7:00 PM
@JosephWright What is it generating then?

@StephanLehmke DVI
@StephanLehmke The licenses for dvips and ps2pdf are flexible, I think

@JosephWright Ok, so Beamer, PGF etc. would be quite useless or can you run ghostview on the iphone.

@DavidCarlisle: I'm taking your advice seriously and I'll try to come up with a DVI driver in Java that exports the content to XML.

@JosephWright Ah, Ok. Is this a GPL issue?

@StephanLehmke KerTeX has dvips and ps2pdf, I think
@StephanLehmke Licenses certainty feature in the KerTeX outlook
I'm pretty sure GPL stuff is no good for the iTunes store, anyway
Can't see ps2pdf, but certainly dvips is there

7:05 PM
@JosephWright A pity. Other GPL projects are willing to relicense appropriately to make such applications possible.

@StephanLehmke I've no idea whether the KerTeX guy has asked anyone
@StephanLehmke I think you have a library issue with pdfTeX, quite apart from the core code, as it needs things like libpng
I try to avoid these issues by not having any idea how to compile binaries :-)

@JosephWright I never understood what people meant by the "viral" nature of the GPL, but here it is it seems: once infected, it keeps tools from traveling and suppresses useful development :-(

@StephanLehmke Actually, reading the Texpad website, they may be taking a different path as they seem to have some LaTeX3 stuff, and that does need pdfTeX or another up-to-date engine
Hmm, odd. Reading texpadapp.com/app-help-files/ios/help.html they are using KerTeX, but their file list includes expl3.sty, etc.. But we need \pdfstrcmp, and that's not in e-TeX.

@JosephWright Maybe we should ask the texpad guy when he's here... @vvtexpad

@StephanLehmke You want @vvtexpad :-)
[As he's not visited chat, 'normal' users can't ping him. I can :-)]

7:19 PM
@StephanLehmke Wow, how did he get that rep :O

7:53 PM
Is there a way to automatically trim the white space from an eps figure upon import? I know I can do \includegraphics[bb=a,b,c,d]{...}, but this requires me to know the dimensions of the bounding box...

@Hypnotoad No: as far as LaTeX is concerned the graphic is a 'black box'
@Hypnotoad The bounding box doesn't have to match up with the content :-)
@Hypnotoad Not seen you here before

@JosephWright Oh... so I'd have to figure out the bounding box using some other software, I suppose?

@Hypnotoad Yes: I use GView, but there are others

@JosephWright I've dropped in here for little nuggets of help in the past for questions not meaty enough for the main site (once from you too), but I'm mostly active on Mathematica :)

@Hypnotoad Ah right: the not-so-regulars are not so easy to keep track of

8:02 PM
@JosephWright Ok, thanks :)

@Hypnotoad the simplest way I know: epstopdf, pdfcrop, pdflatex ;)

8:20 PM
@tohecz Yeah, I'm using pdfcrop now. I had to import several of them with crazy bounding boxes and was hoping I could do it from within with a simple setting, but this isn't bad either :)

@Hypnotoad however, since pdfcrop uses GhostScript internally, maybe @HeikoOberdiek could make epscrop too...

@tohecz what happened to epstool that used to add tight bounding boxes to eps files back when I was doing that, don't seem to have it here now (also a wrapper around gs of course)

@DavidCarlisle neither it is here

@tohecz No: probably not part of TL

@JosephWright obviously

@DavidCarlisle Ah, non-free

@JosephWright well I never paid for it, used to be free:-)

@DavidCarlisle sigh
License Do Not Sell Except by Arrangement

@DavidCarlisle Legal-wise, but even that is probably no longer true (as they've moved to GPL for GhostScript)

@tohecz humbug licences are a pain:-)

8:27 PM
@DavidCarlisle Yup

"humbug"?

