@SeanAllred I once proposed a Lisp solution using recursion to a friend, and he gave me that stare people do at crazy people saying they are Jesus. :)

12:36 AM
@PauloCereda But recursion is the only thing that makes sense in Lisp :)
Anything else is an awful hack. It doesn't make sense and it will run slowly.
My rule for Lisp: if it can't be solved using recursion, you're solving the wrong problem.

4 hours later…
4:43 AM
@SeanAllred Luckily everything can be solved by recursion ;-)

5:14 AM
@StephanLehmke Indeed!

5:31 AM
what's a @-free version of \@alph ?

5:55 AM
It's almost 3AM, I guess I should be sleeping by now.

6:42 AM
@leo Sorry, I was off line; yes, $\sqrt[k]{r}$ is irrational unless both the numerator and the denominator (when the fraction is in reduced form) are $k$-th powers.

7:33 AM
@leo Package babel got restructured. Look for something like babel-spanish in the package manager

@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez \alph? It wants a counter's name as argument.

8:02 AM
@egreg but I don't have a counter: just a number
is 2014's updmap supposed to be picking TEXMFLOCAL/web2c/updmap.cfg ?
mssing up with fonts is something that I forget übercompletely every single time five minutes after doing it...

9:10 AM
@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez Then you need \@alph; if you want to use it in a document, add \makeatletter\let\dalph\@alph\makeatother to your preamble and do \dalph{3} in your document.
@JosephWright The change of l3 allowing spaces in file names works for the application to |kpsewhich... Thanks!

@egreg Of course :-)

@JosephWright It doesn't work with xelatex, though; but I believe it's a problem with the pipe in XeTeX.

@egreg Hmm, odd: a low-level test works. Will investigate

9:28 AM
@JosephWright Try the code by Heiko in tex.stackexchange.com/a/179748/4427 With xelatex I get no PDF output unless I add -no-pdf and do the conversion manually.
@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez Yes, it is supposed to. But it's already in TL2013

10:03 AM
@egreg Odd: if you \show the macro the content is fine
@egreg Something to do with the loop/eof test: try without that

@JosephWright And, quite strangely, the more complex L3 code I have gives different results when xelatex is used instead of pdflatex or lualatex: with xelatex the sequence I'm trying to populate results empty, while with pdflatex and lualatex it's populated as expected.

@egreg Indeed: if you \tracingoutput=1 here the shipouts are the same for XeLaTeX and pdfLaTeX
with Heiko's demo

@percusse Sorted :-)

@JosephWright Thank you! I am trying out Linux so that is indeed a very good reference.

@percusse I didn't actually do anything, just noting that the upvotes will result in badges :-)

@JosephWright on behalf of the upvoters then hehe

@percusse I upvoted it. :)

10:42 AM
@PauloCereda Why am I not surprised? :)

@percusse You shouldn't, you are the captain of the Voting Squad. :)

@PauloCereda Says the highest voter of the whole SE network

@percusse :-) Was just checking that

39999 votes
I am one vote away, let me fix it!

@JosephWright There must be some exception implemented for him. 40 votes are too few he should at least get 400. That would keep him busy for another 10 minutes.

10:46 AM
@percusse LOL

@percusse If you look in general, we do very well for voting (I'm I guess top 20-ish network-wide, for example, and SO had a bit time advantage)

@PauloCereda Holy..... that means you caused 400K rep points. Almost the top row of the highest rep :)
@JosephWright How do you look at it network wide ? Data query?

Hey, the counter is stuck in 39999!

@PauloCereda Please don't tell me you broke SE

@percusse I guess I did!
Can't believe those developers used small integers for vote counting.
Guys it's true! The counter is frozen! LOL

10:53 AM
hahaha
go to MSO then
show dem votes

@percusse: oh it's updated now.
Bah, it would be funnier if I really had crashed it. :)

@PauloCereda Could you sleep after the big delusion? ;-)

@egreg The game? :) I blame Fred.

@PauloCereda And Ochoa, of course.

@egreg Indeed!

10:58 AM
@PauloCereda What's up with the player's names anyway?

@StephanLehmke What happened? :)

Here's another to upvote (title is note really doing the thing justice):

A: Poisson disc sampling implemented in luatex

JLDiazAs promised, here is my implementation. It is composed of two files: poisson.lua contains the implementation in lua of the algorithm described here. The "main" function is generate_poisson() which returns a Lua array of points, being each point a pair (x,y). In addition, the function poisson_po...

