@yo' :)

yo'
@egreg oh you're still alive awake :)
ok, gotta go. I drank a lot

@yo' Naughty boy!

yo'
@egreg when you're served guláลก and Czech beer, you can't resist :)

@yo' :) Dark or light?

yo'
@egreg light. In general, beer means standard light (Pils type, lager). Dark would be specified ;)

12:26 AM
I like lulatex, I switch my makefiles to use it instead of pdflatex. (the name is harder to remember, that is the only problem I see with it so far). But now I can compile 7,000 pages pdf file without latex running out of memory like before.
thanks for those who wrote lulatex (may be they should called it lux, easier to write, I always make typos writing lululatex)

@egreg @JosephWright Is there a way of getting arguments passed using the expl3 syntax to behave like 'regular' arguments (#1, #2 etc.) without needing to add \expand... everywhere? I feel like I must be missing something obvious because it seems to make everything much harder!

3 hours later…
5:47 AM
@cfr You mean the fully expanded #1 before it is placed? Like \exp_args:?

1 hour later…
7:01 AM
@cfr Don't understand! Something like \cs_set_protected:Npn \my_foo:n #1 { \tl_to_str:n {#1 } } } does pass #1 as normal (after all, we can't change how TeX works). Do you mean the \keys_set_known:nnN case? There, you have to have some way of handling the unknown keys and again it's not down to expl3 that they are not in say #1.

Good maen

@PauloCereda move voting oportunities: We launched Portuguese and Japanese Stack Overflows, our first non-English SOs. Portuguese is now officially our second fastest-growing community ever after hitting 10,000 questions in only 9 months.

@DavidCarlisle Not a snowball chance in hell I'm gonna join any Portuguese-related Q&A thingy. :)

12:48 PM
@PauloCereda maybe I should join, my Portuguese skills are legendary

@DavidCarlisle Believe me, you'd be a top user in no time. :)

@PauloCereda talking of "top user" have you seen "Kind Hearts and Coronets"? I caught it (again) on some channel one evening over Christmas and it gave me some ideas for this site...

1:14 PM
@JosephWright is enough in svn to build xelatex with l3build?

@DavidCarlisle Because of the opera? :)

1:43 PM
@DavidCarlisle Huh?

2:43 PM
Hi guys.

@FaheemMitha Hello.

Hey @PauloCereda.

3:11 PM
oh lawd

3:47 PM
I found a beautiful postcard in my mailbox; it comes from Brazil, does anybody have an idea about the sender? :)

@egreg awww <3

@PauloCereda <3 too

Good maen...

@ChristianHupfer Hello!
@egreg I better start writing now, or I won't have enough time. :)

4:06 PM
@JosephWright tempest in a teapot.
You can be in Nature too! Just write a silly paper with controversial claims.

@JosephWright checkengines = {"etex"} in build-config means it only checks etex doesn't it?

@DavidCarlisle Yes
@DavidCarlisle Doing different formats might still be a bit tricky: I've not really addressed that other than hack in a step so the tests can work base
@DavidCarlisle Current set up relies on checkopts = "-translate-file ./ascii.tcx -efmt=latex.fmt -output-format=dvi"
:19456765 Perhaps might work with a bit of hacking about to set up that string to be correct plus building the format file for XeTeX in the right place

@JosephWright I gave up at xetex: unrecognized option `-output-format=dvi'

4:22 PM
@DavidCarlisle Yes, I saw that too but it doesn't stop XeTeX running

@JosephWright oh yes it is running, I see now

@PauloCereda: Hello, I was distracted beecause (:D) I had to answer a phone call

Hello, I've not been on here for a while... in the meantime I see that at least one regular contributor has changed their name - not that I care what people call themselves, but something I have noticed before is that it can be quite confusing reading the replies to questions/answers when names are no longer what they were... Someone @new_name posts a comment, then the OP replies with @no_longer_their_name... can be hard to unravel if there are a few comments.

