@DavidCarlisle Reopened :)

12:37 AM
@HarishKumar thanks

@DavidCarlisle You got 10. :)

@HarishKumar :-)

Can anyone here help with a packaging question? It may even be as simple as a zip question.

@AlanMunn Simple?

So I have a package that will never be put on CTAN, but distributed to locally. I'd like to create a .zip file that when unzipped will put everything correctly into its place within the user's local texmf folder. How do I do that?

@AlanMunn winzip has a facility like that.

And by "correctly" I mean, the package and associated folders go in the tex/latex/mypackage folder, and the documentation goes in doc/tex/latex/mypackage folder.
@HarishKumar I think all zips do; I'm just not so clear on how it works. (I need a Linux/Mac explanation, though, not Windows, unfortunately.)

@AlanMunn I don't know on linux/mac. But in windows and winzip, I remember doing exactly that once upon a time. :)

1:49 AM
@AlanMunn Do you have winrar in linux? If so, it has an option to convert to SFX. See in the tools and then Advanced options. There is a path to extract.
But I am not sure :(

2:06 AM
@HarishKumar No. I'm pretty sure zip can do this, I just need to know how.

2:29 AM
@AlanMunn Just tested with winzip now. It offers self extracting exe and unzip and try options under Tools. I think here it is straight forward. But it extracts every thing in to one folder.

@HarishKumar Thanks Harish.

@PauloCereda What's "Theoretical Mathematics"?

@egreg I was thinking the same. :)

@PauloCereda The speaker is surely a CS guy.

@egreg Hey! :P
@egreg, @Werner: in other news:
@Werner, @egreg: you guys get back to TeX.sx! :)Paulo Cereda 5 mins ago

@PauloCereda Leave me the pleasure of downvoting in SO.

10:10 AM
@egreg ooh I never thought of that! :)

10:38 AM
Everyone having a fun morning?

@JosephWright I slept till 11 AM; guess this can be called a fun morning.

@egreg Lucky you: my boss rang me a ten about a book chapter he's volunteered us to write. I'm working on it now.

@JosephWright More correctly: “He's volunteered you to write”

@egreg Well I can touchtype so there is an element of truth to that: like a typing pool of old, he talks and I type

How to change the exsheets' problem/solution counter to start from 10 (for example)?

12:42 PM
@PGFTricks \c@question=\count146 tells you the answer:-)

1:28 PM
@JosephWright Back from the mass, had a tough night. :)

@JosephWright I'm still digesting the triples from last night. Westmalle Tripel for president :P

1:58 PM
@PauloCereda Tevez+LLorente. :)

@egreg :)

2:20 PM
@DavidCarlisle OK. Thanks.

@PauloCereda It is still voting, right? ;)

@Werner I only see upvotes, but I guess downvotes are still valid. :)

@PauloCereda My presence on SO for LaTeX-related questions is to flag for migration.

@Werner :)

That, however, does take a long while, depending on whether you directly request moderator attention or not.
That's how I got the Marshal badge over there... indirectly TeX-related... :)
So many people still just dump there problems (!) on SO, and they should here. :)

3:08 PM
This question should be reopened, as it is about formatting in TeX already given triples rather than computing them.

Q: How to write a code to find the Pythagorean Triples?

minthao_2011I want to write a code to make a table contains Pythagorean Triples (see picture) automatically. That is mean from the formulas $a^2 + b^2 = c^2$ , we can get the Pythagorean Triples I used Mathematica, convert to TeX, I get the code of Mathematica is \left( \begin{array}{ccc} 3 & 4 & 5 \\...

@JosephWright know anyone who understands beamer handout option??:-) tex.stackexchange.com/questions/133713/…
@JosephWright hey beamer has a manual! \only<2|handout:2>{bbb}

@DavidCarlisle Surprising! Not that beamer has a manual, but that you went looking for it.

3:43 PM
@egreg Spooky. :)
Now wait for M to start using vim. :)
@DavidCarlisle: ^^ :)

@PauloCereda M would be banned access from all machines. But probably, in revenge, he'd plant Slackware in his Xbox and use vim as default shell.

@egreg Oh my! :)
He could borrow @Joseph's PS3 and install OpenBSD. :)

@PauloCereda Using vim as default shell on Slackware would be quite an experience.
@PauloCereda @JosephWright would never give it to him: how can he play^H^H^H^H work otherwise?