@PauloCereda Fred, Jo, Oscar, Willian - are these real names or do they want to stay anonymous :-)

@StephanLehmke Surprisingly, those are really their names (except Jô, his name is João). It's very common to refer to players in here by their first names, not their last names. :)

@PauloCereda Or by a nickname, like Pelé or Zico

@egreg Ah yes, indeed. :)

11:12 AM
@PauloCereda But Falcão was known by his last name

@egreg A couple of them. :) You know the real name of Júnior? :)

@PauloCereda Leovigildo, IIRC

@egreg Wow! That's correct!

@PauloCereda Oh, I see it should be Leovegildo.
@PauloCereda Great player, even if he played for Torino.

@egreg Cool. :)
@egreg: of course my favourite player is Ademir da Guia. :)

11:31 AM
@PauloCereda It's unfair: there are two Zicos on the pitch. ;-)

@egreg LOL

@PauloCereda A bit overweight, at least.
@PauloCereda Let's say that Estrelas' defense wasn't really tough.

@egreg :)

1 hour later…
1:04 PM
@percusse, @JosephWright, @PauloCereda: thanks!
My second gold badge for that answer :D

@Silex Hey! I did upvote, too! And when it was below 100. ;-) After all, you're citing my paper on TUGboat. :)

@egreg and all other upvoters: thanks a lot ;)

@JosephWright Here's a test for the nonworking pipe in xelatex:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{xparse}

\ExplSyntaxOn
\ior_new:N \g_pipe_test_stream

\ior_open:Nn \g_pipe_test_stream { |kpsewhich ~ -all ~ texmf.cnf }
\ior_str_map_inline:Nn \g_pipe_test_stream
 { \tl_show:n { #1 } }

\stop
With pdflatex and lualatex I get
> /usr/local/texlive/2014/texmf.cnf.
<recently read> }

l.9  { \tl_show:n { #1 } }

?
> /usr/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/web2c/texmf.cnf.

l.9  { \tl_show:n { #1 } }

?
With xelatex nothing at all

@egreg I'll need to test on my Mac: here at work on Win7 all is well

@JosephWright I tried on a GNU/Linux box and it works. Tried on another Mac OS X box, failed.

@egreg OK, so a Mac-specific issue?

@JosephWright It seems so.

@egreg 'Not my fault' then ;-)

3:09 PM
@egreg gets an honourable mention in my latest answer

@DavidCarlisle Just seen. ;-)

@egreg Yup, that's what I am doing :-) I find it slightlyweird that there is no user command for that.

@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez question is, how come you have a number that you want to print as a letter? the model was I think that either it's dynamically calculated so in a counter, or if it's a literal 2 you don't really need \@alph you can just use b (I know the model of latex doesn't always match user behaviour but still:-)

I have a \thmitem command which gets a number and formats it in the form (a), which I use in my text to refer to parts of theorems (which I have numbered in that way) I know I should be defining all these commands in a style file, so I am not complaining much! (setting labels and using \ref's would probably beat all other options, but that usually takes more typing for things that get often used exactly one time)

@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez well that unquestionably should be a counter accessed with \ref that prints \theyourcounter using \@alph, so not a use case for making \@alph a user callable command:-)

3:33 PM
Ack?

@PauloCereda David has removed a % at the end of a line. A coup de maître. :)

@egreg I'd still have a % :-) (with a space, of course)

leo
@Johannes_B yes, I had to install that, thanks

3:51 PM
@JosephWright harder to squeeze in a reference to @egreg if you use that form. Personally I'd use \@ne

leo
@egreg no problem :-) I thought it would help here, but it seems it won't

@DavidCarlisle Fair enough

@egreg :)

@leo About your question: any nonzero positive rational number $q$ can be expressed in a unique way as $q=\prod_{p\in P}p^{a(p)}$ where $a(p)$ is an integer (positive, negative or zero) and $a(p)=0$ for all but a finite number of primes $p\in P$ ($P$ is the set of natural primes). Now prove that $q$ is the $k$-th power of a rational number if and only if $k$ divides $a(p)$ for all $p\in P$.

leo
@egreg thank you

4:04 PM
@leo It's basically the same as for integers.

leo
@egreg yes
rationals have a prime decomposition just like integers by allowing integer exponents
and btw it allow us to prove that $(\mathbb{Q}^\ast,\cdot)$ and $(\mathbb{Z}, +)$ are isomorphic groups

@leo Not really: the multiplicative group of positive rationals is a free abelian group of countable rank.

leo
@egreg let me see
yes, I no longer can edit
@egreg I mean positive rationals and polynomials with integer coefficients. Indeed otherwise is not true

@leo OK

Hi
I'm always struggling with tikz and matrix. But this time it should be an easy one. Let's assume I have some nodes defined and that I want to connect them with arrows. I'd need \draw[->] (m-x-y) -- (m-v-w); A large number of times. Would it be possible to use only one `\draw[->] and then multiple nodes?

leo
4:22 PM
@s__C hi
@s__C what about \draw (m-x-y) [->] -- (m-v-w) [->] -- (m-v-w);?

