is there a way for equations to be handled automatically? I mean - referencing them. It seems that the equation numbers are generated automatically, yet I still have to hard code labels into them... but maybe there's not an easier way, just thought i'd see

@baxx This is just a chat. You might get more feedback by asking the question on the main site. And you'll receive most feedback if you provide an MWE.

2 hours later…
5:00 AM
@baxx Use \label{...} after \begin{equation}, and \ref{...} as usual, see here: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/14591/…
@baxx or, better, \eqref{...} from amsmath package.

@ChristianHupfer I just pinged you on FB.

@Johannes_B I answered you there and via twitter and mail and whatever ;-)

@AlanMunn yes, the very same. :)

(Note that, contrary to popular opinion, twitter's bird is not made up entirely of arcs. There are 3 cubic bézier's in there as well.)
@JosephWright I finally sat down with a piece of paper and figured out the arc syntax, proof of pudding above. Still haven't figured out if there's a better insertion point, but at least I have something that works.
The one bit I haven't done is the rotation of the x-axis. Shouldn't be too hard, but given that Gecko doesn't bother then I'm considering that an optional bonus for when I next have a minute.

Does someone understand the following question? Why would one need an example for a slide with text?

Q: Why beamer theme doesn't provide an optional ending slide(e.g., Thank You)?

alhelalSo far as I know maximum people end their slide presentation with a "Thank You" slide. There are varieties to make the slide. Beamer theme provide some style so one can easily use these style typing some simple command. This features are very useful for newbies. They have not to worry about inte...

Q: Is there a general rule when to write pgfplots keywords together?

studentWhen using tikz especially pgfplots I find it often difficult to remember if a keyword is written together or separaded. Examples for keywords written together are: xticklabels enlargelimits ymajorgrids and many more. Examples of keywords written separated are: extra x tick label y doma...

@Johannes_B If you don't know how to type huge and centered with a background watermark image you might ask this

@Johannes_B I think it's better it remains closed
@DavidCarlisle Can you see also tldoc@tug.org? I've just sent the Italian documentation revised...

1:13 PM
@CarLaTeX I'm not subscribed, it will appear here tug.org/pipermail/tldoc but I'm not sure how often the archive page updates (nothing in 2018 currently)

@DavidCarlisle Thank you, I saw that link, too, but as you say, there's nothing recent...

@CarLaTeX nothing arrived in TL-doc so far...

@CarLaTeX I think postings from non subscribed people on the tug lists are moderated so your message is probably in a queue

@DavidCarlisle Yes, maybe, if I remember well I think it happened also the first time I wrote to tex-live@tug.org... @PauloCereda Thank you! I'll ask you again tomorrow and, if nothing arrived, I'll re-send it...

@CarLaTeX Did you register?

1:20 PM
@PauloCereda No

@CarLaTeX ah I think unregistered mail does not go to a queue, it's automatically disposed. Maybe you could register, the traffic is very low.

@PauloCereda I'll wait a bit and if the mail doesn't appear I'll register before re-sending :)

Woohoo! Three of the four starred posts in the side bar are mine. (Not that I validate my existence by such things ...)

@JosephWright @DavidCarlisle regarding tex.stackexchange.com/questions/417100/…: somewhere in texlive 2016 the behaviour natwidth/natheight-key must have been changed (perhaps along with the bb-key changes). The following doesn't show an image in TL16 and 17 but in TL15.
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\begin{document}
% if this is used both images appear:
%\includegraphics[width=64mm]{example-image.png}

\includegraphics[width=64mm,natwidth=10cm,natheight=10cm]{example-image.png}

\end{document}

@DavidCarlisle Busy with a 3-on-3 tournament all morning. Much funner than chasing for missing %. :-P

2 hours later…
4:21 PM
@UlrikeFischer I'll take a look later

@JosephWright No hurry. Btw: there is a typo in the l3draw docu, the circle intersection has an argument missing (nnnn instead of nnnnn).
@JosephWright and there is this
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{l3draw}

\begin{document}

\ExplSyntaxOn
\draw_begin:

\draw_end:
\ExplSyntaxOff

\end{document}
! Arithmetic overflow.
\__dim_eval:n ...\__dim_eval:w #1\__dim_eval_end:

4:59 PM
@UlrikeFischer it never really did anything useful in pdftex as (unlike latex/dvips) you can't really lie about the original size, as pdftex knows the size, but we should check what it's doing

@DavidCarlisle Yes I know. I remember the same discussion about the bb-key some weeks ago. But it should either give an error or do something more or less sensible and not simply eat the picture ...

@UlrikeFischer sure, will look (but was driving and just got here so haven't looked what it is doing yet)

5:21 PM
@DavidCarlisle Thank you!

@CarLaTeX I could have done the translation for you, too: Sono bravo in italiano

@DavidCarlisle Next time, don't worry, TeX Live 2018 is coming soon :):):)

I have the impression the linux people should take over the miktex support. There is again a question about miktex on linux.