@DavidCarlisle Perhaps
checkopts = getopts(engine)

function getopts(engine)
  if engine=="xetex"
    return "-fmt=xelatex.fmt"
  fi
  return "-translate-file ./ascii.tcx -efmt=latex.fmt -output-format=dvi"
end

@JosephWright ooh will try later, thanks

4:27 PM
@DavidCarlisle Also needs something like
function format ()
  unpack ()
  -- Much the same as the standard unpack approach: run from 'here' so
  -- the relationships are all correct
  os.execute (
      os_setenv .. " TEXINPUTS=" .. unpackdir .. os_pathsep .. localdir
      .. os_concat ..
      "etex -etex -ini " .. " -output-directory=" .. unpackdir ..
      " " .. unpackdir .. "/latex.ltx"
    )
  -- As format building is added in as an 'extra', the normal
  -- copy mechanism (checkfiles) will fail as things get cleaned up
  -- inside bundleunpack(): get around that using a manual copy

@PauloCereda: Paul Cereda in Jubob's application for TUG grant :D

in base/build.lua (all untested)

@ChristianHupfer <3

@PauloCereda: And you encouraged him... :-P

yo'
'lo!

4:29 PM
@JosephWright thanks

@ChristianHupfer It's my job. :) Do you have a TUG membership? :)
@yo' Tom! :) Are you ok?

@PauloCereda: Not, yet, why?

yo'
@PauloCereda Yes, I am. I rarely visit kosher shops

@ChristianHupfer Could you please add yourself to the list, please? :)
Pretty please, with sugar on top. <3
@yo' I was worried.

yo'
@PauloCereda sugar on top ... icing ... ice ... snow ... snow battle! :D

4:30 PM
@PauloCereda: Even if you would mean it seriously... My contribution to this site is still very limited

@yo' Yay! Wait a minute, I've never seen snow. :)

yo'
@PauloCereda everybody but couple dozen people in the whole France is pretty ok. I've passed through place de la République and the memorial there is amazing. I couldn't but stop for couple minutes in silence.

@yo': Oh, you're in Paris??

@ChristianHupfer Christian, please. It's not about a level of contribution. :) You help, comment, write answers, ask questions, join the chatroom fun, and you are a cool dude. So there's no reason for you to not add yourself in that list. :)
@yo' :(

yo'
@PauloCereda what a pity :( Soft snow is a lot of fun: you can make snowballs an throw them on people without a fear of injury, you can put snow behind someone's collar from the back to surprise them, or on their lower back, you can build snowmen or igloos or snow castles.
@ChristianHupfer yes, I happen to.

4:33 PM
@PauloCereda @yo': German "Spiegel Online" just 'Breaking News' Those two guys who attacked 'Charlie Hebdo' are dead

I don't have BBC. :( I'll have to stick with CNN. Ugh.

@PauloCereda: there are enough other cool dudes around here, not only me...Only @DavidCarlisle and @egreg do not have any sense of humour :-P

@ChristianHupfer Please, write your name there.

yo'
@ChristianHupfer sigh. I'm more happy that the kosher shop has been successfully attacked and there are no fatalities

@ChristianHupfer just go for it already! Paulo will not give up! :-)

yo'
4:38 PM
@ChristianHupfer Who are you to judge that? It's the community who will judge you :) You should write yourself down ;)

The same to @Johannes. :) Do you have a TUG membership? :)

Hello to all, btw! Long time no chat.

@PaulGessler Exactly. :) There's some sort of German efficiency in this tactics. :)
@PaulGessler Hello Paul! :)

yo'
@PaulGessler hi :)

Yay, people talking!

4:38 PM
@yo': Unfortunately I've just read that two hostages are presumed to be dead there at the kosher shop

yo'
@ChristianHupfer damn!

@PauloCereda: As far as I know, Johannes has a TUG membership

@ChristianHupfer So it's you! Write your name there, please. :)
Pretty please, with sugar on top. :)
@ChristianHupfer: I'm refreshing the meta question like a madman waiting to spot your answer. :)

Who else does not have a TUG membership? Hands up!!! .... I see no hands ... so everybody in here does not have a membership... other guys/ladies in here are worthy as well @PauloCereda ;-)

yo'
@ChristianHupfer I've got mine, not renewed yet, but this is planned, too :)

4:47 PM
@ChristianHupfer I've my own as well; just renewed. :-)

What about Clemens?

yo'
@ChristianHupfer you mean cgnieder?