@egreg in honour of your reference wipet stole the tick in that % question:-)

@DavidCarlisle What an injustice. You should have added the reference to the TeXbook.

4:40 PM
@leo Doesn't work, when using \draw like that you get a single path, with a single arrow.
@s__C You can use a for loop, or perhaps edge, e.g.
\draw [->]
   (m-1-1) edge (m-2-3)
   (m-1-1) edge (m-1-2);

let me try
edge is fine if it is a continuous chain
well it's a first step

@s__C No it doesn't. If I understand you correctly.

yeah you're right. but you have to repeat the coordinate if you don't want the arrow to cross the node.

leo
@TorbjørnT. I see

Gol de Chile!

@egreg And a pretty one.

@AlanMunn Chile has two players of Juventus.

7:43 PM
Gol de Chile! Poor Spain. :)

@egreg Another one?!
@egreg And one player of Palmeiras. :)

@egreg I have no sympathy. :)
Commentator: "Spain looking like a sad parody of their former selves."

@egreg This is a group of death if there ever was one.

@StephanLehmke Spain wasn't expected to be so weak.
@AlanMunn We'd say “vecchie glorie”. :)

@egreg It certainly seems that way.

7:54 PM
@egreg My thoughts exactly. And also king Juan's fault. :P
"Oh in Spain we have the best league in the world." But this league is not made with Spanish players.

@PauloCereda That's the same for all European leagues.

@egreg How's the limit for foreign players in a team?
I think Brazil limits to 5 foreign players.

@PauloCereda There's no limit for EU players; I guess in Italy not more than 3 non EU players, but many have become EU citizens.

@egreg Oh my.

@PauloCereda For instance, Inter has exactly three Italian players: one is the second goalkeeper and one played in 11 games in the last championship.

8:04 PM
@egreg Ouch!

@egreg oh I wasn't watching, money for me?

@egreg: Palmeiras has 4: Valdívia (Chile), Eguren (Uruguay), Victorino (Uruguay) and Mendieta (Paraguay).
@DavidCarlisle Dude, you are so gonna get that money jar. :)

@PauloCereda now let me see, what was that tip I got from a local expert on South American football, ah yes..
Jun 7 at 10:39, by Paulo Cereda
@DavidCarlisle I can understand about Uruguay, but Chile?!

@DavidCarlisle Oh no! :)

@PauloCereda Slovenia: 1; Brazil: 4; Argentina: 9; Serbia: 1; Colombia: 1; Congo (Dem. Rep.): 1; Croatia: 1; Algeria: 1; Portugal: 1; Japan: 1; Kenya: 1. The Italians are actually 4, the one I forgot played in 4 games.

8:42 PM
Seems like texlive 2014 is out (and so is MacTex 2014). Any reason why I shouldn't upgrade right now?

@Argo Have been using it for some time: all fine here

@PauloCereda Now also Valdivia is in. :)

@egreg Yay! :)

Hi!

@tohecz How are the beaches?

8:49 PM
@JosephWright awesome, I'll download it straight away.

@egreg easy points for you to pick up:
\smash{what I wrote before} would hide the raised text but the result is horrible:-) I'd be embarrassed to pick up points making an answer that you accepted:-) — David Carlisle 43 secs ago
@Argo we all updated weeks ago:-)

@PauloCereda You'll be sad for Diego Costa, won't you?
@DavidCarlisle I'm afraid the OP won't agree with my advice.

@DavidCarlisle well, given the changes are rather small I don't see any reason to rush it :) Although that LuaJITTex stuff seems rather interesting to be honest...

@egreg Of course I will. :P

9:19 PM
@DavidCarlisle Did you see the LaTeX-L message re. LuaTeX from Élie Roux?
Perhaps @HeikoOberdiek might also have some comment

Hello folks, I just want to say "hi", I began latex'ing around 2 months ago and I must admit that this community is so great, well-organized and effective! Thanks for your support so far!! :-)

@Jens Hello

@Jens Hi and keep on TeXing.

@Jens Welcome! Remember that here we rarely talk about TeX: we're all fond of cricket. ;-)

hehe ok :D I surely will keep on TeXing, because I began hating Word :) too bad that my co-workers would not even mind to start TeXing, so I cannot change 100%
@egreg I am into martial arts but I also like other sports ;)

9:28 PM
@Jens Hey! That's dangerous! Almost like cricket.

