@barbarabeeton one for you:-)
I'm not sure this is on topic, U+224b has full name INTERCALATE and has been in Unicode since (at least) 1.1 so was probably inherited from one of the code sets that were lumped in to the standard, the name intercal comes from iso879 isoamsb, the original sgml math character entity set. various on line dictionaries have meanings for intercalate in calendars and chemistry but I don't see any of them used with the T like symbol in this slot, so I have no idea. I would guess it's just used for transpose as a substitute bold sans serif T — David Carlisle 2 mins ago

Hi all
Is it possible to change the dot in i to a different color?

1:18 AM
@DavidCarlisle -- i was typing my comment as you were typing yours. just because an entity name appeared in an allegedly "ams" set in 9573-13 doesn't mean that anyone at ams was really familiar with it. i suspect the symbol might be found in the predecessor to math of comp in the 1940s or 1950s, but i'm not inclined to dig.

@dustin Not without a hack, I shouldn't think (e.g. dotless 'i' with a dot added separately).

@AlanMunn I'm sure you meant elegantly designed code, not "hack"?

Q: Umlaut dots in a different color

Kyle.Is there an easy way to do the dots of an o-umlaut in a different color than the o? I've already tried using the textcolor function in the color package, but I suspect that's the wrong way to go. I know I could just manually rotate and position some colored dots over an o, but I'm hoping someone ...

Q: How to make all i's and j's dotless, glyph substitution

vlgI just learned about the existence of dotless i's and j's- \i and \j, which happens to be how I write them out by hand. Would there be a way of making all occurrences of both appear dotless with some kind of character/glyph substitution or redefinition and not as hundreds of control sequences? Te...

@AlanMunn dotless j my one contribution to Unicode:-)

@DavidCarlisle @egreg is trying to remove the spaces, I hear.

@AlanMunn I could get U+0025 deprecated to stop his evil plans

@DavidCarlisle thanks

I was wondering about tex.stackexchange.com/questions/435070/…, which is put on hold as off-topic

@barbarabeeton I added a non-answer to \intercal question

indeed a similar question tex.stackexchange.com/questions/44045/… was also closed (as not a real question)
but related questions like https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/19553/where-can-i-find-people-for-hire-with-latex-skills-and-designer-skills
https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/231122/buy-help-for-latex/

https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/430133/where-do-we-find-a-latex-style-class-development-expert-for-hire
https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/434696/latex-typesetting-service are not marked as off-topic
so I'm wondering if this is off-topic or not?

@Marijn well it's bordering off topic and if you decided it was on topic you could close it as duplicate, so it doesn't really make any difference

@DavidCarlisle I agree that it doesn't matter :) but in light of the whole discussion about how to explain the rules and policies to new users and how to Be Nice and everything, I was thinking how to handle these cases with this question as an example

@Marijn It's not possible to get too worried about which reason a question is closed, if 5 people vote to close it gets closed they do not all have to vote for the same reason, and the system does not show which reason they used, so if two people voted that as off topic, one voted it as a duplicate and two as unclear, it could get shown as now, as closed off topic

8:54 AM
@DavidCarlisle ah, I didn't know that - I thought that if people chose different reasons they would all be mentioned. Don't know why I was thinking that though, since it's not true :)

@Marijn unless I am mis-remembering, if they close for duplicate of different questions the duplicates all get listed, but only one close reason is given, whichever wins by whatever voting system is used internally

yo'
9:09 AM
@DavidCarlisle well, certainly all dupes will appear in "linked" on the right

9:22 AM
@yo' ah over there yes, i was thinking of the "close" banner

yo'
@DavidCarlisle there I'm not 100% sure, I'd expect that all with at least 2 votes make it

@DavidCarlisle \Umathchar did not exist in such old XeTeX release, it was \XeTeXmathchar back then, so the test is using the TFM fonts for the old releases. The extra math fontdimens were always read only, there is no code in XeTeX that read them back, the math constants are always read from the OpenType font.

1:08 PM
@DavidCarlisle -- thanks. makes sense. i could try to ask ken whistler or asmus freytag to look into the unicode archives to find out where it came from. your finding out that it appeared in unicode 1.1 was a really good find. also the "additional mathematical symbols". (charles goldfarb never told me that, and he should have. i never saw anything that expanded the abbreviations.)

