8:08 AM
Morning all

@JosephWright hello

Dammit, looks like I am having a problem with pythontex.
For no reason that I can see. Balls.
Bugs suck.

8:50 AM
Tracked down the problem. An out of date version of code in the LaTeX file I was using. I wonder if I should just put all that code in a separate file, which would then be easier to keep up to date. Thoughts?
Currently I'm including it in every LaTeX file, and of course updates to the code don't necessarily get reflected in older files.
Should that be like a package, or just an included file?

9:20 AM
@yo' oh my...

10:13 AM
@PauloCereda @yo' Next step: sermon with a beamer presentation!

10:28 AM
@CarLaTeX heavens forbid

@yo' Thanks a lot for the pictures! I'll work on a first draft later this afternoon.

@PauloCereda Better than a PP one. ;-)

@egreg :D

10:50 AM
@yo' so who won? (and btw. congrats to @egreg on the same occasion).
@FaheemMitha some also sting and bite, sometimes they piss or shit on you. some of them, when you want to kill them, they just fly away and go land somewhere else. bugs can be really tiresome.

^^^The orsetto di salvia (ursus parvulus salviaticus) is Italy's answer to Australia‘s koala bear. In comparison it's much smaller but a lot more agile and extremely shy. It's not interested in eucaliptus trees but loves sage. Therefore it is almost exclusively found in sagebrushes. We can all help to protect it by planting sage in our gardens thus making sure that its natural habitat survives.

@UlrikeFischer yay das bear!

@PauloCereda Das Bier. Der Bär. The difference is minimal but still noteworthy.

@thymaro ooh :)

@PauloCereda Der Bär - o urso, das Bärlein - o ursinho

11:02 AM
@UlrikeFischer Der kleine Bär!

So, can anyone remind me, if I want to stick some common code in a file, can I just do so, or should it be in a class file or something?

@FaheemMitha a file is fine, but if you use @ in commands you need to ensure that it has the correct catcode (a class file would do it for you).

@UlrikeFischer So a class file is better in general, and has no downside?
Or could I just create a small package?
I see I created a small package earlier. I could just mimic that. Anything to watch out for?

@FaheemMitha your own code. :)

I see that the package file used \RequirePackage instead of \usepackage.

11:15 AM
Hi, all. If there are any moderators around, could you please reopen the chat room Discussion between marmot and gusbrs? We would like to continue our discussion on Cool Text Highlighting in LaTeX. Thanks!

@gusbrs Done.

@StefanKottwitz: hi! When will you arrive in Rio?

@StefanKottwitz Thank you very much!

Found tex.stackexchange.com/a/19929/3406 which I already upvoted...

11:48 AM
@JosephWright I just encountered a problem with the Travis-CI for beamer: travis-ci.org/josephwright/beamer/jobs/381301985 From the log file it seems the installation of texlive has failed. The last successful build was in March - could this problem maybe caused by the transition from TL2017 to TL2018?

@PauloCereda You got mail :)

@FaheemMitha good style to do that but since one is defined by \let to the other, it doesn't actually make any difference.

@PauloCereda I planned to arrive on July 18

yo'
I hate meeting careless idiots :-(
@StefanKottwitz Ok so that's a day after me, I arrive 17 evening

12:14 PM
@DavidCarlisle Ok.
Should I describe a .sty file as a style file or a package?
In logs, I mean.

12:40 PM
@StefanKottwitz we arrive in the same day. :) But you probably arrive in GIG, I will arrive in SDU. :)
@TeXnician ooh <3

1:05 PM
@StefanKottwitz Thanks for unfreezing!

yo'
1:20 PM
Paris-bound, again after a year :)

@FaheemMitha use \ProvidesPackage{foo}

@DavidCarlisle Yes, I got that. I was asking how it's preferable to describe a .sty file.
As a package, or a style file?
Because a .sty file is both of these in some sense.

@FaheemMitha yes but you asked what to put in the log and if you use \ProvidesPackage{foo}[whatever] the it will write Package foo whatever into the log file, so it makes the choice for you

@DavidCarlisle I meant the version control log. As in the commit log. Sorry if that was unclear.
I mean, when I'm committing a .sty file. How should one describe it?
I guess you are talking about the log that TeX automatically generates when it runs.

@FaheemMitha ah, whatever you like. latex never uses "style file" for anything (since latex2.09) the .sty extension is just for compatibility with latex 2.09

1:31 PM
@DavidCarlisle I see. The term "style file" is no longer used?

@FaheemMitha not since 1993

So how are such things officially described?