@egreg I am sure that cricket is more dangerous :-D

@egreg And ducks! ;-)

@Johannes_B Well, that's obvious!

In Germany, cricket is not that famous
But I think it's interesting :)

@Jens If your interested to get soome german answers you should check out texwelt.de/wissen

9:34 PM
Thanks for the link

@Jens I don't. ;-) It's just an inner joke for teasing @DavidCarlisle

Oh, that's evil :P

@Jens If you consider that tomorrow England will play Uruguay, you'll realize that there are even more evil things.

9:50 PM
haha

@Jens Just out of curiosity: In which part of germany do you live?

Aachen, NRW
And you?

@Jens Feriberg, Saxony.

What's your profession, I am interested in your backgrounds

@Jens btw: you can »ping« the people using The @-sign in front of their names.

@Johan

@Jens Psychology and LaTeX usually are not that famous

@Johannes_B

@Johannes_B Be assiduous. ;-)

9:57 PM
@Johannes_B Nope, unfortunately not, but I am sick of doing this illogical formatting in word over and over again

@egreg Who has the time?

Next topic is learning R, since we only use SPSS :P

@Johannes_B I've an average of just six answer per day, it's not that much.

@Jens There is one german LaTeX user i know working in/studiyng psychology. You would fit well :-)
@egreg Not that much :-)

@Johannes_B With just 40 points per answer.

10:00 PM
I recently overviewed my bachelor thesis and stared at some ugly gaps between the words :P

@egreg Just one accepted answer and my profile would look nice

@Johannes_B Sorry, I can't help with that. :)

@egreg no, two edits and an upvote
Really nice
@egreg Oh, just two edits remaining :-)

@Johannes_B what are you hunting for?

It just comes down to me now.

10:08 PM
@Johannes_B The first step is becoming Legendary, after that it's easy. ;-)

@egreg :-D

Signing off for today. Good night folks.

@Johannes_B Good night!

@egreg i might be in that list one day.

10:10 PM
Is my profile photo updated? :)

But i guess not
@PauloCereda Jep, nice :-)

I see a duck
Duckfaces are out
:P

@Johannes_B Yay! :)
@Jens It's a cricketeer duck, you better watch out. :)

ouuuuh :D

@PauloCereda I expect to see one time at a TUG meeting wearing the Ducky Tie

10:13 PM
@Johannes_B Oh my, I want one!
Wait, that means I need to wear a suit? No way. :)

Damn, edited the post

@PauloCereda I always wear a suit with a tie. :P
Well, I also never lie.

on your wrist?

@egreg :)
@Johannes_B LOL
Duck belt.

Oh no, again
@PauloCereda You can wear it at your wrist, or even as a belt.

10:17 PM
@Johannes_B :)
@esdd: Hallo! :)

@esdd Hey Elke

@Johannes_B Elke Schubert?

@Paulo, @Johannes_B Hallo :-)

@PauloCereda Si

@Johannes_B Oh my! I heard about you him her in mdframed!
Beware of Marco, he drives at lightspeed. :)

10:19 PM
@PauloCereda Not me, @esdd

@Johannes_B Apologies. :)

@PauloCereda s/him/her/

@Johannes_B I'm stoopid. :)

@PauloCereda :-D

@esdd: sorry for the confusion. :)
There are two kinds of Germans: the ones who were run over by Marco's Mercedes Benz, and the ones who are about to be run over by Marco's Mercedes Benz. :)

10:22 PM
Need to really sign off for today. Good night to everyone.

@Johannes_B Good night!

@Johannes_B Good night

@Marcodaniel Drive carefully

Just got a posting to the hacker news frontpage, I should adjust server resources now :-o

@PauloCereda no problem :-)

10:27 PM
@esdd Danke. :)
Hey @Stefan, long time no see!

@PauloCereda Hi Paulo! Yes, a bit more busy wit the new job, sometimes

What are you working in?

@Jens Network engineering, working for an airline now, though mostly cruise ship projects

Hello

sounds interesting but challenging

10:32 PM
@barznjy Hello!

How I can control the position of the pictures in latex, for example I have a 4 figures , I want all of them will be at the top of the page after the numerical analysis section.

I am getting an error in texlive 2014, which does not show in texlive 2013. This only shows up with tex4ht. I'll try to make a MWE. But the file is over 20,000 lines long. I think this is a bug. But I'll show the error, may be someone can give me a hint.

@Jens That's what makes a nice job :-) so I'm satisfied with it

?