1:33 PM
Hmm, I am 11 points away from a palindrome. Bad planning! Guess I'll just have to let this one go.

yo'
@HaraldHanche-Olsen you could (un)accept some answers if you asked any questions

@barbarabeeton: hi! Watch the mail closely in the following days. :)

@barbarabeeton \intercal possibly predates the inclusion in Unicode. I think it was in the first release of amssym.tex

2:14 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen you need a +15 for an accepted answer and get @egreg to downvote you twice
@egreg yes but I think sgml must have got it from somewhere else as it would probably have called it intercal rather than intcal if it had taken it from tex
@KhaledHosny Good to see you here! aha, thanks that makes sense, blurg that's a shame but OK it's not a regression.

2:53 PM
@KhaledHosny Hi :)

@HaraldHanche-Olsen 11 is also a paliprime ;-)
In fact the smallest paliprime.

@marmot 1 :)

@JosephWright Hi

@PauloCereda This doesn't count. one digit numbers do not count.

@marmot huum you are considering w w^R then. :)

3:05 PM
@PauloCereda ???? (BTW neither Oh nor Ooh are palindromes, consider using oho instead ;-)

@marmot Oh it's a definition of a palindrome in formal languages. :) Let me find a reference...

yo'
@PauloCereda no! What about odd palindromes!

@yo' oopsie, you are right. :)
@marmot ^^

@PauloCereda reminds me of unavoidable patterns :)

btw, I was just today checking tips for tourists in Rio, and I wondered how difficult it is to get reliable ATM in the city

@PauloCereda ;-)

@yo' Better poke Paulo Ney, he is currently in Rio and can provide an accurate answer...

@PauloCereda @marmot doesn't consider that to be a palindrome, and it's not prime, apart from that it's a good example

@DavidCarlisle ooh
@DavidCarlisle 1 is prime for larger values of 2. :)

@marmot What about 2, 3, 5, and 7?

yo'
3:14 PM
@PauloCereda maybe for smaller values of 2, as 2 is a prime and 1 is just a tad bit less than 2

@PauloCereda Not a prime. :-P

Q: Why is 1 not a prime number?

brynWhy is $1$ not considered a prime number? Or, why is the definition of prime numbers given for integers greater than $1$?

@yo' ooh

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Well, is "A" a palindrome? If not , then 5 is also not a paliprime

@HaraldHanche-Olsen a cousin perhaps? :)

yo'
3:15 PM
@marmot sure it is! Trust me, one of my topics in maths is combinatorics on words.

@marmot I would say yes to both

Das Palindrome!

yo'
Even the empty word is a palindrome, so most people consider 0 to be palindromic, as its proper representation is just the empty word

@yo' I was just going to say that.

@yo' Yes

3:17 PM
@yo' Oh, cool, then my score on the linguistics site is a palindrome (because I do not have an account there ;-)

yo'
Palindrome is any sequence of symbols that is invariant under taking reversals.

@yo' Watch out for stray commas, though!

@PauloCereda Das Palindrom ;-)

@DavidCarlisle: the number of pages in my thesis is palindromic!
@UlrikeFischer ooh close :)

yo'
@marmot sure, it's floating in between 1 and 101 (for the assoc. bonus), but it's sure 101 when you ask for it (as you have to create an account to see your rep)
@HaraldHanche-Olsen they are ridiculous anyway from the beginning to the end.

3:18 PM
Ein Palindrom ist sehr gut!

@PauloCereda ;-). Did you like the swiss garnements?

@UlrikeFischer ooh they are fancy. :)

@yo' But if I have no account, than the score is undefined, also a palindrome. In particular, the imaginary part of all our scores is a palindrome! ;-)

Relevant to discussion:
@AlanMunn ^^ remember TMBG? :)

yo'
@marmot well, every number is a palindrome in a well-chosen basis :)

3:23 PM
@PauloCereda Gifts from a (now) swiss friend. She didn't fail in the interview.