@UlrikeFischer :)
@UlrikeFischer I don't get why people do that: I know Christian is experimenting, but really MiKTeX is Windows-focussed
@UlrikeFischer I know :)
@UlrikeFischer Fixed in the Git version: I knew about the issue, but there is lots to do so I'm trying to prioritise
@UlrikeFischer I expect to do another l3draw release within a few days

5:37 PM
@JosephWright No hurry. When I see something I mention it but I don't expect it to be resolved immediatly. I could also add issues if you prefer. But I didn't want to clutter it with issues about small typos or already resolved things.

@CarLaTeX: your message is in the spam folder.

@PauloCereda But I see it here: tug.org/pipermail/tldoc/2018q1/thread.html
@PauloCereda With attachment removed...

@CarLaTeX: I still believe it's advisable to register because it gives more credibility being part of the list than rather an occasional sender, and it also allows the current Italian contributors to comment.

@UlrikeFischer At present this is all very much in flux, so reporting here is probably best :)

@PauloCereda Done

5:56 PM
@CarLaTeX Grazie. :)

Frustrated swearing about MSWord from the other room. The problem with MSWord is all you LaTeX guys. As more smart people use LaTeX, Word gets dumber and dumber.

@AlanMunn ooh I am smart
By average, at least

6:33 PM
What is your favourite group of programs/tools for programming in LaTeX?
I am using texMaker with MikTex.

hi, my question tex.stackexchange.com/questions/200643/… has been marked as a duplicate of tex.stackexchange.com/questions/42096/… while I explicitly wrote that my question is about something else. Now I have edited in an explicit sentence about this, but the question is still marked as duplicate. How can I appeal this?

@Harald wow thanks

@watchme Some people here use vim, others use emacs. Some tried using vim and haven't been seen or heard from since.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen oi

@gioele I've voted to reopen it. A few other votes will happen soon I suspect.

6:42 PM
@AlanMunn done.
@AlanMunn: Speaking of dictionary, I read one once. I found out the zebra was the culprit!
/sad trombone

@PauloCereda: the aardvark is only a red herring

@gioele ooh
@gioele That reminds me of an episode of Black Adder. :)

@AlanMunn zed-bra. :)
@samcarter can we have a zebra duck, please? :)

@gioele The answer to your question might depend on the citation style you use, since you may need to adapt another entry type for this.

6:54 PM
A friend of mine asked me a question to which I don't know an answer. It is concerning the vertical penalties and pagebreaks. He wonders whether there is an existing package, that sets a single page \raggedbottom if the vertical glue/badness excedes a more or less reasonable amount (in order to prevent pages with very large vertical widespace). Does anyone know a package which does so?

7:07 PM
@Skillmon do you mean some command that you can add to the page cf \enlargethispage or a modified output routine that automatically switches between ragged and flush bottom?

my question has been reopened, thanks everyone. :) @AlanMunn: I would not mind style-specific answers

@gioele What style do you use, though?

@egreg:
Thanks a million! That's something I've been wondering for a long time! Who would have imagined that a single % can make such a difference! (\vspace{1cm} vs. \vspace{1cm}%)!!! — dontpanic 2 hours ago

@DavidCarlisle hmmm

@AlanMunn: for these dictionary things: alpha, unsrt, acm and other natbib based style

7:20 PM
@gioele ok

@DavidCarlisle the latter.
@DavidCarlisle The idea was to further automate the output and minimize the user interaction with it.

@egreg I fully agree with your statement, that's why I wrote "almost" ;-)

7:58 PM
@Skillmon possibly this (untested)
\gdef \@makecol {%
   \ifvoid\footins
     \setbox\@outputbox \box\@cclv
   \else
     \setbox\@outputbox \vbox {%
       \boxmaxdepth \@maxdepth
       \unvbox \@cclv
       \vskip \skip\footins
       \color@begingroup
         \normalcolor
         \footnoterule
         \unvbox \footins
       \color@endgroup
       }%
   \fi
   \let\@elt\relax
   \xdef\@freelist{\@freelist\@midlist}%
   \global \let \@midlist \@empty
   \@combinefloats
   \ifvbox\@kludgeins
     \@makespecialcolbox
   \else

8:10 PM
@DavidCarlisle doesn't seem to work unfortunately :(

@Skillmon it would work, but the details may not be quite right, I might try a test later, also I set .9\textheight as an arbitrary cutoff point which you might want to change

@DavidCarlisle I did change it to \textheight in my most exaggerated test, it didn't work.
@DavidCarlisle I did test with the following contents:
\begin{document}
\lipsum[1-2]
\rule{\textwidth}{.4\textheight}
\rule{\textwidth}{.4\textheight}
\end{document}

@Skillmon oh I see..

@DavidCarlisle it seems to always have \ht\@outputbox=\textheight.