@Christian: give it a try. :) I got one in the past, and it's great, I can tell you. And it's also a nice opportunity for every and each member of this wonderful community to try a membership as a token of appreciation. Don't feel less worthy, you do a great job in here, as everybody else. Today I'm nominating you because I think you are a nice name to be part of the list, and surely I'd like to see you as a TUG member. Besides, this year's TUG will be in Germany, so please reconsider. :)

@PauloCereda: Thanks, Paulo, give me some time to think about it... and I know of TUG in Darmstadt, but I can't attend at that time :-(

@ChristianHupfer <3

yo'
4:51 PM
@ChristianHupfer :( Neither can I :(

@yo': thanks for the entry, Tom. :) You were my next target, but you saved me time. :)

@yo': Shall I add 'By the way: I am the greatest Downvoter here on TeX.SX' to you application? :-P

yo'
@PauloCereda in return, you should remake this one in the correct shape and edit it in, so that we can undelete the answer :)

@yo' Sure thing, pal! :)

yo'
@ChristianHupfer I'm really far from being a leader in this statistic.

4:58 PM
@PauloCereda: The TUG meeting in Darmstadt is from 19th to 21th of July?

@ChristianHupfer Think so. :)

@PauloCereda: I've just checked: 20th to 22nd... this is so .... damn... I just thinking how I could get some days off then
@PauloCereda: Will you attend?

@ChristianHupfer I'll try very hard to. :)

@PauloCereda: I hope, @Johannes_B will be there too... and I can exorzise him of his liver obsession ;-)

yo'
Hey! I could actually attend! And it's only 500 km from Prague

5:05 PM
@yo' Just about 220 km from my place here, 3 hours on Autobahn...

yo'
@ChristianHupfer :)
@PauloCereda You could come to Prague just before and I'd take a car :) It'll be tough, however, because I'll return from my summer camp on the 18th :-/

@yo' :)

yo'
btw, I may have a topic for a talk there: Making a university thesis template

@yo': ^^ :)

yo'
@PauloCereda /hitting F5 violently in order to be the first one to upvote

5:15 PM
@yo' I wub you.

yo'
@PauloCereda btw, I'm afraid that whatever you sent me by mail, it got lost on its way :(((((((

@yo' Don't lose hope, it will arrive someday. :)

yo'
@PauloCereda we'll see :)
YAY! @Christian :)

@yo' YAY!
@ChristianHupfer: Thank you so so so much! :) Dankeschon, vielen dank!
@PaulGessler: we won, Paul! ^^

@PauloCereda: I've done it, but I don't expect to be voted up ;-)

5:19 PM
@Joseph: could you please undelete my ad? meta.tex.stackexchange.com/questions/5876/… :)
@ChristianHupfer Don't say such thing to a member of the voting squad. :)

@PauloCereda: You forced me to the Dark Side

@ChristianHupfer iff you use vim. :)

@PauloCereda: No, the nomination ... vim?... never heard of it
@PauloCereda: I can not upvote the Arara logo :-(

yo'
@ChristianHupfer you have to vote to undelete first :)

@PauloCereda yay!

5:33 PM
@PaulGessler Yay!

@yo': How???? I see no undelete button

@ChristianHupfer I think you need at least 20k rep for this, not totally sure

@PauloCereda Sorry about your name, PaulO! For some reason, the "o" went missing, and I didn't notice it.
@ChristianHupfer I just edited your answer to meta.tex.stackexchange.com/questions/5905/…;. for the better :) I hope it's OK.

yo'
@ChristianHupfer ah yeah, I forgot that this is a 20k tool :(
But @Jubobs could undelete this: meta.tex.stackexchange.com/a/5893/11002 :)

@Jubobs No worries, my friend. :) Did you see the edit message? :)

5:42 PM
@PauloCereda Yes :) Seems I'm not the only one with spelling problems...