@UlrikeFischer ooh a lovely reward. :)

@yo' Yes, sure, but this statement we had before here (unfortunately I don't know how to search this chat... ) We also figured that those with a 6-digit score cannot have paliprime reputation....

@PauloCereda :)

@marmot Haskell seems to disagree: After these definitions
isPalindrome :: Eq a => [a] -> Bool
isPalindrome xs = xs == reverse xs
it thinks isPalindrome undefined is … undefined (it throws an error).

I have to remove some of my comments (and, perhaps, even a meta question or both) due to having said too much in open access. I apologize up front; I mean no offense. This has something to do with my employment and unrelated to any of you.

@MdAyquassar Usually, if the original poster asks for deletion, we do it ...

@MdAyquassar Ah sorry. I misunderstood your comment.

5:16 PM
@MdAyquassar Hello!
Just so you know, you flagged for moderator attention in chat, not on the main site. That shows flags to every SE mod across the network, but only LaTeX mods can help you with your issue on the main site

@PauloCereda The moderator makes! Everything comment he takes! Satisfyingly e-ras-ed! you can just refresh the pages! They're gone before you can think it!

Hi folks. :) Visiting mod from GDSE. I've removed the chat comments as requested. Please let me know if I've erred or misunderstood the context.

@AaronHall :D

@DMGregory I think he was talking about on-site comments...
@MdAyquassar I think they mean you need to flag the specific comments you want erased, not the stuff in chat.

@MdAyquassar It would be nice to keep the meta question. It's a very reasonable question to have around, and although I agree with @DavidCarlisle that real examples rather than concocted ones would be better, it's still clear enough without them (and real examples have their own problems).

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Apparently. Nobody seems to have pick up on the fact that you're a bee.

@AlanMunn But I'm not!

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Yes, I realize that now looking more closely.

@AlanMunn A carnivorous fly. Not to be trifled with. (If you're a tiny insect.)

@HaraldHanche-Olsen A syrphid fly?

7:47 PM
@AlanMunn I think so, though I neglected to ask when I took his or her picture. I was in a somewhat uncomfortable position, lying down on a beach of rather large-ish pebbles in order to get close.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen If it is then it's not actually carnivorous.

@AlanMunn either way, calling it a bee is probably as bad as calling a Canadian American

@DavidCarlisle Maybe, although imitation to avoid predation probably means they like to be called bees. :)

8:21 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen @AlanMunn @DavidCarlisle I really like bees ... because I love honey liquor. ;-)

8:32 PM
Let me restrict myself to technical comments from now on to avoid self-removals and removal requests. Having said that, has there been any experience with introducing the qed tag; would you folks welcome it?

@MdAyquassar There certainly are a lot of qed questions. One thing to be aware of with retagging old questions is that it brings them to the front page, so retagging should ideally be done in small batches over a number of days. For a new tag that would require retagging it's best to pose it first as a meta question. (But it seems reasonable to me.)

@AlanMunn 652 results for QED. Whoever will do it, will have a lot to do.

@MdAyquassar Indeed.

@Sebastiano I have no idea. I also practically never download and have zero knowledge about fonts. Sorry.

yo'
@Sebastiano well, self-answered questions are a special thing. They have their place, but they need to be very well thought out. This one does not seem to be the case. For instance, I can very hardly imagine this question is actually useful to anyone.
Ok, now I realize that you answered a day after you asked the question, which is a different situation

@Sebastiano the question is OK but the answer isn't that great:-) Just replacing two symbols from a font is bad anyway, doing it via graphics rather than using a font is last resort solution that you wouldn't normally use.

yo'
Still, after reading the question I have no idea what you speak about (though the matter seems easy) and I only guess that you are looking for ways how to use a glyph in a place of another glyph

also why \resizebox{.09in}{.08in} if you specify both dimensions you distort the character, is that intended?

10:03 PM
@JosephWright I added a link to the changelog, currently it's got a duplicated title not sure what's best compromise between the gh and gh-pages view

@Sebastiano Congratulations! You again wasted the time of at least 7 other users by unnecessarily editing posts from the low quality or close review and thus removing them from the queue. As told you many times before: Please have a look at meta.stackexchange.com/a/190581 to understand why you should not edit such posts unless your edits substantially improve the quality of the post (little changes to the markup don't count into this category!)

