5:45 AM
That pmod and all the math operators with the possibility of some kind of accents... :/

6:31 AM
@manooooh It is easy (mod some difficulties).

6:48 AM
@mickep yaaaa

7:29 AM
@CarLaTeX Yes, you might. (Sorry had no internet the last couple of days because we're moving)

8:27 AM
@UlrikeFischer @PhelypeOleinik so we can blame @UlrikeFischer

9:14 AM
@samcarter are you living in dd and working at tud?

9:34 AM
@AlexG No, I just don't want to force other people to use some google-based service. You are in DD?

9:55 AM
@samcarter yes ;-) i am.
@samcarter So everybody has access to this tud schedule thingy?

@AlexG Oh, cool. Very nice city and surprisingly good university canteen!
@AlexG Yes, it is publicly available. One just has to get to know that it exists. I only learned about it because it was used for some project hosted at TU to bring particle physics into schools.

10:11 AM
how can I find out where is this folder
/texlive/2018/texmf-dist/tex/latex/
it's not in /usr/local
is there a command?

@Aurelius kpsewhere article.cls

thank you very much
it was in user/share

@Aurelius better would have been kpsewhich -var TEXMFDIST but I didn't remember the correct command fast enough, so came up with kpsewhere (which I frequently use)
I want to read the argument of a macro into a box. I don't need to know which tokens are in the box, I just need the box and its dimensions. An idiomatic way would be to use \newcommand\foo[1]{\setbox\foobox\hbox{#1}\dofoo}, but this tokenizes the argument and therefore stuff like \verb wouldn't work here. One could do some magic with \scantokens, but I want to ask whether the following would be ok (it does work, but it might be a bad idea):

thanks, no worries

\documentclass[]{article}

\newsavebox\foobox
\newcommand*\fooGobbleOpeningBrace
  {%
    \begingroup
    \catcode`\{13
    \fooGobbleOpeningBraceNow
  }
\newcommand*\fooGobbleOpeningBraceNow{} % assure being definable
\begingroup
\lccode`~=`\{
\lowercase{\endgroup\def\fooGobbleOpeningBraceNow~{\endgroup}}
\newcommand*\foo
  {%
    \fooDontGobbleOpeningBrace
    \fooGobbleOpeningBrace
  }
% define a base version without gobbling the opening brace. This could be useful
% for later if one wants to program an environment or something with it.

10:16 AM
what does kpse stand for?

@Aurelius man kpsewhich

@samcarter Good to know! In the future I will use it if need be. (And advertise it.)

@Aurelius “Karl’s path search” (Karl is Karl Berry).

@Aurelius it would typically be in /usr/share/ for distro installation and in /usr/local/ for vanilla installation. It's one of the ways how to know which one you use.

@Skillmon Why that complicated code?
\documentclass[]{article}

\newsavebox\foobox
\def\foo{\afterassignment\fooReal\let\next= }
\def\fooReal{\setbox\foobox=\hbox\bgroup\aftergroup\dofoo}

\newcommand*\dofoo{%
  \box\foobox % simplest possible output routine for a box (for testing)
}

\begin{document}

The test:
\foo{This is a \verb|\TEST|}

\end{document}

@marmot My greetings to all the marmots you meet! Meanwhile there is a new tikzling:

12:04 PM
@samcarter so I see the name catches up :-)

@boycott.se-yo' It has twice as many votes as the closes competitor :) [not that the numbers would be big enough to make any significant predictions...]

@samcarter even more now :-)

@egreg because I didn't know about \afterassignment (I still need to finish the TeXbook). That one is really handy for stuff like this.
@samcarter stop doing that, I wanted to create TikZ-animals once I have much spare time and learned enough of TikZ. I wanted to write a children's book with them :)

@Skillmon Oh children books! Where is Nicola Talbot when you need her? @PauloCereda

@boycott.se-yo' need him

12:19 PM
@AlexG her, Nicola is a lady :-)

@boycott.se-yo' ok

@boycott.se-yo' I remember that she wrote children books.

@boycott.se-yo' I don't know whether mine would become published anywhere :) It's only a little story I told my daughter about a small owl searching for friends.

12:24 PM
@Skillmon note that Nicola somehow self-publishes, Dickimaw is basically her own publishing house :) Still, she had to get the books to be sold by Amazon and stuff...