@Jubobs <3

yo'
@Paulo I managed! :)

@yo' <3

yo'
@JosephWright got a honourable mention from Pops :)
Well analyzed and stated! — Pops ♦ 23 hours ago

@Jubobs: No worries, that's fine! Thanks

3 hours later…
9:20 PM
All quiet on the .... in here ;-)
@PaulGessler: Yes, I know now too ;-) Damned priviledges .... :D

cfr
@JosephWright @percusse To be honest, I'm not sure what I mean. Just that it seems a lot more work: if I store a value in \l_cfr_something_tl, then I can't use it the way I could use, say #1. So should I be putting the value in something else instead?
@PauloCereda Did you send me anything by email in the end? If so, I didn't get it...
@ChristianHupfer Ha! I see you were persuaded to nominate yourself after all... ;)

@cfr: Yes, those voices in my head forced me to do so... ;-)
@cfr: The voice called @PauloCereda :-D
@cfr: And now since even me was convinced, so what about you? ;-)

@PauloCereda I am going to renew my joined membership in a few days.

@cfr That's the job of variants. If you have \cs_new:Nn \cfr_foo:n { --#1-- }, after \cs_generate_variant:Nn \cfr_foo:n { V }, you can say \cfr_foo:V \l_cfr_something_tl

9:36 PM
monopoly is a stupid game :(

@DavidCarlisle: Have you lost the game? ;-)

@DavidCarlisle Tell M to play his trombone, instead.

@ChristianHupfer everybody else is still playing but I was bankrupted by my son
3

@DavidCarlisle: :D :D

I whish you guys would have seen my face: »Package etoolbox error: Not running under E-Tex.« latex-community.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=86917#p86917

9:42 PM
@DavidCarlisle: I've played it recently on the Nintendo WII ... awful... I prefer the old board game

@ChristianHupfer yep we are playing with real dice on a real board (or at least I was:(

@DavidCarlisle: In Germany they are selling localized Monopoly boards, basically for each village there is a version with the local street names, places ;-)
@Johannes_B: etoolbox not running under e-tex... aha :D

in Discussion of PLOS paper on LaTeX productivity, 7 hours ago, by Joseph Wright
http://www.nature.com/news/word-processing-war-flares-up-on-social-media-1.16669
@ChristianHupfer How long has etex been standard? <- @egreg @DavidCarlisle

@Johannes_B: About 15 years?
@Johannes_B: But etoolbox is not possible without E-TeX, I suppose?

cfr
@ChristianHupfer I don't think somebody who has only been here a year should do so ;). (You have been here longer than me, so your doing so, even rightly, doesn't prove I should.)

9:54 PM
@ChristianHupfer Only a small part of it works.

cfr
@egreg It just seems... inscrutable. Like they've written the documentation in an obscure runic script ;).

@cfr: Your lack of confidence is disappointing ... heavy breathing ;-)

cfr
I just can't relate anything to anything I know...
@ChristianHupfer I'm sure you'll do fine and did not mean to suggest otherwise.

@egreg: So in summary it's almost impossible to use etoolbox without E-TeX features....
@cfr: I will calm down... perhaps @PauloCereda has more powers to lure you to the Dark side...

@Johannes_B Since 2003

10:00 PM
@Johannes_B: Isn't that the Banana^2 guy again?

@ChristianHupfer No. His english is far too good

@egreg,@DavidCarlisle: This is one for you

Q: What is the reason behind why > and < don't display properly without T1 font encoding?

anaI've read a number of posts that ask about why the symbols > and < show up incorrectly as ยก and ยฟ. The solution is to use the T1 font encoding. Okay. I'd like to learn about why these symbols show up the way they do with the original OT1 font encoding. It seems the technical reason is that the A...