@samcarter I am learning and YOU MUST ABSOLUTELY STOP DISTURBING ME

yo'
@Sebastiano sorry, I lost you now. What was this about?

@marmot Do not worry, I appreciated your availability. Thanksssssssssss

@Sebastiano You are not learning! You do it again and again.

10:11 PM
@DavidCarlisle Sir David I'm sorry for the slowness, but I'm using google translator. No absolutely did not distort the character. I have done a lot of tests and it seems perfect.

@samcarter okay, so I understand this is probably frustrating, but try to take a deep breath for a moment here.

@Sebastiano do not use the "Sir" prefix I have not got a knighthood. You are separately scaling the x and y dimensions which is either equivalent to just scaling one or (more likely) distorting the character.

@heather I've been writing the same things for a year. I do not understand what he wants to say.

@Sebastiano Perhaps it would be easier if you opened these posts to edit in a new tab, that way your edits don't affect the review queue.

@yo' I lost myself too.

yo'
10:14 PM
@Sebastiano well, I'm not sure it's good idea to try to improve others' posts if you are getting lost.

when you edit posts in queue, it removes them.

@Sebastiano you are being asked not to make trivial edits to posts

@DavidCarlisle what should I do? Do I have to touch them? is this simply?

@samcarter for what it's worth, i completely understand your comment, but I'd remove the "Congratulations! You again wasted the time..." bit and just explain without the sarcasm.

@Sebastiano also since you regularly say that you use google translate are you sure you should be editing posts at all? I use google translate too but I would not dream of editing posts on an Italian language site.

10:17 PM
@heather all the time he reproaches me and negatively votes my questions for the trivialities I do not even know of Adobe Illustrator.

@heather this.

@heather I tried multiple times to explain this in comments, first without sarcasm, but it just does not have any effect.

i think part of the problem is the language barrier here.

@DavidCarlisle I will not touch anything

Nevertheless, the sarcasm doesn't help anything.

10:18 PM
@Sebastiano is there a language you would rather speak in?

@Sebastiano I haven't seen your edits so i can't say if your posts are trivial or not but if a post is in a "low quality post" queue I'd expect any edit to be a substantial new text not just adding some punctuation or backticks
@heather Italian

@Sebastiano Firstly you have no idea for what I vote and for for I don't vote. And what does Illustrator have to do with this?

@DavidCarlisle could we bring someone over from a language learning SE site to help translate?

@heather Yes :-(

i feel this is mainly just a lack of communication.
@samcarter please take a step back and realize everything this user is saying is coming through google translate.

yo'
10:19 PM
@heather needless to say, a very long-standing one.

@heather there are lots of regulars in this chat who are Italian so that's not normally necessary (they seem to be hiding at present though:-)

@Sebastiano You're being very rude. That's not really accepted here.

@egreg please, can we wait until we can speak to this user in italian?

yo'
@egreg I believe that you can speak Italian in the chat.
@heather note that @egreg is Italian Language mod ;-)

@heather @egreg can probably manage Italian:-)

@samcarter That comes across very disingenuous/sarcastic. I assume you didn't mean it that way, so I suggest you edit that line so it reflects your sincere gratitude.

@egreg egreg no one has ever said it to me and I'm getting very sick of you. I do not do it on purpose and if you explain to me I delete everything and my account from here.

@egreg i'll just let you take it over here; you can speak italian and i can't, so.

@egreg I respect and I am a very polite person contrary to what you wrote.

Excuse me with all my heart to everyone for this discussion, but I believe in friendship and fairness. Excuse me again if I wrote in Italian, but I'm angry because this user has been targeting me for a year.

@Sebastiano La maleducazione non è accettabile comunque. E non ho visto polemiche ingiuste e inutili. Né commenti in maiuscole. Mi dispiace, ma sei in colpa.
@Sebastiano Nessuno ti ha bersagliato, tanto meno @samcarter. Ti ha fatto notare comportamenti non in linea con quanto si fa di solito in questi siti.