@egreg Indeed. :) Init 3. :)

@PauloCereda No Xorg except for running Xdvi.

3:56 PM
@egreg Yep. :)
@egreg: let's make things a little harder: legacy vi, not vim. :)

@egreg tracingall is a bit brutal with beamer:-)
@PauloCereda he'll have to buy his own machine first

@DavidCarlisle And it spoils your keynote at UK-TUG. :)
@DavidCarlisle You are mean. :)

@PauloCereda is there any difference? esc:q works same as far as I have been able to tell.

@DavidCarlisle No difference, just some other annoyances. :)

4:12 PM
@DavidCarlisle <esc>:q is the only Vi(m) operation worthy of being known.

@egreg obviously, since it is the only operation it has, as far as I know.

@DavidCarlisle Maybe the variant <esc>:q! is better. All I know about Vi(m) is that you have to hit the escape key a few times (how many depends on your mood), then type :q!<return> or reach the switch off button.

@egreg you should read the manual

@DavidCarlisle You have to launch Vi(m) for reading it.

$ man vim
No manual entry for vim

4:23 PM
@DavidCarlisle Of course you have to type man vi; all you get is a pretty uninformative text that tells you to look at vimtutor(1). Guess what happens.

:11337954 $ man vi
No manual entry for vi
@egreg I have an optimised vi(m) installation
Trying to edit the mathml spec to describe the parsing rules in HTML. Hard to do while using language suitable for a specification.

4:42 PM
:help!

@DavidCarlisle That would be because you don't have vim installed :-P Try unixhelp.ed.ac.uk/CGI/man-cgi?vim

5:32 PM
@NicolaTalbot I don't think that page would get through my firewall

@DavidCarlisle That's all right. The emacs one probably wouldn't get through mine :-P

karthikI am facing a very strange problem. Why can't I delete the limit.pdf in the following code?
\documentclass[preview]{standalone}
\usepackage{filecontents}

\begin{filecontents*}{limit.tex}
\documentclass[pstricks,border=12pt]{standalone}
\usepackage{multido}
\Large
\begin{document}
\multido{\r=3.0+-0.1}{30}{%
\begin{pspicture}(-1,0)(6,2)
	\psline{->}(-1,1)(5,1)
	\pscircle*[linecolor=red](0,1){2pt}
	\psframe*[linecolor=cyan,opacity=0.5](0,0)(\r,2)
	\uput[-135](0,1){$t$}
	\uput[0](5,1){time}
\end{pspicture}}
\end{document}
\end{filecontents*}

\usepackage{pgffor,animate}

\foreach \compiler/\ext in {latex/tex,dvips/dvi,ps2pdf/ps}

@PGFTricks The PDF is still "opened" by *TeX.

@Qrrbrbirlbel It is Windows mechanism to invoke del on cmd frameowork.
@Qrrbrbirlbel OK. Thank you!

@PGFTricks There was a question that dealt with making a copy from the PDF. Basically the same problem.

@Qrrbrbirlbel OK. No problem. Deleting is just an option.

8:36 PM
What is the correct way to represent the magnitude of a vector? |\vv{A}| or \left|\vv{A}\right|?

@PGFTricks There's no correct way, mathematically speaking. TeXnically speaking, if you want only one bar, use \lvert and \rvert.

@egreg OK. I will try it.
Thanks.

9:28 PM
I'm very unhappy about rude people:
-1 Dude, the star was just an example. I can't believe someone with 62K rep would post a stupid answer like this... did you really think I was trying to show a star on my actual document? — Mehrdad 22 mins ago

9:56 PM
@tohecz :( Let's turn to better things: Jake's about to enter the 100K club!

@egreg yay!

Rep cap, for today. So tomorrow it will be the day.

@egreg Ok we need the last two votes
:)

@percusse Jake is rep capped. Only an accept would move his rep.

@egreg Yes I've saturated it just a moment ago :P

10:03 PM
@percusse assuming he doesn't get another -ve score like yesterday

I won't be here at 0:00 UTC, so maybe @Werner can check and be the first 100K+ to congratulate.

@DavidCarlisle @PauloCereda taught me a few of his secrets

@percusse well someone didn't learn Jake's total for yesterday was -75, a bit cruel that close to 100k:)

@DavidCarlisle :-) Oscillating around 100K in the limbo ....

Then it's @JosephWright next...

10:07 PM
@DavidCarlisle When he'll finish xor

@egreg someone needs to