Is there a l3 equivalent of \afterassignment? There is for \aftergroup (\group_insert_after:N), but I couldn't find \afterassignment.

@Skillmon well, no. The reason is that \..._set:Nn in L3 do not match "assignments" in the TeX sense
However, L3 should offer alternatives so that you don't need these tricks...

@boycott.se-yo' I know that, but since \afterassignment doesn't need the following tokens to be the assignment but just inserts after the next assignment. And since the L3 assignments do in their cores assign stuff, \afterassignment could work. But I'll just be a bad boy and mix TeX and L3 code :)
@boycott.se-yo' I need those tricks if I want stuff like \verb to work without \scantokens (see the above)

@Skillmon yeah, or well, L3 needs to design this (@JosephWright I'm looking at you :-) )

@boycott.se-yo' hbox and vbox type arguments in xparse would be great :)
@boycott.se-yo' sadly I still need \scantokens if I want to read in an argument into a tabular with working \verb and stuff. I'll have to see whether I can manage that without it.

12:48 PM
@Skillmon Oh I'm very sorry for stealing the tikz animals (and beings)! Please consider this as a chance for you to write the tikz...x package! Everybody loves ...x packages :) (but seriously, if you would like to contribute any animals, you're very welcome to do so!)

@Skillmon \verb does't use \scantokens!
@Skillmon Verbatim-n-arguments is always going to be somewhat non-trivial

@JosephWright I don't think that's what @Skillmon implies; I read it as that he would need \scantokens to make his code work
@JosephWright don't say :-) I actually sort-of like the url packages approach with named urls; that's very robust and reasonably easy to use.

1:20 PM
@JosephWright But I'd have to do something like \NewDocumentCommand\fooTabular{+v}{\setbox\foobox\hbox{\begin{tabular}{@{}l@{}\‌scantokens{#1}\end{tabular}}\dofoo} (with removing the ^^M tokens prior to the \scantokens).
@samcarter I would never create an ...x package. It would be xtikz... :)

@Skillmon xikzlings

@boycott.se-yo' while sounding great, sadly the character combination tikz doesn't show up. And how should people know, that it is using tikz ?

@Skillmon oh c'mon, even if it were just called animals, it would work

@samcarter I could do assets, like trees (but I guess tikztrees could get misinterpreted)
@boycott.se-yo' animalx?

@Skillmon that sounds almost French (animaux)

1:32 PM
@boycott.se-yo' graphics -> graphicx so animals -> animalx !

@Skillmon oh a tikzgarden!

2:13 PM
it happened again -- a palindrome

@CarLaTeX thanks for linking the job description of Overleaf a bit ago. As it turned out, I might be less active on TeX.SX in the future.

@Skillmon Yay!!!! Congratulations! And thank you for your previous reply about the DuckBoat!

And again I answered a tikz-pgf question without writing a single byte of pgf code :) Stepping in @DavidCarlisle 's footsteps.

2:53 PM
@Skillmon Cool

Hello everyone,

For latexmk, I call it in texstudio from arara by

% arara: latexmk: { options: ['-pv'] }

However, it compiles the source file after I edit it and update the output PDF.
So, can someone tell me exactly the difference between -pv and -pvc since I can't see the difference in my particular case?
Additionally, I don't know how to terminate latexmk running in the background after calling it from arara on my Windows PC.

@Diaa taskmanager?

3:09 PM
I think it is not that easy :)
https://imgur.com/a/jdyJc41

@Diaa something is buggy, I don't see the image :(

@Skillmon ibb.co/kbchf9

@Diaa Are that all listed processes? Maybe alphabetically sorting can help instead of sorting after CPU usage.

I have a lot of tasks, so it wouldn't be useful to put all of them here.
If you know its name, it would be better.

3:52 PM
@Skillmon learning from a master

2 hours later…
6:00 PM
@Diaa how should I? Neither do I use arara (sorry @PauloCereda, but I'm a make person), nor do I use latexmk. It is a perl script named latexmk.pl and there should be a link in your PATH that is called latexmk. So something with that in its name should be the correct process.

4 hours later…
10:14 PM
@samcarter Animal or being? ;-)

10:40 PM
@marmot The non-animal beings are already in the package, so I'm currently looking for further animals :)

@samcarter Squirrels are also beings, and koala bears claim that, too. ;-)

11:16 PM
@marmot Unless one of them drops by in this chat room to complain, I'll summarize them as animals.