@tohecz sorry:-) "bah humbug" general grumble and sign of discontent

@DavidCarlisle oh ok

@tohecz even got its own page:
Humbug is a person or thing that tricks or deceives or talks or behaves in a way that is deceptive, dishonest, false, or insincere, often a hoax or in jest. The term was first described in 1751 as student slang. It is now also often used as an exclamation to mean 'nonsense' or 'gibberish'. When referring to a person, a humbug means a fraud or impostor, implying an element of unjustified publicity and spectacle. In Britain, the term is also used for certain types of candy. In modern usage, the word is most associated with Ebenezer Scrooge, a character created by Charles Dickens...

@DavidCarlisle yeah, I was just readin that

9:15 PM
another thesis template that falls into the category "I don't like it":

@tohecz Looks like Word to me.

@percusse that's due to Times I suspect
open page 67 (69)

@tohecz What am I looking at?

@percusse the section title?

@tohecz ah the previous page... ;)

9:21 PM
or the table 2 pages later :p
actually, this question asks about this class:
1
Q: How to delete \shortitle from page when having footnote?

Filip ChwastowskiI have a document, where one page has two footnotes, but they are appearing just above \shortitle ... Can I force \shortitle to not appear on this particular page? Some pages have author and shortitle, some have only page numbers... edit: here goes beginnning of the document \documentclass[pdfl...

@tohecz the correct answer might cost her/him a reprint

@percusse "correct answer" = "use another class" ?

@tohecz using that class but modifying it.

@percusse my first idea was \shorttitle{} (globally) but that doesn't seem to be a good idea

@tohecz I would avoid footnotes anyway.

9:27 PM
btw, the collage is "Krakow School of Mines, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automation, Informatics and Electronice, Dept. of Informatics"
(wow, I can read Polish!!!)

Read this then

user4299I just have copied of Lyx files to one computer to another and i am facing above subjected problem. Complete log is given below. oops sorry @DavidCarlisle for the interruption

@percusse I tried to edit that with {} but indenting it exceeded the posting limit so I gave up:-)

@DavidCarlisle it seems somehow that you provided the set complement of the code.
oh in fact it caught the backticks in the log.

@percusse yes I was going to delete chunks so I could indent, then the backticks wouldn't matter but in a weird kind of way it's better as it is

@DavidCarlisle it provides no information formatted or unformatted, so who cares?

10:05 PM
@JosephWright Can you un-CW this question? tex.stackexchange.com/questions/89771/…
Too many edits.

@percusse Done

@JosephWright Thanks.

Doing search for duplicates about this question, I found this other one which I voted for closing; retrospectively, this seems not so good an idea: the "duplicate" doesn't address the problem at hand, but is only generic about \makeatletter and \makeatother
Probably this one is better as duplicate: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/22576/…

10:20 PM
@egreg I would reopen the \@title one. I think that it is a good reference for questions of this kind.

user19161
@tohecz Hey Tom! I changed my username again!

(of course, providing a proper nicely-written answer saying "Enclose in \makeatletter...\makeatother and see here why."
@JasonBourne Are you sure?

user19161
@tohecz Yes.

@JasonBourne ok, fine. As long as I don't leave the chat, you're Jasper Loy. Conclusion: Better never leave the chat.

@tohecz The \@startsection problem is also well exposed in the UK-TUG FAQ, I believe.

10:32 PM
@egreg and in ctan.org/pkg/titlesec ;) But still I think that "not every question about @ is a dupe of The One.

@tohecz I agree. However, closed questions appear during searches, so looking for \@startsection will show this one and the links in comments.

@egreg I voted for the other one, I believe it's not wrong if both of them appear in the dupe note

10:47 PM
@JosephWright Ping!

11:43 PM
@egreg Pong! :)

@PauloCereda Tomorrow we have Juve-Milan for Coppa Italia. 20:45 CST, 17:45 for you.

user19161
@PauloCereda Pong pong is a poisonous fruit.

@egreg ooh thanks! I added it to my calendar. :) Juve 3:0 Milan.
@JasonBourne It is?

user19161
@PauloCereda Yes, and ping pong is table tennis.

@JasonBourne :)
