Hello everyone!

@HenriMenke Hi

9:50 AM
@JosephWright To be honest, I didn't. :)
@HenriMenke Quack!

@Johannes_B Any ideas on how to improve my post here? texwelt.de/wissen/fragen/17975

10:07 AM
@HenriMenke I have typeset one minimal example with ConTeXt so far. I can't give any valuable input, sorry :-)

@JosephWright As long as Gisele was in the highlights, it was a good abridged version. :)

10:28 AM
Hi, I read in the extdash manual something about halfspace. I want to know whether there is such a space before and after \textemdash command in latex?

10:43 AM
@nima There is not space added around \textemdash by default.

@he
@HenriMenke sorry, so there is a emdash at the end of a line hence the following warning: Overfull \hbox (0.51694pt too wide) in paragraph. What would do? I thought if there'd be a thin space before and after that by removing that I could resolve the warning.

11:20 AM
@nima Change a word in the lines, then TeX will reevaluate all the breakpoints. Or \usepackage{microtype}.

I already use microtype

@nima Then just reword the sentence slightly.
@nima Or if you can't for some very strange reason, add \looseness=1 before the paragraph.
@nima You might also be interested in this answer.

@HenriMenke let me ask you, on your final compilation do you have these kinds of warnings which you neglect trating them? This \looseness=1 only applies to this paragraph?

@nima I don't understand the first question. If I neglect overfull box warnings? They are obviously a sign of a poorly formatted output and should be eradicated for superior typesetting quality.

yeah

11:26 AM
@nima \looseness only applies to the paragraph immediately following the statement.

ok, thank you Henri

@PauloCereda All the starred messages including an image are images of ducks! What are you doing to this chatroom? ;-)

Let's say I am coding a tikzpicture. I want to have some knobs to tune it, so I add something like \def\chainshift{7em}. Is it possible to make the scope of the \chainshift macro only local to the tikzpicuture?

@HenriMenke There is an old question about the differences between latex and context: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/29979/… which could interest you. (My opinion hasn't really changed over the years. I'm keeping in touch with context as it some parts is it better than latex but it is still not much fun and has for me the feeling of a propietary software.)

@UlrikeFischer Thanks for the reference! I have just started using ConTeXt and have not yet understood all the concepts behind it. Why does it feel like proprietary to you?

11:34 AM
@UlrikeFischer All manuals i have seen so far as well as the presentation slides by Hans are just a pain to my eyes.

@Johannes_B I totally agree. They just try to show off everything they got in one document.

@HenriMenke because a small team decides what and how they add (and remove and change) to context (and luatex). Ask @DavidCarlisle about the incompatible changes in luatex 0.95, the justification was always "we don't need it in context". One shouldn't forget that pragma is doing business. But this doesn't mean that one shouldn't use it: it is very powerful, but one should realize that there are more differences than simply the names of commands and the style of arguments.

@HenriMenke Those are my companions resting in my desk. :)

@UlrikeFischer Of course, the recent LuaTeX changes bring a lot of inconvenience to those who rely on the exact interface, but in this TUGBoat Hans laid out the reasoning behind these changes and I consider them for good after reading. Also I consider it an advantage that ConTeXt is used commercially. This way the development has a lot more momentum a rich feature set establishes.

@UlrikeFischer A small team decide about LaTeX too ;-)

11:44 AM
@JosephWright And one member of team breaks it. :)

@PauloCereda One or two ...

@JosephWright :)
In other news, did you guys see this? openstaxcollege.org
Very nice initiative. :)

@UlrikeFischer How big is Pragma?

@HenriMenke @JosephWright: I don't mind the changes, or that a small team decides it -- that's unavoidable -- but the communication. If latex (or expl3) changes something the team puts a lot effort to keep the inpact on packages and users to a minimum and to communicate the changes. I quite regularly see on the context list someone asking why something now fails and getting the answer "we removed this as we no longer need it" or "we changed the internal code basis".
@Johannes_B No idea.

@UlrikeFischer Agreed. LaTeX tries hard to keep backards compatibility, whereas it seems that LuaTeX just has own documents in mind.

11:55 AM
ooh I could write my thesis using XeTeX, it would be daring. :) It's like Russian roulette for TeX. :)
I LOL'd. :)

Q: Checking environment in order to end it

Andreï KostyrkaI used to typeset verse with memoir package using some heavy \vspace trickery. @JosephWright C'mon, man. :)

6:02 PM
@PauloCereda I don't understand the "targeted for the community" part. And tagging is to a large degree irrelevant (experience users can retag if needed.)
@PauloCereda And the answer to "Is it clear?" is always "Yes, I know exactly what I mean." :)

@AlanMunn I meant if the question was not target to a particular user. But you know, language barriers. :)
@AlanMunn :)

@PauloCereda Do we ever get such questions?

@AlanMunn The bloke in the meta was trying to write one. :)

@PauloCereda Actually I think he was just trying to get any expert to look at his question.

@AlanMunn I have no idea, actually. :)

@PauloCereda Quack quack quack?

@JosephWright Something along these lines, yes. :)

7:56 PM
@PauloCereda Offer up some mathematics about gaming and they will really call you weird. By the way the duck is very happy in his new home. He holds high ground and provided constant visual supervision of the grandkids when they are in my office. Thanks again.

@PauloCereda The classical duck sketch in german is youtube.com/watch?v=0jOtOIOX3RI. It contains the well known phrases "Wenn Sie die Ente hereinlassen, lasse ich das Wasser heraus." and "Die Ente bleibt draußen!" People are putting rubber ducks on Loriots grave because of them. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herren_im_Bad.

8:10 PM
@PauloCereda The final count said 762 km. :) But the greatest part was motorway. :( Three big mountain passes: Moncenisio (2083 m), Iseran (2770 m) and Piccolo San Bernardo (2188 m). But I started from near Genoa, just 220 km to Turin. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Col_de_l%27Iseran It's the highest paved pass in the Alps.
@PauloCereda Oh, and a “Stazione di servizio” on the motorway offered a “Cereda Sandwich”.

@Kurt The question is perfectly valid. Whether the OP cares about it or not is irrelevant, isn't it? It could be answered as it stands. (Of course, people may be less motivated to answer it if the OP no longer cares, but that doesn't make questions and answers invalid.)

@Kurt Is Wingdings different from Wingding? I actually have the latter installed for use with pdfTeX. If anybody ever shows any interest in the question, I could post the method I used, I expect.
@Kurt Actually, I have Wingdings. Just the directory/packages is wingding. I have 1, 2 and 3, it seems in truetype format with matching TFMs etc.
@Kurt Others may disagree with me ;).

@Kurt It's not a great question, but it also seems like there's probably an answer that would be useful to others.

@cfr No, I think the font wingdings or wingding are the same. I heard both variants for the same font from my students ...

@cfr Where did it come from?

@cfr The correct name of the windows font is wingdings, I just checked it ...
@AlanMunn Well, my idea was to close it because the zip file seems to contain all what is needed, but the op was not able to install it. Because there were no reactions from others I think it is not very interesting to other users ...

@Kurt Right, but if the zip file is all that is needed, perhaps adding an answer on how to install it would be sufficient.

@AlanMunn The font? Or the directory? The font is either from Mac or a version of Word I had, I guess. (I think.) The directory I probably named according to the Berry schema etc., if applicable, or invented something, if I couldn't find anything. Why?