@FaheemMitha packages are called packages, and files that just get loaded with internal code by packages eg dvips.def or pdftex.def as loaded by graphics package don't have a name at all, they are just files

@DavidCarlisle Ok. So the term packages is preferred then? Good to know.
Thank you for the clarification.

I learned what \localleftbox is doing in luatex ;-)

1:35 PM
@UlrikeFischer locally puts a box on the left

@DavidCarlisle :)

@JosephWright I just noticed i have a curl binary in \windows\system32 is that standard, and curl can be assumed to be there in windows?
@UlrikeFischer ^^ ?

@DavidCarlisle Can you assume anything is in windows?

1:50 PM
@DavidCarlisle curl --version doesn't output anything here. I can try on my other PC (which got already the newest update) later.

@UlrikeFischer seems odd. I suspect that "something" has installed it but most third party tools don't end up in the system32 directory, mine says
C:\Users\davidc>dir \Windows\System32\curl.exe
 Volume in drive C is OS
 Volume Serial Number is F42F-6E8D

 Directory of C:\Windows\System32

@UlrikeFischer @JosephWright oh apparently it is in windows since last month:

A: How do I install/set up and use cURL on Windows?

VonCStarting with the command Line in Windows 10 version 1803, you don't install curl anymore. CMD includes a native tar and curl, right from your regular CMD. See the announcement. C:\Users\vonc>C:\Windows\System32\tar.exe --version bsdtar 3.3.2 - libarchive 3.3.2 zlib/1.2.5.f-ipp

looks rather new if it is from 12/4 so it could be the "april" update. I got this on my main PC a few days ago.

2:06 PM
@yo' Is it meant in the surrounding context?

2:55 PM
@PauloCereda Just replied ;)

@TeXnician ooh now I am late two emails, hold on. :)

@PauloCereda :D

3:37 PM
@JosephWright just about got ctan upload via curl working from lua (@PauloCereda)

@DavidCarlisle :(

3:55 PM
@PauloCereda is that bad?

@DavidCarlisle no, on the contrary... It saddens me that I am still in a hurry with other things... :(

Jan 12 '16 at 12:15, by David Carlisle
@PauloCereda finished your thesis?

@DavidCarlisle yes... :(

@PauloCereda oi, illegal response, rebooting....

@DavidCarlisle oh I meant "yes" in the sense of "yes, that one thing that I worry".
@DavidCarlisle The answer is still "no". :)
Or "oh no"

3:57 PM
@PauloCereda prompted by me finding I had (at least) three copies of curl installed (standard win10, wsl/ubuntu, and cygwin)
@PauloCereda phew, order is restored.

@DavidCarlisle Let's fix that, shall we? Ask again, please.

Jan 12 '16 at 12:15, by David Carlisle
@PauloCereda finished your thesis?

@DavidCarlisle oh no
/quacks in despair
<3

@PauloCereda 6724

@DavidCarlisle ooh

4:17 PM
@DavidCarlisle That's a bit unkind.

@DavidCarlisle Cool
@PauloCereda I might have some other work for you ... (@DavidCarlisle knows something about it!)

@JosephWright ack

@JosephWright it's working apart from checking for errors is a bit off:
[["WARNING","Missing top level directory","ct"],
["WARNING","Missing README in top level directory","ct"],
["WARNING","Missing PDF documentation"]]
CTAN validation successful

@DavidCarlisle Sounds OK: on Windows we already need GOW or similar for zip, so we could go with 'This will work only if you have appropriate support installed'
@DavidCarlisle I look forward to seeing the Lua interface ... new target name or is it ctan --upload?

@JosephWright the exit status from curl is only reporting that curl worked not that it reported errors, I suppose I could grab the return boduy and look for error warning

4:26 PM
@DavidCarlisle ... or perhaps we'll need to rename the current ctan target (release?) ... something is certainly workable

@JosephWright not integreated it into l3build , so currently it's a self standing lua function

@DavidCarlisle Ah, right

@JosephWright the actual interface may need to be adjusted, currently you set up a table, and then call an upload function, with a global variabl eswitching between curl and ctan-o-mat
require("ctan-post")

-- ctan_post_command="ctan-o-mat"
ctan_post_command="curl"

ctan={}

ctan.pkg="ct"

--ctan.version={11.22,099} -- error 9table)
-- ctan.version= '2' -- OK coerced to string
ctan.version=[[2018/05/20]] --OK

ctan.author=[[me]]

ctan.email='me@example.com'

ctan.uploader=[[me]]

ctan.ctanPath=[[]]

-- multiple licences, as a table
ctan.license={'lppl','mit'}

-- alternatively a singe license as a string
-- ctan.license="gpl"

ctan.announcement=[[
test announcement
]]

ctan.summary=[[summary ]]
@JosephWright for l3build i'm not sure what the best interface would be for the "variable" bits most of the table is static per project but at least the version and announcement text needs to be generated each time, I suppose l3build has an idea about the version if it's just set it when making the release, but not sure what to do about the announcement?

