After all day reading about GitHub jokes, it occurred to me that I don't care. Then I got a job offer from them 10 minutes ago. Life is really really weird :D

Hi everyone, concerning the GitHub issue - I don't see any urgent need to move out anything right now, but I think we should start pondering what to do in the future. In principle I could use my texlive.info server to host a gitea/gogs/gitlab instance, but the server is getting crowded and if loads of projects move there I am not sure whether it will survive (it has other things to do, too!).

It would be nice if some hosting company could offer a server for free ... as support for our work ... just dreaming.

@UlrikeFischer Because subdomains won't work for usernames with underscore or period within the name (there's somewhere a FAQ on that).

@norbert Probably one for chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/78439/github-take-over (I think we want to have a place where we can find the discussion on this without other 'stuff' and without interrupting the other stuff here)

6:22 AM
@percusse From them? GitHub/Microsoft? Nice!

6:52 AM
@norbert @norbert as joseph says, the other chat room is better, but my preferred option was the one you didn't list, stay on github, although like other people I'm investigating gitlab just in case...

7:48 AM
@TeXnician Ah I see. I didn't need this yet, but decided to change the user name anyway.

@UlrikeFischer My first username contained a dot, so I had to do some research and stumbled upon some "disallowed" characters for use in Gitlab Pages. Unfortunately they do not warn about that.

@DavidCarlisle In other news, looks like the FAQ update project is going well

8:12 AM
@JosephWright new developments or do you just mean in general?

@DavidCarlisle In general: TUG2018 workshop session

8:28 AM
@JosephWright I suspect the main issue going forward with the faq will be limiting editing expectations to keep it as a curated list not just a new wikibook, hard to keep it curated but not stagnated...

@DavidCarlisle Yes, that's entirely true: periodic review is the best we can hope for. I'd like really to get everything 'looked over' now, then come back in say 18 months with little change in between

@JosephWright hmmm can I be of service?

@PauloCereda In all seriousness: are there any recording plans at the moment?

@JosephWright According to PN, IMPA all the recording infrastructure set, as they usually publish keynotes to YouTube. However, it is always advisable to ask. Since PN is already in Rio de Janeiro, he can offer a better overview.

@PauloCereda Ah, right: didn't think of the venue having this all set up (I'm used to having to sort it myself, or seeing Kaveh do the same)

8:43 AM
@JosephWright Perhaps we can write a joint email to the committee. :)

@JosephWright I added a link to the ID in the foot, allows browsing the site almost as conveniently and it's much faster to build.

@DavidCarlisle Looks good

@PauloCereda ^^^^

@UlrikeFischer oh no

12:41 PM
in case github dies a slow suffocation death, where will you take your code next?
@JosephWright I confirm, this was general. Even the SE devs thought it was crap and took it down a while back. I don't have the source handy, but it's somewhere in a blog post from the main site. I think the SE devs are concocting something new that is supposed to be based on the lessons learned from documentation, but better. Maybe, if they work without MS fiddling in the soup, they might actually come up with something useful, this time.

@thymaro For many people GitLab appears to be the first choice. There is a separate chatroom regarding that whole business by the way: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/78439/github-take-over

thx

@thymaro As @TorbjørnT. says, GitLab I guess if a move is needed, but I really don't see that at the moment

1:16 PM
Good news keep coming :) Apple deprecates OpenGL. I really don't get them anymore.
They don't even upgrade Accelerate framework and they talk about OpenGL as legacy :)

@percusse in favour of their Metal API. :) @egreg and @AlanMunn will become Panthera fans. :)

@PauloCereda Metal, shmetal. It would be just like their iphone chargers.

@percusse :D

@JosephWright it's just to see if there is already an alternative or if someone would have to come up with one. apparently SF has been in its down phase for quite a long time after more and more developers moved to github and bitbucket has never really caught on / is running on low fire, but running nonetheless.

2:20 PM
I seem to be stuck, here. Can someone help with illuminating? Going to sourceforge.net/projects/biblatex-biber/files/biblatex-biber I can "DOWNLOAD THE LATEST VERSION", which is said to be 2.11, but when I actually click the button, I get version 2.10. I conclude that SF doesn't host the latest version of biber. Which file would I need to download from, say github.com/plk/biber to get "biber linux x86_64" version 2.11?
github.com/plk/biber/tree/dev/dist/linux_x86_64 contains biber.sh but I think that's not what I am looking for. Or is it?