@Johannes_B: Alright, I confused him with some other guy

@ChristianHupfer Only looking at the doc of mathtools, how would you try to adjust shortvdotsadjustabove?\

@Johannes_B: Is that a macro?
@Johannes_B: I just looked after it... sorry, never used it... I rarely use those environments

@ChristianHupfer Look at the doc ;-) Just by looking at it, i ddn't know. So this is a short test. But I am tired.

10:07 PM
@ChristianHupfer Done although probably egreg will post an answer 10 times longer in a bit

@DavidCarlisle: Be careful he does not steal text from your answer ... I have some anticipation he will do @egreg ;-)
@Johannes_B: What do you mean by adjust??? The distance to the next line? The distance between the dots?

@ChristianHupfer I turned up on GoLaTeX tonight (golatex.de/abstand-shortvdotswithin-t14465.html). You can do aligned vertical dots (and apparently adjust them).

@DavidCarlisle :)

@ChristianHupfer we were playing a London 2012 Olympic edition with all the Olympic venues and stadia rather than Hotels:-)

@Johannes_B Anything you would like to see improved or changed at that forum?

10:19 PM
@StefanKottwitz File uploads? :-)

@Johannes_B Good point! Further things on top of the list?

@StefanKottwitz btw: Writelatex has a new name. I (don't know about others) get a warning every time i click on »open in writelatex«.
@StefanKottwitz Saving the contents. To be honest, if the project would be stopped making the information available at a nother site .... ok with me.

@Johannes_B I know I blogged it :-) writeLaTeX is now Overleaf

@StefanKottwitz Oh, the blog looks different :-)

@Johannes_B Yes, I moved it, and wrote some posts, so perhaps somebody upvotes it on meta :-)

10:24 PM
@DavidCarlisle: Obviously you visited the stadia of your son too often otherwise the bankrupcy couldn't be explained ;-)

@Johannes_B I'm for keeping, looking what people like and feel once there are some improvements, time will show, but in any case it can get some care

@StefanKottwitz Maybe a popup before beeing able to write a question bibliographies: »Did you read the important notes?«
Did you really do it?

freely talking may just be comfortable for somebody compared to a Q&A structure, but perhaps we can connect all, with migration paths

Are you lying to me?

A 'funny' post on Meta.TeX.SX:

10:28 PM
@StefanKottwitz The helpers are linking and refering to texwelt quite frequently.

@Johannes_B Perhaps a support forum for thesis writing people who need personal care, a Q&A site for the good questions,
if a forum question is good or canonical, migrate it to Q&A, if it's excellent with the answers, migrate to the wiki,
and the other way round, migrate vague talks to the forum perhaps and the result possibly back
well, definetely a chat feature would be good

@StefanKottwitz Chat feature, excellent point.
@StefanKottwitz We saw on christmas by the TUBAF guy, that some things cannot be dealt with by a user of low experience.
@StefanKottwitz We see that here every day as well. A clear question means a little bit of knowledge. Without having any clue, the question will be unclear.

@Johannes_B Do you know a good webchat? I did not find something better than OpenFire which may require a client software
Do you plan to go to Darmstadt or Stralsund?

10:51 PM
@StefanKottwitz Sorry, no experience about web chatting.
@StefanKottwitz Concerning Darmstadt/Stralsund. I heard the conf. fees are quite high in DA. The weekend of the DANTE Tagung is booked because our library has the Lange Nacht der aufgeschobenen Hausarbeiten and the LaTeX guys should/will be there.
Heading home now, it is late. See you guys, enjoy the weekend

@Johannes_B: Till next time... Gute Nacht

@Johannes_B Good night!

11:07 PM
@Johannes_B As a student the fee will be significantly lower.

@StefanKottwitz: What is the fee for a non-student?