4:50 PM
Holiday is over, tomorrow back to work :'( with no good news
A colleague of mine was moved in another office: guess who will have to do his job!

@CarLaTeX the office duck

@naphaneal you got it :):):)

5:15 PM
@DavidCarlisle I was thinking the same as Git: -m "<text>" or open the 'standard' editor (...) for a message
@DavidCarlisle Something like l3build upload -m "Something fun" --date 2018-05-19 v1.2.3, where the version tag is required

@JosephWright er ok I suppose I can work out "standard editor" from within lua, os.execute and hope $EDITOR is defined?? alternatively of course you could ask it to make some auto announcement from git log since the last announce..... I don't think I'll attempt l3build integration, I could check what I have in to a one-off repo or just mail it to you or...

6:16 PM
Environment "align" typesets multiple lines of equations with appropriate alignment, and "gather" does something similar but centers each line. What environment should I be using to get the centering that "gather" offers, but with a single equation number across two lines?

@1010011010 gathered inside equation.

Sweet! Cheers

@yo' First draft ^^
@yo' Which change requests do you have?
@yo' I was also wondering about the default colour. Do you have any preferences? Does your organisational unit has a special colour?

9:20 PM
I think yellow with beige doesn't look too good...

@samcarter Could the duck wear a Marmot jacket? ;-)

@G.Bay Yes, colours are not final yet. I'm more concerned about the general shape right now.
@marmot made from your fur or by the company of the same name?

Oh ok, as for the shape I think it's great :) I like the way he/she looks kind of sideways

@samcarter Not from the fur of a real marmot, of course!

@G.Bay Thanks :)
@marmot Puh! I was concerned about your safety!

9:28 PM
@samcarter It would be sooooooo wrong to wear the fur of a real marmot!!!!

not a real one, just a drawing of a real one, xD haha

@marmot ^^

@DavidCarlisle I'm looking over the upload code

9:47 PM
@JosephWright as you saw I checked it in, I was thinking no immediate rush to add it and it's safer checked in than not (also i was testing wacky characters didn't suffer code-injection style quoting problems so was adding and backing out stuff so havingit checked in seemed safer:-)

@DavidCarlisle Was going to be my suggestion too
@DavidCarlisle Probably we can go with something along the lines you have: I can see a table for the data working, with some long options for any overrides at the command line (--note and --message). What is perhaps more tricky is what one calls the target, and whether it does build/bundle/upload in one.

@JosephWright I'd separate them by default I think it's still useful to do the current ctan target to check things are all in line for a full release, even if you don't actually release, actually hitting the ctan servers is a more intrusive operation, having it in l3build makes it more convenient than the upload form but it shouldn't be too convenient

@DavidCarlisle Yes, sure
@DavidCarlisle I mean for example one might have two targets, or add --upload to the current one, or ...
@DavidCarlisle Also, if you go for two targets, what happens if someone does upload without ctan (or whatever we rename to)
@DavidCarlisle We probably need a bit of brainstorming on target names ...

@JosephWright well if there is no zip around then it will fail. If there is an old zip it could pass unless we automated some check (as ctan do) that tried to check the specified release against the actual content
@JosephWright it's very noticeable how much open source linux-flavoured code microsoft is adopting these days

@samcarter Sooooo good! ;-) ;-) ;-)

Hi guys, just To the point, I need to do" energy cycle", like the ones used in chemistry and physics. Do you have any post in mind? To see as an example

10:21 PM
@santimirandarp It is better if you share a link of what you have in mind and generally it is better to ask on the main site (there's no fee nor Fee ;-)

Good morning :-) to the all users into chat.
Is there anybody that can help this user? He not have an answer. Thanks to all. bye

Q: Problem having a Nomenclature with multicolumn categories and label alignments

G. CuticchiaI'm trying to make a list with nomenclature using the nomencl package. I have been looking for solutions about what I want, but I've not been lucky so far (and I'm not an expert in these matters). I want 3 categories (Units, Prefixes and Acronyms), but I would want them to split in columns separ...

user280247
@marmot i supposed it would be a duplicate, although I didn't find a question on same topic. goo.gl/images/gNcps9

@santimirandarp it looks like a basic rectangular commutative diagram so amscd or tikz-cd or xypic should be able to cope I would guess

11:16 PM
@DavidCarlisle I agree, but there also more fancy options. Hard to tell without a picture.
