidCarlisle He sent me a PDF, this is a screen copy
@DavidCarlisle I didn't investigate

@egreg well i suppose as you are a windows user, you can't easily test mac applications yourself.
Oh it's mathtype?

7:36 PM
@StefanKottwitz I thank you infinitely especially for your kind and polite advice. I left a little to calm the waters but the situation continues. I will completely ignore all his messages â another one has arrived today. My most sincere greetings and good work.
Good evening at all from the sultry Sicily. A good job for everyone.

7:49 PM
@DavidCarlisle @JosephWright Does “catenaccio” ring a bell for you? ;-)
Goal!

@egreg does it mean Goal?

@egreg Huh?
@egreg Wikipedia tell me 'The Chain': Fleetwood Mac?

@JosephWright he chose a very bad time to be rude about the English style of play

@JosephWright What Tunisia was trying: it was known as “catenaccio” in Italy, 11 players in the box.

@DavidCarlisle $1 investiment?

7:51 PM
@egreg Doesn't seem to be working

@PauloCereda i'm supporting Brazil

@DavidCarlisle As usual, the English don't know about football.

@egreg Me too

@DavidCarlisle <3

@JosephWright Italians were the masters of catenaccio

7:52 PM
@JosephWright I will take you to the beach for futvôlei.
@egreg ^^

yo'
@PauloCereda @egreg @JosephWright Do you all stay at Everest Hotel?

@yo' I will, Tom.
And I got a better deal with Booking.com then contacting the hotel afterwards. :)

@yo' I will

yo'
@PauloCereda yep, I get a better deal now at Booking then it was a month or two ago!

@yo' Wow

yo'
8:00 PM
I'm going to rebook :)

@yo' How much?

yo'
@JosephWright less than 10% difference, but still...

@yo' Not worth the hassle then, at least for me (I have funding ...)

yo'
@JosephWright ok, so I rebooked. If anyone wanted to save money and share a room, I have a free bed for any days on Jul 17--28 (and it's twin, not double :-) ) @PauloCereda @egreg

@egreg, @DavidCarlisle 'Big' e-type switch nearly working ... probably need to announce on LaTeX-L
@egreg, @DavidCarlisle Thinking of doing a release with it in (once I sort out the weird failure I'm getting in l3benchmark)

8:09 PM
@yo' Thanks, Tom. I got the discount from Booking and managed to talk to them later, so I have to keep the deal. :)

yo'
@PauloCereda you feel bound by a deal from Booking.com? You're so 90s :)

@JosephWright you could mention the release on the xetex list....

yo'
@PauloCereda remember that I already cancelled 2 Booking.com orders for the very same dates :-)

8:26 PM
@DavidCarlisle I've added something to the merge request, and I'll mail JK
@DavidCarlisle See mail

@JosephWright fingers crossed...

@DavidCarlisle Well not much has happened thus-far, and I've made all of the changes ...

@JosephWright yes but if the plan is press accept merge request button after a reasonable amount of time, then perhaps everything is going to plan.

8:51 PM
@JosephWright documentation (other than that from you and Bruno) was a bit scarce as i recall:-)

@DavidCarlisle Yes, but that's the one part that isn't in the pdfTeX manual

9:12 PM
@DavidCarlisle Looks positive

@JosephWright yes