@ChristianHupfer tug.org/tug2014/register.html 2014 $400 non-member, $375 for a member
I think this is hard, it makes me understand why a big part of attendees come fom institutions
who would do this on her or his own, in addition to travel and hotel costs
luckily I'm still a student :-) so it could be 100$ as in 2014, but I don't know

@StefanKottwitz: $375 even for a member? That's currently about 300 euros... It's a joke ;-)
@StefanKottwitz: Travel costs are no issue for Darmstadt, since it's 'only' 230 km away from my place, so rather near

@ChristianHupfer Yes, I went to the website to look for it and I was so staggered
@ChristianHupfer Before reading that, I planned to get a combined membership
with the open possibility to go to Darmstadt
I thought it would not be so much for members

@StefanKottwitz: I am no student any longer (for about ten years now...), but even as a nowadays teacher I am very reluctant to pay more than 300 euros for a three-days-conference... but at the moment I am not a TUG member at all

11:17 PM
@ChristianHupfer The distance to Hamburg is far more, but I could fly cheaply to Frankfurt

@StefanKottwitz: is there any reason for this pricing strategy?

@ChristianHupfer Flying or conference? ;-)

@StefanKottwitz: Yes, I know, you are employee of an airline... ;-)

Flying: I'm working for Lufthansa. Conference fee: I don't know

@StefanKottwitz: I meant the conference fee

11:19 PM
just a club of very serious people? :-)

@StefanKottwitz: TeX.SX? Yes ;-) TUG meeting... hm... unclear ;-)

@ChristianHupfer When did you start to study?

@StefanKottwitz: Almost twenty years ago, in 1996... and dropped out of university after completing my PhD in 2005... at that time my status as a student ended
@StefanKottwitz: I am getting old :D

I started 1992 but I'm still elibible for the student discount :-)

@ChristianHupfer I guess I'll go by motorbike: just 800km; a stage in Augsburg will do.

11:24 PM
@StefanKottwitz: Lucky fellow :D

yo'
@ChristianHupfer ROFL :D
btw, what does it take to suggest a talk for the TUG meeting? And when are the deadlines supposed to be?

@egreg: Well, if I will attend, I'll take my car... 3 hours on the autobahn it's not so much, the A5 motorway to Darmstadt/Frankfurt is not far away from here
@yo': What's so funny? ;-)

@yo' No details yet, but tug.org/tug2014 shows the information about last year

yo'
@ChristianHupfer This: "TUG meeting full of serious people -- unclear"

@ChristianHupfer No motorway, of course. ;-)

11:34 PM
@yo' One mostly speaks completely in lowercase

@egreg: Getting of the Alps is certainly a bit of fun with a motorcycle... but driving through the Rhine valley is no fun either... you want to get away from it very quickly ;-)

yo'
@StefanKottwitz qu'est-ce?

@ChristianHupfer No Rhein: Augsburg, Bad Mergentheim, Michelstadt.
@ChristianHupfer Or Ansbach and Aschaffenburg

@egreg: Yes, but I have to use the Rhine valley line ;-)

@ChristianHupfer And the Alps have Innsbruck and Garmisch-Partenkirchen :)

yo'
11:45 PM
@ChristianHupfer last time I went there, it was lovely. We went from Mainz downstream, AFAIK until some place where there's a restaurant up from the valley with a sight on some water creature lady

@egreg: Yes, both nice towns

@yo' You're slow in adapting macros. ;-)

yo'
@egreg yes.

Q: Respecting poster's style

egregWhen editing a question or answer, one usually fixes also occasional slips in capitalization, for example "Latex" into "LaTeX" or "Tikz" into "TikZ"; frequently one sees "i" for "I". If I interpret correctly the site's tradition, a message should not be edited just to fix misprints or minor glit...

@yo': Lorelei ;-)

11:46 PM
@yo' Which means accepting posting all in lowercase or ALL IN UPPERCASE depending on the person

@yo': I did not mean that part of the Rhine valley... it's the boring part between Basel and Mannheim ;-)

yo'
@ChristianHupfer yep!
@StefanKottwitz ah this :)
@ChristianHupfer ah ok
but Basel itself is beatiful :)

@yo'... that's true...and only 100 km for here ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Where Freiburg is?

yo'
@egreg IWGTFY :D

11:53 PM
@egreg: I am about 30 km north of Freiburg... Basel approx. 70 km south of it
