@Seamus Hmm ... I'm also notoriously fixing a bit of grammar in Martin's answers (although I'm not that qualified as a non-native speaker). Do you think these edits are somewhat aggressive? (Let me point out what I think when editing Martin's answers: They are great answers already, so it's worth improving them a bit.)
Maybe it's also a cultural thing: In Britain and in the US I feel that such edits could be seen as criticism, and I could offend people with it. I think in Germany things are perceived differently.

@HendrikVogt I personally don't mind when people correcting my grammar or spelling.

@MartinScharrer Thanks for the confirmation. I thought so; after all you're German ...

@HendrikVogt I'm fine with editing for grammar and the like. What I objected to about the edits to Martin's meta.SO post were that they weren't just fixing grammar. They were editing things that already made perfect sense. I object to that sort of overruling of the original author's stylistic choices.

Woo. I've hit 10k across all stackexchange sites.

@Seamus Thanks, now I see what you mean. Actually, I'm sometimes tempted to make the style a bit smoother, but usually I do refrain from changing the author's style.

@HendrikVogt There is a continuum from legitimate edits for clarity to substantive stylistic changes. Where to draw the line is tricky. Maybe what we need is a "Submit this edit to the author for approval" system where we can opt to have the original author approve our changes. That would make me more comfortable about heavier editing...

@Seamus When I'm not sure, I leave a comment and tell the original author to make a rollback in case my edit was inadequate.

@HendrikVogt Here is one for you to comment and edit tex.stackexchange.com/questions/14806/elisions-in-mathematics, really I mean it. edits should be welcome by anyone. With very few exceptions it improves the Site and the quality of posts. Would really love to hear your comments on this question.

Since no one has even nibbled at this multicolumn long table or enumeration I've added a bounty.

@AlanMunn ... one solution is to use chunks of rows, test the size of the box and iterate, longtable can be an inspiration for you to try:)