Dear moderators I apologize for this help but ask you to stop the obstructive attitude towards me by a year of @samcarter. I try to do my best and I happen to be wrong. @Sebastiano Finiamola qui. Ti prego di scusarti senza aggiungere commenti. Let's stop it here; please, apologize without further comments.

samcarter ha eliminato il suo commento e l'utente @Dr. Kurger qualcosa di simile se lo ricorda. Io ho postato un flag.

@Sebastiano you need to ask yourself why you get so many negative comments and negative downvotes, it is not just one person targeting you and you do not know who votes so unless someone tells you they have downvoted you shouldn't accuse them of doing so

10:29 PM
@egreg Io non sono assolutamente in torto.
Io mi scuso con tutti quanti e l'ho già fatto prima. Non sono in colpa assolutamente!!!

@Sebastiano You are at fault, at least today. Definitely.

@egreg for me the discussion is closed here but I am very convinced and those who know me know that when I'm wrong I immediately apologize immediately. But when I'm right and I'm very convoluted I do not accept that I have to excuse myself about something I have not done either voluntarily or as an act of challenge. I am a correct and polite person.@

@Sebastiano Actually, I wanted to upvote your posts just a second ago, to show my goodwill to you. ;-) You've just deleted your post. Too late for me. Sigh. No upvote, then.

@MdAyquassar I thank you for your kindness and your courtesy. I'm trying to eliminate everything and if I can also from the site

@Sebastiano maybe but if you edit posts in a language that you do not speak well then you can not be surprised if sometimes (or often) those edits are not well received. Your English is far far better than my Italian but still you often say that it is not good and that you use google translate to follow the conversation which means that you should be very careful with edits.
@Sebastiano There is on the site a good acceptance that not everyone speaks English as a first language and questions and answers do not need to be perfect english, but if you are editing someone else's text there is a higher expectation

10:40 PM
@DavidCarlisle s/bar/expectation/ (for google translate's sake)

@DavidCarlisle If the problem is my presence on this site I can permanently delete it.

@yo' just in time:-)
@Sebastiano no need for that!

@yo' I have not understood.

@Sebastiano I used an English idiom that did not translate well, I changed the text as @yo' suggested to a more direct form. (the last word of my comment above I changed from bar to expectation)

@egreg I'm sorry a lot that enrico was offended with me and went away. With sincerity, I thought about when we met on the phone a year and a half ago. he is an excellent person

@Sebastiano You're welcome here like anybody else.
@Sebastiano I'm not at all angry with you. I just wanted to make clear my position towards misbehaving in the chat.

@egreg I am not used to 43 years to lie. But I am sorry to lose my friendship with the people I respect and I consider excellent people.
@egreg It is not for me a mystery that I am very stressed with the school and for the actions of my leadership undertaken without a minimum of common sense with all the colleagues in my school.
I wish you a good continuation e vi voglio bene. Thanks to all those who have been close to me. Thanksgiving will also be formalized in the book I am writing with a prof. University of Physics. Goodnight to all.

Night. Be well!

@Sebastiano Consider using deepl.com/Translator instead of Google Translate: it's usually more precise for Italian and English.

10:54 PM
@egreg ma che dire della mia fede assoluta in google tradurre, mi sbaglio?

BTW I should say a huge thank you to you (collectively): for years I'd be working in LaTeX and google some question and find an answer here. Then one day I noticed an icosahedral icon in the right sidebar, followed it to some question about pretending to be elves, and finally made an account. I may spend 90% of my time over on RPG, but I always remember that it was (La)TeX that got me here =)

@nitsua60 glad to be of service:-)

11:16 PM
@Sebastiano I apologise for accusing you of wasting the time of other users and I'm sorry this escalate in public chat!

@samcarter ⟨humor⟩I think there is a need for an online generator of accusations. Let's assume you want to accuse me for wasting your time. You write \accuse{MdAyquassar}{time wasting}, and it generates a lipsum-long paragraph, however, adapted to my name and the purpose.⟨/humor⟩

@samcarter @Sebastiano I'm sure you are both good people, and there's a language barrier, just don't take THE RULES too serious. The site has mechanics and rules, we are just humans with different understanding how that may be meant in an optimal way.