@thymaro can't you update your texlive or miktex and have it install, if your biber and biblatex get out of sync they moan a lot

@DavidCarlisle that is my fear precisely. Unfortunately, ubuntu miktex doesn't ship biber and people are advised to install it themselves.
I have biber 2.10 installed and it works, but I know about the sync problem and would like to avoid it before it becomes relevant (read: document doesn't compile correctly)

@thymaro I can't imagine why you'd use miktex on linux but anyway there's a 2.11 biber release archive at github.com/plk/biber/releases not that I have tried it

@DavidCarlisle I hear that a lot. Nevertheless, I would still like to make it work for testing purposes. :)
@DavidCarlisle no need. I will. thanks for the link.
arrrgh, I guess there's no way around building it myself. I didn't want to get into that kind of stuff, but now, here I am.
thanks for the help

2:42 PM
@thymaro I would have expected it to be under current sourceforge.net/projects/biblatex-biber/files/biblatex-biber/…. If not try development.

@ShreevatsaR hi mr. velociraptor!

@PauloCereda Hmm, given the sign, that's a dubious name... :)

@AlanMunn :)
It could be a velociraptor winning a race by crossing a red ribbon. :)

@PauloCereda Ever the optimist. :)

@AlanMunn You know me. :)

@PauloCereda That's why you're going to mirror your repos?

6:01 PM
@AlanMunn: by the way, I am sure you will enjoy the new features and helper methods in arara. :)
@AlanMunn I wanted to try the GL feature. :)

@PauloCereda ^^^

@AlanMunn ooh secrets
As if Brexit wasn’t enough to screw up half of Europe, the Brits have messed things up for the Netherlands quite some time ago. Now, I need your full attention for the ignorant yet kinda funny reason why the Dutch are called ‘Dutch’. As we all know, the German word for Germany is ‘Deutschland’. Now, for the British everyone who spoke a Germanic language was one and the same as Germany. Which resulted in the British calling people from Germany and The Netherlands both Dutch. As time passed, the Germans became known as…well, Germans. However, like an embarrassing nickname that the fat, ignora

@PauloCereda I love her description: Living the short girl life in the land of giants.
@PauloCereda The same problem persists. It's why @DavidCarlisle calls me American.

@AlanMunn :D
@AlanMunn David is mean

@DavidCarlisle you are not mean :)

6:18 PM
@PauloCereda I need a "CarLaTeX you're not mean": chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/41?m=44961117#44961117

@HaraldHanche-Olsen oh
@CarLaTeX hmmm :)

@CarLaTeX Doesn't this go without saying?

@CarLaTeX you are not mean :)

@AlanMunn I am mean
@HaraldHanche-Olsen It is not valid by you, it should be by @PauloCereda

@AlanMunn sorry I should have said Anglo-Scottish-Canadian-Domiciled-In-The-United-States-Of-America-n ?

6:23 PM
@DavidCarlisle Exactly!

@CarLaTeX I know, but you could use it to beat him over the head with

@CarLaTeX you mean like this?:
May 30 '17 at 10:03, by Paulo Cereda
@CarLaTeX You are mean!

@CarLaTeX Only to pizza aficionados.

@AlanMunn David and Paulo say I'm mean :'(

@CarLaTeX: you are not mean. <3
Nutella pizza is good.

Success ratio: 0% :(

@DavidCarlisle GL?

@PauloCereda yep:-)

@PauloCereda Nutella pizza is good but it's not a pizza

6:52 PM
@CarLaTeX Nutella pizza is good pizza. :)

@PauloCereda Oh no! Remember you're half Italian!

@CarLaTeX Hence the pizza authority. :)

@PauloCereda Your mother would not agree

7:14 PM
@PauloCereda Congratulations!

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@PauloCereda If you want to know everything about the Netherlands: youtube.com/watch?v=3k_E8huQR8I

@UlrikeFischer LOL
PONY PARK

@UlrikeFischer It confirmed what I thought about the German language

@DavidCarlisle It's all double Dutch to me.

7:30 PM
@PauloCereda Yes, it is good, because you can't destroy it by adding pineapples to it, simply because it cannot become worse. ;-)

@marmot oh

2 hours later…
yo'
9:41 PM
@PauloCereda don't let them spoil us nutella pizza!

@CarLaTeX @marmot the internet always provides:

@DavidCarlisle Yes, the internet is full of awkward stuff...

@DavidCarlisle This is just awful.

@AlanMunn I try to please

@DavidCarlisle :)

10:38 PM
@PauloCereda You're seriously risking to be deprived of your Italian nationality. :-D

11:08 PM
@DavidCarlisle creepy

@egreg @CarLaTeX I wonder if this is a coincidence: neither in Brazil nor in the UK there are marmots and people from there like pineapple and/or nutella pizza. ;-)

@thymaro The statistics in the link are very small. But there are many marmots in Italy, and Italians would never destroy a pizza with pineapple or nutella.

@marmot That can be a thing to investigate over.
@marmot Did you also consider invisible dwarves?

@egreg You mean nutella pizza is marmot and dwarf repellent or in regions with marmots and invisible dwarves people are more civilized?

@marmot The latter, of course. :-)

@egreg Hard to argue against that ;-)