@Skillmon yes that's what the i see above means (update coming up)
@Skillmon change the inserted line to these two lines
\setbox\z@\vbox{\unvcopy\@outputbox}%
\ifdim\ht\z@<.9\textheight \raggedbottom\fi

8:39 PM
Does Linux have an open command? e.g. on a Mac open foo.tex will open that file in the designated GUI app for that file type.

@AlanMunn I vaguely remember something like that from my days on ubuntu. I'll se if I can find out more.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen It's very helpful to open package source: open `kpsewhich pkg.sty`

xdg-open opens a file or URL in the user's preferred application. If a URL is provided the URL will be opened in the user's preferred web browser. If a file is provided the file will be opened in the preferred application for files of that type. xdg-open supports file, ftp, http and https URLs. xdg-open is for use inside a desktop session only. It is not recommended to use xdg-open as root.
@AlanMunn Yes, I do something like it every day.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Ok thanks.

@AlanMunn I have an alias kpseless which is aliased to less $(kpsewhich $*) so that I can type kpseless hobby.sty and see the source for the hobby package. (It's astonishing how many times I have to look at the source of my own packages to see how I did something.)

yo'
8:48 PM
@AlanMunn This goes to my tex-meme bookmarks folder :-)

@yo' This was combined with an elitism analogy: as the rich send their children to private schools, (i.e. LaTeX), the public school system (i.e., Word) declines and the rich don't care. :)

yo'
@AlanMunn yeah, but here it's twisted around: the elite use the public system and the plebs use the private system :-)

@DavidCarlisle I don't get why this works and \@tempdima=\ht\@outputbox \ifdim\@tempdima<.9\textwidth doesn't.
@DavidCarlisle almost forgot: Thank you very much for your time and effort!

@Skillmon if you go setbox0\vbox{....}\ht\0=\textheight then box 0 as ht\textheight but if you unvbox it into a temp box and measure the height of that, you find the natural height
@Skillmon and the output routine has previously done essentially that, force outputbox to have textheight, whatever its contents
@Skillmon so much more polite than @egreg

@DavidCarlisle That I didn't know (I've never messed with it before).

9:11 PM
@yo' Yes, that protest went on deaf ears. :)

@yo' I like it that way... Or even better: Imagine a world without Word!

Oct 19 '16 at 22:51, by egreg
@DavidCarlisle My answers, contrary to yours, are never wrong. :P

Hey!
\fancyhead[RE,RO]{\setbox88\hbox{\rightmark}\smallcaps{\rightmark}\hspace*{\dim‌expr\columnwidth-\wd88\relax}}

yo'
@Skillmon well, a former TUG president once suggested: "Why isn't LyX the default text editor in linux distros? We should aim at this!"

@Aurelius \setbox88?

9:17 PM
lol
@egreg is not right?

@Aurelius No.

@egreg thanks

@Aurelius What's wrong with \fancyhead[RE,RO]{\textsc{\rightmark}\hfill}?

@yo' Sadly this wouldn't change much, the majority of the plebs is not even using Linux.

How so? I am trying to aling the head to the gap of a twocolumn document
@egreg I'll take a picture

9:19 PM
@Aurelius Or \\fancyhead[RE,RO]{\makebox[\columnwidth][l]{\scshape\rightmark}}?

@yo' Please no.

yo'
@AlanMunn I'm not about to further comment on this. I was just saying.

@yo' :)

@PauloCereda ^^^

9:23 PM
@egreg that's the top of the document, the header. I was trying to align the word DESCRIPTION with "board" for example. In other words the header to the column separator

@UlrikeFischer That's a referee duck, not a zebra duck.

@UlrikeFischer looks like a prisoner in an old-fashioned movie.

@Skillmon Those are horizontal.

@AlanMunn trump levels of modesty

@AlanMunn job description for zebras ;-)

9:27 PM
@egreg thanks! you always leave me speechless

@DavidCarlisle Not helped by the adoring crowds. ^^^

9:38 PM
@yo' -- huh? i don't remember hearing that.

@Aurelius You're welcome

@AlanMunn my bad, but it was my first association.

@Skillmon You need to watch more hockey, and less old timey movies. :)

@AlanMunn I'm more the football person (NOT hand-egg).

yo'
@barbarabeeton mail sent
@AlanMunn don't speak about that sport.

9:49 PM
@yo' Both our countries didn't do so well. But with no NHL players it's not so surprising I think.

yo'
@AlanMunn yep, exactly. Actually, Slovaks, having a lot of people in KHL, could have done better.

user image
7
@AlanMunn better?

@UlrikeFischer Wow! That's perfect!

@UlrikeFischer -- you must know some zebras very well!

@UlrikeFischer how exactly do you cross a zebra with a duck?

9:55 PM
@DavidCarlisle Very carefully, and with a lot of kicking and quacking.

@DavidCarlisle I take the duck in the arm and then wait for the cars to stop ...

@UlrikeFischer :-)