@JosephWright yes and your measured reply,

10:34 PM
The file compiles OK with pdflatex on both texlive 2014 and 2013. It compiles ok with tex4ht on 2013, but gives the above error in 2014

@egreg Hi, I saw your answer about the embeded fonts yesterday, thank you

@Nasser compare the versions of the multicol package

@barznjy It was just a comment, IIRC

@Nasser Frank added some code to support bidi right to left languages) tex4ht might need to catch up

@Nasser is that related to my question?

10:37 PM
@Nasser at least I saw \page@sofar with that "undefined" command here:
1
Q: How to add vertical lines (rules) to the left of first column and right of last column using multicol package

NasserWhen using the package multicol for say 2 columns, the output is ....|.... using the code below. I'd like a way to add a rule to the left of the first column and to the right of the last column, so that the output looks like |....|....| These 2 extra rules can be in the margin if needed instead...

@barznjy What answer are you referring to?

@Jens perhaps not in Germany but the Italian and Brazilian members of this chatroom think of nothing else.

multicol package support was added as patch in 2013. Strange thing this MWE compiles ok with tex4ht in 2014. so I think multicols is ok?
\documentclass[12pt]{book}%
\input{commonlatex}

A: How to influence the position of float environments like figure and table in LaTeX?

Frank MittelbachTo answer this question one has to first understand the basic rules that govern LaTeX's standard placement of floats. Once these are understood, adjustments can be made, for example, by modifying float parameters, or by adding certain packages that modify or extend the basic functionality. LaTe...

10:39 PM
@barznjy what question was that? no, I just logged in.

@Nasser but given you got an error about \maybe@reverse@columns I assume watever patch was made in 2013 is wrong in 2014 now multicol is updated to support placing the columns in right to left order
@PauloCereda you look... different

@DavidCarlisle Cricket theme. :)

@DavidCarlisle I do not know what is going on. But in 2013, I used a patch from tex4ht team. And that works. Now it does not work in this large file. but it works in small MWE. I think there is interaction with another package in 2014 which was not there before. I'll check version of multicols now. The file is so big, that is the problem. about 400 pages.

@Nasser, just ignore it. Thank you

@Nasser make a MWE that has a page or at least a column break in it the command you show is in the output routine (page composition)

10:49 PM
@DavidCarlisle sure. will do that. thanks
@DavidCarlisle is this the file I need to compare between 2013 and 2014?
>pwd
/usr/local/texlive/2013/texmf-dist/tex/latex/tools
>ls -l multicol.sty
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 26766 Aug 3 2011 multicol.sty
>

@Nasser yes
@Nasser well first off drop in the old one and see if the problem goes away that will confirm it is the multicol change, then you just need to fix your patch (or push it back to the tex4ht maintainers)

@DavidCarlisle what old one? I am running on new system, 2014. Did not make any changes to texlive 2014 at all. I am not using the patch at all in 2014. But only in 2013 I am. Which is on separate PC all together.

@Nasser No I meant get a copy of the old (2013) multicol and drop it in the folder with tyour document and try it with texlive2014 if you get no error it confirms that it is the 2014 update of multicol that is the problem but given your comment about not using a patch in 2014 I perjhaps misunderstood you

@DavidCarlisle sure. Will try that. Will copy the 2013 mutlicol to my 2014 PC and try that there now. I just did a diff, and there are do many changes in multicol 2013 and 2014. Ok, will now try what you just suggested.
I just need to copy multicol 2013 to same folder as the tex file, right? I do not need to copy it to /usr/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/latex/tools ? if it is in local folder as the tex file, it will be used instead?

@Nasser yes the document folder should be fine

@DavidCarlisle great news! now the error went away on the 2014 pc ! I copied the multicol from my 2013 pc to the 2014 pc, and build clean, and no longer see the error. What to do now? Should I put the 2013 multicol.sty in place of the 2014 official one?
Is this a bug then? Should I report it somewhere?
may be I need to make a MWE and post this to make it visible?

@Nasser No! don't replace it. either you found a bug in the new multicol in which case you could to make a MWE that only contains files from the core latex release and post to latex bugs, or some code you have is patching multicol assuming the old definitions and those assumptions are now wrong, in which case that code needs updating, or you can just leave multicol in your document folder and let someone else trip up later

@DavidCarlisle that is too complicated :) I'll try to reproduce in with MWE, and post it on main board, and let someone decide what to do with it and channel it to the right place.

Dear folks, I'm out for sleeping

@DavidCarlisle guess what I found! It is the pdflatex which is failing !! not tex4ht on 2014. I thought it was tex4ht. I do pdflatex index.tex and get the error. working on MWE. This is worst than I thought.
I have a MWE !
pdflatex fails when using mutlicol package !!

@egreg: could you suggest me a good combo of fonts/math fonts? :)
