Does anyone have an idea how to draw horizontal rules between the top "row" of a \valign?
I want to answer this question: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/667389/…
\documentclass{article}

\newlength\mycolwd

\newenvironment{strangethingy}
  {%
    \def\\%
      {%
        \strut\par\egroup % close vtop
        \hskip\tabcolsep\egroup % close containing hbox
        \hbox{\usebox0}%
        \cr
        \noalign
          {%
            \vrule
            \leaders\hrule\hfill
            \vrule
          }%
      }%
    \valign\bgroup
        \hrule
        \sbox0{\strut\ignorespaces##\unskip\strut}%
        \hbox{\hskip\tabcolsep\global\mycolwd=\wd0\usebox0\hskip\tabcolsep}%

@DavidCarlisle I opened a question on the full site tex.stackexchange.com/questions/667398/…

@john it would have been better to post an example document not just a fragment. also have a real long expression as as I commented yesterday it would look bad to move lines to the right of the (short) expression VeryLongExpression1

@john It is common to try to get a "right-to-left flow" in formulas, and that is certainly broken in your suggested layout (as one can see in the example in the answer to your question).

And why can't I correctly measure the height of the lower row? :(

@Skillmon same as drawing vertical rules in halign?

1:58 PM
@DavidCarlisle the issue is to get the correct height for the horizontal connection rules. I got it sorted, but only by measuring the heights of the upper and lower row and drawing the rules after the alignment.

Hi, for a long time I made another public LaTeX presentation. If you want to have a look then check it out (ideal: full-screen mode, Adobe Reader): https://www.researchgate.net/publication/365889278.

I am not super happy with the end result but at one point I had to "time box" the effort :).

All is done on Overleaf and I heavily use the animate package.

Having the reference note on the right-hand side rotated and with line breaks was more difficult than expected. Maybe I will ask a question about that in the future on this site.

@Dr.ManuelKuehner What is it that you are not super happy with?

@mickep It's a bad hybrid of slides that are optimized for being presented live (full screen picture, no text) and slides that can be consumed offline without a speaker. Also I did not address the main question clear enough but that's very specific to the content.
